How do I continue watching this review when you're comparing batman style combat to dark souls...
As someone who liked the Witcher 3 I have to thank you Mack for telling it like it is. I feel like my eyes roll out of my sockets everytime someone blathers on about how complex and strategic Dark Souls or W3's combat is when it just isn't. You hit a button to dodge out of the way, you hit a button to hit something. It can be fun, and it can be rewarding but it isn't this insane top tier combat system. Just isn't. Anyone who says otherwise is just lying to themselves.
Hey Mack, could you name a few games with actual combat mechanics? I would really enjoy playing something that requires skill or at least some thought.
Ninja Gaiden Sigma/Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2/Ninja Gaiden Razors Edge. No game comes close to the combat system of these three, the only one that could come close is the Devil May Cry games.

the closest thing i found with combat that actually requires skill its an mmo, blade and soul. ofc i am sure there are more, like maybe the boss only focus games,but i would recommend blade and soul, focused around combat mechanics. sry i know i am not Mack, but i struggle finding a good game with combat mechanics too, especially rpg. now that i think abut, kingdoms of alamur have actual combat mechanics, but blade and soul is maybe the closes i could find. if someone can recommend me some games with combat mechanics, idm eather
I think during the TW3 worthabuy or his 'after the shitstorm explanation vid' he said that in skyrim you actually need to defend and aim to hit your target, and I guess because it's first person and no auto lock he also likes that when you swing you don't swing immediately at enemies you shouldn't be able to see (because it's first person ofc). And then he showed us how bad TW3 combat was by fighting the most basic enemy in the game... And here he is again calling the combat system dumbed down and made for noobs, sigh.

Yup, this game was on my watch list...then it came out and I was disappointed at how bland it was, so glad I didn't buy it.

The Gombie I watched a few lets plays on this game that's why it sat in my wishlist for so long before I formed an informed choice.
Because you don't like the games doesn't mean it's bad. I would never rely on a youtuber rant to decide if a game is good or not. Saying that the game does not worth that price is a thing, saying it's awful is another.

I do wonder why he keeps testing games he knows he will not like ? Let me answer that: to keep the rant on and satisfy his viewers. That sucks when you're at that point.
Game is good, finished it a few days ago. Just make sure to focus on no more than 2 skill trees if you want combat to be fun. Good storyline, complex systems of combat, skill and basic crafting which all tie together, nice companion arcs. It's not polished like a 60$ game, but thats ok, because it's not a 60$ game. Also, it seems from his review footage that he hasn't finished the first act- the first act is the worst part of the game. Get to the second act and it's fantastic. It's not for everyone, but it's a great game.

I am not 100% sure, but I think Mack does not review early access games. But Im totally agree with you - Exanima is a gulp of fresh air in the industry. I just wish they had more frequent updates! :)
Bare Meetle are a small team and they are trying to pay attention for every little detail they can, hence the low frequency of the updates. Their dream is Sui Generis and they genuinely care about it. First person sight cannot work in Exanima because it was never designed for that in the first place. The current camera+controls setup offers far greater freedom of movement and awareness than a first person control scheme can achieve.
As soon as he said it's witcher 3, dark souls etc. I downloaded it :) it's gonna be a good game then.

I can agree to an extent about the Witcher 3 combat, but not Dark Souls. Anyone who thinks all you do in Dark Souls is roll about and spam the attack buttons is a fucking idiot. Dark Souls has the best combat pretty much of any game, ever. Just a question of knowing how to actually play it and use it. You cannot spam your way through Dark Souls. Mack is shit at Dark Souls and never mastered it but rather chose to bracket in with massively inferior games because he is crap at it and doesn't have the patience for it.
The free game called "Riders of Icarus" is 10000 times more worth the time than this, that is a game that actually could've cost 35 pounds.. Honestly, it is early beta, and it's the best MMORPG that has ever hit, and it deserves to be more known that it is.. do a review on that, you will not regret ^^
A game in the same genre as other games is not a bad thing as long as its executed well. (Not saying this is) The problem with new kinds of games is you end up with shit like you had on the original Wii, or this new VR crap. They're just gimmicky crap. Most indie games aren't great either. I was sick of Subnautica within three days and I loved the concept of that game.
I think the bottom line is that once you've been gaming for a couple decades it loses a lot of its magic. Kind of like sex, drugs, food, and anything else you care to name. It's the Law of Diminishing Returns.

I think the combat in the Witcher 3 is pretty good. When using all the signs together with positioning and a higher difficulty level is pretty sweet with no spamming. It would be nice if CDPR could add a first person camera option to the mix for a laugh, that would be cool. Anyway this game he's playing here looks proper rife.

I loved the other games by Spider, sure not perfect by any means and the combat can be very frustrating, very good in the RPG department tho, i would surely get this when the price settles down.

I've never understood your hate of W3, but I get it with this. Witcher 3 just isn't about the combat, I agree on that much, but when I played W3 I hadn't really been totally immersed in these games yet. It didn't seem fresh to me but it didn't seem old either, so to me the W3 was a perfect game. The thing is that W3 wasn't trying to take any chances or do anything new. They were trying to make something that'll be remembered as a classic from this era of RPGs, and it will be. Technomancer though... it's as if Spiders thought they could do that as well as CDProjectRed when there's absolutely no way they could. W3 sets too high a standard in terms of creating an immersive RPG.
The thing is, I like my games being games, not movies.
CaesarGamer I mean it's not a movie and you couldn't get the same experience with a movie. It's not as if the combat is bad anyway, it's just not super original. Having a good story, good voice acting, an immersive world, etc. are all things that don't in any way negate it being a game.

No way.. the combat was pretty good. with tight ontrols, use of signs and knowing the strengths and weaknesses of your enemies and using it to your advantage etc....if it was easy for mack, he should have played it on hard or deathmarch... and i played it on kb&m and i think it works perfectly....

Can't comment on Dark Souls, it's not my cup of tea. But Witcher? Where to start with that game...great lore, story, characters...absolutely awful controls and combat, plus it has a zoned world with markers all on the half a dozen maps telling you what and where to explore. It's overrated for the amount of praise it gets.

Mac I love you, but playing Witcher 3 on Deathmarch difficulty is not skill-less, I can tell you that right now. If you're playing on easy, sure, not much involved in a lot of spots until you get later in the game. Playing on the highest difficulty, you really have to utilize your resources and the right swordplay to do the job. Normal mode today is like easy mode back in our day. You have to play on a hard setting to the get the real experience.
I've been following you for over a year. Love your vids and your humor. But as someone who platinumed Witcher, you can't just spam in that game, it doesn't work man. It just doesn't. Batman I can understand, but The Witcher you can't.
I agree with you on a lot of AAA titles. Lot of the same shit. Some of that same shit is good, but much of it is wank, as you say ;) But again, with a game like The witcher, at least in the over 100 hrs. I played, the only way spamming would have worked is playing in the early game, on easy. As you progress there are just too many enemies that have varied defenses and attacks to spam anything at all.
I liked Witcher for the story, and the cool finishing moves when he takes a guy's head off. That was great. The story was really powerful at times.
Anyway, aside from that, yeah, this game looks farking trash. (rings bell)

Oh man, I love rolling mechanics. put rolling in your game and instantly even checkers becomes an action game. I cant wait for Elder scrolls 6, but if it doesnt have rolling in it, im not playing it. Unless of course it has 3rd person cover.
You can't compare games because they dodge and spam attacks, that dosen't make it the same game.

Game play totally reviewed spot on and for the love of God they need visible damage instead of life bars over their heads.. next Gen should give you more immersion, yet here we are with the same old same.. spot on man.. spot F'ing on!

The story is fun, only one reviewer I have seen actually played the game enough to get their rover and leave Ophir. (First city) game is reminiscent of kotor, combat is what it is, and it's actually fun. If you button smash you'll get smacked in the head and die (enemies hit hard) you don't get a cheese counter attack like you do in arkham games, you have to watch your surrounding and enemies to dodge them. Also they don't wait one by one to attack, you can get attacked any time, even in the middle of your own attack. However again, the story and rng elements are great fun. I'm having a blast. A shame many are missing out,

Yeah, saw his review of both cons and pros, voice acting and music is certainly much better than the last game, Mars War Logs or something, skill tree is interesting where you can go with hybrid builds and such. I do agree its a bit dull but it has its ups and downs, Ill wait till it goes on sale later this year on steam, I just don't think $47.94 cad is worth the price tag right now

Back in the 80's there may have been less innovation but that was brought on by the technology at the time, and we got some great games then and through the 90's and so on, however with the current level of technology being as it is today, there really is no excuse for piss poor games , regardless of your system of choice

Excellent. There's so many reasons for it though. I have been calling the whole decade of gaming battered cod. Because thats all it is. My engine can look grittier than yours and look how much people love the gritty CoD. Most indies are shite, just as many mobile games are shite but they gave a massive kick in the arse to "lets make it look more gritty, batter the CoD look more!" We are all done. I think even cod developers are too.

make sure to get dark arisen for dogma if youre on console. It makes it a little more casual which you will appreciate as a first timer to rpgs
Morrowind! If you can handle the somewhat dated combat, it is ridiculously good. Skyrim is a decent second. Final Fantasy X is a decent JRPG as well (turn based)

Played this game, tried to convince myself it was decent, my character was already level 40 agi+techno type (EXTREME difficulty), I spent hours grinding. Combat is highly repetitive, graphics are gorgeous in some maps but looks outdated in other levels, the one thing positive about this game were the lightings.
NPC models look generic, same with the structures, objects and level of details, not much graphics options to remedy that.
What I hate most about this game is the amount of items that you get. I spent almost 74 hours leveling up and I still had the same generic looking equipment and weapons (tanto, machete, sickle mace, etc.), its plain boring. Crafting does not remove the lack of variety in weapons, in fact you wont really feel any improvement in your gear.
Main story and the sidequests are dull and uninteresting and incredibly slow, it seemed that the writers wanted to create a "Jedi-Council" type of organization with the technomancers but its just unappealing. Not worthy of a AAA price.

"Arkham" combat isn't the worst thing, but any game developer that uses it should really, really commit to making something else memorable. Like the visuals, the story, character interaction, or whatever. This game looks passable but mediocre and forgettable, if someone stuck footage of this next to six other sci-fi third-person action RPGs you'd be forgiven for not knowing which one is "The Technomancer."
As this point, if a game doesn't have a combat system like Chivalry or at LEAST Mount and Blade, I'm just not interested. The latest from Batman broke me.

Mack!! wait, you have to think of the Gaming industry as an industry populated just like any other industry with developers that do there job only for the money, from 9 to 5, with absolutely no passion or connection and they don't give a damn about the final result, because guess what: It isn't the programmers job to make the game good, he just does what he's payed to do, it's not the artist job to make the game good... everyone does what he is told and payed to do and nothing else, because there is 0 (zero) passion left in the industry. Every CEO out there only thinks of the numbers and the helicopter view and they put out a lot of pressure on those in charge of managing the development, resulting in development planing cut in half (=> DLCs), poor quality (games with bugs after launch), heavy use and reuse of standard game engines (rinse and repeat), plus the developers that spend half the day scanning for the next job he can land for more money and the other half browsing Facebook and online shops for stuff and the next vacation.
I'm also tired of this same combat in every single game. Of all the Batmans, Dark Souls, Witchers, Mad Maxes, Assasins Creeds and Shadow of Mordors. Good thing we have Mack, who will never recommend a game if it has this type of shitty combat.
I swear to whatever god you have, if cyberpunk 2077 will look anything near the witcher3 or this game, seriously i'm going to fly to poland and invade it again by myself. Fuckin' hell we can't have a nice sci-fi first person game ain't we. fuck's sake.

you generalize 3rd person melee combat mechanics too much; it's like saying all collectible card games are the same because you have a deck and play them with different effects... Dark Souls combat is a version of 3rd person melee combat and it's probably one of the best. Spamming and dodging is Dark Souls for some enemies but there is also parrying, backstabbing, ripostes, guard breaks, etc. It's not even really spamming because if you just kept spamming you'd be punished by many creatures and especially in pvp.
So i was thinking about buying this game. Spiders games never had good combat. I remember when i bought mars war logs, combat sucked, but the settings were nice, bound by flame, setting was also nice, but combat was even worse. Have they improved it compared to bound by flame ? Witcher 3 definitely not a spam-fest. Been that way since the first game. Maybe you can get away with that on lower and normal difficulty, but certainly not on the harder difficulty. You have three basic defense mechanics as well; rolling, evading and blocking with three separate control for each. Tell me, how many "meats" do you need for that purpose alone?

You always bash The Witcher 3 (and I see why) but the game isn't focused around combat (unlike some DS bs) but the story and in an RPG aspect it's one of my favourite games.
When I played it for the first time I didn't even care about combat, for the second time I noticed it since I partly knew what was going to happen in some missions so I installed a console mod and made myself one shot enemies.
I finished it the 2nd time and a lot of stuff was diffrent, pretty sure I could also play it the 3rd time and not get bored.
When you say something about any game take into consideration what that game was trying to accomplish (in TW3 case it was the story, not combat), thanks.

I'm actually a major sucker for all and everything that calls itself an "RPG" so i usually buy most of these titles despite the reviews. But i have to agree this is just a shell of a game. It copied all of these ideas from games that already exist and even executed them fairly ok. The graphics are fairly ok. The story is fairly ok. So if the developers were aiming for fairly ok then really well done!
However all of these copied themes and ideas somehow fail to make the game enjoyable. When i first saw all of these skill trees etc i lost my shit and was ready to pay 60 bucks for this game. When i finally got my hands on it i noticed that all of these lvl ups don't rly bring anything to the table but the occassional talent upgrades that let u pick higher lvl locks etc. You still do the same stuff in combat and it just gets dull.
I actually liked witcher 3 even tho the combat leaves a lot to be desired. That said i even think Technomancer's combat system is better than Witcher's bcuz it just has more to offer. Witcher has some signs and a spin attack. Technomancer has 3 different stances, different weapons than just 2 swords and some magic based on electricity. But in all honestly that still doesn't make the game good. It just lacks too much in every area to be overall a decent title. Empty, dead surroundings made me feel like im playing a Fallout game, minus everything great about it.
You missed a few "fuck"´s to peep out :D Anyway yeah this game is only worth 9,99 $ and that would be almost to much think. Thanks for the review.
One more thing, pls grab a controller and try out dark souls again, and i mean play it through.
It takes me 3 or 4 times, i Alt+F4 the game cause the bad port and no story. but then i get into it and i play the shit out of this game , round about 500 hours. So a game , it doesnt matter how shitty it is, when it entertain me for so long , it is worth a buy , I think.

it's definitely not Dark Souls. Dark souls games are deep and rich with lore and mystery. I've played about 2 hours of the Witcher 3 and completely agreed with your review on that game but I wouldn't mention that game or this game in the same conversation as DS.

I don't know how they managed to make a one button spamming game that's also so incredibly clunky. I've found it incredibly easy but it feels like I'm playing a guy whose playing the game. I push up and then the guy playing it pushes up and then the character moves. And he turns and handles like he's a role playing a mech from mech warrior. Oh and if you haven't gotten to the parts with the merchants yet, you have to go find this technomancer that's underground and bring him to a merchant you can rescue. Oh good lord I wish I could post the animation here for you so I you don't have to play the game because good fucking lord, the voice acting does not at all match the hilariously over-exaggerated animation. Its like it was designed by someone whose never had a conversation with a human being.
I actually thought this looked good from the trailer, obviously the actual gameplay isn't as appealing as the trailer is nowadays. Tbh, it reminds me of a shitty free to play game that I once played, no difference really haha. Great review as always Mack, keep them up.

I enjoy your videos but to describe Dark Souls' and The Witcher 3's gameplay as "roll around and spamming" is pretty dumb. Spamming will get you killed very quickly in those games, especially Dark Souls.
This game does look wank though.

I might not always agree with him, but he's relatively entertaining... however, the bell has passed it's best... you know that one video where you have the bell, and it's good... then you get other videos with the bell, and the knock-off episodes with the bell... and the bell-spamming has worn out it's welcome. I did beat Lords of the fallen , The surge then Nioh and since i ran out of souls like game options , tried this ...and rage quit unninstall like never before!

I seen a few clips of this game and figured it was garbage from the gameplay I seen. The guy rolls about that often it looks like his electricity has set him on fire and he is using the stop, drop and roll tactic to try and put it out. Another AAA game I shall give a miss.......right now im getting more joy from indie games rather than the big AAA ones.

I get the feeling that the developers bought the shell of dark souls or witchers from those developers and just added their own skins, maps, models and animations. slapped a huge AAA price on steam and there you go. EZ money
You absolutely cannot spam buttons in dark souls. That's the whole point. You even get punished for spamming in witcher. To a lesser extend.
Mack have you thought about recording a reusable voice over? You could then copy and paste it in the reviews of the copy and paste games.
The combat animations which are the whole core in any action rpg game, are extreme boring and slow paced + the particles also are dull as f... = Not worth a buy!

I have not played Technomancer and I don't intend to, but saying that all the games which have rolling and attacking are bad games is a wrong approach I think. Doom for example is only shoot shoot shoot and it's great.
