Thanks for this as it may help my buddy..... HOWEVER; you should probably remove your text regarding removing the POSITIVE cable first.... ALWAYS REMOVE THE NEGATIVE FIRST!!!! Otherwise, you may arc the power if the positive happens to touch metal or you accidentally ground it yourself or with a tool. As you said, safety first! Again, thanks as this may save my friend some hard earned cash :)
Absolutely correct Miah Palmer! i have been working on cars in a professional capacity for more than 50 years, and still today see many "technicians" who claim the correct way is to disconnect the positive terminal. They should take some time off their busy lifestyle, and spend it to study the flow patterns of DC electricity! Cheers from Indonesia & keep up the good work!
i had the exact same situation on my 1998 honda civic ex manual this weekend.--My negative cable connection was old and loose and held down with a screw for years. LOL. But since it was still starting previously with the screw, I thought it was fine and not an issue.--Prior to this negative battery cable switch($8.99 at oreilly), i had a flashing check engine and decided to switch out the ignition coil, distributor cap, distributor rotor, wire set, and spark plugs(all from an OEM kit off ebay($75.99 with free shipping). I thought i installed the tune up kit successfully but imagine my worry when it died after trying to start but the lights still worked but then died and no power right after turning the key. I thought too I needed a new starter and then i spiraled into a "how much is this going to cost me?" but then i decided to switch out this cable like you did. I am not a car person at all but youtube has helped me immensely. Great vid and explanation.---also, i do need a timing belt change and pump but that is out of my league. lol.
I would agree. Old Rusty cars. Check the ground from battery to car. Mines did the same thing. Can be a nightmare chasing it but start with the basics first.
The contact area for the cable to fender, should be cleaned to bare metal then painted over. I added auxiliary grounds, cleaned and replaced others. Using an volt/ohm meter would also indicate poor connection. I find some bad shops throw parts at a car until it runs or you go broke.
My car is doing the same exact thing yours was ... and I replaced the battery cable and it still doing the same thing .... any ideas ? Anything will help at this point 💯
if it atarted before ur mech did all that work. u need to have him check the timing. if u mess with the timing belt u bwtter mack sure u put the engine back in time, or it work start.
I have a 2000 honda si with b20b an im going through the EXACT same thing . Battery is new and starter I'm I'm going to try an replace the negative wire an place it some where else cause my battery is in the truck
It's your connection. Grounds. You need clean connection on everything, the battery should at least be 4 gauge wire to ground. 4 gauge is best for car or lower rated & always upgrade your engine ground when replacing battery & battery wire. This is why his car shorted out & could fry your cars brain ECU.
We have the same car and i have the same preoblem, i just replaced my battery and whent i insterted the new battery my car turned on like new, i went to put gas turn it off turned it back on and it turned on...got home turned it off i turned it on to see if it still good an it did the same thing again. The car powers the stereo and the windows. May i have the same problem.?
i know hondas have a main relay issue which runs the fuel pump and the horizontal distributor will leak oil into the icm and shorting it out.. also check major ground wires for good connection...
Ah cousin of mine going through this main relay problem its making ah clicking noise causing the fuel pump not to run,but its unclear whats causing this problem...
Out of the blue my car wouldn't start and I had to replace the terminals too, although not the whole cable just the metal clamp. Before that the heat sensor was dead and I never knew till, lo a behold, it overheated. A mechanic later replaced the fan ...backwards. It subsequently short circuited and literally melted. The new fan (installed by a new mechanic) was wired directly so it would run whenever the car was turned on period, because it wouldn't work traditionally. Another mechanic from before the car was mine had put in " racing sparkplugs " (oh boy) that were already yellow when they were noticed and quickly replaced. I've had a lot of bad luck and a lot of bad mechanics :-( But now the car says it's over heating again even though the front was pretty cool to the touch when it was immediately turned off (my boyfriend was driving alone so I didn't get to see what was happening). Well...here we go again. If anyone has a Honda civic lx 2000 and has had problems with it, I would appreciate tips and tricks on knowing what some of the usual problems are. I'm too broke for this. :-/
You spent all that money instead of checking the most basic things .. you always start from the easiest to the most complex reasons. Process of elimination for diagnosis.
No. The only problem was the cable. I never took keeping your terminals clean and rust free seriously until this expensive problem. Just goes to show you these little things are important.
Nah even with bad alternator the battery light would come on but run if voltage regulator was bad - common reason for new alternator - relays could be a reason too, one time for me it was a loose harness connector on the side - low battery would make a clicking sound but obviously a loose ground can also cause many headaches - even when I replaced my ground my mechanic had an electrician reground another thick ground wire to the alternator
Ouch! Sorry you spent all that money for nothing. And the mechanic is either a crook or needs to go back to school. I'm about to tackle my daughter's civic starting problem. I think it may be the switch down at the clutch. It's a 1995 with 375,000 miles on it!
My problem was the little piece at the top of the clutch pedal that pushes the switch in (when you start the clutch must be pushed in). Jumped the wire to the switch and it started right up!
I had the exact same problem & your video (the negative battery terminal) fixed it. Thanks for saving me the trip to mechanic & some $$$
Si xzx zzz
God bless you, I was having this same issue. I watched your video and went to my car and sure enough it was my neg terminal lol
Same here 🤣

Thank you Robert sn. It was just like u show help. My friend to save some money . Once again thank you for your help.
thank this video. saved me a lot of money.
Same here pal, this video is 6 years old and it really saved my neck from buying a new starter and battery lol
thanks bro this fixed my problem
Never disconnect positive terminal first Negative (black) always comes off first.
agree with you 🔋
Just remember black is first off and last on and you're good.
I would agree. Old Rusty cars. Check the ground from battery to car. Mines did the same thing. Can be a nightmare chasing it but start with the basics first.
THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! I would of never guessed just changing a corroded ground would make my car start and run!!!!!!!

also he should have sanded the contact point for the ground cable..
My car is doing the same exact thing yours was ... and I replaced the battery cable and it still doing the same thing .... any ideas ? Anything will help at this point 💯

Thank you for sharing.
It looks like you have both corroded + and - battery terminals and cables
That mechanics was shit. He should have started with the basics first!
He got u good

Same thing happened to my 99 civic did everything this video said and still same issue. Did you ever get yours fixed?
i know hondas have a main relay issue which runs the fuel pump and the horizontal distributor will leak oil into the icm and shorting it out.. also check major ground wires for good connection...
Chris Green look me up on FB And add me need to know if you know 06' honda civic lx starter replacement

Who would have thought?
Porque colocó el mismo tornillo con óxido al cable tierra nuevo.
Bad ignition?
No. The only problem was the cable. I never took keeping your terminals clean and rust free seriously until this expensive problem. Just goes to show you these little things are important.
i knew it thank you , i fix and walaa..

lansaguy Thank you for the input. I would have never thought of looking there for a starting problem. Thanks.
+lansaguy wow I'm having the same problem...how exactly did you fix this? Thanks
lansaguy I just changed mine ! I got them for 7 bucks for two of them at Honda haha 😂
Easy fix
