  • I take a look at the HOPI-9800 from #Shenzhen #HOPI Electronic Technology, a meter that displays the supply Voltage and frequency (or "frequence") as well as the Amperage draw, overall power in Watts, power factor, and annual power consumption.
It's a somewhat dangerous contraption that's not all that well put together. And I forgot to even mention the sketchy multi-national power socket.
With thanks to @bigclivedotcom for recommending-ish this thing.

Hmm. We're missing: "One moment please! ... Here are the differences between both PCBs and this is what the designers improved on...". Not really necessary, but watching the two HOPIs taken apart makes you curious. Thanks for doing a different HOPI review / analysis.

24:50 how does annual power consumption get calculated?
Annual Power Consumption (kWh):Real Power * Hours in a Year. Convert 3.043 Watts to kilowatts (0.003043 kW), then:0.003043 kW * 8760 hours ≈ 26.683 kWh
The calculated annual power consumption is approximately 26.683 kWh, EDIT: just realized via big clives review that the 9.047 kWh annual usage is if item was used for ~ 8 hours per day. You can adjust it between 1 - 24 hours. If you set to 24 then you get full 26.683 kWh in example above.

Did you notice the outlet polarity is REVERSED for North American plugs 😞 It is fine for UK plugs as they have the Live on the right side of the HOPI receptacle.

IEC, ANSI and JIS stands for International Electrotechnical Commission, American National Standards Institute, Japanese Industrial Standards
They claim the device surpass those three standards
The last line is manufacturer's company name

You can set the number of hours a device is switched on so contrary to your understanding, it will calculate the estimated annual usage if the device was on, for a given number of hours a day.

Does that device be used for european 220v 50hz electric line also?

I think the one I have is 60Hz specifically, but they do sell 50Hz versions for other markets.

One comment I need to make ( as I only just discovered this today, I am in North America ): On the HOPI meter, "L" ( Live ) and "N" ( Neutral ) are correctly labeled and measure as such. HOWEVER: The orientation of the L/N terminals are swapped from standard! In North America, when looking at a 120V NEMA outlet, Ground stud is on the BOTTOM, Neutral is on the LEFT and Hot/Live is on the RIGHT. When you plug in equipment into this meter, you will have connected your Live equipment line to Neutral on the HOPI meter, and your Neutral equipment line to Hot on the HOPI meter. I found this while debugging a 120V PCB circuit and was baffled as to why I was seeing mains on the PCB while the power switch was off ... in this dangerous configuration, my power switch was only switching off the Neutral leg, and mains was still present all over the board. PEOPLE IN NORTH AMERICA: Beware of this possible danger. And yes: I specified the USA version be given to me when I ordered off Alibaba. I am not sure if every meter is wired this way, or if the one I got just so happened to be wired this way. My point stands: Be careful with this thing and do not electrocute yourself!!!

Damn, I thought you'll plug one hopi in the other one to see the power used by the device. :(
