Dear all comments, I am a Singaporean, This is not really true, firstly, Those students were given time even if they were late, as long as they made it before the exams ended Secondly, it’s not their fault. Trains DO BREAK DOWN. It Happens, don’t blame them. Thirdly, transport fees DO NOT increase a lot. Lastly, We should appreciate the hard work and effort the workers at SMRT has done, There have spent over 40+ hours just for us Singaporeans to use. By Today, The MRT of the affected areas has been resumed. Yes, only some areas have been affected, not every train track.
tbh, if you are those kids, with stress of being late, even time given it would be pointless as it affected their mind and ability to perform their best. Plus throughout the years, this MRT has always been breaking down on and off. Only large scale incidents are reported. Ive travelled and visited places where transport systems DO fail as well BUT not as common as ours. If you take the NS line then being stuck at yio chu kang is pretty common…
Engine Overwork, over load & stressed out train parts. These are the things seniors like me could apply to ourselves too. We are old & so are the MRT train. About time to consider "Supplements like COD fish oil, not sardines or mackerel".
Could it be sabotage. The authorities should do more surprise audit checks of the performance of the operations and technical team members. Lack of supervision on service technical team members?
We should not blame the parts that are subjected to wear and tear. SMRT is responsible to maintain or replace parts from time to time and not until it breaks down. It is their duty to do cnstant inspection, no excuse of overlooking a fault. Our transportation should be reliable for long term.
As and when they increased the public transport fare we accommodate. Also to highlight the train air conditioned is not being monintored, most time it is hot.
Age of the train should not have been a problem if a good culture of maintaining high maintenance standard exists within the organization. If a train is too old and no longer economical to maintain, the culture will pick that up. If a component is nearly its expiry date, the culture will pick that up. 😁😁
The typical of how Sg ministers do their duties, 1st priority-collect $$$ 1st, then 🙈🙉... 1st time in engineering field, i hear sg garment afraid of "over maintenance" 😅.... N then the SOP, there shud b independent auditors coming in on regular chks on these organisations....n oso chks on their financial chks...so as to justify for the passengers fares......n price hikes..... Mind u, these organisations r putting the passengers' lives at risk....by not having regular maintenance for 38 yrs....
This is the most severe train disruption on East West Line,I can’t believe that one of the train has been broken down and the other train has been derailed…
The new transport minister after Iswaran must bear responsibilities. A dud appointment. If the Singapore PM cannot find a real person to be a good minister, especially in transport, then Singapore is in clear present danger.
these are fake news. u really believe that? Singapore has top class metro system & failsafe. Someone is trying to keep people away from Singapore. I went there only once that too because I was under depression & had to take a break some place nearby. I didnt know people saw me & thought I should stay away or people like me! What would be the best way to keep us out? Cause fear. Trust me I for one will never step out again. But others might see this as real. Stop spreading fear because elites want to reserve these places for their kids holidaying & stays. I am sorry I went to their Singapore. Hope data I brought was enough for future business & your tiny little kids rocking the future. I thought they would butcher my mother alive or get us butchered somehow for using us for their pricier kids. Which they did. Only thing is we are not dead yet just filled with fear..
@@seabreeze667 do you know an American Degree at Bachelors is based on Credits. "A" levels subjects can be counted as credits to an American Bachelor. Next, an American Bachelors majoring in Engineering cannot qualify to be registered as an American Engineer. You need a American Masters Degree to register as an Engineer after lodging some years of Engineering Experience. Did you know a Bachelor's in Mathematics from Harvard University cannot entitle the graduate to pursue a Masters in Mathematics at Oxford University in England. The person need to do an extra year at Oxford undergraduate before been access for admission into Oxford Masters . American Bachelors are considered at Diploma level only. Some time back , there was an attempt by Singapore parties to hoodwink this minister's academics as doing a double degree during his single scholarship time in an American University. A total dud. Many can do the same. No big deal. It's all a credit system. His advantage is a primary degree in Engineering subjects credits ( especially in his final year) with economic credits added on. Technically, most Singapore "A" levels grad can do a American Bachelor in less than 2+ years. Throw in a few SATs before or during degree time, under 2 years may be possible. He will have some challenges if he was doing an economics bachelor trying to squeeze in an Engineering Bachelor. Ha ha. Trying to pull wool over normal Singaporean public on how great his academics were. Next. He did not show any special calibre in personal powerless outside this academic boast attempt. Failures in his Transport Minister's office. Direct failures in holding on to his main job. That's why he needed to spin himself as something great . He is actually much worse in job capabilities than Iswaran.
I know the situation feels overwhelming now..but be rest assured , this issue can be handled over time and careful planning. It may require some adjustment , we have faced challenges before and come out stronger. Stay calm, keep perspective ,and approach this step by step. It’s something we can overcome together! MAJULLAH SINGAPURA!
About 40 years ago, someone say that Singapore is going to be a Swiss Standard of living and today, we still see the subway keep breaking down frequently.
You know why? That is because Iswaran was the Tramsport mininster between 2021 to 2024 what to expect from a corrupt minster in charge of transport...major reason for the breakdown 😂😂😂
We are fast moving back to 3rd world transportation system. This is the result of over confidence and refusal to listen to public feedback thinking they know better.😮

From the disasterous responses to the MRT breakdown, it would seem that contingency plans were not conclusive enough nor flexible enough to meet evidences. Better planning and plans are needed, to support the MRT with the public Transport station.
How can this be? This team was selected after w worldwide search for the best talent to ensure we have a world class subway system. It must be a fault of nature. No other explanation will suffice.
Singapore started their MRT services on 1988, which is 36 years already. I am not sure whether do they retired the old ones which is beyond of use. Or, is this merely the maintenance issues?
Most of the expensive upgrade money was probably siphoned into the pockets of the contractors before being used to pay for better quality material and competent engineers.
Our SMRT trains runs very nosily , lots of squeezing sound (Rolls Side Rubbing The Tracks ) and knocking sound seems the joining/connecting track are not properly level and LTA say is within LTA decibel unlike those old trains I rode in Germany , they runs very quiet and cooling . Even the Circle Line the joining panels of trains produced high pitch squeezing sound . The question is does SMRT has competent technical staffs who does daily QC check before sending them into operation?
Over the next twenty years, upgrade EW and NS MRT line all stations underground. This will not only increase the reliability of MRT system, but also release tremendous land above。
Let Air Reistration Board surveyors run MRT as per aviation standard & there WILL BE NO MORE BREAKDOWNS in future. How often you hear of aircraft breakdowns due to NO MAINTENANCE
The question now arise. Should a similar circumstance happens on the RTS, what would be the contingency plan? I hope that the authority would look into it.
One solution is for the Singapore Government to interview all former staff of MRT corporation. They would be more open to tell the shortcomings of the organisation which present day staff dare not say so for fear of repercussions.
In conclusion, I am never using mrt trains unless it’s necessary. I’m most likely using buses 😊 and plus, at least the accident doesn’t seems to be very serious because I remember watching a MRT train accident in another country and many people died 😢
On one end you hear that large amount of investments were spent on upgrades; at the other end you read that the former Transport Minister was first charged for corruption then dropped to lesser charges. And then now you witness the worst ever MRT disruptions.
One of the problem is on the cost savings/cost avoidance measures the management put in. Public transport must be operated at the highest integrity, safety and not only to meet their share holder's profit expectation. No shortcuts for a national infrastructure.
A lot of questions. Why still using the 37 years old mrt? Track use for how long already? Do you have regular checks and replacements? Is the train, especially the older train, able to hold the overload capacity? I never heard the minister ever say how this issue is going to be ensured. PM, MOT, neither have ever talked about it, do they? They only know to say we need to work together, our road will be better. Now, the mrt route is under service. I think Prime minister just rode the mrt. Should he express to us how he feels? COME ON MAN, WORK TOGETHER MAH? So is it wayang for GE?
Many hours are lost and productivity too. Certainly this is not small matter. Before a big breakdown, there is always many small problems in the past. Where are we missing now?
The westies for the MRT line they deserved as PAP take their support as granted. They have only 1 line to the city. Look at the easties that PAP is eager to please, they have 3 duplicate MRT lines, any breakdown is no big deal
Is simply due to long overdue train replacement for 35 years old carriages. Contract of new train was awarded in 2018 but the trains are still not delivered and replaced after 6 years period. Why take so so long……
Cutting down on maintenance to cut costs has its consequences. Next watch out for the NE line. Of late the tracks from Serangoon MRT to Punggol MRT is causing a lot of violent side rocking jerks along parts of the said tracks. SAFETY vs COSTS CUTTING ??!
Nw Singapore population have lncrease to Double.. Cos many ,Expatriate,Foreign Worker,Student, are coming,Don blame Mrt,d problem is it Overcrowded n Overload, small country, have 5 Airport, more n more Train Lines, n Medical Ctr are lncreasing....Everything want Num.1....
Not just want no1, they want to rake in more money and hand down to their own family before they pass on. What other positions earn more than in the Gov? Bo liao wad.. if you are them youd do the same too right lol. Its normal.. we are all humans.
If coud work at home, stay at home for work. This will allow to reduce impact during incident like this. Bus could take a lot less people than train. Only people who need to be at work should work outside of home.
This just goes to show how fragile Singapore system really has become as private entities have become concerned with money instead of quality and reliability. But the fact remains there will be no accountability for this..fares will continue to rise as those at the top need to fatten their bank accounts for their new yachts or bungalows etc..even if someone did step down it would make no difference as they have already collected so much money for "past contributions" that even their grandchildren will live comfortably and fares will continue to rise and fatten the bank accounts of those who take over..it is just a vicious cycle and the losers will always be consumers who have very few options because owning a car and using taxis etc is also becoming more expensive..at the end of the day consumers are prisoners of a system in which the elites get richer with no accountability and consumers have no real options except to suck it up and endure whatever the elites toss at them
Perhaps such incidents would highlight why the aviation industry has such thorough processes and safety factors, and maybe SMRT should learn from them.
SMRT works for many years. 1 October SMRT come back to normal. Thanks SMART guys for your great efforts! 👏👏👏
This is not a train breakdown alone. It was compounded by negligence which could have been avoided. The aftermath is very telling.

Im also a Singaporean
Engine Overwork, over load & stressed out train parts. These are the things seniors like me could apply to ourselves too. We are old & so are the MRT train. About time to consider "Supplements like COD fish oil, not sardines or mackerel".
Could it be sabotage. The authorities should do more surprise audit checks of the performance of the operations and technical team members. Lack of supervision on service technical team members?
Ask China for help,,,China railroads technology is now world no.1.
So who sabotaged? Opposition party members? 😆
@@melvinchsomeone is taking nonsense.
Dude.....train tracks found rusty and cracks all whole..
The train that failed has been over 35 years old fyi
Agreed...!!!😬
We should not blame the parts that are subjected to wear and tear. SMRT is responsible to maintain or replace parts from time to time and not until it breaks down. It is their duty to do cnstant inspection, no excuse of overlooking a fault.
Our transportation should be reliable for long term.
Just an excuse
Jus put it simply....they r greedy...want ez $$$$$ but lazy to maintain....
Maintenance require constant documentation n reporting of faults etc, we used to have ISO standard requirements for engineering companies, where issit rn?
N then the SOP, there shud b independent auditors coming in on regular chks on these organisations....n oso chks on their financial chks...so as to justify for the passengers fares......n price hikes.....
Mind u, these organisations r putting the passengers' lives at risk....by not having regular maintenance for 38 yrs....
This is the most severe train disruption on East West Line,I can’t believe that one of the train has been broken down and the other train has been derailed…
Thank you
The new transport minister after Iswaran must bear responsibilities.
Only thing is we are not dead yet just filled with fear..
sg is all going down longkang, there's no future here
Former transport minister busy with his alleged corruption trial, current transport minister give us this!! What are overpriced ministers for??
He is actually much worse in job capabilities than Iswaran.
the rot from within is showing
If this happened on a high speed train, the casualties would be huge!
Singapore is so pack it like sardine. Oh no…
@paris5950: Indeed Singapore shouldn't have more than 3 millions peoples!!
Now, How to Solve the Population Problem???
I know the situation feels overwhelming now..but be rest assured , this issue can be handled over time and careful planning.
It may require some adjustment , we have faced challenges before and come out stronger.
Stay calm, keep perspective ,and approach this step by step.
It’s something we can overcome together!
MAJULLAH SINGAPURA!
EWL breakdown. show MRT and it's rail line maybe comes of age and need replacement
True. Never knew Singapore would do anything like that
When a singular party runs the country it’s very predictable
@@leocitywrestling7029this is what happens when a single party remains in power for too long. They get comfortable and arrogant
@@NookTommy The Transport Minister already apologised so they are not arrogant.
👿👿
If any of you ever been on trains overseas, they feel very different from the trains in Sg.
Reading the comments, why are many blaming the Transport Minister and not the SMRT CEO? 🤔 $1.7M annual salary right? Meanwhile how much do the average SMRT operation and maintenance workers earn?
Added stress for those children having a critical exams.
Bottom line is inadequate maintenance. What solid plans has smrt cone out to prevent this repeated occurrence?
Constant quality check is so important
Where are all the Ministers and MPs, shouldn't they be picking up the students to their exam?? 😂😂
$5.4M fine? SMRT: "No problem, we will just increase the fare!"
Are the disruptions in MRT train service getting too frequent for comfort? Let us know in the comments below!

Yes
It’s gonna exponentially compound
Either the Minister of Transport/CEO resigns or lower their transport fares then the people will see that as a sincere apology. If not it is just a PR stunt and Wayang to smoke out of their problems...
Maybe having a fleet of buses and taxis on standby always to be used for this situations will be good.
Singapore invests so much of its budget to make its airport gain international attention, making them forget about other types of transportation.
LTA just launched a $900 million programme to improve bus services, what are you talking about 😆

@@JustCasual can’t forget the new gen trains, the BSEP, the BCM, the 11-year upgrade to NSEWL…
u saying they don’t do enough?
From the disasterous responses to the MRT breakdown, it would seem that contingency plans were not conclusive enough nor flexible enough to meet evidences.
Better planning and plans are needed, to support the MRT with the public Transport station.
And to top it all it happened right as the PSLE started!!
Ask China for help..china railroads technology is no,one in the world.
Well, we have mini-stars running companies that take on government projects you know? 😝
@@melvinch "mini-stars"... more like lackeys who are retired from their original posts.

Just look around all the first world metro systems.
Tokyo, New York, ShangHai, London, HK......
Which one of them breakdowns this much
There is a big problem with maintenance. Failure will occur if maintenance is not done properly.
Over the next twenty years, upgrade EW and NS MRT line all stations underground. This will not only increase the reliability of MRT system, but also release tremendous land above。
That would be tremendously useless
Let Air Reistration Board surveyors run MRT as per aviation standard & there WILL BE NO MORE BREAKDOWNS in future. How often you hear of aircraft breakdowns due to NO MAINTENANCE
Ask 3500 HNI coming every year to invest in Singapore Infrastructure...
I live in HK and I like the Singapore MRT. Very good system and very nice stations
I’m most likely using buses 😊 and plus, at least the accident doesn’t seems to be very serious because I remember watching a MRT train accident in another country and many people died 😢
please don’t, youre going to make buses that are already crowded (before any disruption), even more crowded
@@WLTransit100 I’m just one person tho-
If bus break down just need to get off the bus, walk to nearest bus stop and wait for another one. no need to stroll along train tracks.
Authoritative regimes never last. We are beginning to see the downfall of PAPism.
On one end you hear that large amount of investments were spent on upgrades; at the other end you read that the former Transport Minister was first charged for corruption then dropped to lesser charges. And then now you witness the worst ever MRT disruptions.
If anything that can breakdown it'll break down ! It's as simple as that. Don't be too worried about it, Just fix the problems & reduce the downtime !
The train that failed was incredibly old
It looks old.
Can't believe this is happening in a first world country.
Feel so bad about this..
Minister pay high quality no have
Good, we gain new experience again
if this happens in my country, it’s gonna take more than a month to fix it.
COST SAVING/CUTTING by top management for whatever reason was/is the CAUSE of ALL Singapore's past and present MRT breakdowns.

It's a BAD situation, but the silver lining is there is NO serious injury or fatality as a result.
Issue bicycles to every citizen
NS' mindset of "do it once, do it right". Doesn't seems to applies to ministers...
