The Last Rose Of Summer

  • André Rieu Live at the Point, Dublin, Ireland.
The Last Rose of Summer is a poem by Irish poet Thomas Moore, who was a friend of Byron and Shelley. Moore wrote it in 1805 while at Jenkinstown Park in County Kilkenny, Ireland. Sir John Stevenson set the poem to its beautiful melody and it was published in a collection of Moore's work called Irish Melodies (1807-34). It was made popular in the twenty first century in a recording by Charlotte Church and the Irish Tenors.
This melody was used extensively throughout Friedrich von Flotow's opera "Martha," first performed in 1847 in Vienna. According to the Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (1954), this opera was a remodelling from a ballet written in conjunction with Burgmuller and Deldevez and produced in Paris in 1844 as "Lady Henriette." It stands to reason, based on the evidence, that Flotow made liberal use of Stevenson's melody.
It is sung in the Musical group Celtic Woman by Méav Ní Mhaolchatha and Hayley Westenra

Clarebannerman, that is a fabulous video, made all the better by your explanation of its origins. I have been told that the flageolet player, Teun Ramaekers, spent a lot of time in Dublin perfecting his, obviously, very natural technique. Thanks again for putting it up. I come back to it again and again.

Incredible performance on the flageolet (tin whistle) which is so popular in Ireland. Playing an enchanting and basic instrument not common for orchestral use, the flautist here is a true professional.
He achieves full value from the tune and the instrument by using a D whistle to play in the key of C major. This allows him produce great magical music at the higher register top notes. His sense of timing is also impeccable. He must have Irish genes somewhere !

'TIS the last rose of summer,
Left blooming alone ; All her lovely companions Are faded and gone ; No flower of her kindred, No rose-bud is nigh, To reflect back her blushes,Or give sigh for sigh.
I'll not leave thee, thou lone one To pine on the stem ; Since the lovely are sleeping,
Go sleep thou with them. Thus kindly I scatter
Thy leaves o'er the bed, Where thy mates of the garden Lie scentless and dead....

I think it's Teun who provides the brilliance in every way - the quality of the playing, his obvious involvement when seen from behind, AND his beautiful modest smile. I suspect the orchestra could have played without the poser Andre, that bloke who was at the front trying to take the credit for the musical quality of Teun & his playing.
BTW, Teun is an anagram of Tune AND Andre is anagram of Drane - pronounced Drain !!!

It is like a duet, and so wonderful to hear -- and to see the smile on Teun's face after this performance. This gentleman truly is an artist with anything even resembling a flute and deserves all the admiration and accolades he receives. I feel sure our great violinist/conductor, Andre Rieu, is grateful for the many years of loyalty Teun has had toward him and is happy to share this marvelously gifted and skilled musician with us. God is everywhere in the universe and everywhere in the hearts of His children that love Him. The seasons, the times, the clockwork of the dawn chorus when the birds begin daily to sing at the same time, the very numbers of the petals contained in the flowers that we love, the rising and the setting of the sun, and the lesser light of the moon, all of this is God's glory. Heaven will be a very different world from this one. This life is but a shadow of the great eternal life to come where we live in joy throughout the grand eternal rolling of the timeless eternity. Meanwhile we have time to ask for God's grace to save our wretched soul for we were all born in iniquity (this is a fallen world) and soon the first resurrection will take place, and there will follow a tribulation on earth for three and a half years, before Christ will return in glory with the raptured saints, and usher in the great millennium, thousand years of peace. And yet that is not heaven on earth yet. For after that Satan will be freed again for a short season, and then (after the second resurrection) will the Great Day of Judgment arrive, and all the record books of heaven will be opened up, and each and every one will be judged according to his works. Seek God while He might yet be found and repent of your sins while there is still time. Don't miss that glorious eternity. Ask God to enter into your heart and fill you with His goodness. For He saved a wretch like me and made me new again. Though my sins were as scarlet, He washed my sins and carried them away at Calvary to be buried in the depths of hell where I would have gone if He had not paid the price for me. ISAIAH 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. 🌷God is in a bouquet of flowers given by a man, to the woman he dearly loves. 🌹 🕊 ♡ ♡ 🎶

I had heard of moments when something magic happens and its as if the the music plays the musician but had never seen or heard it until this when the amazing musician with his penny whistle is 'gone' and the music is playing him - pure magic - goosebumps all over.

The Last Rose of Summer / 여름 날의 마지막 장미
Tis the last rose of summer, left blooming alone
All her lovely companions are faded and gone
No flow'r of her kindred, no rose-bud is nigh
To reflect back her blushes or give sigh for sigh
I'll not leave thee, thou lone one!
    To pine on the stem
Since the lovely are sleeping, Go sleep thou with them
Thus kindly I scatter Thy leaves o'er the bed
Where thy mates of the garden Lie scentless and dead
So soon may I follow when friendship decay
And from life's shining circle the gems drop away
When true hearts lie wither'd and fond ones are flown
Oh, who would inhabit this bleak world alone

"The Last Rose of Summer" is a poem by the Irish poet Thomas Moore. He wrote it in 1805, while staying at Jenkinstown Castle in County Kilkenny, Ireland. The poem is set to a traditional tune called "Aislean an Oigfear", or "The Young Man's Dream", which was transcribed by Edward Bunting in 1792, based on a performance by harper Denis Hempson (Donnchadh Ó hAmhsaigh) at the Belfast Harp Festival. The poem and the tune together were published in December 1813 in volume 5 of Thomas Moore's A Selection of Irish Melodies. The original piano accompaniment was by John Andrew Stevenson. Wikipedia
