Mobb Deep (Prodigy) when he was young he was part of a dance recital that his grandma put together… JayZ had got a hold of the original program/flyer for that particular showcase & Prodigy (as a kid) was on the frontcover… During the summer of 2000 or 2001 at the NY Summer Jam concert JayZ revealed that flyer with Prodigy on it, on the big screen for the crowd to see as he performed “Takeover”

When this battle was going on, the tri state area was locked in. Everyone had hot 97 radio tuned in when Nas dropped the response. Nas response had the world on pause, but I was nervous for Nas after the takeover lol. I was always a bigger nas fan but Jay z came hard

Jay Z had an unknown picture of a young Prodigy dressing up as Michael Jackson, and he was wearing a black suit and he was on his toes like Michael Jackson used to do, smiling. And Jay Z stopped his show at Summer Jam and put that picture on the big Summer Jam screen when he said the line, “When I was pushing weight, back in ‘88, you was a ballerina, I got the pictures I seen ya…” Then he paused the show and showed the picture on the screen and people couldn’t believe that was Prodigy…because always appeared super hard. Everybody went crazy and it went super viral. It was all manipulation though, because Prodigy was a true gangsta from the projects. Even Prodigy said it was a smart move to try to do, and it worked
The "top 10 to not mentioned at all" line was true at the time. You gotta realise how special Nas was when he dropped Illmatic. It was like he was the second coming or something. Each subsequent album he dropped was a little more disappointing (even though IWW and to a lesser extent I Am have aged extremely well) to the point where he was just another rapper after "Nastradamus" dropped. That's when Jay went at him. However, he woke the beast inside of Nas and he then released Stillmatic, God's Son and the Lost Tapes and regained his status as one of the top guys. It was a great time to be a hip hop fan!

The first 2 verses where mainly at Mobb Deep. Prodigy felt like Jay was copying theirs & Nas style so he took shots at Jay. And the ballerina bar is about a picture of Prodigy when he was a kid wearing Michael Jackson clothes. Mobb Deep & Nas wasn’t really street dudes like that but they hung around serious gangsters, so Jay isn’t fully correct on that
When this come out everyone thought Jay was the king of NY and that he finished Mobb Deep & Nas. Mobb Deep unfortunately wasn’t as good as they used to be but Nas came back hard

When Jay heard Ether after he dropped this, he cried live on a radio station, and then we went on holiday. Nas won, Jay dropped other songs, but no one really cared once Ether was dropped.

The first song on this battle was: "Eye for an Eye" freestyle on the DJ Clue mixtape about a year before this. Then there was "Stillmatic Freestyle" White Label (search that) where Nas dissed Jay and his whole crew explicitly. Takeover was a response to all of that....
This was all happening at a time where Nas had fallen off, BUT he was slowly coming back with underground heat, like his verse on CNN's song B-EZ and "Let My Niggas Live" on Wu Tang's "The W".... This battle was beyond epic to live through
This diss was more towards Mobb Deep than Nas. The last verse which is the Nas verse, was added later on the song.
As a jay and nas fan this was a great battle. Probably 1 of the best ever. Lyrical content and punchlines was crazy

To answer your question: Jay’s biggest point in his diss to Mobb Deep and Nas is that neither of them were real street dudes that did any of the stuff they rapped about. Nas confirms that he tried to be in the street but couldn’t do it in his song Last Real Ninja Alive. Large Professor also confirmed the story about Jay showing Nas the tech on the dresser. It has been confirmed that Jay was really in the street doing big business by his former partner Dehaven who is still mad at Jay because he said Jay abandoned him in Jail. MC Search did say that he was only collecting money for Nas at the time and that Nas now owns a piece of Jay’s publishing. I personally think this is cap because Search is a known liar. I think Search did own a major portion of Nas’ publishing at the time and then later signed it over. Would Search really want people to know he was robbing a hip hop legend?
