When I had small skulls like rodents or birds, I just set them in my mom's garden for ants to clean. No complaints on that method. Always wanted a dermestid beetle colony but never had enough bones in need of cleaning to justify it. This video is awesome though!!!!!

Great video!! Great way to honor an old boy. I live on a hunting ranch in West Texas and anytime my husband and I find something we want to keep that died out here, we just wire it to our fence posts around the house. Once it’s been picked clean and the West Texas sun has done its job, we boil it once in a similar fashion and pressure wash it. We typically have to do a bit of restoration on the horns but not much. We use mop and glo also! Great trick! They always come out pretty dang white and never a problem with smell or bugs. Great job!

You’re definitely a pro. One tip I use when cleaning skulls like antelope is I drill a small pin hole before I slip off the horn that way I can line the shell up on the bone exactly the way it came off. When it’s fit back in the exact position I put a small piece of wire back into the hole to hold the horn on the bone. Great job thanks for sharing.

The proper acronym in plumbing literature is HWT (Hot Water Tank) google it
Having HWT distinguishes it on purpose and is the proper way to describe it without causing confusion.
Its a redundant name due to the fact you can have many tanks in your mech room like glycol storage tanks, soft water brine tanks, expansion tanks, pressure building tanks or supplemental hot water holding tanks to name a few. As well as multiple ways to heat your water. Is it an on demand system or boiler / condensing boiler system?

Hey, I just discovered your channel. I used to do museum work at Cabrillo Aquarium in San Pedro, and I've cleaned a fair bit of bones. I can definitely confirm how hard the work actually is. It's one of those things that just seems so easy until you start doing it. Biggest thing I'd done was a Risso's Dolphin skull, which I'd say was somewhere between the size of that bison and steer, obviously without the horns. I really wish I'd known about using a power washer because it could've saved me many hours of hand cleaning with knives and steel brushes. Live and learn, as they say! Really great work on this, man!

I started getting into taxidermy a while ago, but usually never have to clean things off since I usually buy from cheap sellers but have good skulls and bones. But I’m really into birds and have started learning how to clean off wings to keep the feathers preserved and not worrying abt damaging tendons, and I finished cleaning one not too long ago and I’m able to fold the wing out and what not. This actually taught me some things about cleaning so ty, even if I don’t have all the stuff to do this, and I plan to go hunting for my first time soon so I hope I’ll be able to bring something home from it :)

Hey man! Sweet video, I'm a euro guy and custom base maker for a taxidermist in texas. I thought I was the only one who thought of using dawn as a soak. I honestly had only good experiences with just a dawn and water soak for a single day. I got a customer his Longhorn in a weekend it it came out well, no grease spots. I think yours ultimately looked better because you spent more time, but I loved watching your process. I'm lucky enough to get free skulls of animals people don't want during deer season so maybe I'll run your method on a couple and see how they turn out. Keep up the great work!

The grease spots add character to the animal that once lived. Taxidermy is an art and it is up to the artist to decide what's best to represent the animal.

This was on my recommended and enjoyed watching it. 3-4 years ago my brother wanted to use a cow skull for a Halloween costume and he got a cow head from the local butcher. We did not know anything about cleaning bones so we left the skull out in the lot besides our house, 10-15 meters away, to let the ants do their job. The skull was VERY stinky, we could smell it from our own rooms 😂 at night some stray dogs robbed parts of it because they were very attracted to the rotten smell and grease on it. It was still so stinky and full of rotten meat after two days that we ended up getting rid of it! If there is a next time I would suggest my brother to follow this tutorial instead 😅

Just cleaned my first steer skull using your video as a guide. This is hard work! One question though. I pulled off the horns from the bone cores and pulled out all the meat and cartilage that was inside the horns. I used dawn dishwashing liquid and a round scrub brush to clean out the inside of the horns. After 3 days, I can still smell them. They smell like boiled beef. it's not a rotten smell, just a beef smell. What can I do to get rid of the smell? By the way, thanks for the awesome video.
