- When a wreck sends a trucker plummeting over a 40-foot bridge into a swamp, two college students attempt a daring rescue. This segment was taken from Episode 105 which aired on October 3, 1989 on CBS.
Bill Kessler is now a heart surgeon, still saving lives!
This series had the best reenactments ever!!
Especially when the host says stunt man Actors or stunt driver helped us reenact the story
Hmm, this looks like one of those rare episodes where they don't broadcast the accident victim meeting with his heroes and hanging out with them for their gratitude at the end of the segment, but the victim and his family were at least grateful for the two guys saving his life
The main "victim" did not want to be filmed or meet up with anyone. The producers talked him and his wife into the final scene
That was unusual. I was expecting the truck to fall off the bridge, but it didn't.
Always wear your seatbelt!
wow!! I didn't even realize that happened due to no seatbelt! man, crazy how back then there so many injuries from having no seatbelt on
Those cabovers only had lap belts, they didn't hold well....they were made to break under big load....they were a hazard to drive, so they made it easy for rescue to get a driver out
Know I'm a year late to the party, but an old drivers joke, is with a cab over engine, you are always closest to the wreck
I agree, always wear a seat belts, you got that right,,should be wore all times,
Good man "I couldn't stand there and watch him die." Meanwhile others did. You're the man buddy.
What annoys me about the comments on these videos (love the videos) is how people comment things that are in effect today, like wear a seatbelt, complaining about kids safety seats etc. These videos are from 1980's, early 90s! Things were sooooo different then, safety standards were much lower then. Even people commenting from 7/8yrs ago. I think people forget when these accidents actually happened. Not when they were being uploaded on UA-cam.
I love when some idiot asks why the heck didn't anyone bring a cellphone who goes anywhere without one lol like in the 1980s very few people had them and they sucked.
@@liddybug8311People nowadays would never be able to survive without their dang cell phones. It’s pretty pathetic actually. I was born in 1980 and didn’t have a cell phone until I was in college. Now you have seven and eight year old children that have cell phones, it’s pretty sad. I don’t think safety standards were lower necessarily, car seats and stuff were just different back then. Also, people didn’t treat their kids like they were made of glass back then either like they do now.
There was already a wreck before the truck crashed, which is why the truck had to slam on the brakes (1:38). Those extra cars were probably from the first wreck.
i think it was pretty brave for those guys to jump off the side of the interstate to save that guy and they really didn't realize how high they were thats the most impressive thing ever
Bill is now a doctor specializing in heart transplants, still saving peoples' lives.
I don't believe anyone was killed. I found an article about the crash from the Houston Chronicle. It mentions that ten people were injured, but it doesn't mention any fatalities. The title of the article is "Heroic rescue/Texas college students snare driver from swamp".
This hasn't been said enough ... but thank you big time for reposting so many of these segments and putting so much effort into the descriptions, follow-up and related items. This show was a tremendous part of my adolescence and I still look at it fondly two decades later.
these 2 college students are just amazing!
My dad & I drove up on this scene. I was 11 at the time. I remember a young blonde girl (4-5) bloodied up, getting pulled out of a burning car. Then i witnessed the trucker going under, i was actually right beside the two heroes that jumped. I heard him ask the other if he was going in, 2 seconds later they jumped, brave dudes. As for the gators, i still got pictures. I only saw 1, it was small 3-4 foot long. Glad nobody died.
OHHH SHIT!!!! That dude went thru the window into the swamp?!! DAMN!!!
I saw this episode about 30 years ago!!! Seriously!!!
1:49, oh lord, Robert was thrown and shattered the glass windshield and landed in the swamp over the overpass. This really scared me to death when I was 12 years old when I first watched it in summer 2015. :O I am shocked to see Robert thrown from his windshield and landing in a swamp that high. Thank god Robert survived his accident. He can't thank the two college boys so much for his help.
Interstate 10 runs from Los Angles California at the west end and ends in Jacksonville Florida at the East End on Interstate 95.
This man just dont know how lucky he was, first he flew through his windshield into alligator infested water, had two complete strangers risk their safety to safe him or else he would have drowned or been attacked by a gator, just imagine if this happened at night time with only a few cars driving on the road or just imagine if he landed on concrete instead of a swamp, this guy better be a preacher or reverend right now.
I really! Feel like it's a miracle that this man survived that accident
i remember this eppisode veary well. thamks for uploading
It's been 28 years since this happened.
He goes through the windshield at 1:50 and doesn't get cut
34 years have passed since this happened. When I saw Robert get thrown from the truck, I was petrified. This happened on a Thursday. I’m sure Robert said “Thank you’ to those who saved him.
here in Europe BO-105 helicopters were very popular yerars ago, even nowadays few of then still flying. The Spanish national police force used to flight these choper until they change to the newer EC135
Armada de Mexico also uses Bo-105 helicopters in attack role, but now being slowly replaced by AS-565 Panther and now MH-60R Seahawk.
Those men are true heros.
The front grill of the truck must have come off in the accident and stuck the guard rail.
God bless those that help us
Ive had a personal history with this bridge we changed lanes in a split second If we didnt change lanes I would have been dead ( 18 wheeler Crushed a car and killed all the occupants)
Back then that guy was driving a cabover semi and thats what made him fly from the windshield and today semi trucks are long hooded
Correction the bridge is actually 18 miles long not 23.
WOW, he just popped outta there like a champaign cork. All of this drama could, of course, have been avoided if he had just taken one split second upon getting into the truck to put his seat belt ON!!!! Der xoxo
the scene I remember to this day is the driver flying right out of the semi
Thank the Lord for his love
I went over that bridge over 5,000 times. and its a dang long one.
I literally yelled “oh shit!”
yea they minet had been some in there but when you see some one in trouble like that you dont think about stuff like that. and pluse you have the lord with you when you do stuff like that. when you help some one out like that you get reworded from god when you do help some out when they need it like that two boys did. they did something realy good for that man. they didnt have to jump in that but they did to save a life that was in need of help. so they went for it and didnt think twice about it
I live in Maine, rain and snow and worst: ice.
Drive slowly on pouring rain on roads, ESPECIALLY bridges. It is the first place it freezes, first place where it can cause a skid. If you are skidding, put your foot off the brake, don’t slam, and slowly tap the brakes over and over. If you have time, slowly turn the wheel and turn on your flashers.
Wasn't wearing a seat belt.
I'm not sure that rig even _had_ one. I rode in a tow truck that didn't and the driver didn't drive safely, he kept tailgating and going fast to make sure he wouldn't be standing in the rain when he delivered our non-running van. I didn't want to directly say "Yo, you're a bit close here" but I may have mentioned something about Rescue 911 and I probably mentioned Signal 30 (look it up if you're into old driving education films about death on the highway.)
another good reason
Correction: Idiot wasn't wearing a seat belt.
I just drove across this bridge 2 days ago
Today is the 30th anniversary of when this accident happened.
when I was about 9 years old My parents and I were involved in an accident on this bridge in 1998 and If we had not switched lanes we would have gotten crushed by an 18 wheeler and killed. I dont recall what month it occured but I remember the rain comming down in Sheets as it often does.
The trucker is very lucky. Most drivers who went through cabover windshields didn't survive. Also, the truck likely didn't have seatbelts, as most cabovers didn't.
Boy, it's a good thing no alligators or god knows what were in that swamp or Robert and his rescuers would be in deep shit.
@super58173 ya ok have you though about trying to load those canisters into a trailer try again those canisters are 40 feet long and weigh up to 20 000 Kg
i love heroes
Oh shit I think went over this bridge when I was on my way to Lake Charles.
Interstate 10 is 2,460 miles long running from Jacksonville Florida to Santa Monica California
Then watch "Gator Gulch" from Episode 309.
These videos are in credible
They're big rodents that look kind of like a cross between a rat and a beaver.
Neutra rat
Back in the 80s most of the trucks were cabovers because of the length laws at the time most of the trucks only had seat belts that went across your lap not across the shoulders like they do now and you are setting right on top of the steer axle so when you hit something there is nothing in front of you to take any impact and you shoot thru the windshield
@ericfriz yeah i agree this show had the best reenactments, and also it's a shame the seventh season was the lowest in ratings nor was that particular season syndicated.
Go acadian ambulance nice save
If you are driving on the bridge, be extra careful and pay extra attention to other drivers, definitely when it comes both directions, one mistake could cause you or others lives, also watch your speed limit on any type of bridge or you could end up in the water yourself, drive carefully
dang he was lucky
This interstate 10 Bridge is about 22 miles long.
There was a cottonmouth in that water too.
01:51 is a classic scene to me.
Also a goof - The truck stopped, next scene truck's side opened.
@ATLbballboy I think that's the truck driver's foot sticking out of the water.
Was the driver not wearing a seatbelt?
This roadway has had the speed limit on it changed numerous times.
The largest swamp is Washington DC!
I can't find the bridge on google maps...
UA-cam aholic The bridge is basically the stretch of Interstate 10 between Baton Rouge and Lafayette, Louisiana. Go to google maps and search for "atchafalaya basin bridge" and it will drop a pin near the middle of the bridge.
Here's a link to the location:
www.google.com/maps/search/Atchafalaya+Swamp/@30.3503521,-91.7684898,6576m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en
Look for it on Google Earth
This is in my home state of Louisiana
I have gone down that bridge a lot of times
Up 'till now I couldn't understand how you could fly out your cars windshield.
they did not say if he did or did not have his seatbelt on. believe me, seatbelts can break and people can slip out.
i love that bridge of baton rouge oh no the guy in the water
when he said aligators and all that stuff then why did he jump in the water
William Back to save a life even at the risk of his own life its what heros do.
Not all hero's wear capes.
@jcnme27 but, but that 4
The thing about alligators and snakes is they stay away from humans, they are smart!
You guys keep saying he should have been wearing a seatbelt actually not wearing his seatbelt and him going in the water it's actually what probably saved his life cuz those old trucks are called cabover trucks the ones that are flat up in the front there is no protection and those trucks even if you have your seatbelt you don't have to hit something real hard or something doesn't have to hit you hard in the front basically your you're going to die that's why they don't make them anymore so him going through the windshield in the water may have actually saved his life
I wonder how Robert Fordham is doing today. I think he is now retired from driving trucks.
I discovered he subsequently died March 2004 in Columbia, South Carolina at the age of 56
it looks like they made it out OK. i think the man that was ejected was the only one that needed the most help
Does anybody have the episode where a boy accidentally gets hung in the woods?
@allgood2000 change the name to Louisiana Swamp Save
I drive over that bridge on a regular basis
whatever at least those men had the guts to save that guy even if it meant risking their own lives
Only God knows when it's our time to go.
I was 8 yrs old!
A wreck on the basin bridge how unusual
Like this episode
Wear You're Effing Seat Belts!!
Definitely words of wisdom, my friend.
God what a mess
@ATLbballboy its his foot
Wow
He went fly out
SEAT BELTS!!!!!
Good point. I was in a flatbed towtruck in 2016 and couldn't find seatbelts in it anywhere so I wonder if the kind of truck represented in this clip even had any.
It is Atchafayala
allgood you rock :)
👍
Let’s stay in alligator infested waters where we can’t assess our patient or do CPR if he goes south because he might have a “broken back”. Sheer buffoonery.
Two words....SEAT BELTS!!
He wasn't wearing his seat belt
Seat belts
SEATBELT!
Always buckle your seat belt especially truck drivers or you'll end up just like him who was flown out of his truck
I wouldn't have jumped, but then again I have a child to think about.
Twee Widdershins i got 3 and 2 grandchildren i do it because i hope someone would help mine if they need it.
I hate Gaters.. Crocks are almost as bad... ok they are as bad...
Get an anvil
Two Words: SEAT BELT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
плавать не умеет что ли?
