The Heroic Chronicle is such a godsend for me, I'm not good with coming up with backstories in a vacuum, so having all this information as a launching pad is so helpful.
Even if the parents are dead, I don't see any reason not to roll, for past relationships. It's not like once someone is dead your previous memories of them get wiped from existence. Build a past for the character and have their relation with their dead parents be a potential driving force, or at least let it have some form of impact on the character, not to mention you rolled, that 1 parent left, could it be that the parent was assumed to be dead, but never confirmed dead?
Yeah, the only reason to not is if you were literally a from-birth orphan (father left, mother died in childbirth?) or they both died shortly after so you have no memories of them at all
@@valasafantastic1055 I genuinly don't have enough lore knowledge, nor do I want to take time away from studying, to read up, on the entire sword coast, and regional cuisine ++. I'll probably dedicate a bit of time to compare the xanathar's section with the heroic chronicle and make a combined system, best of both worlds kinda thing for a template, but more than that would have to wait until uni is over.
Heroic chronicle not only helps the players in the character creation, but also gives the DM a huge crutch, because he can personalize the story so much that the characters feel and enjoy the sessions better - this is a real win-win situation!
I’m going to come up with a Fateful Moment for every feat in the game. Then at the start of my next campaign I’m having all of my players roll their Heroic Chronicles. We’ll do it one at a time during session zero and the first session will be fate drawing the PCs together.
My rogue was like: "Fuck you mom, you never told me I was a Changeling and when I accidentally morphed from a human to a changeling in my puberty, you pretended you wouldn't know me. So I'm leaving you."
@@MP-in3yn They don't even need the klepto quirk. People seem the think that rogues have to steal stuff, but they really don't. You could have a really bubbly, nice and upstanding citizen who used to play hide and seek, then they got real good at it. Heck, go swashbuckler and then you can just flavor it as you being disarmingly charming in combat. No need to include abligatory "Oh but they're a rogue so they gotta steal stuff".
I want one of these made for every setting in D&D at the moment. I feel like it wouldn't be hard for the DM to work with characters who don't roll fateful moments to give them bonuses of a similar level to keep everyone happy.
I would give every player a fateful moment, and also make it to where everyone can only get 1. This way everyone gets to have a cool thing in their backstory. Plus we play heroes on a basic narrative level, and every heroes journey has some call to adventure, or faithful moment.
Enjoy your work. Also, you can still have either siblings or parents still be a result. Just need them to make up thier family that was "killed" and this surprise them with someone is actually alive.
I really like it. I usually have no problem making an interesting backstory but some of the people I dm for definitely aren’t big on the backstory. This would be an interesting why to hopefully get them a little bit more into character.
How I'd handle Fateful Moments, "If you do not get a fateful moment during character creation, you will get one during play before you reach 4th level." Then I would construct an FM based on their background and insert it as an event in the campaign.
I love the idea and concept of this system. I would absolutely use it Depending on what people got for a fateful moment, I might adjust things for those who didn't get one. Try and keep the group balanced.
Man I like your interpretation and comments on the book. I wonder though, doesn't people at D&D Beyond contact you about reading the whole book? Like, I exactly know all the subclasses, spells, items without spending any money on the book. Don't want you to get in trouble or something. If it's completely normal, then please keep doing these videos, they're great. Cheers!
I kind of thought this would be more of an expanded avernus group background thing, but it seems to be more like xanathar's. Not bad, cool details, but not what I was expecting.
Im gonna use this setting with a group of first timers. Also my first time DMing anything other than the starter set. How much info should i give players about the world? ( I dont think they want to use the chronicle)
I'd say give them as much as you feel comfortable giving. If you're familiar with the setting, try and put yourself in the character's shoes and think what they might reasonably now. There's also no reason you cant provide them additional info down the line. I'll also plug my Top 10 DM Tips video that came out before this one. Hopefully it helps too!
This is pretty cool. I like the idea of using it to make a villain. Also I have only been with the Chanel for a month or two so I’m not sure how the give aways work. Will the winners be announced in a video or does it come in an email?
Family members that are not parents or siblings. have you not heard of uncles and aunts ? XD the cultist statistics doesnt mean they are a cultist THEY CAN BE I think there is an irony that your good well act led a person to a life of crime and how you would react to that. You should have met your birth parents ... well maybe thats a twist for your charcter ... you were adopted ! if I roll I would always make the roll have a place.
You ended up the worse place since Rexentrum is the capital of evil in Wildmount. 2 new campaign but sadly doesn't know enough about Wildmount to put them in action.
I don't know if I'd go so far as to call it the capital of evil. There are some sketchy folks there sure, but theres always sketchy people in a massive city with a lot power and nobility
Dead parent's, cannot be met, really? Ghosts, portals to afterlife, magic jar. No siblings, Adoption!, or organization type siblings. The dead can't be helpful ally, you find their graves and receive needed item, that which seems impossible just needs some imagination to make it happen, it doesn't even require magic to be a source.
How do people have 2 to 4 hour sessions? My sessions go for 6 to 12 hours and my players barely get anything done. Dont get me wrong, Both me and they love it or we wouldnt be playing for 12 hrs, but I just dont understan how anyone would get anything done in a 2 hour session. To be fair it could be that my players are a bit on the Newer side so combat can get slow if they need to look up a spell, etc. But its not often and its not so bad that it feel like it stopped the game
You really have to design your games to be shorter and snappier, or ensure that your characters journal well. Also, the DM has to enforce some tabletop control with turn decision time limits and such things.
I used to do 6-12 hour weekend sessions with my friends, but we'd make a weekend out of it. That was also before all of us had kids. If you're playing every week you can do a lot in 2-4 hours

I'm just going to wait for someone to make an extended version. for the sword coast.

I agree, this system would be great to adapt for your own settings as well as for using it in a Wildemount campaign.
How to pronounce Wynandir: “why-nan-deer”.
I’m surprised people have trouble with that one.

You can definitely see elements of the Mighty Nein's backstory in these.

Family ally could be a cousin, aunt or uncle, not necessary a parent of sibling
