  • Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer clocks in at a whopping 181 minutes. And it couldn't afford to be any more than that, according to producer Emma Thomas, who told Collider's Perri Nemiroff about the editing process behind the film-and what the edit helped save, when Nolan realized he had to cut half an hour from the movie without losing any scenes, in order to secure a release on IMAX.
While the film has defied expectations at the box office-it may seem a minor detail, but the length of a film can certainly impact its gross, as it restricts the number of screenings per day-Thomas confesses she wasn't thrilled when she first read Nolan's screenplay and knew she was looking at more than three hours of film.
However, eventually that changed. Find out why in this Oppenheimer interview!

Really great questions from Perri again! So insightful to hear from Emma, who many have called one of the best producers in Hollywood. An unsung hero of Nolan’s films for sure.

Pretty much why all studios were in a bidding war for Nolan. He stays on schedule and always on or under budget.

@@kalmanta1824if you watch Hugh Jackman's interview about his time on The Prestige, Chris even let's him return to his own trailer on time every night of filming. Nolan just commands everything well about making movies.

Fun fact: Emma Thomas is the only person who worked with Christopher Nolan in all of his movies

It's mystifying that people think Oppenheimer was a great film. Terrible editing in first third. Poor sound recording. Standard biopic in the middle. With some standout impressive moments. And another jumbled chronology courtroom drama in the final third. And by the end you still don't have any clear idea of who Oppenheimer was. A brief sketch of a character. Nolan should stay in the thriller action film genres and reduce the gimmickry.
