I have a 1942 production G33/40 and have fired numerous rounds of the same Yugo production 8mm and while muzzle blast is definitely noticeable, the recoil isn’t “unpleasant”. I say this and I am not a stocky guy.
Just for the info - it is a czechoslovakian rifle actually. It is carbine version of Vz.24 rifle. This Vz.33 or G33(after german occupation) was made exclusively for czechoslovakian gendarmerie (gendarmerie in czechoslovakia was law-enforcement half-military half-police unit. Gendarmerie's duty consited from regular police activity such as patroling to criminal investigation which was provided by special investigation units. In 1938 during the Munich crisis or Munich treason for czechs, gendarmerie was providing duties such as border patroling and riot control between german minorities alongside czechoslovakian border. Troughout the ww2 many members were putting mostly passive resistance to german occupation force and in 1945 they were part of resistance actions. After the war they were reorganized and when communists has taken the rule over the country they were completedly merged into more communist-like law-enforcement unit. Many of very experienced member were dismissed from their job for their pro-democracy orientation). So back to the rifle. When germany and Hitler occupied czechoslovakia, simply every weapon of former czechoslovak army were taken a used by wehrmacht and renamed to german. So this was renamed from Vz.33 CETN (Mk.33 GEND in english) to G33/40. Czechoslovakian weapons were highly rated and czechoslovakia in its time was world's largest weapon exporter in the world. So this is why germany used czechoslovakian weapons and tanks for their war effort. Most of these captures guns were used on the eastern front to fight against soviets. I am non-english speaker so let me please apologize for any mistakes. Have a nice day.
Very brutal carbine. I have shot a Persian carbine once with 20 rounds. It kicked my ass with pain on my shoulder and put me to sleep with exhaustion after firing it will plenty of Ibuprofen after. This has the same effect.
I have one of these. I got a new barrel for it, kept the original. Found a new sight hood for it and a sling. Excellent shooter, but the recoil is indeed quite stout.
Great video. At first I thought you weren't setting the butt deep enough into your shoulder. Then I watched the slow motion and learned that it was just how the weapon recoils. Now I have to get one, lol.
Gewehr 33/40 also known as vz. 33 is a gun built in czechoslovakia and after german occupation in 1938, germany liked it and they kept building it in Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. I will put wikipedia link if anyone would like to know more about it. Vz 33 : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vz._33
me and a friend we bouth have G33/40s :) my friend got hold on s a mint enfield jungle carabine. the enfield stayed in his kabinet for a couple of years do to lack of 303 ammo. one day he called, he had got his handso on some british surplus. the brits had complained the recoil on that one. we shot a mag each, looked at each other and said: they have never shot a G33/40 :)
Great thanks…. Now I’m going to flinch like mad when I get my K98a back from its 30-06 conversion (shooting M2 ball pressure loads only though). Barrel was shot out but the reciever was still in spec so had the barrel sent off to have a duplicate made in 30-06
I love and have an array of military surplus rifles stemming from Long heavy rifles to the light jungle carbine and the g33 40 carbines.... I'm an old man now and crippled but I used to be built like a linebacker and didn't really care about recoil now I'm in precision shooting you can develop a hell of a Flinch I still like to shoot those light rifle carbine do what I do I saw the old man 45 Hickok every time he does is he gets one of those slip on recoil pads and it does the trick.... I have an old 1886 Winchester 45-90 with a crescent butt plate I put a slip on recoil pad and it does the trick every time... how you keep your gun in original condition and enjoy your g33 40 carbine they don't make em like that anymore.... Buffalo arms also makes a real neet shooting jacket I should say recoil pad attachment that goes to your right or left shoulder.....hope that helps.... I have a 1944 polish Mosin nagat. that kicks like a Russian mule from hell what the recoil pad on the slip on it does the trick you can also put some dr. Scholl's gel in the recoil pad if needed. .
I went to a range day here in NC with my vz24 and Rc k98k and lent it out for a k98az and steyr 95m and yeah suffice to say I dont like full power 8mm or 8x56r out of short rifles or carbines.
yes, that's the real stuff for a man. You should stand slightly at an angle with the stock against your shoulder and not completely lock it up. Then it's less painful. This weapon is suitable for very long range.
Shoots steel butt 8X57 carbine with full charge ammo while wearing T shirt....I learned a long time ago it don't take much gun to hurt given those wardrobe malfunctions.....and no rubber pad.
I've shot rifles that recoil like that before. They are not fun at all. Let's be real though, anything larger than the 6.5s for infantry weapons are overpowered.
I am always surprised by shooters who complain about recoil. I have been shooting this rifle for years along with 3006 9.3 x74 and .375 H and H, not to mention shotgun slugs, duck and goose loads. please stop whining about recoil. You would not make much of an African hunter.
Don't forget that mountain troops wore thick jackets. The recoil wouldn't have been much of an issue for them.

Good Job Jan!
Very good history thanks!
I LOVE THE 33_/40 SMALL RING
ACTION. HARD TO FIND
I have wanted one for a long time. Reduced reloads are almost a must
Gotta love german weapons, absolutely beautiful piece of work.
Americans..
Saying ,,gotta love German marches, uniforms, aesthetics, weapons" etc. but still fought us two times.
BTW that weapon is Czech and originally designed for gandarmerie.
@@Janus98alf with paul mausers design :P repurposed by german

I remember the first time I shot an FR8 in .308, kicked liked an angry mule. Short rifles in larger calibers

I feel the same way about my FR-8. The thing kicks like a mule, but damn if it isn't a cool gun.

Be a good candidate for some light gallery/plinking loads
Thanks for a good ,honest opinion

My G33/40 rarely goes to the range. I'd rather carry the 98k for what weight difference there is.

That's interesting, I thought the az was roughly the same length as a k?
@@echodelta2172 it is however its significantly lighter , I'd estimate nearly a pound off the weight of a k98k
Do a precision vid on it
Thx for your vid and efforts
ps: i have big hands and the thumb allways make up my right eye with nice blue mascara.
A gun that requires correct technic....very firm set in the shoulder. Styer M95 carbine with the now expensive late 1930s ammo....also very unplesant.

Is this chambered in 8mm? My great grandfather brought one back from Germany after the war.
After the war there were so many german rifles left in norway so the norwegian army decided to rebarrel them into 30-06, imagine one of these in 30-06
So I'm curious, could you compare that recoil to a Mosin M44 or M38? Pit two of those shorties next to each other and see which is stiffer?
M44 is definitely more comfortable to shoot. Your shoulder will definitely hurt after 20 rounds out of a g33/40.
I would really expect them to be similar. I know my m44 is kind of a rude dude with some ammo types.
I’m not sure what number I am, I just want to see the Mauser
Do you have a CZECH VZ 12/33 BRNO?
Not too surprising. It's a lighter but utilizing the same service round as the heavier '98 K rifles.
A kicking mule is a kicking mule, a little heavier and longer is ok if it's a pleasure to shoot, no doubt accuracy will be better
It would be sweet to have something like this in 7x57 :-)
That’s what this is...

Yeah they definitely planned on some guys with big thick cotton shirts and multiple layers to be firing these rifles for the most part
How to reduce the recoil? Put pillow on buttstock, lol
Nice video thanks

I disagree, 7mm mauser is better for these rifles.
Sounds and looks like a 30-06 with a monte carlo stock hunting rifle...plus a little
If it would be legal, I would send you some Wehrmacht steelcase ammo made 1942
It's legal where I live.
The Problem is, I may not send the ammo.... but just in case you will get some, remember it is corosive
It should have been in 7mm Mauser..
Try a No5 Enfield lol
