i came here to decide which guitar may be a better option but after hearing him play them both i think its pretty obvious...
i need to burn all of my musical equipment and never touch a guitar again.
    thanks for the comparison!

Dont give up Ethan.. i m a beginner too with Electric guitar and in the it is sometimes very hard. i don t come forward and it makes me feel bad..
but you need to put a plan.. like 20-30 minutes practice .daily. Myself,. i want to learn songs like Tennesse Walz or Always on my Mind ot Take Yout Ribbon from You Hair. i have many. songs i have in mind to learn play and sing. Even spme Patsy Cline and jimmy Reeves songs..Ultimateguitars.com has most of the songs with lyrichs . chorus and chords.. so it is very helpful for learm play your songs. but it takes time and you need have patience. give up but come back again on your guitar. its a good thing playing any instrument.
you might have another taste in music so you do choose your own songs you like to play and try to learn to play them on guitar. This is part one of the daily practice plan. about 30 minutes learn or play your favorite songs.
ultimateguitars.com. they help a lot. and the UA-cam Reviews of course. like the reviews showing how to play songs.. Hotel California.. Johnny B Good. ect...
ok . last comes the best..fun time ! just playing around like you want or try make a solo on songs. practice time about 30-min up to you...if you feel good to make ANOTHER 20 MiNUTES.. if you feel it is not going well. put the guitar away until tomorrow. that's how i do it.
min 15 min daily a minimum ! . you will make progress and you will find your own way. over time.Always remember ..all the good players had to struggle too. it did not came over night and they might have been as desperate sometimes roo.
what this guy plays here is really higher level but i suppose he got his first guitar when he was 6 years old. i did not.. i begged my mom to buy me a guitar no matter it could be a cheap one when i was about 10 years old.. She did not. thats why i have problems to learn now.and i m stryggeling lot too. the best is to starr as a child. they learn better and easy.. Good Luck.

I impulsively bought the J Mascis because it matched my Player Series fretless jazz, and because it was reportedly an awesome sounding guitar. I have recorded two songs with it now and I love it. I have not found a reason to modify it at all it is beautiful as is and sounds fantastic. Just a little care to avoid hum and buzz or mask it.

    J. Mascis is damn good. It’s not a Custom Shop but it’s actually better than some $1000+ guitars I’ve owned. Didn’t think I would ever own a Squier after owning so many more expensive guitars - I was wrong 🙃

I love that you say nothing about the brand/price but rather the tone of each guitar. I had the money for a Fender but my Indonesian Squier Jaguar was exactly what I wanted as far as tone. "you get what you pay for" is definitely not a blanket statement in the music world, for sure.

Both are great guitars!! There's no way to go wrong here.
But if want go beyond the MIM models, you'll spend A LOT more bucks to get an American made Jazzmaster. Think the cheaper Jazzmaster made in the USA, is the American Special. It does not have the rhythm circuit, it has a Gibson style Stop Tail piece. You can get for 1.000 USD.

      @HawkOfGP 4 роки тому

@Jason Fearn I've heard that is a very typical issue with the standard Jazzmaster bridge. It's very common for owners to modify that bridge to fix the buzz and related issues. Both the J. Mascis and the Fender Classic Player Jazzmaster featured in this video have non-standard bridges that aimed to fix the shortcomings of the original bridge.

      @@HawkOfGP It most certainly is.
I’d primarily been an acoustic player for the last several years; only playing friend’s electrics for fun or helping them record.
I’ve played all the iconic brand names’ signature guitars as well as those brands’ subsidiary lines. Having played a vintage Jazzmaster, I decided buy a Classic Player Jazzmaster as I couldn’t afford the price tag of a vintage model.
However, after months of taking several CP JM’s home, from several different vendors, none of them felt “right”.
They didn’t feel “bad”per se, just not “right”; which, I’ll of course grant the “right” feeling is 100% a subjective thing. I was bringing back one of the CP JM’s I’d borrowed to the vendor, and they just happened to have a Mascis Jazzmaster on the floor.
Within 10-15 minutes of playing I was asking the vendor to ring me up. Been in love with the thing ever since. Maybe I just had bad luck with the CP JM I I tried and really good luck with the SQR Mascis JM I bought, but it’s practically a crime that the SQR Mascis JM cost so relatively little money.
If you decide to get one, and have never played an off-set body guitar before, hit me up with a reply for some accessories you will need to buy, and some helpful “FYI” you’ll need to know, before you purchase.

Every time I think I have gained some ground playing (I really don't practice enough...this I know) . I watch a simple demo video and I hang my head in shame, lol...you sir are an amazing player!! In response to Etron Neutron I hear you man I have been there but I learned that if you just keep plugging away in the end it will pay off...don't get discouraged, he was probably practicing while we were partying with the playboy models!...no wait that never happened...lol. My point is just like the old joke "how do you get to Carnegie Hall?" Practice, Practice, Practice!! Steve Vai didn't get to the level he is without MASSIVE PRACTICE!! I saw an interview a few years ago with someone famous and the interviewer asked the guitarist what the best investment was for a beginning guitarist to get great tone from his guitar. He said "Save your money and practice everyday" Just sayin.

I have the J Mascis model and I have to say for the price you get an amazing instrument. Though there are a few exceptions. You WILL NEED to install a treble bleed mod or do an overhaul on the electronics. You put the volume down past even 8 and you lose ALL of your high end. The rhythm circuit is pretty useless as it's muddy even with the tone roller rolled all the way left. Upgrading the tuner keys is also a must as it really doesn't stay in tune, playing hard or softy. The pickups they throw in the Squier aren't bad but I felt as if they lacked the presence and sparkle the Classic Player had so I threw a set of 65' Jazzmaster pickups in mine. Nt necessary, but it was essentially preference. The feel and playability of it really makes up for the slight problem I listed. You are most likely better off spending the extra few hundred on the Classic Player, but if you already have the J Mascis it only needs about $150 in upgrades to make it an amazing players guitar.

no need for a treble bleed when you're using a Germanium Fuzz Face ;) also, I'll add that there's nothing wrong with the tuning keys, getting a bone nut cut will do wonders for tuning stability.

G'DAMN COOP! That was some mighty chicken picking my friend. I have a Mascis and couldn't be happier! With the $300-400 you save buying the Squire, you could get a fresh set of Seymour Duncan Antiquity of Novak Pickups, change a couple pots and BAM! Golden Jazzmaster on par with the American ones. I also found the JMascis neck to be PERFECT.

This video is the purest exemple of what a good guitarist is. I mean, he doesn’t play the type of music I listen to daily, but his playing is so on point that the two guitars sound really fine. If I was playing, they would have sound bad in comparison. It’s the perfect example that shows that it’s the quality of your playing that drives the quality of the sound, and not mainly the guitar or the amplifier.

  • @jonathanustin6295
    @jonathanustin6295 7 років тому +3

Great playing and great sampling of the tonal possibilities. The only improvement I would request is that either the video be edited or the playing examples be organized so that the guitars are A/B'ed against one another for each tonal possibility. i.e. The rhythm circuit example on one guitar be followed immediately by the rhythm circuit sound on the other, etc. That way each sound can be compared more easily to the corresponding sound on the other guitar. Thanks.

      1) J Mascis thank you for getting with Fender to make a reliable performing jazzmaster.. But... After playing both myself, and you have the money get the fender one.. Do it... The quality is better by far... The JM is for those struggling musicians... Mine is a backup to my 1962 rebuilt jazzmaster...did it myself... It's got phat cats (for my preference..) if you think the JM sounds better... Great.. Try it yourself you'll see, the JM absolutely needed (I did this) replacement 1/4 jacks / quality wiring / pots / caps / the pickups are not as loud or warm until you do this.
Also NO LOCKING TREMELO AND MY DAMN TREM ARM KEEPS POPPING OUT.
      So that's next.
Since it's a backup, I'm fine with the pickups.. A little odd trying to adjust them but 449 WORTH IT.
Live in the Detroit? I can provide you with my artist discount and shoot the (cuss) I'm not promoting sales from this excellent musician or store. Im promoting Fantasee Lighting (stage light repair) and I get the word out this way. Let's just say after tax.... Your just mascis is 334..... What... It's because we're in the biz... Not to SELL ANYONE ANY THING OTHER THAN... trying to build a jazzmaster network.. Had one in Nashville came back to the D (Downriver folks) to rebuild....
If you don't want the deal... Fine.. I get nothing anyways.... Help by buying from these guys....
      Great demo!
      FENDER BLACK WINS!
Oh, try playing the squire vintage mods... Way worse pickups... Must MOD EVERYTHING... To get a pro sound.. Still worth the 399 price tag..
I used my 2001 Supersonic Fender 60W combo with one of those... Had to turn it to 10!? (maybe something was wrong) j-mascis-jazzmast! 1st day.... Back to volume at lecel 3 without an attinuator (look that up for ya loud amps!) with an attinuator I can go to the majic 8 volume and drive my tubes then PROPERLY turn the speaker volume down with (THE ATINUATOR)
Hope this helps.... And once again thank you for you homework..
My question to you, I have phat cats p90s in a Squire body with a 61 neck and any advice to get those (cuss) thngs in my Squire pick guard.... Suggestions will help tremendously!
      Thanks!

I'm not a struggling musician. I have a Squire J Mascis and I absolutely love it. I also had a USA strat and Mexi tele. I sold the USA strat kep the mascis and the tele. I will say that I did upgrade the bridge and Tremolo to USA made fender parts on the Mascis. But other than that the Mascis is all stock and it plays and sounds as good as any Fender. The Mascis is definitely capable of going on stage or in a studio.

  • @raymon8044

Nice playing. The Classic Player sounds a bit mellower to my ears. Probably because of the gold anodyzed pickguard on the Squier that brightens up the sound. My first Jazzmaster was the Fender purple flake JM Jazzmaster they made like 8/9 years ago. I stupidly got rid of it because it sounded too bright.. I should have just put a different pickguard on it.. Anyways I now own a Classic Player and a AV65. The AV sounds more jangly even thin at times. The Classic Player deffinatly leans more towards an allrounder with the hotter warmer sounding pickups.
Nothing wrong with Squier, they make great bang for the buck guitars especially their higher end stuff. They're affordable, sound and play just fine and even come in cool(er) collors to pick from.
