1:45 I disagree to a certain extent. If you claim to have the knowledge, skills and coffers to build a cathedral, but only have enough to make a doghouse, then you don't have the right to advertise a/charge for the cathedral.

You act as if they were expecting the launch to run perfectly smooth, this much stress on the server simply could not be simulated, by the previous stress tests or otherwise. I agree that the launch was an L, but you kind of have to set back your expectations when the dev team is the size of a classroom, providing a game that's a niche genre. Especially if your comparing its launch to something like FF14 or ESO with massive budgets/teams, and a game design aimed towards mass appeal. Its not exactly like they have the money to hire play testers in mass.

I understand that a single server is unprecendent in most MMOs to date and what Starvault is trying to do is new and challenging. I have played 2K hours since the first open stress test and what pisses me off is that Starvault took a large portion of development time to appease big bully guilds and streamers instead of working into a basic queue system. I work with software development and knowing how your server can handle is the a basic requirement.

seems more as an indi team they didn't have the knowledge of what was possible, a crux of being over ambitious. Though is kinda shady, bending over to large groups or influencers can keep a stream of new players to replace the ones lost. In a way its like getting a blood transfusion while at the same time trying to fix the wounds. The fact they didnt have auto kicks for afk or timeouts for loggings means more the inexperience with servers netcode. I wouldn't call it a scam more inexperience. This is usually the case with people who go from making RPG's to trying to convert it for MMO and think its just about adding extra functionality and not taking in account for the hardware and redundancy systems.
Reminder the "launch" was a stress test announcement. depending on team size this can be a 2 week long data collection exercise for server load, net error codes, ect.

it might not be so much inexperience, but moreso an oversight.
The game has *always* been very niche so there has never been any need for things like an AFK timer for example.
That and their hardware being able to support a ton of people followed by code bottlenecks screwing it over leading to the horrible queue disaster.

@@ShadowReaver573 load testing of a server exists to find problems like this, but it’s expensive. You need to build bots that do all the activities of players (developer time), set up servers exactly as you would if you launched (so rental fees or capital expenses), then you need to run the test and look for bottlenecks. In my experience it could take weeks to even find one of these back-end server bottlenecks and most management doesn’t understand they need to spend the time… until spectacular failures like the one in this video happen.

Heh I remember that FF11 had the same thing. Granted you had to adjust the ingame settings but it could be done. And since players could put items in their inventory up for sale and set the price then going AFK with items for sale were really common.
And because if anyone bought an item from another player in one of the main cities an extra tax was added on, the area of Rolanberry Fields right next to the zone into Jeuno, dozens of players were AFK with items to sell with no extra tax. Mobs didn’t roam this part of the map so it was safe.
Ah, good times. It was like a little market and there were often decent deals to be found. Oddly enough I can’t remember if the same thing happened in Aht Urghan after that expansion had everyone move there as the player hub. Jeuno became an obsolete ghost town though.

The scam is hidden behind steam's refund policy and the clear difference in quality between the tutorial and the full game. You spend hours playing the tuttorial thinking hey this game is stable, then you move to the main server and bam reality slaps you in the face, there is no stability, it's just one big lag fest, steam denies refunds because they won't make exceptions to their refund policy completely ignoring the issue at hand. In my book, that makes it a scam. And a very clever one at that. They won't deploy extra servers, they won't give refunds, but they do keep selling the game just to inflate the problem further and increase the q time.

I did buy and gift this game to play with my brother, based on Kira's recommendation. We both played EVE and Rust, so the concept was appealing and familiar. So far we both have over 40 steam hours logged, with only 2 of those being actual gameplay from Haven. We tried moving to Nave on Feb 26th, and haven't been able to play since. At this point I am out $80 for a game we cannot play. We can't even delete our characters and make new ones to stay in Haven. Posting on Star Vault's Discord or Forums gets all the fanbois worked up and says it is our fault trying to play from NA.
At this point I cannot recommend the game to anyone, no matter how promising the concept is. I do not hold any hard feelings to Kira, and will continue to support him. The MMO community needs more honest creators like him. Hopefully Steam will refund the 2 copies I purchased.

I know what that feels like. I went and got some kind of premium package for Archage back when it was first coming out. Played the game for about 2 hours and then I ended up forgetting about it for ages. By the time I wanted to play the game again everything had gone down the drain and the devs had practically ruined the game.
Now they are launching fresh restart after fresh restart, each with some kind of different lable. "Archage unchained" and stuff like that.
Because of that experience and another like it I've stopped preordering games, no matter how cool they sound or how good the trailer looks.
I actually don't mind the mentality I have now. I don't get hyped for games anymore, but I'm also not a complete downer who isn't happy with anything.
I just wait till the game comes out, and if its good I enjoy it and have a good time.

I bought and played this game based off your recommendation. Honestly man, I really enjoyed my time with it. It's got issues, and the melee combat feels awful, but the crafting and skills trees are really well done. I went Bowyer, Animal taming and cooking.
I really enjoyed getting my lore skills up, maxing out my crafting choices, and using my bows and wolves. Seeing swinging dicks and full frontal nudity threw me off constantly, but was somehow fitting in the game.
I had tempered my expectations cause it's early access, so I approached it like a beta. I lost plenty of wolves to them just disappearing from the game and eventually leaving due to loyalty loss, bandits in the dungeon would get stuck in walls, or mob me randomly while I rested from a fight. It was not ideal, but didn't kill the game for me.
I made my biggest mistake a day ago when I decided to try to leave Haven and join the main world. I have been stuck in queue for 20+ hours now and can't log in. I'm not super upset, for $40 I got 63 hours of play time out of the game, so I don't want a refund, but if they can't get their main server figured out, I think I'll move on to Lost Ark next week and just not look back.

any game where you can only do first person melee combat is going to feel terrible for the vast majority of players. It gives you zero situational awareness and you have to turn your side and back to people when you are trying to see what is going on around you in a big fight. in a 1v1 it is manageable but once you start adding 2 or more people you are fighting against, if they get beside you, you can easily lose track of them.
For first person shooters, it is very different, because everyone is at ranged and it is not nearly as hard to keep track of people a significant distance away from you, but when they are up close and running around next to you, it becomes a complete cluster f*ck. Besides 1 shot mechanics, there is a reason why people hate melee in FPS games.

I started tweaking my video settings around and I managed to find a weird config that will allow me to play for about 1-3 hours at a time, but it's still horrible in a full loot PvP MMO to know for sure that your client can freeze at any time - it just makes me not want to play at all.
What will most likely happen is that most players will quit and the remaining ones will have a smooth play experience at that point. These players can then keep SV on life support until they can manage to fix their infrastructure (or maybe until the UE5 upgrade). It's really sad what irresponsible people can do to themselves.

The queues in FFXIV endwalker were because of the chip shortage and covid. You make it sound like the devs just had no idea of the amount of people who would be playing, but they did. The problem is the game saw a hug spike in popularity in the summer, which is not something they could have foreseen, and by then it was too late. They had already made their calculations for the player counts during endwalkers launch, and had in fact already made plans to expand their server capacities. But then the numbers wildly bloomed less than half a year before it, and the physical limitations made it impossible to catch up. The dev team has been pretty open and apologetic for these problems, and they just launched their oceanic servers.
Not trying to be overly critical of you, it's just as a dev myself I'm tired of people getting unreasonably angry at the FF devs for things out of their control. Too many people seem to think that game devs are magic wizards who can just materialize what they want at any given time.

Well im afraid that in a way it is a scam. The game sold over 80k copies I believe. Now after more than a week of issues, it seems pretty clear that Myrland, the one big "main world", can only handle about 1k-2k people at the same time. If they let in more like they have tried, the lag becomes so severe the game becomes unplayable.
Now they must have know this, that seems without a doubt. They have worked on this for years so there is no way in hell they didnt know their game couldnt even support anything close to 80k players. It cant even support 8k players. Thats the actual number of people now "playing" the game and im now in the queue in position 3668... That means the total number of people actually playing the game is around 4k but that is including all the people in the instanced tutorial island Haven.
Now if the number of players supported and the number of copies sold are so far apart, you got to wonder at some point, is it a scam? Because no refunds are offered and you basically have to hope Steam will do it with no guarantee they will. I dont think the game is intended as a scam, i mean, when it works its really good. But once the money started rolling in im afraid they lost the plot a little bit and should have shown restraint and stopped the sales. Instead they sold as many as they could, leaving most customers waiting outside in the rain.

    • @ageoflove1980
      @ageoflove1980 2 роки тому

Quick update: 2 hours have passed now and im in position 2745, so roughly 3/4 of the time left. That means a queue of about 8 hours. Why the game is basically unplayable is because once you finally get thorugh, you only have a 10 minute window to login to the game. After that you are disconnected and put back at the back of the line. So you cant just start the queue before you go to work or to bed or whatever, because then you will miss your 10 minute window most likely.
Of course making a second character to play in the tutorial world is not possible either. You cant even delete your character so you can play the tutorial with a new one. Literally the only way to play now is to buy a second copy of the game on a different Steam account... Hmmmmmm? How odd....

One thing to note when you spoke of the launches of things like FFXIV's end walker, and the like. The big difference there is the devs for XIV came out and were fully open with what was going on with their login servers. That there was a worldwide shortage of components for servers and they were on such a long waiting list there was nothing they could do about that. They also were upfront about what they were trying to do to lessen the strain, like repurposing the PTR servers to help take on the load, and other things. They were all very clear, open, upfront, truthful about it all, and also apologetic.
With all that most the player base understood and was fully accepting that they may be sitting for a few hours to get into the game. Heck, a lot of new discord communities were started with queue waiting groups for XIV for people to get together and do things while they wait. We had full-on D&D games going in some of them. It was great, and so many showed support and understanding for what was happening. Some even live-streamed the queue wait and had fun games they did with the people in chat watching.
Yes, you still have your handful of people that will complain and raise a stink for the sake of raising a stink and say the launch of end walker was a failure... but it wasn't, far from.
Then games like wow and such that start having issues but instead of being honest with what's going on they sweep details under the rug, blame issues on the user's end, and other nonsense.
I was fine waiting 8 hours at the longest to log into ffxiv day two of endwalkers launch as I knew why they were having issues, and what they were trying to do to ease the issues, and seeing how apologetic that it had to be this way due to the shortage that affected more than just them.
    VS
Running into issues with other games and being told it must be on my end when countless others are coming forward with the same issue and being told jack all on what in the world is going on or only being told the classic 'we are looking into the issue' while giving zero details or anything.

    - Huge population increase on launch

    - Bugs and economy/progress ruining exploits
    Systems they need:
    - Have a que system, a auto kicker., maybe server instancing. (shadowlands sharding was really good)
    - But also have working server mergers, character transfers system.
    - Have a economy reset or a progress slowing affect. If you were 2 weeks behind in New World it became hard to do earlier stuff for example. That's insane.
If you take new world it would be good if the profession cap was 150 and ilvl 550 and after 3 months both were increased by another 100 + adding a higher tier currency than gold (platinum?)

With FF14’s Endwalker launch was an interesting one for me. I did experience the long queues but I never had to wait more than an hour. (Maybe because I’m a paying too player and not on the free trial?) I know I got lucky with the reported login errors. Being in the middle of a major city and having good internet probably helped.
But once I got in there was no lag at all. No rubber banding or any other issue. To be fair I’ve never had any issues with FF14’s stability in the ten months I’ve never played. The only issues I had were entirely on my end when the router had a funny five minutes.
But then my health deteriorated and I wound up in hospital for a week then spent another two weeks or so recovering. By then the crazy queues had gone.
Though honestly even before I got ill I was considering taking a break for a few weeks. I mean I’m all the way back at the start of Stormblood and haven’t actually purchased Endwalker yet because I’m probably still six months away from even getting close to being ready for it. I could wait a couple weeks and let those who’d been waiting for Endwalker to play, especially with the weeks the subscription wasn’t being changed. Then my health forced my hand anyway.
But there wasn’t any lag that I saw. At least on Omega server.

On the first day, the server simply crashed until they limited it to 500 players, I think somewhere around 10-20K were trying to logon at any given time. That was probably the absolute worst launch I've ever been a party too. The developer did eventually make it right, one thing they did was make it free to play for several months. They upgraded their infrastructure to handle a lot more players, but the population that wanted to play dropped off dramatically.

Total... Give or take 4000 players. The daily login in of concurrent players is usually between 7000 to 9000 daily. There will most likely still be a queue time, but not nearly as long as the one I am in right now, lmao. Problem with server capacity and unpolished game (idk about it, in video Kira talked only about server cap) is just being stupid and not "without even addressing the issues of the first one". Server cap was problem only on launch, later most people left game anyway

"Most people left anyway" ... gee, I wonder why. For those that care about graphics to the point of quitting a game, they wouldn't have bought the game in the first place just by looking at screenshots. They left because they realized that, ultimately, the game wasn't polished enough to be fun for them to play. The devs didn't bother fixing the game to bring those people back.
That's what I referring to when I said "not addressing the issues of the first one"; it wasn't about server capacity.

The problem is not the idea of a shared "single" server, is how you build said server.
Unfortunately for them they don't have the easy "cop out" of EVE Online, which has systems assigned to different nodes that can be reinforced if needed.
So if you want to run a actual single server game, you better hope that server is the mother of all servers, but running Mommy Server is going to be expensive.
It's a pity, I love this kind of games (spent like 12 years in EVE Online), but the sad part of it, these are meant for smaller communities (compared to your average theme park), the moment they attract to much people, you see the pitfalls

The game mechanics just sucked in the first place, and they never took any quality of life suggestions to heart, making the players just gradually leave forever. They never bothered to think ahead of the playerbase, or what would keep players active, and simply 'made a game they wanted' but that no one else enjoyed. Food for thought: I transferred over to Myrland last Wednesday in the wee hours of the Alaskan mourn, when it seemed to still be safe to do so, and I have not successfully logged on since last Thursday... Until yesterday that is! I quickly deleted my character that was already 7 days behind in skilling and resource gathering to reroll to the tutorial Island and power level for a bit in safety, ya know, where I can actually play... Then they rolled back the server 24 hrs because they DID NOT BACK UP THE SERVER before the last patch... I have been waiting in queue now for 2.5hrs to just delete my character again so I can actually play, but as of one hour ago my estimate was at 5.7 hours remaining based on my calculations... which, an hour later, has ballooned to a whopping 6.7 hrs from this moment, and climbing. I work a full time job, so I cannot afford to sit in queue all day like some people, so for me the game is LITERALLY UNPLAYABLE.

Pretty interesting reads across the months on this from the game director, so it made me wonder about other games also. Like, I wonder if this is also a thing for indies right now, if they don't have a good picture of how much they need? Established games probably would have less issues still...

This video is spot on man, this game is one of a kind... so unique and i love it, straight up an experience you wont get anywhere else, the immersion is top notch BUT they aren't handling this whole situation right at all, last night they put out a patch that legit broke the que even more on top of making in game unplayable because of lag/delay and they legit just disappeared and just left it like that, didn't give an update or say one thing, imo why not stick around for an hour or 2 to make sure the results of the patch are alright or just wait until the morning?? on top of radio silence while the game is just over all broken completely, discord mods locked down channels in discord STILL with out saying a word.....they left it like that and didn't give any updates or information AT ALL until many hours later. That right there was it for me, the fact they did do early access on steam before going straight to full release is beyond me, the fact that they're STILL SELLING COPIES while knowing full well that it doesn't work at all as you still cant get in unless you hit the lottery and get insanely lucky, but its a over 3k person q apparently and it just goes up and down and PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME QUE NUMBERS. This mornings rollback kept the que placements shown... but removed the "timer" because it clearly broken.. going from 1 minute to 5 minutes to 25 to 150 back down to 5 down to 1 up to 140.... sometimes it would even go up to 16000 minutes, literally.....it makes no sense, so they just straight up removed it so people would stop complaining... I feel its either something severely broken that they should take the servers down and rework to fix, or its literally the servers just cant handle the amount of people joining.... in which case they need to just stop being so stubborn and make other servers to spread out the player base so its not such a load on one server. As it stands now though it seems they just want to keep doing little patches to "fix" these issues but it literally just breaks the game more every time. I'm really really hoping this game succeeds but they are making it REALLY hard to back them up.

Magic felt too slow and clunky, and melee weapons damage based on distance was frustrating on wifi because I would be hit by zombies in the graveyard 5+ meters away, and then by the time I could attack it would be hilt strikes because what I saw and what the server saw were not aligned. Weapon damage distance is a cool idea, but I don't think it works in an online game because of inherent latency.
