Arms of the Betrayer in Explorer's Guide to Wildemount! | Nerd Immersion

- This time I cover the opposite of the Vestiges of Divergence, the Arms of the Betrayer. These are artifacts that unlock/awaken similar to the Vestiges but they are evil and slightly more powerful. They are all weapons and I like pretty much all of them, but the Warhammer and the Rapier are definitely my favorite. Which one is your favorite? Also for those who were worried, my little guy is feeling much better!

25:10 Will of the Talon.. 5d6 Bonus Action x5. Not bad.
Feel free to correct any errors and spelling. Thanks 😊
I suppose for the will of the talon, that's intended to be a more iron clad order, the tyrannical subjugation of Innocents, and the "decisive action" would be the disregard of those Innocents. Also, a devil would define "fair share" a little differently than a mortal would...
I can't kill him it's not bahamut's way

@@Nildread You couldn't pay me to even consider that god awful character remotely attractive.
@@p00tis that's good because odd considering is free
I found your videos since I'm a critter but I've got to say I really like the sit down and review format your videos are in and after the explorers guide is through I'm looking forward to what you get up to next
I actually find these weapons to be interesting in the view that I can trick my players and figure out what their true morality is.
Didn’t they introduce weapons that recharge their abilities during dusk instead of dawn? You would think that would flavor better with these evil weapons instead of the standard.
Right?
I wonder if it’s an attempt to possibly hide it’s true nature from some groups.
Especially with the Lolth weapon, considering its exalted ability is only useful at night or in a really dark dungeon.
Simplicity?
I've been playing with the idea of transforming Agony (the flail Vestige from Tal'dorei guide) into one of the Betrayer arms instead. It fits better thematically in my mind with flails being the weapon of choice to Yeenoghu.
I cant tell if its the fact that villains inherently are cooler or more interesting to me, or if these actually had more time put into them. Either way I'm about to put these in the hands of some really nasty bosses!
I think it's the personality of sentient weapons and how they tend to be evil-ish. It sends the mind racing thinking about the RP possibilities.
I like how Will of the Talon's breath weapon functions better than a Dragonborn's. Aye, it ain't easy being green
Hey man, just wanted to let you know that your content is awesome. Please keep putting videos out. It's one of the few things I look forward to these days.
Be artificer, attune to all of them, get true polymorphed into maralith=become death destroyer of memes.
I have a different interpretation of the one that desires "a fair share of treasure in return". I think that means that since the character is a leader, makes decisions in battle, etc - it is only fair that they get a larger share of treasure than others. The "in return" is important - in payment for their leadership they get more in return.
As someone with a LE Dragonborn Conquest Paladin of Tiamat in the backlog of Characters, Will of the Talon sounds like the perfect weapon for him
Favorite response to the minor detrimental property of being blinded while more than 10' apart: "it's my seeing eye... sword."
I'm curious as to if good characters can attune, even though I haven't watched the video yet
None of them are restricted by alignment, so there doesn't seem to be a reason why.
If anything I'd say the most interesting stories could come from a good character attuning to one not knowing what they are
I love that you made the Uk'otoa echo lol
Hey, you shaved! Looking good, Ted! All of the Wildemount stuff you've done is excellent thus far.
Yeah, I debated doing a quarantine beard and just letting it grow the whole time. But I decided instead, I'm going to go the other way and try to get in shape over the quarantine. And start with a little grooming
I agree with your assessment of the lash of shadows and having snake heads, This is an example of homebrewing fitting the weapon better as I created a dormant, awakened, and an exalted version of each. Dormant I erased 3 heads from the image, giving it just 2, then only 3 heads in awakened and finally only 4 in exalted.
The vestiges of divergence and the arms of the betrayers remind me very much of the codices in Strongholds and Followers, in that they cause individual players to have seriously overpowered items which can warp the expected capacity of the player. And they provide so much possibility for story. Check out the codices from Matt Colville if you can, they’re worth a look.
Have you ever thought about revisiting the unofficial Tal’Dorei campaign book?
Yup, I will be
16:35 great mace
I made a bunch of homebrew magical whips! I will be adding a 5th poison for the whip if I use it. Fun video thanks!
I really appreciate hour coverage brother. Thank you and keep up the good work ✊
The talking dagger, the blade of broken mirrors, reminds me of rubilax from wakfu. Sorry please tell me I'm wrong.
Finally, someone who both plays dnd and watches Wakfu!!!!!
Curious, if I could borrow your expertise in Arcana? I have a player who's spell casting focus is a crystal ball, even though he has multiple staffs he prefers his crystal ball.. Are there any crystal balls in dnd lore that have perks? Looking for an item to award. Thank you for any help.
There are the literal dnd Crystal Balls, there are 3 variations
2 things.
1st: None of the arms are true ranged weapons and 5e lacks magic ranged weapons.
2nd: All the beings in the weapons are pretty powerful. I would have wished they would have added some fluff that enables them as hexblade / infernal patrons. Maybe with the weapon giving some new spelloptions to the hexblade warlock.
The "Lesser Idols" section of the book details the Arms as Hexblade or Fiend Warlock patrons as well as Death or War Cleric options
@@brayne6231 oh? Then the book moved up a lot on my "D&D stuff i need to buy" list
Wouldn't it be more thematic for the Will of the Talon to have a Red Abishai in it instead of a bone devil.
Any Abishai really
@@NerdImmersion 5 of them, constantly arguing and bickering over the right type of action to take, softly forcing the player to be more tyrannical and iron handed.
It really got me thinking that how powerful is Uk’ota that he can manage to destroy an arm of a betrayer.
Probably about as strong as tiamat's blood or an ancient red dragon it seems
I really like Tiamat. There’s a lot of potential that was sort of wasted in that one module... but the Will of the Talon and the Wreathe of he Prism could be the crux of an adventure set around Tiamat’s cult. Maybe the players have to use the Wreathe against the cult to stop some powerful adult dragon, or the Will of the Talon is the only weapon that can kill a powerful demon summoned by Tiamat’s followers that’s threatening the player’s home base.
You had me at snake headed whip
Fjord’s sword from the wild other I believe is a vestige
Stormrazer is 100% a vestige. The Sword of Fathoms is way closer to a Betrayer weapon, though I don't think it was.
@@agent00puffball it depends on definitions, and presumably if Matt will have either one evolve. Because if vestige/arm only relates to the calamity, then maybe not. but if it's just a weapon created by a god or for a god or whatever, I'd argue that they both fit that criteria. Even if uk'otoa isn't technically a "god" there's evidence that worship might be connected to attaining godly powers and uk'otoa is undoubtedly worshipped.
Neat but besides the mace the other ones can't really influence your players to become evil. They also can't really end Attunement by themselves so they're just really weapons with some attitude.
Decoby Jones The dagger is perfect for influencing someone so that they become evil. It uses your own values against you in order to do so.
@@justincaviness your right must have skipped it during my first watch through.
I can see people attempting to banish the devils and demons out of the weapons, while keeping at least some of the magical properties of the weapons
I presented the idea of a ritual to banish the fiend from the weapon in exchange for bonding their own soul to the weapon, becoming the new mind in the weapon upon death
honestly Grumsh's spear is super cool
Sounds like good patrons for a Hexblade Warlock
definitely
This is an old video but I agree with the snake head whip. Whips have always been a really bad weapon to use in general because of how low the damage die is, and pairing that whip with poison damage (the most often resistant/immune damage) and tying it to a con save (the worst save to target) makes it the worse item on the list in my opinion. If it did at least an additional d4 per head it would be a little better.
Blade of broken mirrors seems like weapon for a college of whisper bard
I get around the issue of there not being enough. or any, magic weapons of a certain type by just ignoring the weapon type of any printed magic item. I am particularly fond of the idea for a whip of disruption, vorpal sickle, or light hammer of striking.
Yeah, it's always just a bummer. Whip of Disruption is how I made my Castlevania Vampire Killer Whip
I like to sometimes tack on variants of spelleffects and UA abilities that didnt make it into the game.
My last tired artifact weapon (for a barbarian) was actualy an dwarven axe that did additional thunderdamage and added a bit of walkingspeed.
It could inflict Silence on a targed on the 3rd stage if you had hit.
My favourite is the Bloody End, just cos Bane is my favourite Betrayer God, although Asmodeus comes a close second.
I've a small question here... would an Identify spell tell everything about these 'vestiges of divergence/arms of the betrayers'? would only reveal the properties of the first state? would it reveal the 'downsides' or are considered curses? would it tell the caster how to unlock the new states?
One of things depending on the DM; a similar situation happened in critical role season 2 with the wizard character Caleb and his use of Identify. The DM said Identify is a low level spell so dont expect it to tell you everything! About an higher rarity item
Evil campaign starting at level 7 with one of these each lol
I mean, we're about to hit level 7 in the Evil Campaign I'm playing in, so I wouldn't mind having one
Craven's Edge was a sentiment weapon that Grog wielded, Were it was not a full example it had an awaken state when it was slated with enough blood
Yasha needs the spear and Stormgirdle.
Sapient not sentient. How come no one gets the difference. Sentient means "feeling" as in can experience pain and pleasure. Sapient means capable of complex "thinking" are self aware.
Humans are both.
Animals are sentient but not sapient.
The arms of the Betrayers can think for themselves but not feel anything, therefore they are sapient but not sentient.
Or do I miss understand this. Do they just feel but not think? Like a dog trained to fight and kill, but as a weapon?
i love rulns Wake
I hope your son is doing well and gets better soon! Also Thanks for all uploads, they've genuinely helped me decided whether to buy the book or not
yeah he's doing much better now!
I'm wondering if the Wreath of the Prism is actually meant for Bahamut
Nah, its kinda fitting since Bahamut always was a stickler (and only saw magic items as a tool to purge evil), Hlals item would be a prank and Null probably hands out non-orcus related dracolichdom to those worthy instead of a item. And because she is the one dragon to not have the main "mooks" of her forces be actual dragons in most cases.
I’m sad there are none for magic users.
Me too but can you really get something better than a staff of Magi
There's some elsewhere in the book
There's cool stuff in the vestiges. Armour for druids/anyone that uses polymorph or a shape change. A tome for wizards. But I don't see why you couldn't take the vestiges from the other book + the vestiges and the arms from here and then kinda Frankenstein your own based on them/other magic items or artifacts.
I'm also a fan of looking over the spells, feats, and class features and adding them to items or amplifying them to some extent. Mat Colville's Fortresses and strongholds book has some ideas for improving class features that can be interesting.
Bloody end would be perfect for a conquest paladin both mechanically and flavour wise
Yeah man. If I just re-skin it as a flail instead of a morningstar it is perfect for one of my NPCs.
I do wish they would have made more weapon vestiges or at least try to rework/reword the original vestiges. I also like you love whips and have created some college magical whips that pump up the damage.
The old vestiges live in publishing hell unfortunately, so they won't be reprinted anytime soon
Didn’t they change the whips used by priestesses of Lolth into tentacles instead of snakes? I mean, flavor however you want, I’m just wondering.
Wouldn't destroying them result in the fiends release and therefore be a goal of said fiends? 🤔
I think the fiends go back to the plane their from; and I think they'd rather be on the material plane so they can mess with humans
I think it's a bit of a bummer that the Arms of the Betrayers don't have any spellcaster weapons.
So in these type of videos are you going over every magic item or are there more you're leaving out
In this video I went over every Arm of the Betrayer. Just like I went over ever Vestige in the Vestige video and every other magic item in the magic item video. The only time something would have been left out is if it was buried somewhere in the rest of the book and not listed in the Wildemount Treasure section.
@@NerdImmersion Ok cool I was just wondering, love your videos by the way keep it up man.
Why did they give the Blade of Broken Mirrors, a weapon perfect for Assassins, a personality that completely hates sneaking around, slowly killing enemies? It would be comedic the first time, but when you have to loudly argue with your dagger every time you are trying to patiently wait for the perfect time to strike, it would get pretty old.
Maybe strike up a deal with the dagger a situation where u can get your sneaky kills and it can get what it wants so it can b quit while u stabby stab
