- Its time to prep for Purim again! My favorite holiday!!! The Jewish holidays are so fun and this one is no exception. Purim is a day where we dress up in costumes, enjoy a festive meal, give gifts of food to our friends, and hear the story of Esther read. In this video I will take you along as I am prepping for Purim as an Orthodox Jewish mom. I will chat with you about the holiday in general, our costumes, and our obligations during this holiday as Orthodox Jews. Then I will show you how to create boxes that look like books. Next, we go to Costco to get the food items for our gift boxes. After a quick pause for ice cream, we head home and pack up the boxes, search for a costume for baby firefly, and then discuss the festive meal we need to plan. I'm not Jewish, but our close friends and next door neighbors were, so I was the happy recipient of their Mishloach manot every Purim, consisting of his wonderful homemade hamantashen, which spoiled me for the shop-bought kind. I really need to learn to make it, because I sorely miss it (though not as much as I miss our friends, who moved to be near their grandchildren, and have since passed away).

When I was a kid I got so excited
thet the night before I couldn't sleep and I got up early morning and preper my
costume 😄
We had a big clabricion at school and the day after we always want to the ad-lo-yada praid or to an amusement park.
I remember that my father and I went to buy a costume for me, I made him walk all over Tel Aviv with me to find the perfect costume. eventually I picked the costume that we try on at the first store 😂😂
I treasure the memories that my parents created for me on this holiday and im sure thet your kids will treasure the memories that you created for them also!

Turns out I live in a library!!!! I heard that a library is 1000 books, so naturally I had to count, we have over 2000!!!!
Happy Purim! I’m absolutely stealing the book/gift box idea, and really appreciate the video tutorial. By the way, I’m an old retired teacher, and one of the highlights of the primary school year is “Bookoween” at the end of October; children and teachers select favorite books and dress up as a character from the book. Needless to say, teachers also specialize in costumes for children who don’t come prepared with them. I’m going on 77, but I still have my costume from “Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons”. I’m ready!

Those book boxes are so cute, & such a fun idea for mishloach manot! I remember making book boxes with cereal boxes as the base when I was a kid. Less aesthetic, but could be a useful shortcut for anybody who wants to do the book boxes without making the whole box from scratch.

This year I did a flower pot with a stemmed flower and a hand mirror in the shape of a flower or butterfly . So I guess my theme is Spring or planting /garden .
On other years I did Dr sues , Oreo , western . All of which had coordinating costumes and mishloach Manot .

Hi Chana, I love the book boxes. We tried one just with materials we have around the house. We used cardboard from boxes - not recommended. I have ordered some backing board from Amazon. I’m making book boxes for my grandkids. Thank you so much for showing us this interesting and fun craft! I have a photo but I don’t think your comments section allows for photos.

Chana, I stumbled across your channel yesterday and I'm so glad I did. I grew up very loosely Catholic (stopped practicing after my Communion as my mom was not really into church) but Judaism interested me for the longest time. In my 20s I worked for a man who was Ashkenazi. He was very interested in genealogy and I had shown him my great grandfather's journals which detailed how our family originated in Spain then moved through Austria and landed in Italy. They changed their name from Castile to Castiglione to fit in as Italian. When my boss saw the name Castile and another family name, Belmonte, he said he wouldn't be surprised if I had Sephardic roots. Apparently there were towns named Castile and Belmonte where many conversos were known to live. He used to ask me how a shiksa knew so much about Jewish customs and law lol - I don't know! It's something I just feel in me.

@@jaroffireflies I tried! It's very difficult to get past brick walls when you get to the parts of the family before they arrived in America. I'm just thankful for the journals! I do wonder why they were heading through Austria.
My whole life I've been asked "are you Jewish?" I so wish I knew more!

We did a Purim celebration in my church Bible class! So much fun! We booed Haman and cheered Esther! And had food!

The glasses look wonderful! Love them. I am in love with the book boxes, so awesome! The costumes are great, can't wait to see the Day in the Life of Purim video, always so fun. Here's an idea for you with what I am doing for Halloween this year. A friend always has a party, and my fiance' NEVER dresses up, but this year I told him I was already planning to be a Pink Lady, and he said he would be a greaser. I was in shock, not only does he never dress up, but is typically anti-couples' costumes, but willing to do this one. So, you know I am going to buy him a T-Bird jacket and then he can just wear a white tee shirt and jeans. So, how adorable would your boys be looking like little 50's greasers and you and your daughter in the authentic looking long poodle skirts and sweaters?

If you have a kids theater in your area, they may have a closet from which you can rent costumes. Not sure if they'd have something like from Scarlett Pimpernel, but you never know!

Marmee is one of my favorite names. When I became a great-grandmother I was trying to get my great granddaughter to call me Marmee. She didn’t want any part of that. She insisted I be called Gammy. Not my choice of name, but when your fortunate enough to have a birth great granddaughter at 58 yrs old you let that precious child call you what she wants to.

I just recently read the Book of Esther in the Bible .. I love her story, and I absolutely love her Hebrew name, Hadassah. I have a niece named Hadassah; it is my most favorite name. We had 7th grade Shakespear. It was weeklong. Mrs. Reader directed the whole thing. I was jealous of the popular girls. They got to be witches. I had two small roles. But still nice. I had to memorize something.

It was so beautifully written! The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge is technically a children’s story, but it’s also a novel and I’m in love with it. I ended up buying several more books by that author before I even finished it because I loved it so much lol

This holiday seems like so much fun! We are Christians and don’t celebrate Halloween but our church does a Fall Carnival and we have dressed as Bible characters in the past. It’s so much fun! We share the stories of our characters by printing out their stories or finding small children’s books and we give those with a small piece of candy attached (or without if we give a book) to each child. 🥰

Ooooo yes winni the pooh, I love the stories. The way , they learn kids that every body is different and thats ok. The way they learn emotions are ok.. ooo I just love it. ( BTW the live action movie is magical) .
I love your books and the way you make it look so easy ( if I was doing this it would become a horor thing because I would glue fingers in the books and stuf like that. I am gonna show this to my crafty daughter because she will like the idea, and be able to make it beautifull.)

No chocolate with books! We shall agree to disagree 🤣 But then again, I’m a very responsible book owner and I know so many aren’t. I’d never let my kids eat chocolate while reading lol I’m one who will make book marks with rules on them like don’t dog eat pages and always use a book mark lol

Happy Purim! I don’t celebrate Purim, but if I did, dressing up as a literary character would be right up my alley. I’d love to dress up as either Sherlock Holmes, Ms. Marple, a hobbit, or a gnome. We do dress up for Halloween, and since my kids are all over the age of 18, I’m thinking of doing a family literary character party now. Thanks for the idea!
