I'm excited to continue the Rolling Solo Showcase as we playthrough an adventure of Solomon Kane the board game designed by Jake Thornton and published by Mythic Games! In this video we'll begin the playthrough and cover a number of chapters known as a 'Story' chapters in an effort to get you rolling on your first adventure. Stay tuned for the next video as we move into a 'Scene' chapters. Hope you enjoy and as always, keep on rolling solo! ;D *Corrections:* #1. "Remains in Play" cards are all discard at the end of every Chapter (unless otherwise specified). I catch this and make note of it in Part #3 and clean up some cards that have been hanging around. This has also been added to Part #2 pinned comment. #2. The +1 die socket on Providence's board only gives the benefit when the aura of Providence has Solomon Kane inside. So this additional die is only possible to get in a 'Scene'. I don't correct this until Part #4 in the future but it's worth mentioning! Based upon the stories by Robert E. Howard (creator of Conan), Solomon Kane is a narrative adventure board game featuring exceptional 35mm miniatures. It is a highly innovative co-operative game of storytelling, resource management, and tactical miniatures play. Players take the part of the invisible powers of good and light who aid Solomon Kane in his quest to overcome the forces of Darkness. Each player is one of the four Cardinal Virtues: Courage, Prudence, Temperance, and Justice, each with special powers that reflect their unique role. Drawing upon Howard’s famous tales of the Puritan avenger, the core box allows players to tell their own versions of the Rattle of Bones, Skulls in the Stars, and Blue Flame of Vengeance. Expansions recreate Howard’s other Solomon Kane stories, as well as adding original adventures for the hero, created especially for the game. In Solomon Kane, each of Howard’s tales is told as one or more Acts, with each Act comprising a full game session. Shorter stories like Rattle of Bones can be completed in a single session, whilst longer tales will take multiple sessions to play through. An Act is broken down into 8-10 Chapters, and each Chapter has multiple possible outcomes depending upon the actions of the players. Some Chapters offer story choices, whereas others see the action play out on the game board as the players work together to aid Solomon Kane in his quest. Using custom card decks and dice, each Virtue can control Solomon Kane or his allies, moving them around the board, fighting enemies, exploring locations, and interrogating suspects for information. If the odds get too stacked against Solomon Kane, the Virtues can even manifest directly to intervene on the board. Opposing Solomon Kane and the players is the Darkness. This twisted reflection of the Virtues is controlled by an AI deck which determines the actions of enemy miniatures, thwarts the player’s best plans, and competes with them to drive the story in an evil and unholy direction. The world of Solomon Kane is brought to life through the stunning artistic vision of Guillem H. Pongiluppi and game designer Jake Thornton, whose ‘puppet master’ game mechanics break new ground in co-operative gameplay. With multiple versions of every single Chapter, Solomon Kane is able to combine immersive storytelling with abundant replayability for a truly unique gameplay experience. *Who is Solomon Kane?* Solomon Kane is a dour English Puritan and redresser of wrongs. He roams the world, fighting against the ungodly and evil works of men and foul magic alike. He follows no master save his conscience, though that alone drives him to the ends of the Earth to fulfil his quest. All his life he has travelled, aiding the weak and fighting oppression. From the bleak moors of England, through the damp forests of Germany, to the sweltering jungles and savannahs of Africa - even to the shores of the distant New World of America. He neither knows nor questions why is driven to do this. It simply must be done. To Solomon Kane he is the fulfiller of God’s judgment; a vessel of wrath to be emptied onto the souls of the unrighteous. To his enemies he is an implacable fury, armed with flintlock and rapier, and armoured in unshakeable faith. The knowledge of the rightness of his cause makes him unstoppable, and gives him the ability to overcome any fiend or demon." *Media Inquiries:* rollingsologamer@gmail.com *You can connect with the Rolling Solo community in multiple places!* Rolling Solo Patreon: www.patreon.com/rollingsolo Rolling Solo Community Discord: discord.gg/c5HQrcK Rolling Solo Facebook Page: facebook.com/TryRollingSolo/ Rolling Solo Board Game Community | Facebook Group: facebook.com/groups/330345337770347/ Twitter: twitter.com/TryRollingSolo Instagram: instagram.com/ro11ingsolo/ BGG Guild: boardgamegeek.com/guild/2998
Many thanks. I suffer 'brain fog' due to chronic illness, and have had a_lot of trouble learning Solomon Kane. I've been slowly watching your videos, taking notes, and 'rewinding' many times, to stitch together a mini instruction book that is short and sweet.
Hey John! Happy to help. Be sure to take note of a couple mentions in the pinned comment that are important. Beyond that everything in the video will get you rolling quicker! Cheers
Awesome run-through so far. Pumped to see how a scene plays out. Loving the look of this and can't wait for my copy to arrive! I'm also loving his faithful this is to the source material. Having read all the books, this scenario is stripped right from the pages of this story. So glad the designers are staying faithful to the original works, which are amazing.
Damn. I wasn't even aware that games like this existed when the campaign was running. In fact if you said boardgames i would have said" i don't want to play monopoly or mousetrap " Cue pandemic and i discovered these sprawling narrative mini heavy games. I have Oathsworn and Stormsunder on order but i really want this now. I'm hoping to get a copy on the secondary market. Great video that really gave an insight into the solo play mechanics. Thanks.😊
This was awsome! Mythic Games again has developed something completely new and innovative. Thank you so much for the videos! Can't wait to watch the 'scene'
I think this is a home run based on what I’ve played so far. It’s super interesting and unique. I haven’t had the urge to want to play an entire game front to back this much in a while. So that’s saying something!
Awesome! I enjoyed how the options you selected didn't match what I would have done. So far it looks like a story game with lots of juicy choice for how you progress. I was concerned the game would have an obvious selection at all the decision trees. This should mean there's replay value in the stories and it isn't going to be a one and done. Excellent. Can't wait to get my hands on my pledge!
Glad to hear it helps Chris! I’m with you there. I like that it gives you a true feeling of changing narrative as you play through the game. You also haven’t seen ‘Scenes’ yet, that’s coming in the next one soon 😉
Great Video! I think you may have gotten a rule incorrect though. I believe the Aura abilities for your Virtue only work during the Scene Chapters when you have Solomon Kane and likewise, the Virtue on the main board. I could be wrong about this but the way the rules read is that the Virtue needs to uncover her sitting place on your player board to activate the aura abilities.
You're video is incredibly great ! Explanations are awesome, the rythm is good and.. well.. thanks a lot ! I wish the rulebook of this game were so great !
Love the structured playthrough! Just one question. At 25:45 and at 35:30 don't you need to spend a die, in order to flip it to the opposite side? I see the dice getting banked instead of being used to flip a die.
Hey Jelle! After your roll you always have the option of re-rolling a single die or flipping one to the opposite side. No die spend for that. What’s important to note is you may not need to do so and are happy with your roll. It’s optional based on your strategy. So in those cases I was happy with my roll and slotted dice as desired without a flip or reroll. Hope this helps!
Totally agree, I mentioned this to another person here..I think this is a home run based on what I’ve played so far. It’s super interesting and unique. I haven’t had a driving urge to want to play an entire game front to back this much in a long time. So that’s saying something! 😄👍🏼
@@RollingSolo I left my schedule open this weekend just to play this game. Thats rare for content creators. This game is just next level thematic gameplay. I can't believe how well this works solo.
Hey, thanks for your video, helps with a messy rule book! I have a questions regarding your considerations at min 30 or so - if the Darkness card would have forced you to remove a light, could you not also remove one from providence’s board, keeping the path bright?
Thanx for the video. I have a question : at 33'60, you immediatly apply the effects of the Distrust card (D201) but it is not a card with an immediate effect (lightning) but an Opportunity card (sword). So I think it's not mandatory but simply a possibility for the players on their turn. Isn't it ?
Next question: Are you sure that D200 remains in play also in scene 3? If so, what’s the logic in relisting it in Scene 2 and not in Scene 3? It should either be removed or be relisted, just as im Scene 2?
Hey Jimmie! Nope, not in story mode or in scene mode when Providence isn’t on the board within the aura of SK. Be sure to check the pinned comment for all catches. I correct this in Part #4 onwards. Cheers!
We played SK this past weekend, and we died, very slow at first and closer towards the end we started to figure it out. Just a bit to late though. Seems like it should be pretty enjoyable.
Already fiending for part #2 when you get to the real meat of the game! Even this "story" part looks like fun! Like a upgraded "choose your own adventure" book! Thank you!
very happy to read positve initial reviews of the game. i backed out and got a refund about a year ago due to the delays/changes in developers etc but mostly as I had a bad feeling that the gameplay woukd not be to my liking. oops......looks like I was wrong!
There should be other chances to get in through their shop in the near future. Keep an eye out! Thanks for watching and another part of the playthrough is incoming 😄
Hey Rafael! This one is a 2.66/5 on BGG for complexity. It’s average and after playing it for some time I can tell you it’s not hard to pickup. I was rolling by this point in the playthrough and onwards. 😄👍🏼
@@RollingSolo thanks for that. I was following along with your explanation and thought that is a lot. But like most things it is probably easier to pick up going through it. I love the ip as I collected solomon kane comics from the 70's/80's along with Conan.

Not sure this would interest me. Seems like another version of Elder sign where your just matching die results on a card. Only difference is there’s a story.
They have some really interesting ripple effects which impact the scenes. This game is very unique and is nothing like Elder Sign. You shall see more very soon! 😉
This is why I do playthroughs and not reviews or first impressions. You need to see the game in action fully to understand if it’s a fit for you. It’s easy to compare and jump to conclusions. We all do it. 🙂
I’m just saying this part seems like elder signs in how you are rolling dice and matching them to cards. I’m sure the rest of the game isn’t like this.
haha I was going to say...actually a ton of people learn games and play them solo. The industry has shifted a lot in the last 4 years around solo play. Just like video games, having full control is great. 😜
