It’s almost as if the West is somehow the victim here. In giving historical context you forgot to mention the role western countries played in delaying or outright fighting against African independence. When talking about Chinese miners polluting Ghana you forgot to mention how Shell has polluted & corrupted Nigeria for decades. In the section on Chinese political influence you don’t mention how Shell was deeply involved in the trial and execution of Ken Saro Wiwa in Nigeria. When you talk of Chinese military presence in Africa you conveniently don’t mention how many active US troops there are across the continent. The West has been complicit in China’s advances in Africa by their absence and disregard for the continent. Africa is a free market and everyone is welcome to throw their hat in the ring.
Well said. The only reason the west is concerned is because they know china is actually building tangible infrastructure in Africa instead of jut straight up exploiting the continent like they do all the time. I mean they talk about debt trap yet they loan those same countries billions in loans so they can “fund” infrastructure they know wouldn’t get built yet they turn their eyes away but still come back for those same loans with massive interest. China is going to be welcomed in Africa so long they keep building infrastructure and assets.
Just like they always deny some western countries came to China, to India, to Asia, to “colonize” us all. How many Asian countries didn't have a history of being invaded by western military powers in history, I wonder. “Colonize” here is a nice word to replace all crimes made. 🤔

Worst is most Western loans are never for infrastructure. Once Africa received the money, they can never repay these loans from the west as there is no infrastructure to help Africa improve their economy. You can build a factory with empty hands! You need roads and railways to transport products to ports for export to make more income for the country. This is where the west loans never helped Africa.
We are building a mutually beneficial relationship with China. Africa is where China was 30 years ago, the Chinese see the potential growth and want to share in it. The west sees Africa as a charity case which cannot function without them. As Africans we are smart enough to see the difference and welcome any nation that wants to hold hands and develop together. With china’s wealth of infrastructure knowledge and socialist nature, it translates well to the African continent. Deals made on our terms that benefit both China and Africa will always be welcome! Africa is not a charity case and we are not helpless, we don’t need protection from the west, in fact it would benefit us more if we drove the west out of Africa completely. China is interested in trade and builds roads and infrastructure. US and western Europeans are interested in regime change and bring in arms and sanctions... The choice for Africa couldn't be simpler!
No, it‘s not ok what some Europeans did. At least that‘s what we get taught in school in Switzerland, but I do think Europeans generally lack empathy for the African people and the Asian people. They can be racist and ignorant, however, Asians and Africans can do the same. So just because Europeans are not involved does not mean there can not be tension. I think getting more engaged as Europeans in a productive way would be cool and if China helps developing Africa and does not hold them back that would be great. The video also ends with the conclusion that they maybe should start caring more. I do think Africa has a lot of potential.
We can't change what occurred in the past. We can only steer the present. One simple question from a citizen of the world : When the west, which occupied and colonized the entire African continent for centuries was at its zenith from 1960s to the 2010s, what did it do to assist Africa? It was involved in more wars to exploit the resources but no real effort was made to help African progress.. China could not help much in for a while as well, except to help build a rail system in Zambia even while it was impoverished. When China started to assist more starting from the 1990s, Europe got alarmed. Why ? You Europeans didn't give Africa a thought, much less any useful assistance for decades. And yet when others started to get involved, your politicians started to smear and make accusations. You didn't help for a long time and now you're trying to stop others from helping? And you call yourselves Christians? Where were you when needs were unanswered for decades? Why didn't you extend your hand to help? Now you're worried others might do what you've done for centuries and you're casting others in your own mindset and ideology. Don't stay callous. Act like Christians.
We did a lot of wrong doing in Africa. But poverty and underdevelopment is usually caused by conflict, weak governance and corruption. When the western colonizers left they where simply replaced by corrupt african leaders who could now fill their pockets or conflict broke out. And keep in mind China is building your infrastructure with Chinese companies and labor. Little knowhow is being transferred so after the bare hanging fruit is plucked by building infrastructure can Africans than grow businesses by themselves?
Western countries must be jealous of the progress China is bringing to Africa. At least China treats African countries as partners and helping countries develop infrastructure.
'Western concerns are understandable" I hear you say? What about the needs and concerns of Africans? No, western concerns are not understandable. The majority of Africans are not complaining. I dare you to take a poll between French and Chinese perceptions in Africa for example. Africa is chronically lacking in physical infrastructure--a highly statis prerequisite for economic development. China is helping Africa build it.
Yes. Very true. This report just seems to want to fear monger by colonialism. “Keep them down because it’s always been like that”. Technically Africa is part of the West. They are remnants of Western empires much like the USA used to be part of the British empire. They adopted Western values like democracy. The fact that Economist chose to pick 1-2 project that has negative impact and completely ignored 100 other project that provided essential infrastructure (positive impact) for Africans speaks volumes about their intention. Moreover, even the bad sides are speculation such as "they might do this", "they might do that" etc.
The complaints of the publisher are mostly GROUNDLESS. The West has had 400 YEARS to examine it's CONDUCT and TREATMENT of Africa and it's peoples. One thing this kind of reporting ignores is the fact that Africans can think for themselves when making these deals. What if Africa is actually leveraging it's resources to get infrastructure built. Besides Western dominance doesn't have a future without Africa's resources both mineral and population.
Africa is historically corrupt with and education system that is very poor. I hope the decision that they make is the correct one. I suspect they will be used and the poorest will be abused to the fullest.
The Chinese can’t continue these projects without the guarantee of safe sea lanes provided by the American navy. The US is pulling out of the Indian Ocean and already piracy and international shipping seizures are on the rise in the region. True. This is pure business. Of course China loan the money for development in order to trade something. At least China comes to do business not destroy the country or change the government.
If western governments are worried about the morality of the Chinese loans they should solve it the capitalism way and create competitor loans they can check. I mean in this piece there is a part where people are arguing that China asks the loan to be paid in full as opposed to more lenient loans from the west. That statement is by itself ridiculous because 1. African countries are not beggars or children that require the charities of the west which by the way have never disclosed how much money is made and how much is given away. And 2. Predatory loans are like a staple of capitalism and a very real thing in the US you know student loans, medical loans, housing loans all of them had been the cause of mayor impacts in the lives of their population was is not the 2008 housing market crash because of poorly managed loans.
It's also an obvious lie. The Chinese restructure their loans all the time and provide loan forgiveness in times of economic downturns. The very idea that the Chinese demand that their loans are repaid in full is countered by even western media coverage of Chinese loans.

For centuries the Europeans conquered, enslaved and looted Africa leaving it to utter poverty. Now as time changes it is China's turn that helps Africa build amazing infrastructure like modern roads, railways and ports. Though it all make Africa indebted to China as they have no option. The modernisation of infrastructure will lift up millions of Africans out of poverty gradually opening windows for new opportunities. As far as the huge debt is concerned, in every country the coroporates are doing the same. Now the West is desperate and jealous of China, that's it.
Did you even read what you said like come on. The reason you are welcoming of China is a complete retaliation of the west but in the end China will be your new colonizer because you will be INDEBTED to them as they are building 90% of the infrastructure in africa. Western countries do not believe in the reciprocal relationship between China and Africa, because they have never treated African countries equally, so they think that all countries will only colonize and enslave African people like what they did. Yes, Chinese loans are not free, but relatively fair. We are doing business with African brothers, we are not condescending charity, charity is one-off, but business can be sustainable. There is a Chinese proverb, it is better to teach a man to fish than to give him a fish. We believe that African brothers and sisters just need time to learn, after all we have been stolen so much by western countries, like time, dignity, wealth
Chinese government does not even treat its people equally. You must know of it, as you are chinese. Racism in China is given. Look at what you have done to your Hong Kong brothers.

I can't see any issue with the new wave of FDI in Africa. It's not like the west hasn't exploited the continent at every opportunity over the centuries. The CAP and insurmountable debt compounded by currency parity are some modern examples. China has simply taken the 'trade not aid' slogan and ran with it. Meanwhile the east has become interdependent and independent from it's colonial past and why not? A lack of credible alternatives and overpopulation have made it inevitable imo. Of course, there is a learning curve when it comes to the environment, but it's not like a modern industrial revolution hasn't been on the cards since the turn of the century. Innovation is it's own phenomenon and the west will be caught dragging it's heels in the near future. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
It’s actually pretty interesting that this video specifically talks about how China had given loans to other African countries, but no one (or very few people) mentions that during the 2009 Financial Crisis it was China who bailed out two European Union countries (if not more), and that the two largest banks of China have been giving out more loans in the past decade than the World Bank itself. That speaks a lot about why the West always complain, yet it doesn’t act. President Macron once asked why did Portugal took a loan from the Chinese, and the Portuguese prime-minister said “There was no one else willing to take up the loan, so we did what we had to.”. The West lost its powers only because they lacked vision and failed to see outside of their box. It may seem like a lie, but the world will be better with China and the US (and in the future, surely, other countries) as superpowers. At that time, no country will have to appease anyone. Each country plays their own cards and plays their own hand, and no one will interfere.
I agree with with in the WHOLE. Though I would emphasise that the Belt and Road Initiative is the ONLY credible DEVELOPMENT strategy out there. The West approach was DISCREDITED even the IMF and World Bank itself as far back as the 1980s . The current proposal "Build back better "is uncosted and is in political trouble in the US Congress. Therefore HOW can the West claim it's a serious partner in ANYTHING?!!
The conflict between China and the United States is structural. China wants development and the United States wants hegemony; China fears that U.S. hegemony impedes China's development, and the United States fears that China's development must threaten U.S. hegemony. This matter has nothing to do with so-called morality or human rights.
Chinese are doing what no western company or government is willing to do in Africa and for Africans. The West has always seen Africa as a second class continent with second class persons not worthy of development. The Chinese are dealing with Africans as equals and most importantly as people with development ambitions that are worth of being developed. May be the West should also try to support Africa’s development on an equal footing as partners in development.
The west never saw Africa as 2nd class continent . It was always either 3rd class or 4th class . They have banned sl*very but the behaviour always remained. The west would never help any country unless in exchange of huge resources. Their so called military-peace missions is just on purpose of selling weapons and looting .
Forget the income from the projects. The point is the projects keep benefiting the population from the get go. For instance, the Addis Ababa light rail network in Ethiopia was built using Chinese loans. For the first few years of its operation, all of its profit went to China. However, since the completion of the project, Ethiopians used it well ans it led to the creation of so much wealth.

Long time ago, China was also a semi-colony of the West, and its people were in dire straits. We know the pain of the colonial people. However, in ancient China's Tang Dynasty, China was once the world's largest trading country, and the country with the most friendly diplomatic relations in the world at that time. In dealing with The Arabs, Iran, Japan, and Korea, we all respect each other and cultural exchange. This win-win national foreign policy, totally against the colonial policy of the Anglo-Sasson nations, are two completely different civilized values.
Definitely it is as Gyude Moore says. The West needs to stop seeing this as being all about the West and China, but to truly see, appreciate, and respect Africa and African people and their place in the world.

People need to think clearly about what they want. Do people simply think Chinese people have money and envy them? That's right, it took two or even three generations of people to work for more than 10 hours, 12 hours or more.
Since the Qing Dynasty, we have been beaten and looked down upon because China is lagging behind.
Until today, China has finally achieved what it is today, but it is still looked down upon by many people, people don't want to believe us, people don't want to listen to what we have to say.
OK, Now we want to help others, still suspected, we know, to pick up the crown, first need to learn to bend down, the crown is very heavy, so it will be difficult to straighten up....

China have always had a friendly trade relation with Africa, going back to the 1400's. When Westerners got to Africa, it was very unpleasant for Africans. While US has 27 military bases, France has 6 and Britain 7 in Africa, why so concerned with 1 Chinese military base. China builds infrastructure bringing economic opportunities for both countries. US government funds anti-China propagandists in Africa as well, so it is hard to know if the anti-China sentiment by Africans is genuine.

@Astrophageyep Yes, Chinese Admiral Zheng He led diplomatic expeditions and developed trade relations across the globe, including in east Africa, by the order of the Chinese Emperor. One simple question from a citizen of the world : When the west, which occupied and colonized the entire African continent for centuries was at its zenith from 1960s to the 2010s, what did it do to assist Africa?
It was involved in more wars to exploit the resources but no real effort was made to help African progress..

Precisely over 1000 bases. The Pentagon CAN'T audit its OWN financies and the US PRESIDENT can't tell us HOW BASES it has
No, we shouldn't, the West should worry about their own life and problems.
Isn't it surprising (actually it's not) that The Economist produces a 12-minute video on Africa and the video is all about the interests of the West and China, and there is absolutely no mention of the interests of Africa itself? Racism manifests itself in so many ways. This is a disgusting report steeped in colonialism and neocolonialism. Where is Africa in all of this?
They don't care about Africa, they are just jealous of China. Because their generation of westerners is suffering to see the decline of western hegemony.
It's literally the question of the video. Why *would* they talk about African interests if it's not relevant to the question. Also they literally discuss a story related to Ghana and how many there perceive China lol Finish watching the video
Interestingly, all those ‘trapped’ by China debt are the fastest growing countries in the continent. 160B sounds a lot. Yet Egypt alone borrowed MORE than that from the west. Yet few of the debt produced infrastructure for the people.
great point!!!
Worried? No
Jealous? Absolutely
Like Ukraine, All countries have freely right to choose their partners. How the West should worry about African countries's choice? If they worry, they should compete with China over the business, investments and helping African countries to build.
This propaganda is to make Africans destroy the continent against Chinese development that's the exactly propaganda they do in Ukraine now Ukraine is on fire.
they can't, they come to exploit, not for doing business.
Also Chinese don't interfere in local politics, don't overthrow elected gov or don't pit one ethnic against the other unlike the west
They are imposing their iron fist 👊 dictatorship of who can be our friend, they want us to follow them like the way they stole our resources and took them to Europe
exactly
Western countries, why don't you also invest in infrastructure as well as a wide variety of value added manufacturing industries as well?
So that we can develop ourselves and have no need for their 'charity' and finally get rid of the white saviour syndrome? Never! What would they be then? They need us on our knees so they can continue to pillage and steal whatever is left.
Africa developing is NOT in western interest
They want Africa depends on them forever
Without cheap resources from Africa and Russia - Europe is doomed, so it's in their best interest to keep Africa poor and undeveloped. Europe didn't spend a dime to develop anything meaningful in Africa, only mines to extract resources for it's own industries and troops to protect this mines.

Yes, then the West saw the rich resources in China, and they wanted to colonize parts of China. Hypocrites.
China was a big mouth, between 1958-1961, 30 million Chinese died of starvation.
The raise of China based on the stupidity of the West.
Why doesn't the economist do a hit piece on the IMF ripping Sri Lanka off, which accounts for about 70% of the debt of that nation.
In their reports, you won’t see that part, but will highlight CN
Definitely it is as Gyude Moore says. The West needs to stop seeing this as being all about the West and China, but to truly see, appreciate, and respect Africa and African people and their place in the world.
It is the time that USA and Western world to reflect what they've done to African countries rather than just envy the progress achieved by Africans with the help of China and Chinese people
We need Chinese investments in Africa more than before. Unlike the West, China is improving African countries' infrastructure development. The biggest debt traps are from the World Bank and IMF. AT least China would like to see every country prosper and the deals are on a win-win base, how is that debt trap? Compete with the Chinese or ship out.
West or East, they are for their own INTEREST.... Dear Africans, we have NO TRUE PARTNERS... Let's wake up, let's UNFREEZE the brains of our so called leaders. We have what it takes to be a global power.
Maybe Africa can also stop reading the bible then.
All the reports are based on the ideology. There is no fair news at all.
You are right. The biggest debt traps are from the World Bank and IMF. The west is talking as though loans from World Bank and IMF are free. Both are western controlled institutions. When they say 'Jump', you have to say 'how high from where we jump down'
Because it is once again China treating africa as a charity case something Africans hate Europeans for doing. Nothing infrastructure wise in africa that is being built is African it’s all Chinese. Once again outside people coming in to build your nation and see them as friends when you are being used
I am Asian, and respect China and Africa mutual relation. Africa needs friends to rely on, friends who are not racist like the west white supremacy idea. Africa deserves to build their own country and chose their friends to grow together. Asia and Africa has a wonderful historical background from long ago.
You just want African Countries to follow the Western country's Foreign Policies and IMF/WorldBank directives.
The wesT is not to be trusted. Everyone has been on the receiving end of their bs. It is time for the rest of the world to come together and prosper together.
