Richard Powers is the name of the artist for the Author C Clark novel. He's my favorite, and I've been looking for that book for awhile. Love the videos. Thanks.

Nice to know how much my copy of neuromancer could go for. You maybe aware but those old Ace paperback covers go brittle and brown quick. I barely dare touch my copy of Neuromancer for fear of damaging the cover. Dog ears would soon break off completely on previous Ace books.
Thanks for the video and a look at some rare and unusual books. 👍

Thanks! I could have got a copy of Neuromancer earlier this year but it slipped through my hands, so close😞 Great tip about those brittle covers, handle with care👍

The run of Doc Savage had me excited.
Beautiful. A friend and I used to trade them back in highschool to read. Never knowing....

As usual stunned to see prices that, often reprint, paperbacks sell for. I’ve never minded inscriptions by authors. For me, more history (even just the changes in fashion of first names) and more evidence that the signature is genuine. Douglas Adams’ signature on its own looks like someone switching to shorthand when faced with a very tall pile of books and very little time. 😊

You're dead right Simon! I'm with you on signatures, by being personalised, almost certainly guarantees it being genuine. I had a pair of the first two HHGTTG paperbacks, both 1st printings, both signed. Sold the pai in the 90's for about £25, doh!

Regarding that big horror lot, I see Eat Them Alive by Pierce Nace is included and it goes for over £100 on its own.

    E. C. R. Lorac is a crime writer who has had a major renaissance in the last five years. She was pretty much forgotten but British Library Crime Classics have republished about a dozen of her books and second hand dealers I've spoken to have said prices have shot up. One to keep an eye out for if you see anything cheap. I've been reviewing her books in order of publication on my blog, and I have to go to the British Library to read them as the early ones are super scarce.

A complete run of Badger Supernaturals for less than $10 ea. was quite a bargain. #9 Devil's Dictionary and #10 Nightmare are both exceedingly rare. They are often the last to be added to a collection. I've spent the last 40 or more years collecting the entire series of John Spencer SF and Supernatural titles, so I can attest to how hard some are to find, let alone afford.

I know what you mean, someone got an incredible bargain. I have both SF and SN sets filmed recently on the channel, shouldn't be too difficult to find.

I daresay the same reason a clockwork orange doesnt show up in good nick is why I'd love to buy an old classic version of it...its just a damn good book and definitely lends itself to rereading, what with all the weird twisting of English and slang terms, the plot, the near future speculation. Its a true classic.

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  Рік тому +1

Absolutely, it's a real classic but strange seeing it in this original Pan edition🙂👍

The prices for old paperbacks have literally gone through the roof, and while i am a collector of sorts, i refuse to pay out the ridiculous sums asked. I just slowly add books if i can find them at a fair price but i generally avoid the ebay sharks. Guy N Smith's books have increased since his death and also because the majority of his older works are no longer available on ebook due to rights issues.

    • @BriarLeaf00

Estate sales are a decent way to find old books for cheap if you haven't tried.

As someone else mentions, Richard Powers is the guy for a great many (all?) early Ballantine SF books. He also could do quite well in a less-abstract vein - he did all of the Ballantine Tarzans in their first incarnation (with white spines). I have nearly all of the black-spine, Neal Adams covers but kind of wish I'd gone for the Powers ones now - I just don't feel like splurging on both though.
I'm a bit puzzled as to the decline in the Gor prices - in fact I think it happened earlier than a couple of years ago, though maybe it's been different in the UK, or maybe there have been multiple price swings, as I wasn't paying that much attention to eBay in the early years of last decade. But I sold some individual copies of some of the later books for upwards of $50 some 20 years ago and they would never get that now, and I remember the whole series frequently going for $250-350 back in the early 00s. Of course they were all OP at the time so that undoubtedly had something to do with it.
Doc Savage is one thing I never got into. I see the books all the time here, usually $5 apiece or so, but often in terrible condition. Maybe I'll get entranced by one of those lots some day - when I have more space and money.

Great comments, thanks. I think the Gor books have been re-assesed in recent years and the overall feeling is they haven't stood the test of time that well. I feel they are still worth having just for the covers alone, featuring some superb artwork. The UK and USA editions are quite attractive.👍
