Jay-Z debuted this at the Summer Jam festival in front of a live audience. When it comes to disses and replies, the person who goes second always has the advantage. They can flip lines back, and know how hard they have to go with the bars.

He debuted part of it and plus Nas wasn't in the building to witness it. He just heard rumors of it. This was before social media. The camera footage of it only surfaced recently.
Nas was not allowed to perform the next year at summerjam, that radio station was Team JZ, the other one in NYC was Team NaS! NaS won the battle of course...real lyricist always prevail!♠️♟️🎙
I love Nas and Jay Z, I'm from NY and in NY Jay lost hands down at this time. Nas is a lyricist Jay improved over time . I was a witness. The battle was played on hot 97 kiss 💋 fm. That's what Nas referenced in ether.
Just some back story to get a better understanding of the whole situation: Carmen actually has a Vlad interview where she addresses this record and what happened between her and Jay... If i remember correctly, reason she got w Jay in the first place was as a get back on Nas cos he wasn't paying her no mind at the time. Imagine ur bm getting with ur biggest enemy just to spite you. Btch is a certified psycho... 😂 Anyway, Jays own mother had to step in after Supa Ugly came out and made him publicly apologise. I think the back and forth on records ended after that apology. General consensus is that Ether is still considered the better record out of the lot regardless, so Nas ultimately won in most ppls eyes. That Ether joint literally jump started Nas' career back up, cos he'd been slowly falling off before that and Jay Z's Take Over was supposed to be the "nail in his coffin" which would officially crown him as the king of NY. It was all or nothing for Nas at this point and if he hadn't come correct with his response, then i honestly can't tell you where Nas' career would be right now. Ether not only single handedly saved his career, but it kept the "King of NY" conversation open. Legendary sht...
The Vlad interview doesn't compare to her book writing about all the celebrities she slept with. She would be nothing to be offended over. It was more embarrassing that his teenage daughter posted a pic of herself in her bedroom with a bowl full of condoms and he had to write a song AND do a video to explain that humilition...but she get it from her mama🤷🏾♀️
Nas wasn't originally gonna drop a response because his mother was dying but after constant presses from everyone in queenbridge about when he was gonna respond so he made the diss and released it on jiggas birthday
Carmen is Nas's baby momma and Jay smashed. Nas responded with a freestyle- H to the OMO. Just for posterity... "H to the OMO" also known as the "Stillmatic Freestyle" came out before "Takeover". "Ether" was the response to that. Jay-Z tried to respond with "Super Ugly", but his mom made him concede the beef. I think the consensus of the time is still the same: Nas won. And a deep cut for the fans: look up the video of the Jay-Z mannequin that Nas planned to lynch at Summer Jam. It's insane.

As someone else stated, context matters. Takeover came out first. Ether was the response that came out a few months later. Jay Z then dropped Super Ugly and Blueprint 2 (the song, not to be confused with the album that shares the same title....you should react to that one as well). "The Takeover"was a shot at Prodigy (RIP) and Nas. This battle stopped hip hop for a day. This was the only topic. Hot 97 brought in Fat Joe, Kay Slay and had a poll via text online and call-ins. The responses were countless. Nas won. Super ugly didn't touch Ether either. That was a great day for hip hop.
@@theorignalmartian1261 yes. The takeover was a small shot at Nas. Nas was taking a break from rapping so when the takeover dropped everyone thought Nas was buried. I was there in New York ,in real time when this happened. People in the NY streets, radio stations, parks , everywhere. They were saying Nas won. I agree. But Jay could have won if he had made a better move. He tried to trick Nas .by attacking and dissing him in the summer jam festival, smart move. Cause if Nas go and make a song and diss Jay ( who at the time was the King of NY) if Nas made a diss song to Jay .people would have thought...why is Nas dissing Jay z ? Is he jealous that Jay is on top right now ? But Nas played chess instead of checkers . He dissed Jay on a freestyle. Not on a song . Jay was like ....I got him ! Now let me respond. And he dropped THE TAKE OVER .Nas was like..( you idiot. You're now look like you're dissing me first) so Nas came with ETHER .and people saw Nas like...Jay started it .Nas just defending himself. So Jay looked pathetic. His trap didn't work. Now people looked at Nas like .he was in the defensive end and his track was harder anyway, but here's the problem for Jay. He came back to ether with a freestyle " super ugly " so people was like.....this is what you made to eespond to ether ? A corny freestyle ? And that's why he lost. He went to the booth and came up with a better diss track though '"THE BLUEPRINT 2 SONG " in the album the blueprint 2 . But it was already too late. Nas had been declared the winner by then .

You all need context. The first song Takeover was about a couple of people and he performed it at Summer Jam. The first verse and the third verse are about Mobb Deep and during Summer jam Jay pulled up an old picture of Prodigy as a practicing ballet (like he mentioned in the song and twinkle toes, I got money stacks bigger than you was about Prodigy). The beef no one talks about here is how Jay killed Mobb Deep. Anyone saying Jay won this battle is seriously attempting to rewrite history. When Ether hit that shit was monumental. Takeover was the first track, Ether responsed to that and then Jay responded with Super Ugly..but it was too late for that shit by then. Quite a lot of Takeover is actually aimed at Prodigy from Mobb Deep - it was only the middle verse that was aimed at Nas. All the stuff about Twinkletoes and ballerina was aimed at Prodigy.
That is the point.. Jay had one verse against an entire focused diss. And Jays response, which even the odds, may have put him over the top.... A lot of hip-hop heads, who could look past the beat of Ether, said Jay won.

Nas is conceptually a far more creative Rapper when it comes to him and Jay. Nas is also by far the most detailed storyteller 😊. Just like U listened to Ether... one of the best distracks of all times. Nas has some of the deepest poetry ever in rap. Jay can't compare.
Nas is a more complex rhyme schemer, no doubt... but I wouldn't say he is more creative than Jay... Jay has quite the catalogue. And in regards to Ether... it is a good song and a good diss... but a lot of his punch lines were corny, while Jay... especially in Super Ugly... went for the kill shot.
I'd like to see the young bulls reaction to Mobb Deep "shook one's or keep it thorough or get away"....Respect to all of you guys...keep the torch burning

Part of what made Ether "feel" so powerful... Nas had been on a lull and kinda felt like he had been gone for a minute. Definitely a min since he was "hot." So it felt like Jay slapped him on Takeover out of nowhere. Damn, he said NaS... oh yea... NaS... what happened to NaS? Like he kicked that boy while he was down. Takeover felt like he was trying to officially bury NaS. So we weren't expecting much... then NaS let all that flammable chemical out everywhere 🤣🤣🤣🤣 to me that backdrop makes the story. The first beat in Super Ugly is from a Nas song called "Got Myself a Gun", the 2nd Beat is from a song called "Bad Intentions" by Dr Dre Featuring Knoc'Turnal, it's Knoc'Turnals vocals Jay-Z kept on his version
Context is very important, Nas won, everyone including Jay knows that. Check your Ether reaction, I wrote the whole Nas - Jay beef story in chronological order

The history is needed for this. Kay Slay dropped Ether dropped and was like a nuclear 💣... then Jay ran in the studio with Punk flex and dropped this...and the hiphop community could care less... Ether still reigned Supreme. Hot 97 at the time ran a poll and had fans call in to vote and Jay lost miserably. He even admitted it on his following album and said this battle made him step his game up. They both don't perform these songs today. Both amazing lyricists and definitely two of the GOATS living.

Most of the other good lines was about Prodigy (like Twinkletoes, stolen je-wels, ballerina)
It’s cool watching young bros react to our music like we reacted back when I first popped. Funny thing is y’all have the lyrics and history to look at. All we had was the cd to listen to and lil clips in magazines to piece all the disses together.
FR I’m cryin.
They don’t understand the disses are not subliminal’s
It’s our music but it’s funny to see their reaction. Def not like beefs today.
Jay-Z debuted this at the Summer Jam festival in front of a live audience. When it comes to disses and replies, the person who goes second always has the advantage. They can flip lines back, and know how hard they have to go with the bars.
That didn't work for Meek when he replied to the Drake diss. Just saying. Ice Cude No Vaseline too.
@@moremoney2422 Probably because he never responded to charged up except just dismissing on his socials as "baby lotion soft" so then when Drake striked twice with back to back, it was a wrap! Drake played chess and tactically was on point with his timing. Meek wasn't!
don't remember him debuting this at Summer Jam. "don't be the next contestant on that summer jam screen" was Jay referring to him dissing Prodigy at Summer jam and posting a pic of Prodigy dancing as a kid
I never understood that line till now. Thanks!
False.
People bandwagonned for Nas because "Jay was too disrespectful.."
Nas lost.
Period.
Just some back story to get a better understanding of the whole situation:
Carmen actually has a Vlad interview where she addresses this record and what happened between her and Jay...
If i remember correctly, reason she got w Jay in the first place was as a get back on Nas cos he wasn't paying her no mind at the time.
Imagine ur bm getting with ur biggest enemy just to spite you.
Btch is a certified psycho... 😂
Anyway, Jays own mother had to step in after Supa Ugly came out and made him publicly apologise.
The back and forth definitely didn’t stop after the apology. Jay-z song blueprint 2 is a Nas diss, and Nas was still dissing Jay-z too
Great response
Nas' career wasn't falling off, he stepped back from music to take care of his mother that was battling cancer

Jay Z then dropped Super Ugly and Blueprint 2 (the song, not to be confused with the album that shares the same title....you should react to that one as well). Blueprint 2 was the aftermath of the battle. The closure diss, basically.
