Piano alone is soooo impactful,, for me. Eerie sound, pushes me to my brink. I play it over and over and over and over...Then, when lyrics are added..... my heart breaks. I knew Lennon. At the end, I was staying around the corner, a day from my birthday..... I can play this on the piano..... Powerful in every way.
Not hate, just things got discombobulated after Brian Epstein passed. They had to figure out how to cope with legal issues, and the like. Paul wanted Linda's father to be their lawyer, while John wanted Allen Klein. Tensions got thick and then when they finally broke up, feelings were hurt and stuff was said. Took them a couple of years before it all smoothed over.
Some bleak proof that you can have a wife, cute kids and a microwave doing their cheerful sounds in the background and at the same time, be so brokenhearted and depressed as he sounds in this song. And I don't think he's performing for the sake of making a sad song, it sounds like a genuine and maybe drunk display of his emotions at the time. Gosh, their break up was so sad.
Beautiful. At one point during this rather extraordinary and insightful recording, I heard pain? I heard genuine pain in his voice. Nobody else, in my opinion, could sing that kind of pain... nobody else that is, with but one exception? His "Dear Friend". Appreciate it being shared. Painful and quite masterful.
This is a gorgeous demo. Usually Paul's demos are so raw that they're grating. I especially love how he switches from 'Are you afraid or are you blue?' with 'is it true?'. In the final he removes any speculation of depression and keeps it a challenge. This is also a gorgeous video, so many great photos that capture the essence of their relationship.
I honestly view what happened to their relationship as a tragedy. There was so much unresolved and unsaid. Lennon was a deeply troubled person and was taken before he could even live passed his own bravado. It’s so sad that one of his main fears was Paul not loving him but 40 years after his death Paul’s love for John has remained strong & steadfast. I wish more people could see passed the implosion of their breakup and the ugliness that resulted from it and just see two people who loved each other despite hurting one another in the wake of heartbreak.
