I am currently purruing an associates degree in coding/programming and have one more year left (chaning careers from biology). My dream is to work remotely and become a digital nomad. Can DBAs work remotely or is it a job that requires to be present in work all the time? Also, is it a job that requires a lot of overtime work if you are just starting out? How about travel......does it require a lot of travel? Thanks
As a DBA (Database Administrator), the potential for remote work can vary depending on the company and specific job requirements. Many companies do offer remote work options for DBAs, especially as remote work becomes more prevalent in the IT industry. However, it ultimately depends on the organization's policies and their specific needs for on-site presence. Regarding overtime, the workload and the need for overtime can vary. In some cases, especially when starting out, there may be instances where overtime work is required to handle critical issues or meet project deadlines. However, this can differ from company to company and depends on the specific circumstances of the projects you're involved in. In terms of travel, DBAs generally do not require extensive travel. However, there may be occasional instances where travel is needed for specific projects, such as database migrations or working with clients in different locations. The frequency and extent of travel will depend on the nature of your role and the organization you work for. It's worth noting that the IT industry as a whole offers opportunities for remote work and flexibility, and as a digital nomad, you may explore other roles within coding/programming that align with your aspirations of remote work and travel. Freelancing, remote software development, or working for companies with a strong remote work culture might be options worth considering. It's always advisable to research and explore specific companies and their remote work policies to find the right fit for your desired lifestyle as a digital nomad. Additionally, gaining experience, networking, and showcasing your skills through internships, projects, or certifications can greatly enhance your prospects in finding remote work opportunities in the coding/programming field. Best of luck in pursuing your associate's degree and transitioning into the field of coding/programming!

Yes, it is possible to become a database administrator (DBA) with a Management Information Systems (MIS) degree. However, having additional education or certifications can increase your job prospects and earning potential. Here are some steps you can take to become a DBA with an MIS degree: Gain experience with database management systems (DBMS): You can gain practical experience with various database management systems, such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, and MongoDB, by taking online courses or tutorials, practicing with free or low-cost tools, or volunteering to work on database-related projects at school or in internships. Learn programming languages: You may want to learn programming languages such as SQL, Python, and Java, as they are commonly used in database administration. Obtain relevant certifications: You can pursue industry-recognized certifications such as Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE), or IBM Certified Database Administrator to demonstrate your knowledge and skills in database administration. Build a portfolio: You can showcase your projects, certifications, and work experience in a portfolio or personal website to demonstrate your skills and qualifications to potential employers. Overall, while a MIS degree can be a good starting point for a career in database administration, it is essential to stay up-to-date with the latest technologies and certifications to remain competitive in this field.
I have been looking at job postings for Oracle DBA but it looks like they looking for addtional skills like python, aws, pl/sql etc. What are some skills to add if someone just has the core foundation of DBA? thanks brutha!
Hey Dorian, you answered your own question in a sense. The skills that you listed are all the fundamental skills needed for a DBA as they are working with larger and larger sets of data. Python is the perfect code for larger data sets and analysis. Aws and Azure for cloud. You need an understanding of this as these larger datasets are stored in the cloud. Pl/SQL is a must... you can't be DBA without knowing SQL. The soft skills you will need are effective communication, detail oriented, etc...
Interesting question. Consider rethinking why you are asking the question. Maybe your question should read, which is harder because I want to take the easy path etc...

Hello
Is it possible to become a part time DBA?
Like 20-30 hours per week?

Getting a information systems degree instead of mis for a DBA career is similar, right ?
Yes it's basically the same Cletus without the focus on Management.

Yes, it is possible to become a database administrator (DBA) with a Management Information Systems (MIS) degree. However, having additional education or certifications can increase your job prospects and earning potential.
Here are some steps you can take to become a DBA with an MIS degree:

@@ElevateToTheUnknown Thank you...but is it enough to learn one language like sql? ... I see it is common to use this language in this career
yes learn SQL.
How long is it going to take?
May I ask, which Microsoft certification would be better for an entry DBA , AZ-104 or DP-300 ?
The az 104 isn't for a DBA is more for a system admin on azure. If you are wanting to become a DBA then dp -300. This is the associate level.
