I picked up a Spektrum S150 battery charger and man was the price right in line with the SCX24. Great little charger. You need to buy a IC3 Battery to JST PH2.0 Device connecter to use the stock battery but that was only a couple extra bucks.
That’s a ok charger but I would never recommend a blinky light charger for a scx24 battery. Most don’t go under .5a stock battery is only rated .35a max and you can’t see what the sells are actually doing while charging and there’s no storage mode option. But as far as the cheap binky light chargers go that’s the best 1 for 500mah and up. Great for traveling.✌️😄
@@TJthercGuy I totally understand what you are saying, a good charger with all the bells and whistles is surely the way to go if you can afford it. However, the Spektrum S150 is the charger Horizon Hobby/Spektrum recommended for an entry level charger upgrade for the SCX24. Mine has been wonderful. The charger has never gotten hot and the battery is not even warm after charging at 0.5A. Just saying it's a good budget friendly charger for those who need an upgrade from the USB charger.
SpektOne for sure it’s not gonna blew up the battery just degrades the sells quicker because it’s basically fast charging it. Now the guys trying to charge at 1a are asking for trouble. ✌️😂
Good info, I never run mine on low or medium I can see how the LVC would not kick in as fast by running in the lower trim settings. also all those cheap USB chargers are garbage that the RC's come with most all the time...better off investing in a hobby grade charger for sure. It's nice so many hop up parts are coming out for this...never did understand why no one made any for the ecx RGT type 1/24 scales as they sold a lot of them trucks.
For sure thanks man! I think it's because the rgt or barrage micros are so low on torque. I don't have a micro barrage anymore or I would put the brass widerners on it and see if it still moves or can crawl. 😅
For sure you can go a little over like .4a and be ok. 😊 But it's only a 1c charge rate so any higher then .35 amps will charge faster but damage the cells.
@@jmarine1933 The newer stock packs says 3c yes. But the original did not and I’ve seen a few posts in the groups of the supposedly 3c packs puff and even catch fire on a 1a charge. It’s just better to be safe then sorry especially if charging in a house. Plus fast charging can lower the over all life span of a lipo battery.✌️🙂
@@TJthercGuy Totally agree that charging “fast” isn’t a good idea. I charge at 1C pretty much all the time, even if the battery is rated at a higher max charge rate. But sometimes you can push the charge rate a small percentage as long as you monitor what’s going on in each cell either with your charger or at a minimum with a battery meter designed for lipos. I’ve charged 1S to 6S lipos (cars, boats, planes) for years and have never had a battery “puff” or catch on fire. I’m very careful and buy quality batteries. I also NEVER charge lipos inside our house even though we’ve never had any issues. Have a great night.
3:37 I have never found that information anywhere else, why would they have put that switch there if it damages the battery like you say? I hate the jumpy and fast action at the high setting. Will get a better ESC as soon as its available. A crawler should be able to crawl.
Yeah it it’s like a 50/50 chance low or medium will overdrain the battery if your not careful and run it tell it dies. I’ve tested it many times. It’s unintended side affect I’m sure. They even removed the feature on the v2 electronics. ✌️🙂
Hey thanks man, I really appreciate the info, just wrote it down on the list.. hopefully my list becomes more organized lol it's a crazy bunch of cheap mods mixed with expensive mods (total) and things to remember! I like your style of info presentation. Also i really hope that you get more money to build more upgrades so that i can see what you do! ;)
That is so much I try to do the best I can with what I have. Same here I got some.great ideas for builds just lacking the founds😅 I don't have any steady income. But hopefully next month can get a better phone with a good camera so I can make better quality videos for everyone. If you wont to check or have any questions your welcome messege me on Instagram to same name as the channel. Oh I have a patreon I setup to! That way anyone that might want to help the channel a bit they can I just don't plug it to much. 😅 😊
Hey TJ I am new to rc vehicles and I want to know what I could use the 3rd channel for, and how did you put the under glow and one more question, I want to put a motor fan in it, is that what the 3rd channel is for? Thank you
V1 electronics ch3 is for a winch/light controller or to control a rear steer servo. Rock lights are just standard 3mm leds like what’s in the bumper stock.
Thanks and cool but just keep in mind .5a will charge quicker but will also damage the lithium cells. Lipo don't always show damage. I always say better safe then sorry. 😊
Been in nitro for a while and have a deadbolt coming in soon so this is my first crawler. In H mode is it difficult to go slow without accidentally launching it off a table? I always used the novice throttle trim on my choppers when starting out.
There’s good slow control with a bit of practice. A motor upgrade makes quite a difference to. Honestly I’d recommend never taking it out of high because they sometimes over drained the lipo in medium or low especially if your using the stock rtr usb charger. Unless your experienced enough to to tell when the lipo is getting low.
No pretty sure the deadbolt and c10 still have the v1 electronics. The v2 uses a different transmitter is smoother has a throttle trim, light control and seems a bit more reliable at least in my experience.
I have no problem with the charger, my beef is with crappy motor that doesn't last 6 charges. I have corded stuff 30 years old and little motor in them is still good.
Stuck in First no I haven’t don’t see the point 4 link only really helps in the rear unless you Cms it. Most are doing it to use different links up front. If I get the materials to make custom links I’ll try it and show you all if there’s and major changes in handling. 🤘
The batteries are 350mah with a 3c charge rate. I tested the current draw for the charger plugged into an 8amp usb power port 5 usb charger and the Lopo charger is only pulling 1.3amps which is below the 3c charge rate. Seems fine.
This is a old video the original scx24 battery looked identical but was only rated 1c. The newer battery says 3c yes but several people have had the battery catch fire on the stock charger or a 1 amp charge rate. It’s not always the battery that’s the issue some stock chargers have melted or caught fire to. It’s always best to use a proper charger and charge at a 1c rate imo better safe then sorry right.
@@TJthercGuy ahh yeah I saw a lot of reviews and videos about charger issues. Mines new as of a few days ago. They must have made some improvements. Agreed on c charge rate. I have a higher end charger for all my batts and always charge at 1c. I’m in no hurry. Also I tested out the running of the battery down while in low / medium power for throttle and after the LVC cut off cell #1 was at 3.3v and cell #2 was at 2.9v. Yikes! At full charge they both got to the same 3.8 / 4v so the balance charge is fairly decent for a cheap charger.
@@sideburn Pretty sure they are the same charger mine all look identical inside and out other then the solder is definitely a bit better in the newer ones. I think it depends on what the chargers are plugged into also. Like all 5 of mine from the og charger to the newest one all get hot and heat up the battery if I plug them into anything higher then .5a or on my pc USB’s. Only time I really use my stock chargers anymore if in a bunch on my usb power bank. They are definitely handy for that out in the middle of a trial or something I’ll give it that for sure. 👊😃
I have a question: Is there a safe way to operate the RC in a "low gear" so it's more controllable and calm? Be that with some modification to the electronics or a battery change?
Not really even a 1/10th could run into trouble with the throttle trim way down. Just practice you will get better at throttle control or only use low/medium just for a obstacle here and there long as you don’t leave it the entire run. The ecx barrage motor does make it a lot easier to control at slower speeds and seems to stow more power so seems like the lvc is more reliable with it. 👊😊
I know myself I have been into RCs for a few years now and have had 2 scx24s and have never had any battery issues with either the chargers or running at low/medium range. And I’ve had mine for over a year on the same batteries
Hey TJ, love your channel, considering you run the scx24 a lot on it. I just got into RCs and the scx24 Rubicon is the first one i bought. And of course i bought a second one lol. But anyway, I've watched all your vids on the 24 and i was wondering if you could possibly do a vid on waterproofing these lil dudes. I know it's been mentioned, but i personally like the detailed vids for a specific issue. Bcuz of your close up shots, I've been able to grease the gears, replace ESCs, and a servo as I've gone thru 2 ESCs and 1 servo due to bad parts on the 2nd truck i bought. So i wanna run em thru some tire deep water and film them but I'm concerned with frying something obviously since they're not waterproof like they said. And i do have a question concerning battery run time on these things... I only have the factory charger for them, but from a full charge, how much run time can you get? I know the batt can't be run below a certain point, so I've been pushing it at 30 mins tops and recharging them. The booklet says approximately 2 hrs charging time but mine are full in 20 mins. So I'm curious about an official safe run time i guess lol. Anyway, thanks again, and keep the 24 vids cranking bro! I'm liking this scale!
Awesome glad your enjoying the channel. I plan on doing a waterproofing video just need the stuff to do it broke right now. 😅 For run time without the lights on my good charger is about a hr and 30 to 40 mins with yhe lights. Your getting the right runtime off the stock charger. Your welcome to messege me on Instagram to. I also setup a patreon for anyone that might want to help support the channel to. Every penny helps with future builds and mods. 😅
@@TJthercGuy I actually unplugged the lights on mine to extend battery time lol heard that helps a lil bit. I pulled the bumper off the front and super glued it to the top as a future light bar. But i gotta figure out the correct wire to use to lengthen the LED wires from the ESC to the roof without disconnecting it with each body lift lol. Thanks for your response!
@@modelsncrawlers3209 aww you would need longer servo wires or a servo exstentoin wire. You also can use magnets as body mounts and wire - and + to the magnets so the lights connect when ever you close it. Killing 2 birds with 1 stone. 😉 😁
The real scx10.2 raw builders kit for sure. Unless you can get the clone for $100 or so. When I searched up info on the clone some sites have the it priced pretty high. 😅
@@SDMountainMan awesome I have a link in the clone video description pretty sure idk if it's still good eBay listings changes allot. 😅 For sure grab 1 just be sure to get a smaller pinoin. 13t seems like a good gearing on mine. TJ the rc Guy I found some scx24 by my hometown! Thinking about getting one tomorrow , I baught a fast charger for my la trax Teton you think the deadbolt battery can connect to it ?
@@blazinrc8578 awesome and depends I'm sure they have different plugs and if the charger does not go down to .3a-4a it's not safe on the scx24 battery. 1000mah = 1.0a charge rate. Fast charging lipos in general isn't good for them. 😊
Not with the fake gear on the transmitter. Thats because it can over drain the battery. But you can get more torque and control with a better motor. To go slow it takes practice with throttle control and you can get even more control by upgrading the esc and transmitter to.✌️🙂
@@TJthercGuy thanks! That’s good to know. Would it do anything to the motor? I have the little yellow keep and it just quit moving on the same day I bought it, and I had been using the low speeds. I brought it back and the shop is taking a look at it but maybe that’s part of the issue and the battery is no good or something
@@Grakoham ahh probably the motor then. Grab a ecx or cr18 motor and put some Lucas red and tacky in the worm gears. That should get it going nice and smooth. 👊🙂
You kinda get a feel for it on trigger after a while. If it feeling like your giving it a lot more throttle to clear obstacles then it did at the start of your run or you notice it’s not as punchy or a noticeable drop in the top speed. It’s probably close to tripping the lvc. ✌️🙂
Fir sure I knew how to do that from day 1 actually several people have done it now. I’m not a huge fan of rws but I might do it to my deadbolt in the future. ✌️😊
So I went to the hobby shop near me and the guy got me set up with a charger. The lowest it can go is 1 amp and he said it's a little high for 350mah battery but it should be fine. Should I look for another charger that isnt as powerful??
Yes I'd take it back! 1.0a is a little over 2x the 350mah at a 1c rating! 1000mah = 1.0a charge rate. Better safe then sorry. 😅 You want a charger you can set the amps yourself and can go as low as .1a. 😊 Like the charger I have goes from .1a to 6.0 amp and can charge basically any lipo up to 6s. I'll get a link to the charger I have been recommending you will just need adapter similar the 1 I made.
Here you go this is a great charger at a good price. @@matthewmurray5168 pretty sure that charger comes with a deans plug so you would have to make a female deans to jst adapter or male side of a servo exstentoin wire. Like what I show in the video. I can post on my Instagram for you. 😊 I could do short video of how to charge without a balance board with these king of chargers. Np man my channel is here to help anyway I can. 😊
you dont look at your charging cable you made with the wervo wires and immediately realize the problem with doing that? Look how small the servo wires are compared to the wires you spiiced them to wires come in different size for a good reason
The servo wire can handle 0.3a no problem. Sometimes you have to make do with what you have and it’s been working fine for 3yrs at least. They are just connected to wires that fit the bullet plugs. If I was charging at my charger max 6.0a then yeah them little wires wouldn’t cut it.✌️🙂
Really? I better stop using my fast charger brick then. Thanks. I have a good charger, but the LHS sold me the wrong plug for the battery. Good tips. Thanks! Subscribed. Maybe it should be called "water resistant". I wouldn't even submerge any of my RC vehicles TBH. I'll run them through a puddle and that's about it.
Thanks welcome to the channel! A servo extension wire makes a good adapter for charging that’s what I use. Yeah these a definitely not water proof or even resistant. But I plan on making a video on how to waterproof it just don’t have the supplies. My bigger rc’s go in water a ton can’t avoid it here. 😄✌️
hobby crunchers idk want you mean for sure but It I already have 4 lipos and only 2 scx24s! Throw away mentality is the problem with the world always recycle a lipo and never just toss a rc over 1 break when every single part can easily be fixed or replaced. 😄✌️
Great video! However, I have a question about the low, medium and high settings on the throttle trim. I tried to google this to find more information (not just for the SCX24, but for throttle trim in general), but I couldn’t find anything. Can you help me find out more about this? I’m new to the hobby, well actually I have nothing yet but I plan on getting something soon.
Tim Porter throttle Trim just adjusts how much power you can put to the motor. Witch makes a longer trigger pull. I keep all my rc’s at 100% but with the scx24 the low and medium will not draw enough amps to kick on the lvc. Same with most if you set the trim to low.
Tim Porter steering trim is important it sets how far your servo will turn so you don’t over stress it or break steering parts. Same if you have a rc like my tf2 with a shift servo.
No they are around &$65 and a lipo charger is never something anyone should skimp on. I’d rather spend a few more dollars on a good charger then burn down our house! 👊😂
@@TJthercGuy I have a Momstertronic charger that's basically the same as yours. Is yours also 80W? I think these chargers all use the same internals. I got it many years ago for 30 bucks on my classifieds. It's so versatile. I've revived some overdischarged Li-Ions with the NiMh mode and also charged up lead acid batteries. I've done big 4S10P Li-Ion battery banks with 30Ah capacity and it's done really well.
I6TT_RWD yeah stock charger like all rtr chargers is garbage unfortunately. I’d grab a good hobby grade charger that goes down to .3a ASAP. That issue can also be caused by a over drained battery to if you run in medium or low that could be your issue to. ✌️🙂
Scott Sather oh heck yeah that’s a great idea! I’ve been wanting to get a POV setup to try! You know of any decent it dirt cheap? Tired it’s like 3am here lol Some reason I was thinking cam like cam shaft. 😂🤣😂

✌️😂
Fantastic advice. Glad I watched before picking one up. Subscribed 👍🏻
I charge my batteries at .08 amps, so far I haven't had a problem, maybe I need to stop, thanks for the info 👍
For sure you can go a little over like .4a and be ok. 😊
But it's only a 1c charge rate so any higher then .35 amps will charge faster but damage the cells.
@@TJthercGuy The stock battery has a 3C charge rate, not a 1C charge rate.
Thanks for the good info .
Nice tips, definitely will stop using my iPad brick to charge this thing.
Same here I got some.great ideas for builds just lacking the founds😅

Great video thanks for the info
Thanks and np at all. 😊 I hope it helps a few people out there. 😄
I use the trim setting on my Wraith 1.9 and I haven't had a problem with the low voltage detection not working.
Thank you for the heads up on the charger and specs. Priceless info.
Np at all. 🤘
Great video 👍. I just bought one and I charge the battery at .05a and so far so good.
Thanks and cool but just keep in mind .5a will charge quicker but will also damage the lithium cells. Lipo don't always show damage.
I always say better safe then sorry. 😊
The stock battery has a 3C charge rate, not a 1C charge rate. You’re well within the safety guidelines.
Really though, the charger is not absolutely horrible. It works fine for me. Just haveing fun with it
Yep that’s what everybody says tell it don’t or the battery swells and at worst bursts into flames.
Do all of the models of scx24s have v2 electrons now? And If so what's the difference, thanks
Ever plan to 4-link the front? Not sure if this helps with much but most who do seem to be enjoying the difference.
@@TJthercGuy right I think this high watt anker usb power brick is “smart” and balances the output based on the device that’s plugged into it.

For run time without the lights on my good charger is about a hr and 30 to 40 mins with yhe lights. Your getting the right runtime off the stock charger.

Mace Windu thanks I already did it. it’s farther back in my videos. ✌️😊
So you really can’t use the low speeds? Seems like everyone says they are so nice to use but if it could damage something I wouldn’t want to use them
Not with the fake gear on the transmitter.
How do I know when the battery is gonna go dead?
You kinda get a feel for it on trigger after a while. If it feeling like your giving it a lot more throttle to clear obstacles then it did at the start of your run or you notice it’s not as punchy or a noticeable drop in the top speed. It’s probably close to tripping the lvc. ✌️🙂
I saw a video where someone modded and used the third channel to run rear wheel steering.

I charge my battery at 1 amp on my real charger anyways. It says it 3C charge rate on the battery.
you dont look at your charging cable you made with the wervo wires and immediately realize the problem with doing that? Look how small the servo wires are compared to the wires you spiiced them to wires come in different size for a good reason
The servo wire can handle 0.3a no problem. Sometimes you have to make do with what you have and it’s been working fine for 3yrs at least. They are just connected to wires that fit the bullet plugs. If I was charging at my charger max 6.0a then yeah them little wires wouldn’t cut it.✌️🙂

hobby crunchers idk want you mean for sure but It I already have 4 lipos and only 2 scx24s!
Tim Porter throttle
Trim just adjusts how much power you can put to the motor.
The throttle trim is to give you a wider range of controlling the precision of throttle control
Buying a charger that cost more than the car ?
