I have an 09 Aura XR with the 3.6L and 6 speed tranny. Just hit 250K today on a 7 hour trip from Buffalo, NY. Car has been very solid last 12 years with only minor issues. Did replace the wheel bearings at 200K (only one was bad but did both since they are cheap and the repair is simple). Had the evap valve go at somewhere around 150K but no problems since. Bet this thing hasn't had $1500 in repairs in 12 years. Would buy another in a heart beat

Good vid! And spot on. I have an '07 Aura XR with the 6-speed transmission.
I encountered the 3,5,R Wave plate issue and GM fixed with no charge it even though it was out of warranty. There is a special coverage offer for GM cars with this issue.
Another thing that happened was the multifunction switch that you point out. Fortunately this was easy enough to fix myself.
A few other things I had with this car that others might also see:
    1) Instrument panel lights failing. This can be removed and sent for repair with an independent electronics repair firm (which I eventually did). Getting a used one from a junkyard won't completely work as the VIN is locked to the instrument panel so your total miles will not update unless it is the original part. So get the original out and send it out for repair. Doable if you are relatively handy and the cost will be around $200 or so.
    2) Rear 3rd brake light fail. One would think this wouldn't happen since they are LEDs. But apparently the board may have cold solder joints and fail. Getting this fixed is difficult as it is hard to remove and finding a new one is also tough. Some people have had luck reflowing the solder. A PITA since you need this for some state safety inspections.
    3) Replacing the front headlights is ridiculously difficult. It is next to impossible to unplug the bulb sockets as they are crammed behind the light module with zero room. You have to take apart a good deal of the front bumper and also the wheel well liners to get at the screws and bolts to loosen the headlight module so you can get at the sockets.
Aside from all that I've had a reliable car that has been a dependable ride for over 14 years.

I had luck with some tricks to replacing the headlight lightbulb. Turning the wheel outward and then going in behind the tire (without needing to take the tire off). Need to prop open the panel pretty far to get hand it. But it works. I did the driver's side. Haven't needed to do passenger side....but if you have someone with small hands I heard it can be done from the top without dismantling anything. Also can go through wheel well. There are videos on YT. One word of caution: I found many places (Walmart, etc) recommending the WRONG headlamp...you need one were the plugs are within a cm of each other...not spread out.

2007 Saturn aura and like additional issues known. No crank when hot is the relay fuse box under the hood gets a common ground break internally. Ignition switches are also common issues. 6 speed trans with manual feature also had recall for mount break inside. Timing chain issues due to oil starvation issues that have a fix. 2007 with 3.6 6 sped 204k miles one owner. Dealt with these and several other issues found to be common but unknown causes in gm’s opinion

i have the '08 XR with the 3.6L V6. i got it three years ago at 80k miles and i've only put 14k on it since i bought it. no major problems and i've driven it from the northeast to the midwest to the south and back to the northeast but the flaws in the LY7 engine and 6T70 transmission of the '07-'09 era make it feel like a ticking time bomb. the XE doesn't use this engine/transmission configuration. if i weren't planning on moving back to the big city i'd look into getting a different car.

They eat headlight bulbs because of poor mounting of lights that aren’t shock mounted. The plastic windshield washer faucet is exposed to engine heat and cracks on many auras. The worst is the engine timing chain stretches and is big bucks to replace. The tank mounted fuel pump failed too. After repairs it’s still going at 250,000 miles with no body rust.

  • @nyc8452

Just had the 3-5-R waveplate failure on a 2009 Aura XR 3.6 with the 6T75 transmission. It failed right on 80,000 miles. I repaired it without taking the transmission out using the Sonnax kit. Not something I'd want to do again - it's very fiddly/tight with the transmission still in place - but it seems to have fixed the issue.
I've had every other issue discussed except for the cooling fan issue as well as a host of other things. The electrics on this car truly have a mind of their own and half the time my OBD2 port won't even read.

Q: Is the PCV valve (the one towards the front of the vehicle) difficult to change? ... 2007 Aura XR (3.6 LY7), 240,000 miles
My local repair shop wants to charge me $ 1,104 (one thousand one hundred four) to change it.
Local parts houses have them upwards of $ 30.00..
If you could do a video on that, it would be great..
I've had the combo switch, transmission, fuel tank valve, Frt Wheel Bearings, and alternator replaced..

1A Auto, thanks for the video folks.
My wife owns an 08 Saturn Aura XR with the 3.6 L V6.
Sweet car, given to her by her mother. So it's got sentimental value, but the thing has been a nightmare since day one.
Brakes & Tires right off the bat, including rotors, which were warped.
Always had a vibration, and in four years now I've never been able to identify it and fix it.
I've replaced both front wheel bearing assemblies (x2), rotors, calipers, pads, sway-bar links, tie-rod ends, CV shafts (x2), struts, lower control arms front, headlights (high vis), tail lights (lens too), tires three times now (still haven't found that vibration, but it's not chewing up tires anymore), practically the entire front end has been replaced new including plugs & coils, purge valve and now, NOW during a routine oil change and rotation I found a broken coil spring on the back left. This explains that "clunk in the trunk" I've been hearing this past year and a half... another "bleep" I've not been able to identify and remedy.
I fix these sort of things in pairs, so I ordered a pair of coil springs and new shocks for the rear and come to find out that other coil spring was broken too. Broken coil springs and I couldn't see them till the separated and came out ?
The car had 75,000 on it when we got it and now has 236,000+
I'm a volunteer driver for a company that serves the communities in the surrounding 10 or 15 counties. I take people to their doctor's appointments and things like that. Usually elderly, but just basically anybody that can't drive for what ever reason and their insurance provides ride service... I drive.
I've been dedicated now for over a year and a half to one individual who has to go to dialysis every three days. That trip alone is over 160 miles per day, three times per week.
Then add in another trip or two to the cities or where ever and I rack up around 25-30,000 miles per year just volunteering.
    Then there's the electrical issues.
Took it through a car wash one day and came out with lights blinking, the stereo "flashing" on and off, the turn signals echoing through the stereo speakers, holy cow it was a nightmare.
It's had a parasitic drain that I've never found, but disconnecting the heated seats and mirrors stopped the battery from being drained every other day.
    Stereo stopped working years ago.
Little things keep happening, like when I exit the vehicle and walk away, it honks at me. Hmmm you say, doesn't every car ?
Not ours. The key FOB thingy died years ago and ever since we have no clicker, no remote start, not door unlocker thingy or trunk opener thingy.
So why's this thing honking at me ?
Sometimes lights will come on in the dash, dummy lights, and then go off later.
    Door locks don't always work.
Sometimes the cruise chooses to take the morning off and not function at all.
I keep fixing it though because my wife loves it.
I've been wondering if an entirely new wiring harness, fuse panels, and ECM would solve the electrical issues ?
That's a lot of work, but if it solves 99% of the issues I'd be happy.
All my clients love the car and always have rave comments about it... and it's really nothing that special, I just take care of it, wash it, and keep up on the maintenance.

I feel your pain, had an 08 with the 2.4 though highschool and a few years of college. Car nickled and dimed me, only thing I didn't have problems with was the engine. Tons of overheating even after replacing radiator and all other related parts, all fuses, electrical issues, tpms issues, windows would leak, always had to manually hold the turn signals, horrible gas mileage, car would struggle to start even after changing alternator, battery, etc, sway bars would snap if you go over a minor bump, etc. Not reliable, sent it to the junk yard for $500 with 120k on it.

I have an 09 XR sitting in my garage with 80k miles on it with no reverse and bad shifting from 3-5. I had the wave plate special warranty work completed and still had no reverse and bad shifting from gears 3 and 5. This car just sits in my garage at this point as I don’t want to pay what the car is worth to have the transmission fixed that basically blew because of GMs manufacturer defect on these transmissions. The repair shop said there was so much metal debris in the transmission due to the cracked wave plate and that most likely caused other problems with the transmission that weren’t covered under the special warranty….run away from these things, far away….stay away from the older Chevy Malibus as well, as some of those also have this same 6 spd transmission along with the wave plate issue.

We only drive our Saturday and maybe three times a week. But our battery keeps draining and the alternator is good and it's a new battery. But the turn signal switch is broke off and I'm just wondering if that has something to do with it.

I'd say its first problem is that it's a Saturn 😆.

Whatever problems these Saturns have....are the same you'll find on Chevy Malibu's..
Saturn was just a side brand of GM.
The 3.5 litre is a decent motor, but I would avoid the the 3.6 and the 4 cylinder versions (timing chain issues)

I'm about to buy one of these . Under a hundred thousand miles with only two owners . 3500 hundred dollars ..... Here's hoping for the best . It's got a new timing chain and transmission . No Dents or scratches . With heated leather interior that's like New
