      @@averyj5446 it is rather strange how African states are grouped up into one mythical entity.
      Most African countries themselves are less unified and homogenous than Europe, with often wildly different groups being in one nation.
      It's somewhat like grouping Russians and French people together, namely, it makes no sense beyond, " They're on the same continent."

      @SCBM Yeah, I'd like to also say the continent of Africa, has a very wide range of climates, since it's very vertical on the map. It's very different from across, which mediates so much difference across each neighbour.

    • @iberrypa
      @iberrypa 4 роки тому +35

      Having visited Ethiopia i would bet all this takes place near the capital too. There is a huge amount of diversity in Ethiopia but most of the development is limited to certain areas. It might be the only realistic way to do it because of the high cost of infrastructure improvements like power and roads to support businesses. I would be worried about regional conflicts in Ethiopia starting again if the development continues to be so unequally distributed. China is also loaning a lot of money and if something like covid results in a real recession African countries could really struggle to make interest payments. Hopefully it all works out for Ethiopia and other African countries but I would think places like Vietnam and India would be lower risk, net better returns and generally be more likely to see rapid development like china did.

    The title is then misleading unless this is part of a greater set of stories about Africa, if so then ignore my rant. If that is not the case, then telling the story of Africa's success through the experience of only one of the many countries that inhabit the continent is simply rehashing an age-old mantra of the western media - simplify our view of Africa as a whole.
    In a nutshell, one country does not represent the continent. And most importantly, the continuation of the portrayal of Africa as one people instead of a dynamic patchwork of cultures and countries is laughable and irresponsible in 2020. C'mon Economist.

    Thank you for the great work you guys have done at The Economist to create a video that highlights the various ways that Ethiopia, an African country, has made strides towards improving itself socially and economically. The statistics, individual stories, and analyses are enlightening. However, as has previously been mentioned in other comments, it would have been nice had you done the same for other countries around the continent in different geographic areas such as Egypt (North Africa), Nigeria and its focus on producing natural resources (West Africa), Kenya (East Africa), and South Africa (the region implied by the name). How these countries have grown and key areas where they could develop themselves further based on their current trajectory would be great to see in another video with a few personal entrepreneurial stories as examples. I love the work you guys are doing and I understand that such a video would probably need to be much longer and; thus, require a lot more work. I would still love to see something like that, though.
    Thank you and peace!

    Years ago I read a science based article where it says the genetic variation between people of a single African village can literally encompass half the the world population. In essence Africa is not only diverse culturally but also Genetically among its people. The Media needs to recognize Africa is not homogeneous and it definitely should not be treated as such. If a certain solution works in Ethiopia it does not necessarily mean it can work in places like Zimbabwe, chad or Angola . Each country is unique. Ethiopia can definitely inspire other African countries to come out with their own solutions as it has for itself. Eventually all countries in the continent will be able to rise up and educate their populations while their economies blossom.
