Just found your Utube video engine install. Like you I was around VWs in my earlier gearhead days. I never got into re-building the engines or restoration of em. We made dune buggies out of ones that had burnt or blowed up. Replaced parts swapped engines tranny's etc. Installed fiberglass dune buggy bodies after sectioning the floor pans shortening the wheelbase. That was back in the early 70s. I have a 73 standard beetle an old High School classmate brought me to do some repairs to. They gave me boxes of brand new Empi parts weatherstripping rubber seals for everything down to the little rubber heater box cable tube boots !! My limited knowledge of the main wiring harness is the issue I'm having and the main harness shown in your rebuild is similar to the new main harness that I found in all the boxes of New Empti parts ect. I had to order a new fuse box from JBugs, the old one was busted up, the rusted terminals were in bad shape. I'm trying thesamba.com wiring diagram but it's difficult to trace on such a small cell phone screen. The original harness is a bit different from this new harness (WK-113-72-73 complete wiring loom kit, bug). I found on samba the 73 is different. I'm needing VW expertise instruction as I have a new 95 amp alternator conversion Pertronix electronic ignition 009 style distributor. I see the wire gauge and color is somewhat different from the original. Any help certainly would be appreciated. In the beginning we all were hoping for completion mid November for a big show they wanted to make with the Beetle. Wiring is the majority of the holdup, among a host of other little issues I've encountered and to avert any future problems, I'm doing what I believe is necessary while the car is apart somewhat. I'll be looking back on all your previous videos pickin' up some of your tips and how to instruction Thanks
If you can swing it, buy the Volkswagen Beetle and Karmann Ghia Service Manual, Type 1 from Amazon. $60. It has several quality wiring diagrams that helped me.
Oh ok good, would just hate to see your motor seize up or something else , I have been really enjoying your video's I know i'm a few mouths behind, and I think the length of the videos are just right. You are really learning a lot about these air cooled beauties, I am on episode 36 right now thanks for sharing
I love the learning part! Grew up around them but didn't really know much. Dad had a 65 he turned into a Baja after it was rear ended and later had a 74 SB convertible. Grandpa had a 53 rag top, which was gone well before I came around. My first VW was a 79 Van followed by a 73 standard. But those went away when the kiddies came around. Just so stoked to be back in the VDub world and getting to play.
Just found this. I’ll be looking through your back catalogue for inspiration. I’ve got a stalled 64’ Beetle project in a similarly disassembled state to your car at the time this video was shot and a complete running driving FiberFab MGTD kit on a 69’ pan. Found this while looking for some further instruction. Swapping the build 1776 cc motor from the Beetle into the kit for summertime cruising with a bit more punch than the old tired 1500 can give.
I think you have done a good job at DIY. I am currently building a 1971 super beetle. Installed front and rear lights loos. But had to stopped there for now. It’s really cold and my donor car door are stocked cause of the weather, and it’s snowing. This is my 7th build.
Seven builds? All VW's? This is my second, after the '51 Willys CJ-2A/3A. I'm itching to find a third project, but I'm running out of room around the house and I hate the idea of selling a car, unless it's my wife's minivan.
@@martitinkovich4489 I said that I like the sound of it talking about the exhaust. What you don't understand?. It isn't so hard. That exhaust sounds great!. It's referred to the sound that that exhaust makes. I don't have to listen it again and again, I know how it sounds. If it was a video about a Yamaha Dragstar and you were showing the Cobra exhausts, I would tell the same. I also love how they sound (well... a bit too loud to be honest). And nope, it's in this video that you show them.
Totally agree. I have a normal one that holds a Buick V6 I’m going to rebuild. But I didn’t get one for this little engine. Would’ve made just about everything better.
Probably said it before somewhere. An absolute must and the best modification anyone can make 'the removable rear valance'....
Nice one...
Absolutely! I'm going to be much more comfortable pulling the engine for whatever reason that comes up.

Removable rear valance was one of my earliest and best mods I made....highly recommend for an enthusiast of maintenance ,and competitive users,,,
God work buddy

Nice work. Engine looks great.
Thanks, BD. Here's hoping she starts and runs once I get the wiring mess figured out.
Awesome work, good build 👍
Thanks! I'm hoping to get it driving in the next few months.

Thanks for making a Thoreau video without that stupid low-fi music. Im def going to subscribe for those other vids. Cheers
thank you for these videos.
a tip : watch series on InstaFlixxer. I've been using them for watching lots of of movies these days.
@Dayton Dario Yea, I've been using InstaFlixxer for months myself :D
Beautiful engine !. And I love the sound of it. I have to search for that exhausts.
I think it’d the EMPI GT exhaust. I love it.
Funny, i never heard it run in this video.
@@martitinkovich4489 I mean the sound of that exhaust
@@FernandoelChachi Must be in another video.

8:58 the shade tree mechanic's screwdriver toss!
It’s a classic, as long as I remember where I threw it.
If you dont mind, could you tell me the manufacturer and model of your exhaust?
GT exhaust from JBugs.
Did you cut your engine seal gasket?
Don't think so. Lotta miles on it since then without leaks.
What about the old Jeep?
Молодец :)
Спасибо!
Not bad, I would say that it would be nice if you had an engine stand; so you wouldn’t have to go to all the little issues you had torquing

What axle boots are those ?
Stock EMPI for the 68+ model years.
