  • Tanglin Halt is one of the oldest HDB estates in Singapore and was first developed by the SIT, and subsequently by the HDB in the 1960s. It was one of the districts in the first satellite town, Queenstown, planned by the British. Almost all the blocks built by HDB during that period were ten storeys tall. Hence, Tanglin Halt estate was also known among the locals as chap lau (十楼; "ten storeys" in Hokkien). Its iconic 10-storey flats appeared on the nation's first-ever $1 note.
While change is inevitable, it's always a sad thing when you have to say goodbye to a place which holds many fond memories. I have many good childhood memories.
As part of the largest Selective En Bloc Redevelopment Scheme (SERS), 31 housing blocks of 3,480 HDB flats and 200 market stalls and shops will be demolished - representing the biggest "en-bloc" since 1999. The occupants will be moved to new flats in nearby Margaret Drive, Dawson Road and Strathmore Avenue. Demolition of Tanglin Halt starts in 2021.
This short aerial drone footage aims to capture this precious memory. The days we walked from church to the hawker center which is called "Square". Long gone were the days we heard the Kereta Api Tanah Melayu (Trains) roaring down the tracks behind. Memories come flooding in as I flew the drone overhead and retraced my old pathway.

Glad the video brought you fond memories. The rumble of trains and the horn - wow feels like yesterday. My relative stayed in block 65. Indeed time flies. Cheers.

I don't think the blocks are more than 99 years. So why is the government clearing it? Houseless singles and low income families can stay here as rental block.

The blocks are old and even with a recent upgrading, there is too much repairs needed on infrastructure, pipes and wiring. I am sure the Government have weighed their options.

    How to fly the drone?

It's quite easy to fly a drone these days. Get a reliable brand and model and it is very safe as long you adhere to safety procedures. Some pointers from Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) can be found here. www.caas.gov.sg/public-passengers/unmanned-aircraft
