I agree with you one hundred percent on how easily Superman could have defeated Doomsday. I imagined Superman hauling the creature off to Jupiter and dropping him into the Jovian gas layers, with the quip, “So long Doomsday. Enjoy your stay.” 😀
It would be an eight page story in a 1964 Superman comic.

The 13 year old me would be reeling from this excoriation of his favorite comic book event. I loved the novelization by Michael Stern as a kid so I read the entire series and really enjoyed them.
Everything you have said is true about how poor the comics were written up to his death but I loved the aftermath. Seeing what the DC universe went though thinking he would never come back was so fun to read. I loved seeing John Henry Irons step up and try to fill the role of Superman thank to his guilt from his tech being used by criminals and his desire to keep hope alive(I also just have a thing for heroes using big ass hammers). The mystery behind the Cyborg Superman and the terror of realizing The Eradicator was more villain than hero were both great story lines. Superboy was okay I guess.
This was a great video and I just want to finish this by saying I will die on the hill that is "The Superman mullet was badass".
There was anti-hero version of Superman in one of the Justice League cartoons that just grabbed Doomsday by the spikes on his face and used his laser vision to lobotomize him. Easy-peasy.

I concede every point you make, but I still love this whole event. World Without a Superman was, in my opinion, quite touching.

Thank you Steve especially because you honestly expressed your opinion . I never liked this Death of Superman storyline. I never liked Allan Moore's WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE MAN OF TOMORROW. I never even liked Superman the movie as much as the Animated movies. It seems to me they just wanted to get rid of Superman to dump the Copyright claims here and there. They wanted to do it in World's Finest Comics 178 The Has Been Superman, in the chapter subtitled Exit Superman Enter Nova. Within the DC comics there must be insiders who just want to see Superman dead for good.

Absolutely Fantastic video. I read this. I missed so much. Thank you. Great commentary. One comment or two. I hated Superman 149. It was so sad. Imaginary yes but hey I was 8 years old. And 2nd on the cover it always bugged me that Luthor is wearing a Doctors smock? Why? I suppose it’s a mad Scientist but it always bothered me. And as he kills Superman he says Folks. I know not picking. But again. I really enjoy your Wednesday comic commentary. And yes Comics should be fun.

I get up reading the Silver Age Superman, as drawn by Curt Swan and his contemporaries. To me, THAT was Superman. So I agree with you on every single point in your video here, EXCEPT your invocation of Michelob. I believe the proper reference should have been Sam Adams Boston Lager, the finest American beer ever brewed.
But Superman gasping out "The ship ... out of danger?" had me howling.

Thank you Steve! I agree with you that the Death of Superman stories were underwhelming and a disappointment, but I did love the Funeral for a Friend stories and the Reign of the Supermen stories. I was okay with the Return of Superman stories. I wish they had put more thought into the series, and it just felt like the storylines were a forced interruption of an otherwise enjoyable continuity

Aw, I honestly thought you'd pull a switcheroo and present some Curt Swan classic "death of .." issue, instead of the cash grab juggernaut.

As bad and gimmicky as it was it did have a massive impact on the comic industry, most of it negative. This event was the poster child for comics speculation that helped cause the comic bubble to burst. Everyone and their brother ran out and got the Death issue thinking it was going to be worth a bunch of money. But of course it wasn't due to the fact they sold a million copies of it. And when all those speculators bailed it nearly killed the comic industry that was used to printing a million copies an issue that suddenly weren't selling. It was a definite cash grab that in the long run really hurt the industry. But I guess it is an important part of Superman's mythos even today. I do think Michael makes a good point though that the real story and all the good parts do come after the set up of the death.

I remember the hype around this comic and was not impressed. Dan Jurgens art is definitely not my cup of tea, and the whole thing left me unmoved. I remember reading the replacements for Superman but I didnt think anything was great about it. I think it might be because the Superman I remembered fondly ceased to exist years prior to this. I just stopped having any real attachment to The Man Of Steel at this point.
And there’s nothing wrong with Challengers Of The Unknown!
