Thank you guys for helping me out on this one! I totally forgot that the girls were MUCH more younger when they started out - thus, their vocals were very different back in the days. I totally forgot that and it makes sense why they sounded more mature in this song! My apologies.

In Japan, the culture is for females to talk and sing in a higher register than normal. I’m sure they think a lot of our culture is weird too. Dancing to music is also part of their culture even though most people don’t dance to metal music. In Japan, it’s part of their culture. That’s probably why I like their music so much because I like weird things anyway things out of the ordinary. Here’s a link to Frank Zappa apostrophe. You don’t have to react to it just listen to it. This is my kind of music. Weird. Enjoy. ua-cam.com/video/oF9aJUePkNA/v-deo.html

Thanks for giving them another chance despite being reluctantly to their high pitch vocals, they certainly grew up a lot and SuMetal the lead vocalist learned a lot of vocals techniques, including more low tones on certain songs and some vibratos, you probably heard some of their album tracks when the high pitch is even more noticeable, that's why we always try to recommend live performance when those vocals arrangements or post production are minimal and you can hear their raw vocals and the blaster sound of the Kami Band playing behind.
BM fans love honest critics without being disrespectful, so don't worry, we know BM songs isn't for everybody, but at same it is for everybody, oxymoron i know. And btw i know Utada Hikaru too and some others jpop singers and artists i used to love back then, but BM isn't necessarily always related to anime stuff and they certainly got their own unique trademark unlike any other previous japanese group.
Divine Attack - Shingeki marks their return after a year of hiatus with a new single and new upcoming album, as well they return to live performance showing another BM side we've never seen before, one of the greatest news on here was SuMetal being credited on the lyrics for the first time.
We're waiting for 4 more singles before album release next year, and just like Herman Li said, they probably got better songs to be release, so far this one is a banger and got everyone hooked from the get go, so hopefully we'll see you around later this month for more BM.
My recommendation is to go for some more Metal Galaxy songs, latest album, probably those will be more keen on you, since they got more mature sound. Songs like Kagerou with Kami Band intro live at Legend Metal Galaxy 2020, or the Trilogy Of Lights with Starlight, Shine and Arkadia will hit you in a different way, hopefully.
Thanks again for sharing this and see you next time 🦊🤘

The lack of vibrato is one of the things that makes Su's voice so good. Vibrato does not spice up the sound, its an annoying sound like nails on a chalk board. I hear enough vibrato from church ladies on Sunday mornings. That's just my opinion on it.
I have no interest in anime either and it always annoys me when people make that comparison with Babymetal. It's one of those things where people see anything Japanese and immediately think anime without thinking. As if that's all Japan is, one big anime show.
Obviously since the girls were very young at their beginning, they will sound like kids. They were kids. Now they're pushing the mid 20s so will sound more mature.
Babymetal is very different from everything else out there so certainly not everyone is gonna be on board with it. In your case, I think you put up a wall against it because Japan reminds you of anime so you were going to dislike it no matter what. It's something we all do with other bands and genres. I know I'm guilty of it.

Let's try this for starters and see how you react and take it from there:
BABYMETAL | Kagerou (with Kami Band Intro) | LIVE Compilation (HQ)
    ua-cam.com/video/Hg3QsPI3x1M/v-deo.html
As noted, it's a compilation with video edited together from several live performances to one live show audio, but it's very well done.
Fun fact, the temporary name of this song was Tattoo, so I think it's fate! Hopefully you won't be in pain again when you listen to it. 😆

i will have to say this is a more mature Babymetal. what you had heard was probably when they were young. remember Babymetal started when they were 12 and 11 years old. yes most of the beginning stuff is kawaii but after that they have started to get away from it some. they still have their own style. glad at least you came back to listen to the new stuff. they will be releasing 4 more songs each month til March next year when the new album comes out. your opinion is ok. to me i want a reactor to be honest. Babymetal is not for everybody. what band is.

Welcome back to the Foxhole! 🤘🦊🤘
As has been mentioned below, you probably wont like most of what is on the first 2 albums as the girls were younger and had the higher pitched voices, although the 4 Su-metal solo songs ("Rondo of Nightmare", "Akatsuki", "No Rain, No Rainbow" and "Amore") might be palatable as Su does tend to use a little lower range on those. Many of the songs on the third album "Metal Galaxy" do have a more mature sound, so you might enjoy those. Yui Mizuno had left the group for health reasons before Metal Galaxy was recorded, so you only have Moa's backup vocals and harmonies, which have improved and matured as well.
At the end if this video you see "THE OTHER ONE" which will be the title of the upcoming concept album where each song represents a different universe's version of Babymetal (yes, their producer Koba is banking on the popularity of multiverses in recent pop culture and cinema, hopefully it works).
I will second the recommendations of the Trilogy of Lights, "Starlight", "Shine" and "Arkadia" as well as "Distortion" (If nothing else, you should like Alissa White-Gluz's vocals on the backing track) 🔥🔥🔥

  • @steffenjachnow8176

Well... The high-pitched vocals weren't high-pitched because of a pursued anime stereotype but because they were very young. They started twelve (12!) years ago when they were 11 respectively 12 years old! Surprisingly, now that they are older, they have much more mature voices... ;-)
However: This is the first forerunner of their new (their fourth) studio album "The Other ONE" (a concept album) which they will release in March next year.

  • @stevechevy3382
    @stevechevy3382 Рік тому +7

Well, that was honest. I always find it odd when someone say it sounds like anime to me. Mostly because anime has been using metal in their soundtracks for a long time. So, it should be anime soundtracks sound like metal. Yeah, Su doesn't sound like someone imitating a low roaring lion. I find that good and the metal genre needed it badly. As far as vibrato goes that will come naturally as she gets older. Making it even better than those who learned to do it at a young age and then end up sounding like billy goats. I love that fact that she can go right to a note and hold it. She'll learn the rest as she goes a long. Su seems to be a very good music student. And has been studying singing from a very early age. And as far as I know has never stopped. I would love to see her get a master class from Floor Jenson. But hey that's a whole lot of folks. Babymetal every song is different and yet retains an overall Babymetal sound to it. A big part of that is Su's vocal power. Which she has been ranked in the top 10 as one of the best singers in metal. I hear your opinion, but it might be high time to reassess what you consider a good vocalist. As for me I studied music and have a degree in music. I've delt with lots of singers and their egos over the years. For me she's a way better than just good singer. She's humble and knowns her limits. She held a song off their first album because she felt she wasn't ready to record it. When she sang the song live and saw folks crying in the audience, she knew she had done the song right and was ready to record it. Imagine a teenager telling a record company no like that. But Su did. That alone makes her better than many others. Finally. Su is going to be 25 on dec 20th. Her voice has matured so that young high voice is over with. She's a soprano so her voice will at least for now be in the high register. But she can hit the low notes and has songs where she does. still not growly growls. But actual low notes. Now to the song. As the first song off the new album due out in March. It does its job. Adds some new elements Like Su's mature vocals and she got shared writing credits for this song. Which is also new. she said she wanted to be a singer song writer and now she is. The song got the fan base pumped up. And I've seen tons of new reactors cover the song. Most like it. Babymetal has won over new fans with the release of one song. Job done. But they hide one of the things they're known for and that's the choreography they do with their songs. Are they going to do something else for these songs? We shall find out when they perform live for the first time since lockdowns in January. Babymetal everything you ever wanted in music and somethings you didn't know you needed.

    Really appreciate your honest reaction.
Don't be scared giving your honest opinion, we all have preferences in music and about everything. We just don't tolerate when people insult or disrespect them in any way. So, being respectful is the key.
The "anime" thing is just a very recurrent stereotype and I believe we will never get over it. They started very young, being 11 and 12 and they had naturally high pitch voices. They are all grown up now (Moa is 23 and Suzuka 24 about to turn 25 in December). So their voices have matured and they improved their singing abilities and technique.

Being a Metal fan since the begaining got fed up with what i regarded as Metal mainstream harsh vocals and nearly everyone growled. BabyMetal came along and i was hooked good clean vocals and excellent musicianship .
They become the rebels forging there own path against what people said what metal should be . Think you probably find some BabyMetal songs you will like, once the chorus and melodies get stuck in your head .
Nice reaction respectful and honest 😁🤘🦊🤘

Good reaction. Most of the songs that you have probably heard from Babymetal are very likely to belong to his earliest stage and you have to take into account that Su was around 15 or 17 years old, so his voice was still in a mature phase. Today, at 24, her voice is very different and just as wonderful.

  • @Grington300
    @Grington300 Рік тому +26

Good honest reaction, that's all we ever really want. I've never watched anime so I have no idea what the music might sound like other than it is Japanese - none of BABYMETAL's own songs have ever been used in anime to the best of my knowledge.
I do suspect you only heard studio recordings / album versions of their more well known songs like 'Gimme Chocolate' or 'Karate' to think that everything they might do is so high pitched since those do start off with the younger girls, Yuimetal and Moametal, chanting ... and they were very young when those were recorded, so their voices were those of very young (and very small) Japanese girls.
On top of that their vocals are always over-processed and compressed in the studio recordings which made them sound even more squeaky than they really were.
Su-metal, the lead vocalist, on the other hand - personally I can't get enough of her voice (again always best heard live for the same reasons). You said you prefer more vibrato ... for me it is the fact that she sings strong, straight notes that sets her apart (and for me above) so many other vocalists who just overdo the vibrato - so much so that I often wonder if they are doing it because they can't hold a note. Too much vibrato and it feels like they are just losing the melody.
Of course we all have our own preferences and different things please our ears.
I'd had more than enough of growling and screamo vocals, every other singer and every other band sounded alike and they seemed to be releasing whole albums of songs that all sounded the same, so I had reverted to just listening to my old favourites from when I was younger and easier to please.
When I discovered BABYMETAL they were like a breath of fresh air. Good clean vocals, great instrumentals, no two songs alike - and they were completely unlike anything else I'd ever heard, nothing stereotypical whatsoever, just new, original and unique.
There is a very good chance you will never see or hear what I do in BABYMETAL and that is absolutely fine. You gave them a chance, you like what you like and you know what you don't like. There are a load of very talented and very good bands that do nothing for me - I can see and respect why they are popular and why people love them, they're just not my thing and the same may well always be so for you with BABYMETAL.
If you are tempted to see if there is anything else they do that you may like better Jake Muller has provided some good suggestions ... those songs may appeal, they may grow on you after all - and if not, again no problem and we will only applaud you for trying.🦊🤘

Hi Micha, thanks for challenging yourself to get out of your comfort zone and giving BABYMETAL another try! Appreciate your balanced reaction and honest review, walking us through your thought process of what you liked and didn't like so we know where you're coming from. Hopefully this will help us guide you to songs of theirs you will enjoy. And it's cool to hear that you were into other Japanese artists like Hikaru Utada and especially surprised about Tatsuro Yamashita! Will be interesting to hear what songs others will suggest given this info.
Not sure what songs of BABYMETAL you've heard but I'm pretty sure one of them was Gimmie Chocolate given your description of "high-pitched" and anime. They were definitely younger then and so the higher pitched voices are kind of to be expected, especially from Yui-metal and Moa-metal, and can take some time to acclimate to (some longer than others).
But even then, I never felt that Su-metal (the lead singer in the middle with mic in hand) for the most part was high-pitched (though she can definitely go high in certain songs). You're right, she doesn't use much vibrato which I also initially thought made her voice "plain" but the more I heard her sing, the more I grew to appreciate her powerful clean vocals and just how well they paired with the heavy instrumentation. Now I just absolutely love her voice. I hope you'll grow to enjoy it, too, and I'm glad you're open to hearing more from them. You might not like all their songs but I think you'll like at least a few. Their catalog is eclectic and range in many metal and musical styles.
Oh, and also fun fact: Amaranthe opened for BABYMETAL back in 2019. Sleep Token as well!

I absolutely love Tatsuro, amazing groovy songs. Still listen to him! Haven't heard Utada's songs in a while, but still remember the lyrics to some songs and sing along.
I definitely have to give Babymetal another chance, I was left curious enough now that it wasn't so high pitched as I was expecting! I can understand how the music grows on you. That was my experience with Spiritbox in the first place, wasn't so keen on them but now I love them.
What song would you recommend me to listen to?

I am sorry, for someone in the process of transferring themselves into a literal caricature, it is hard to take your criticisms of them being too anime seriously, Just so you know Anime means animation it is simply the Japanese word for cartoon, in Japan Mickey Mouse is Anime, Southpark is Anime, the Little Mermaid is Anime, Japanese Anime is a representation of Japanese culture, not the other way around, I think this distinction is often lost on Americans who seem to think that Japanese people all cosplay as Anime characters when really it is the Anime artists imitating Japanese people and culture in their drawings. It is ok to not like their singing, I guess actual singing is a new thing for you as modern metal bands have guys who cannot sing front their bands, but back in my day when metal first came on the scene metal bands did have people who could sing front the band most of who surprise surprise all sang with high pitches to their voices.

I'm very sorry you got a bit upset. I can understand using stereotypical stuff to describe what I was hearing isn't correct. It's not always easy to search for the correct terms on the spot, as english isn't my native language. But I will try to not go for stereotypes and rather not comment, if I don't know how to say things correctly. My apologies! ❤️ You are correct with that the word "anime" actually means. But in a daily reference and specifically in english, people understand that you are talking about Japanese animation in particular, even if the word describes animation overall. In Japan they refer to all animations as "anime", but outside Japan it is mostly known as Japanese animation.
So I'd say the use of this word in the same expression happens around the world. It is so strongly connected to Japan. It is true that in Japanese anime they imitate Japanese culture a lot, I have my favourite anime movies and the culture is very present. But also the characteristic art style is very recognisable from other drawing styles. For example from the West. Just as Disney has a very distinct style. It really depends on the artist, the studio, the creators... But as said, there is not one style for Japanese anime, there are many, but they share a lot of similar attributes in their drawing styles and characters which make them very recognisable.
These are just honest reactions, and I respect your comments to the highest. I cannot please everyone and I take pride in not liking all bands for views and praising comments. I try to be as respectful as possible 🙌🏼
I'm sorry you feel like "actual singing" is new to me. I have no reason to compare modern day metal to the old days. Things change and evolve. We are in an era where musicians are extremely talented and I don't want to belittle that. Obviously musicians were talented back then as well. There are super shitty singers in modern bands as much as there are super shitty singers back in the days. It's just a matter of opinions. Personally I do not compare music/bands who are from two very different eras. Just the technology and possibilities have changed so much that it's an uneven comparison.

The funny thing about vibrato is that most singers have to use it and can't hold a steady note. The producer says she is a very rare vocalist that can sing without using vibrato. So actually, you got used to "normal" singers that need vibrato that it became what you just expected. She also does not have to swing up to her notes, she hits the note with no swelling up to a note. I never really thought about it until a few vocal coaches and people brought it up. It sounded so odd to me at first because 95% of the singers are actually poorly trained.

That is very true my friend! I tend to naturally have quite a strong vibrato and I once was in a band where they asked me to sing without it, and it was really hard! So that is a very good point! It takes skills to do it that way too. And probably if I heard SuMetal use more vibrato in Babymetal it would sound off, so I can understand that the straight forward clean note hitting is very fitting for this music!

Thank you for expressing why you didn't enjoy Su's vocals in a respectful and non annoying way, it was a fun reaction to watch.
As for some good ones, I'd recommend "Arkadia" ( live) if you like power metal, or "Tales of the Destinies" ( official audio ) if you like progressive metal.
You are still not going to be a great fan of vocals, but they should be manageable, maybe even enjoyable at times, but these two are just amazing instrumentally.

I get that people tend to say it's "anime" because of the cuteness, story-like theatric, and it's Japanese... But having heard/watched a lot of Anime stuffs - Babymetal only have a few songs that really sound like anime music, they go much more extreme into heaviness or cuteness or even both.

    • @michareacts
      @michareacts  Рік тому

Yes, this exactly! Japanese pop culture is very influenced by cutsie stuff in a lot of ways so that stereotype is quite strong. Surely there is so much more to Japan and Japanese culture, but unfortunately that stereotype gives a strong misconception of what there is to offer.

It's perfectly fine to not like high pitched girls vocals. Especially as a girl. As a straight guy I like girls voices :) No such thing as too feminine as far as I'm concerned.

Rather than making offensive substantiation, it would be better to simply say that I hate this band. I get irrationally offended when people say "anime" and I don't want vibrato, because Su does have a modest vibrato at key points and BABYMETAL has never been involved in anime.

    • @michareacts
      @michareacts  Рік тому

I understand, but please know that these are just opinions and we have our own ❤️ I did not mean it in an offensive way and as a singer myself, I tend to focus on vocals. It is not a question of facts, but of preferences ❤️ I'm not a native english speaker so I might not always use the absolute correct terms. I don't hate the band so that's why I don't say that.

@@michareacts>>> I am Japanese, so the nuance may change when I go through translation software. I apologize for that. Thank you for your reply nonetheless.
In Japan, vibrato used to be favored in popular songs, but it made the expression overly emotional and old-fashioned. Su sings in Megitsune in a Japanese enka style, which may be an example of emotional expression that is different from vibrato as well.

    We approach the long night
    Noisy wind is blowing
    The powerful gather here
    Holding the blade of heart
    Oath together, shout together
Let’s start this journey from here
The escape route is cut off
    The silence is broken
The time to battle has come
    Raise your hands
    The time has come.
    Stand up.
    Continue to your imagined tomorrow
It’s time to go your way
    Finish this open road
    Even short lived desire
    Goes against your destiny
    If it’s worth opposing,
    To sacrifice your heart
    The time has come.
    Stand up.
If you want to see the future
It’s time to go your way.
    Break through the barrier
    The time has come.
