This is my favourite western, GBATU included. Leone perfectly captures the sense of time in an age where the next town might be 2 or 3 days ride away. The interplay of the four main protagonists is something to behold. No western fan could fail to be impressed by this movie 😎
I was lucky to see this on the big screen, no other Western tops it for atmosphere, pace and truth with every character dealing with impending death and knowing it will happen at any second.

Agreed It doesn't hurt that he's also tall, at 6'4". Amazing how well he conveys so much menace in this part, all without speaking a single word. btw...the other guy (not Jack Elam aka "Snaky") Al Mulock (aka "Knuckles") committed suicide during the filming of the movie by jumping out of his hotel room window.
Lots of drama and questions in those few minutes. Yes, it's slow, but our minds are not. Leone is giving the viewer time to race ahead to make predictions as to what might happen. Today's movies are about instant gratification, so a movie like this one is not easy to watch for the younger people.
Movies made today would never have an opening like this... Sergio Leone would have never made it and thus neither would his protoge' Director Clint Eastwood . Why by today's standards it's too slow. But for me it's incredible.
One of the greatest movies of all time. Leone has said: "I make silent movies." It's true. He lets Morricone do all the talking. That's the way it SHOULD BE! The marriage of cinematography & music is really all you need. It doesn't hurt to have this all star cast either ;-) This is the reason that Tarantino will never be a happy marriage with Morricone. QT doesn't give EM any time at all. QT is simply too chatty.
Tarantino is wildly overrated. His movies are nothing but bloody, adolescent revenge fantasies with wired- up, overwrought comic-book dialogue---all sizzle and no steak. As you say, MUCH too chatty.
I like some of Tarantino's work. I loved both Kill Bill movies, I thought they were brilliant. But I agree his movies are very dialogue heavy, however sometimes it can be a good thing when appropriate. I don't think he can hold a candle to Sergio Leone.
Al Mulock ("Knuckles") was great in this, especially when he's messing with that bird. Pure psychosis. Such a shame he got high and jumped out of a window and later died.
I don’t think he got high, he was previously a drug addict and was struggling from withdrawal symptoms, the pain became too much and he committed suicide because of it.
@@FizzleDIPS Interesting viewpoint and I suppose very likely. A shame either way. He fit in perfectly with Woody Strode and Jack Elam. Would like to have seen him play a heavy in more films. Would have been great to have seen him as part of Robert Duvall's gang the next year in True Grit.
@@valentinius62 we are talking about a tragic fact happened more then 50 years ago anyway a very very sad event...seems very clear that he had problems huge problems...very sad it ended in this tragic way...
In an interview, Leone told that, in his first idea, the three waiting killers really would have to be Lee Van Cleef, Eli Wallach and Clint Eastwood, creating a continuity with "dollar trilogy". Wallach and Van Cleef were agree and available, but Eastwood refused saying that a "star" cannot die after ten minutes. According to Leone, the "star" didn't understand the mythical dimension that his appearance would have gained in that new trilogy, so Leone decided to engage Strode, Elam and Mulloch.
woody strode also starred in spartacus with kirk douglas, the last voyage with edmond o'brien, robert stack, dorothy malone, george sanders and the man who shot liberty vance with john wayne and jimmy stewart and lee marvin and john carradine. Charlie Muller Jr.
Yeah, see his wiki entry under Al Mulock. Apparently he jumped from his hotel (on set) in full costume. He broke his ribs and punctured a lung. While he was being whisked away by ambulance - Leone said: "Get his costume. We need that costume!" His wife had died previous year just after TGTB&TU.
It woulda been nice to see a close up on his face during the brief stand off after Bronson stops playing the harmonica but I believe poor Al had already attempted suicide and the body double was put in his place which is why you never see his face after the harmonica is heard. My guess is they probably did a cut for the day after the train arrives because you never see Mulock's face clearly again and it looks like an obvious body double too. The body double had NONE of Mulock's signature stance, determination or his draw. Mulock woulda done what he did in The Good The Bad and The Ugly, aggressively throw the duster behind his pistol and holster and dramatically move his hand toward his pistol. Sadly, the body double didn't even try to look like Al. It's a shame.

So, I absolutely love this film, but does no one else feel like this opening scene felt a bit cheesy? The way the bad guys walk in super slow and move super slow and don't say anything and just give the "bad guy" look? Again, LOVE this film, but this opening scene always bugs me a bit with how these guys try way too hard to be bad guys.
From the Wiki: "Strode was the son of a Creek-Blackfoot-black father and a black- Cherokee mother. His first wife was Princess Luukialuana Kalaeloa (a.k.a. Luana Strode), a distant relative of Liliuokalani, the last queen of Hawaii."
Bobbi Johnson thos is a classic, there is anothr classic about two cowboys fighting a bunch of men over land lol thats most westerns but this one had the hero pisses in the bad guys pocket , xan never find this movie
My father Say that this was the best cowboy movie ever made
Your father was a brilliant man
Watch it you'll agree with him.
Such artistry. The way they walk in, the timing, stances, etc. Simply ... otherworldly.
Edit : Just look at :51, for example.
Brilliant !!!!!

It is unbelievable how deep those movies are.
It feels like those accomplished people wanted "to give something back".
i saw this movie the day it came out,i was 11yrs old.evertime it comes on tv i watch it

Sergio Leone is simply great. The way he chooses the actors, music everything. Genius.

A movie into a movie...awesome...incredible...
Agreed. It's almost hypnotic, like a dream.
atmospheric...slow moving....love the creaking noises and jack elam`s eye.....he once refused an operation on it saying that eye made me rich!
Agreed

Eastwood was not Leone's protege, he was just a Leone actor. He was however Don Siegel's protege.

Eastwood was offered Harmonica, you got your sources wrong.

and don't forget that Woodrow Strode also played as Ethiopian king in the 1956 ten commandments and also as royal bearer of princess Bethia
Is it just me...or is the third hit man, the same guy that Tuco Ramirez , shot his arm off....in the introduction of The Good The Bad , And The Ugly?
+shootermav11 You are right. The actor's name is Al Mulock. He played a Hitman in both films.

And poor Al Mulock committed suicide before finishing the opening sequence.
He sure made his last role a memorable one. He was intensely creepy in this scene--perfect for a hired killer.

Nothing wrong with being a little cheesy. It can sometimes be helpful during exposition!

Who is the old Guy
+Julian „MasterDestination“ S Antonio Palombi, a Leone regular.
same old guy in the previous Leone films,,,be it bartender, coffinmaker, telegraph operator,,infirmary caretaker,,,,
the old man dies?

As boring as the rest of the movie. Once Upon a Bloat in the Western.
You cannot enjoy this movie as it is made for grown ups and you cannot progress beyond "Spice World".
oh fuck how I love this movie.
here is a little trivia for you, the Indian woman in the opening scene at the Cattle Corner railroad station was Luana Strode, Woody Strode's wife.
