Small clarification-additional information for beginners, “12 semitones=1 octave” ( in case you have a device like a keyboard etc, that only has an “oct” shifting option), then if you sometimes have issues recognising the fundamental frequency then play it an octave (sometimes even two octaves) higher. Also when trying to tune a kick to a subbass then you can turn the decay of the kick longer which makes it easier to recognise the key of the kick. When you have tuned it you can shorten the kick decay again in order to let the subbassline breathe a bit.
The thing that's interesting and cool about this beat is that it's using a really dissonant chord quality, but the voice leading makes it seem like a straight forward melody that almost sounds like a major scale melody. By voice leading it just means the melody created by the top notes of chords in a progression. Just to add context. People who are sample based producers do this by instinct, really, which is pretty dope.
@@spvidz Yeah man I dig this approach a lot and dig what you've made! Yeah I'd recommend getting at least 3 chord qualities. Great chord progressions, even really simple ones, use some polarity between chords to create tonal color and contrast. In any given key you have 7 basic chords you can make from the scale. It has 3 major chords, 3 minor chords, and a diminished chord. I think the J6 can create chords from the scale you choose so the chords will fit into that framework. Anyway man don't wanna flood you, I'm a piano/theory teacher and I just love this stuff and love seeing what people come up with from their own explorations haha. It's such a beatiful thing to see unfold.
Nice yeah I'll definitely pick it up again at some point. I'd like to sample multiple chords from it next time rather than rely on the SP for the melody
13:58 Hold up! When you copy patterns, you can choose which pads to copy over with remain (so you don’t have to do what you did by deleting the pad afterwards), right?
Mr. spvidz, thank you for what you do, I learned to use my sampler thanks to you, I wanted to ask you an advice... what would you recommend me if I want to play a VST rhodes piano and give it more flavor and texture with my roland mk2? what kind of effects would you choose and how would be the chain? I'm very excited to know what you think... from now on a hug brother, I send you pure good vibes and energy!
Not what you might want to hear, but honestly, I would suggest trusting your own judgements and taking the time to experiment with the MFX. Everyone making music should develop their own approach and while it is frustrating at first you will begin to notice the sounds/fx you like. Listen carefully to the type of music you want to make and use that as a reference and just keep creating. You will find your path! 🙌
Nice! Thank you for sharing! I also own the J-6 and was waiting for this Vid :) It's a nice way to use Chromatic Scales for the Chord Progression. But I still think the J-6 might work better for other genres like Melodic House (I don't like) or maybe use the same approach via chromatic scales for an Old School (Deep) House Track (I like)..Anyway, just happy to see your Vid and your workflow :) Keep going!
Yeah for sure. These bits of gear I’ve been sent are definitely more uptempo orientated so maybe at some point I’ll try some. It’s not really my jam so I’ve just been trying things that will work for hip-hop and Lofi 🙌
Another great vid dawg! im happy to keep seeing more 404 content. im pretty sure right at the end you couldve used the copy functions sample select mode to copy over the pattern just without the horn. its another thing i find saves time instead of holding down delete
I just got my 404 in the new year. The place in Manchester i bought it from has a big Roland section and while i was in there to get the 404 i had a mess on the J6. It was really fun and very easy to use. Im thinking of getting one to use with the 404 myself but i need to learn to use the 404 before I start buying other gear to use with it 😂
I've been playing with my J-6 again and really starting to enjoy it. It works nicely with the MK2. I've been sampling chords in like this and making beats but I'm starting to find a lot of very nice useable sounds!
The sounds are very powerful and if you scratch below the surface a bit you can tweak and get some really cool chords. I've only sampled chords from it so far but I am doing a bit of a deep dive with it at the moment and I'm going to figure out the sequencer. I'd say its just about worth it
Temporarily pitching the bass note 12 semitones up helps a lot to hear which notes fit into the scale of the sample.
Thanks for the tip 👌
I didn't know that! Thanks for sharing

@@saardean4481thank you. So helpful
hahaha i do this CONSTANTLY
Great vid! Can you show how to midi sync the J6 and SP404? Been struggling with this for 2 weeks
I need to figure it out myself. Don’t currently have the cables but will get round to it at some point yeah 👍
Did you figure this out? Same struggle here. The BOSS BCC-2-3535 is not passing midi clock, no matter what I do with the settings.
@@ThanhNguyenTN I did. Dont recall how though. Will attempt to replicate and will post a vid if succesful.
Man we need you to release those instrument sample packs! Those horns sound so good!
That scale called Phrygian which is 3rd mode of Major Scale. Cool video as always!
Cheers for the info. Definitely not an easy one to say haha 👍

Thanks for the feedback! Definitely want to try more stuff like this where I take a chord from the j-6. Maybe I’ll grab a few next time 👍

J6 and 404 are WAY too much fun together. I threw a bunch of breaks on the Mk2 and have been making some heady stuff

What midi cable you using from j6 to 404?
Nice video and great workflow. The beat turned out super nice.
Thanks man! Not my usual sound but it was fun to create 🙌

Oh damn yeah I totally forgot about that lol! Had my head in too many bits of gear lately
@@spvidz No biggie, I was like whaaa? Did they remove it in some update or what. 😮
Lol. Naa still there. I used it quite a bit in my next vid after you reminding me 👌
@@spvidz yea it’s super practical for building variations of patterns. was stoked when they introduced it in an update.
Did the J6 come with the appropriate cord to connect to your SP? If not, what did you use?
I just ordered my j-6! 💪🏾
Got the J-6, S-1 and the T-8 now. 😏

Everytime I watch your vids, I learn something I hadn't thought to try or get a new idea to try altogether!
Glad to hear that, thanks for the comment 🙌
@@spvidz yeah man, I never thought to use 16 velocity as fade. So rad dude. (I'm still pretty new)

Love it! I have a J6 arriving in a few days and I’m excited to pair it with my MKII. This has given me a lot of great ideas!
Nice! I need to get mine out again and try some more beat making with it

Is it possible to record from J6 directly to sp 404 mk2 using usb c cable?
I think the USB on the J6 is just for charging, I haven't tried that though
I love these workflow tutorials. Do you think it’s worth enough to buy the Roland J-6?

The workflow of the MkII seems like a PO-33 on steroids!
And some! The mk2 is leagues ahead but the PO-33 is still fun to make beats with now and again. I like its limitations
Great idea, I've been planning on a J6 if I ever see one used for cheaper or they go on sale.
I’d like to try syncing them at some point too. Would be cool to have a progression going on the J6 and then use the mk2 for drums etc!
might have to pick up j9
Working with quantise like this is a really useful trick. Thanks.
No problem 👌
Did u try out the 404 og? There is defenetly a sound to it...
I’ve not owned an OG no. I’ve heard good things about the compressor but tbh I definitely don’t need any more SPS lol
Hello huge fan here….How did you connect the J-6 to the Sp404? Like which cables do I need??
I just went out of the headphones out on the j6. You need a cable that is a single 3.5mm jack at one end and two 1/4” jacks at the other
@@spvidz ok bet thanks bro
Honestly I like the longer videos of full beat making on the Sp these are really good in my opinion and informative
siiick stuff. keep em coming
🙌🙌🙌
could i use your drum samples on my mpc live 2
yeah, they are just wav files. I use them on my Live II as well 👍
very dope

Great video. 👌🏽
