Hello, when I add the file to the data merge sheet it doesn't show the title like what you have, but only untitles spreadsheet. I can't get into my textbox.. any idea what could be wrong?
I need the tickets to be numbered so when multiple pages are cut together, the numbers end up in the correct order. So the first number on page 1 will be 0001 and the first number on page 2 will be 0002 and so on. Not 1,2,3,4 on the same page. Is that possible? Also I'd like to fit 15 tickets on my page, not the 10 it is giving me ... I didn't add any spacing. Thanks for any pointers.
Great video. How can I separate the group tickets to email them as digital images to individuals. Is there an auto reply software that will send them to incoming emails? I'm looking to create sequential numbered images that will be sent as an auto reply to emails.
I don't know how to data merge with email, but I do think it's possible, because I've had emails that had a number or code in them that was specific to me.

I'm so glad to hear that! Is this something you're printing yourself? If so, you'll need to put that 'back page' on every other page (so, page 2, 4, 6, 8, etc). If a printing company is doing it, you can give them a separate file for the back page and tell them to put that on the back of each ticket.
This is a great video. You made the process very easy to understand. But I am having a issue. I am using inDesign CS6. It isn't wanting to number a second box on the end of my ticket. Do you think the older version is causing this problem?
I don't think this feature has changed in a very long time, but I can't remember needing to do this back when I was using CS6...so maybe it wasn't available? Seems odd, though. Sorry I don't have a better answer for you.

I had this problem at the printing house where I work, customer needed pages numbered like this 1 1 2 2 3 3 ...it's some kind of a receipt book in which one copy stays in the book and the other one goes to customer. Can you help me with this one? I already finished this one but guys sorting out the pages werent happy, they want cut and stack type of print... The way I would do this would be to add a column in your spread sheet for each ticket. Your first column would be 1-350, second would be 351-700, and so on. On your first page, you would have numbers 001, 351, 701, etc. After you print them, you can cut them, and they will stay in order that way, from 1-2800.
Do you have a tutorial on linking a google sheets table, with an InDesign file? Where when a number updates and the site would show you the most recent numbers.
InDesign won't update unless you go through the Data Merge process again (but it's very quick once you get the hang of it). I'm not sure what you mean by 'site' - do you mean the document?

If you print on a digital press you can use Fiery Impose to set up the job so when you gang it up you change it to "Collate-Cut" and it will automatically sort the stacks for you. If you don't, you'll have to do some manual layout. I would use a script named "MultiPageImporter". That script allows you to place specific pages from a PDF file into InDesign. It also allows you to move the imported pages so you can create a multi-up layout. For example, a 100 record ticket that you print 4-up, you can place pages 1-25 in row 1, then 26-50 in row 2, etc. and then you'll have everything in the proper sequence so you can stack cut it.
As Mike mentioned, imposition software will do this for you. We used to use one called Quite Imposing, although I don't even know if that's still around. :)
I would just do as many columns as the number-up of tickers. For example, let's say you have 4 tickets up on your sheet and you need 400 Tickers. On your spreadsheet do one column C1 from 1-100, C2, the second column, 101-200 and so on. This was a lifesaver. One question...when I type in my numbers to the google spread sheet and format them, it changes them to increments of 10. 001 goes to 011 and 002 goes to 022 so I end up with 011, 022, 033, and so on. Any suggestions?? Thx!!!

Thank you! It sounds like your page size might not be large enough to hold 2...or InDesign thinks that's the case (I've run into this before, even when 2 will easily fit). Try making your page size huge and see if it works then.

Sorry, I'm just now seeing this! Sometimes replies to comments get buried on our end, so it's best to always start a new comment instead of replying. It does sound like if it's greyed out, something isn't set up right. As far as taking a long time to process, that's most likely your computer's RAM. How much do you have?
This isn't about number. Several years back I knew how to setup tickets and copy in such a way that I just had to change the wording in the first ticket and it would immediately show a quotation within a yellow triangle so that all I had to do was click on the triangle and it instantly updated. Unfortunately I have forgotten how to do this. Can you help me out? When you have 24 tickets per page it is an easy way to do it. Far easier than step and repeat.
@@GDHT Just figured it out. Sure its not the way I did it before but who cares! What I did was produce the ticket then moved the original off the sheet onto the pasteboard. Then under Edits there is "Place and Link". I then placed into the first ticket area. Using "Step and Repeat" I moved it Horizontal across the page. Next highlighting the entire first row do the same vertical for the number that will fit on the page. At this point when you make a change in the ticket on the pasteboard all tickets on the sheet will be highlighted. Now if you go to the link panel it will also show all the errors. Hit the 4 lines and go to where it says "Update All Links" and you're done. I tried it where I did a data merge and it changed all the tickets in the merge. This is especially useful when you are asked to make tickets by various groups. You only need to make the change to the original on the clip board. I also use it for meeting cards or anything that requires updating a entire sheet with the same info.
I am working on making auction paddles for an upcoming auction. I am needing to make 500 paddles. My format is a double-sided paddle and they are 2-up per page. I am having a difficult time figure out how to make it so two text boxes are the same number but have 2 paddles per page.
Instead of creating 2 per page to start with, let InDesign handle putting multiples on the page - Just create the design with the 2 text boxes, like in the video. If you follow the tutorial, those 2 text boxes will have the same number. Then if more will fit on a page, InDesign will add them.
I found my issue - in case this helps anyone else. My ticket was 5.5" and my document was 11" wide. For some reason it didn't think I had enough space for 2 columns (apparently), so it was only making one. To fix this, I made my document slightly larger (11.25") and will just change it back to 11" before finalizing the file. Also found out that if you have a template layer (even if it's hidden/locked) it will mess things up. I simply made a new file and copied my design into there. THANK YOU, THANK YOU for the hours of time you've saved me!!

If it's a vector, it won't be blurry on output (this is just how InDesign shows vector objects).
Can you go back and edit the text once you have merged it? Like size, font, color, etc

This can most likely be fixed changing to a different number format. Format > Number...
it wont let me put more than one ticket on a page... how did you get it to put multiple tickets on one page?
You can have Indesign fit as many as possible on one page - it's a setting in the Create Merged Document popup (it's shown in the video, I believe).

@@GDHT - When I want to do the Data Merge now, it doesn't let me choose multiple records, as it is greyed out. Any ideas why? I can seem to do data merge regardless, but it takes forever to process... Anything I can do to make this go fast? I have 100 tickets to create.

Sorry, I'm just now seeing this! Sometimes replies to comments get buried on our end, so it's best to always start a new comment instead of replying. It does sound like if it's greyed out, something isn't set up right. As far as taking a long time to process, that's most likely your computer's RAM. How much do you have?

This isn't about number. Several years back I knew how to setup tickets and copy in such a way that I just had to change the wording in the first ticket and it would immediately show a quotation within a yellow triangle so that all I had to do was click on the triangle and it instantly updated. Unfortunately I have forgotten how to do this. Can you help me out? When you have 24 tickets per page it is an easy way to do it. Far easier than step and repeat.
That's not sounding familiar to me. Maybe that was in a previous version of InDesign? Although I don't think the process has changed in a long time.

Just figured it out. Sure its not the way I did it before but who cares!
What I did was produce the ticket then moved the original off the sheet onto the pasteboard. Then under Edits there is "Place and Link". I then placed into the first ticket area. Using "Step and Repeat" I moved it Horizontal across the page. Next highlighting the entire first row do the same vertical for the number that will fit on the page.
At this point when you make a change in the ticket on the pasteboard all tickets on the sheet will be highlighted. Now if you go to the link panel it will also show all the errors. Hit the 4 lines and go to where it says "Update All Links" and you're done. I tried it where I did a data merge and it changed all the tickets in the merge.
This is especially useful when you are asked to make tickets by various groups. You only need to make the change to the original on the clip board. I also use it for meeting cards or anything that requires updating a entire sheet with the same info.

I am working on making auction paddles for an upcoming auction. I am needing to make 500 paddles. My format is a double-sided paddle and they are 2-up per page. I am having a difficult time figure out how to make it so two text boxes are the same number but have 2 paddles per page.
Also, these have to fold in the middle so they must be on one page.
Instead of creating 2 per page to start with, let InDesign handle putting multiples on the page - Just create the design with the 2 text boxes, like in the video. If you follow the tutorial, those 2 text boxes will have the same number. Then if more will fit on a page, InDesign will add them.

Question: What if my tickets are smaller, and I want 2 columns per page?
I found my issue - in case this helps anyone else.
My ticket was 5.5" and my document was 11" wide. For some reason it didn't think I had enough space for 2 columns (apparently), so it was only making one. To fix this, I made my document slightly larger (11.25") and will just change it back to 11" before finalizing the file.
Also found out that if you have a template layer (even if it's hidden/locked) it will mess things up. I simply made a new file and copied my design into there.
