in this video I go through some of the general things that I do when I mix a beat inside the SP404-MK2 and add some finishing touches. I hope this helps give you an idea of this side of the process.

Some great advice in this video! My "hack" for starting off with a good mix is to load in a short ~5 second loop of full scale pink noise and loop play this. Then set fixed velocity on pads and one by one play through my samples adjusting the volume until they are just poking through the noise. Then turn off the pink noise and fixed velocity and start making the beat. You will find you will probably have most samples on about 40/50 volume and it gives you loads of headroom to fine tune your mix later. You can obviously can repeat this step later if you want to reassess the mix and you can also play the pink noise whilst your full song is playing to check what the dominant sounds are. However on the 404 I like to do it first before I apply velocity to the samples when sequencing as there is no way to adjust the velocity afterwards unless you go into step sequence but then you have to remove the step and lose timing etc. (fingers crossed Roland will provide an update for velocity quantising or editing timing and velocity of existing steps without removing/readding!) The pink noise is a proven technique in mixing to help achieve a balance point with all sounds equal so you can then choose what you want to be louder/quieter etc. (when I first started using the sp404 I was normalizing samples and putting them on full volume and you find that some effects can distort etc like tape delay). So I tend to use this to achieve a reference level to work to. The final mix should come out about -12 ish.
Great info, thanks!
Great tip on ear fatigue, stepping away to come back later. I get levels while I make the track, but then usually finalize the following day - sometimes DAYS later. It’s crazy how differently you’ll hear it on re-listen. Great vid as always, brother. Also, the copy only certain elements in pattern mode - brilliant, fam! Needed that one!!!
100%! Its crazy how different the same beat can sound sometimes
Dude, thank you for your channel. No matter what my question about this unit, I always end up watching one of only three content creators tutorials: Malo Beats, Nervous Cook, and you.
Glad to help you bro!
Subtractive level mixing is usually the best approach...great advice.
I'm new to the SP404MK2, and your videos have been quite helpful for me...thank you!
It sounds great. It has that wholle...death-spooky rap vibe, with the dissonant chords..great content!
Thanks 🙏
Thanks for sharing! I ordered MKII and your videos will be my study sheet in following weeks for sure.
Nice! Hope they set you off in the right direction!
That tip on selecting certain elements in pattern mode when copying is gold.
It’s so useful when you get to arranging 👍
One of the most gangsta features!
Thank you for this and the previous J6 vid. You've inspired me to get back to trying the pattern sequencer. I'm a resampler and have grown bored with that method. Mixing has also been an issue, especially when resampling. So this vid helped in so many ways. Respect fam!
Nice! I always used to avoid the pattern area but I'm glad I took the time to make it my go-to place!
Dope! I think it's a perfect time for episode about mastering 🙌🙌
Thanks for tuning in 🙌
Yeah man! Good run!
Thanks for dropping in 🙏
Horns just on 1 and 3 would be brilliant variation too:) Great Video! Thank You for all the Videos you make. I appreciate Your contribution to the community:)
🙏🙏🙏
You’re absolutely right, gotta rest those ears. Great video/topic! 👍🏽
100% 🙌🙌🙌
Great video and dope beat man!
Appreciate it bro!
Dope dope!!! Keep it simple!
Yeah I think that’s a big part of SP beat making. Embrace the simplicity and limitations! Thanks for watching 🙌
Dope beat! It definitely bumped harder once you mixed it down. I still need to get my head around how to use the different FX buses, I'm just using one FX at a time atm lol. It's the one part of the MK2 workflow that I just haven't wrapped my head around
Its not too bad, basically 3 & 4 are master FX that you apply to everything at the end. 1 & 2 are assignable to individual pads so you can have those affecting different things, e.g bus 1 for the sample chops and bus 2 for the drums. That's pretty much the flow. Go into EFX set - pad 16. That diagram on the screen shows you exactly whats going on with the signal chain 👍
@@spvidzthanks so much man - I'm definitely gonna play around with it later tonight. The MK2 really is a powerful machine!
nice one
Great video!
Appreciate it 👍
Thanks Master
🙏🙌
CooL, thaNkss...!
🙌
Could you possibly do a video on how to approach the 404 from a beginner's pov? I bought one a couple months back but I'm still scared to actually get into it I've only powered it on lol, but I feel like it's the learning curve that's intimidating me from it
Just get stuck in man, it's easy to get the basics down. Roland's own video manual is extremely good
Can you use the USB out to send each individual pad of the SP to a DAW or a mixer (like a Tascam Model 12/16/24)?
I wish the SP404 mk2 had midi control over track volume and pan. Then could mix with a midi fader controller
That's honestly my most wanted feature. It would be so good for live performances to use a little faderfox mixer with it
Great video thanks for all your tips. i had a hard time until i found your channel.
But is there any way to EQ every pad individually to give every sample their "room" in the mix?
Or even a way to compress individually?
a stem export is a good way to mix all in the daw, but in standalone would be realy great
To add fx like that you need to resample the pad with the desired fx applied and then go along and do each one you want to in the same way. Unfortunately it’s one of the drawbacks of this device and can be very tedious but that’s the only way inside the box
hope for Version 5.05 😜
after the last update i think, everything is possible.
Yeah I'd love to be able to resample to the same pad as well, that would really help speed up the workflow
Hi! Is it possible to adjust the levels while listening to the beat/global pattern? Or does one need to stop the beat every time I wish to change levels and other parameters? Is it possible to assign the pads' level to a MIDI controller? Thanks!
Yes, just come out of pattern mode but leave it playing, then you can adjust the levels of any pad as the pattern is playing
Is it possible to change levels while performing? For example, could I fade in a pad, switch to another pad and fade that one out while the song is playing?
You can use DJ mode - ua-cam.com/video/umZjBgNa2wQ/v-deo.html
Does this device work without wearing a hat indoors? What's the best hat for beatmaking? I want headgear that will autospawn bangers because that's how music works.
No it doesn't work. You have to wear a hat otherwise it wont boot up
@@spvidzI just want to pump out a few bangers infused with urban grit. Should I move away from the countryside?
I need help, I am not sure what I pressed but now when I'm in Pattern Select mode and I hit a pad, the pattern will play but won't stop when I hit it again, it will just restart the pattern. Any way to make it go back to the mode where you hit and it stops??
I've never heard of that before. It sounds like sub-pad is stuck on. maybe just turn the device off and on? I've tried pressing multiple buttons in pattern mode and I can't recreate that behavior
@spvidz you were right, the subpad was stuck, thank you!!
Is the subpad supposed to feel tough to push like pads 1-16 or is it supposed to be pushy like bus, hold, ext pads?
No way! Glad to help you with that. It should feel the same as the 16 main pads 👍
I think this particular beat would sound better a little bit faster.
