This is one of my favorite scenes ever. I understand it in my bones. There's plenty to criticize about San Francisco, I'm very aware. But I fucking love this place.

I’m 3rd generation San Franciscan. I had to leave because I just couldn’t afford to stay, and I get so fucking frustrated when people talk about how much they hate how Californians are moving to their state and ruining it… but WE have been dealing with the rest of the country moving to OUR home and driving us out for decades.

Life in a big city, even an exciting one, is a grind. You reach a point in your life where, typically because you're no longer as sexy as you were in your youth, it is no longer worth it. The compensating rewards dry up. If you're smart, you move out. It's very hard because it goes against everything you've stood for all your life, but there comes a time when you have to embrace everything you passionately hated as a kid, i.e. the 'burbs.

I moved from Cali to Texas and this scene hit me hard as I watched it after living in Texas for just over a year. I absolutely love California and especially the Bay Area and San Francisco. The statement “you don’t get to hate it unless you love it” is so deep. People living in SF understand going through heartbreak of seeing their city have many problems, they love it like a child, they may hate it’s behavior but they will never stop loving it.

As a Portland native, this same sentiment applies. Probably applies no matter where you live, but this scene just took the words out of my mouth to everyone hating on the city these days.

Unofficially, it's a grown-up Enid from Ghost World!

I missed the glasses, they made her look pretty, especially on a middle-aged Enid Coleshaw. In the end she never got off the bus.

I have lived in SF for 13+years. This is the realist scene for anyone in a major city in any country. You don't get to hate it until you love it first.

I really liked this scene. I live in Dublin and many of the issues that SF had, dublin is kind of going through the same thing. I'm constantly hearing from people who moved here, how shit the city is. They're not wrong in many ways. Dublin does have a lot of problems. but I can't help but feel that people who hate the place without finding out what's great about it too, have missed out on a life experience.

This scene has stuck with me ever since I first watched it in San Francisco at a small theater. I was living there at the time and I saw first hand the fast decline with lockdown amplifying it. But also the bougie people who don’t give a fuck affect it too, it’s really an oxymoron of a city now.
