    Wow. I'm grateful for this very good explanation of the "how"s and "why"s of blood pressure readings. I am completely ignorant on this topic but have been instructed by my doctor to take daily readings since they generally fall into the 135-155+ on the systolic scale (Haha! the fact that I just knew how to say that speaks to the clarity of your instruction). The problem was that I didn't know what the numbers meant and/or how to gauge what the full picture of the 3 components represented. This helped so much! Thank you. (PS: I still know next to nothing on the topic, but now I know SOMETHING!).

    Thanks for explaining blood pressure as simple but accurate terms for non-medical people. Seem so hard to find info without all the technical details and jargon. I realize it's an important concept. Thanks.

    I'm not a student, but I wanted to understand blood pressure ranges so I have a better idea of what the numbers mean when I have my blood pressure taken.
    Nurses always tell me my blood pressure but no one has explained the simple statement... both numbers need to be at or below 120 and 80.
    Thank you for a great explaination.

    Is afterload Systole?

    • @NurseMinder
      @NurseMinder  2 роки тому +1

      no afterload is the pressure the heart has to overcome to eject blood into the vessels, imagine you are trying to open a door and the wind is pushing it in - you have to exert more force to get through the door, that is afterload. The tension and stress is in the ventricular wall vs systole which is in the vessels and is related to vascular tone

    • @NurseMinder
      @NurseMinder  6 місяців тому +1

      Yes - depending on your exercise level - I.e high level athletes can have lower levels; health history - patients with high blood pressure may have a slightly higher “normal” as long as it is their medically directed target

    • @NurseMinder
      @NurseMinder  Рік тому +1

      Sodium attracts water, so it will increase blood pressure. It is why low sodium diets are recommended as first line treatment for high blood pressure

      Its important to know that numbers alone are not enough to diagnose anything. We always treat the patient, and questions such as mood, feelings, activity level, medications , etc come to mind. The other element is we look at trends to identify a bigger picture

  • @Studious4Health
    @Studious4Health 3 роки тому +2

    Thanks for the video! I'm a paramedicine student here in Australia and understand BP and all its implications. However, I always struggle memorising our 'between the flags' system, and the pre, hyper, and stages of hypertension because the number seems arbitrary in my brain. For example, I know that my resting hr sits at about 53 (im an athlete) and that other people will sit at 80 happily, I then know that over 100 is tachycardic because I know what a normal heart rate is. This is when I get confused though: because I don't know what mm/Hg really is... Like I know it is the measurement of pressure, but I just never 'learn' what is hypo and hypertension. Does anyone have any suggestions? :(

    • @NurseMinder
      @NurseMinder  3 роки тому +1

      Hypo is generally considered less that 90 systolic and hyper is greater than 135 systolic (pre hypertension)

      The question I have is: do you feel ok? Was this a home machine? What were you doing before you took it?
      If the cuff is too loose or too tight, the readings will be inaccurate- that being said, if you feel ok them I would watch the trend. Take you BP at the same time, in the same position (lying or sitting) as you did above over several days
      For curiousity - take it four times a day - morning, noon, evening and night. Track it

    • @NurseMinder
      @NurseMinder  Рік тому +1

      The systolic number (138) is good, the diastolic (100) is high
      If you consider your veins like a water hose, the top number is the pressure in the line when the water is turned on. The diastolic is the number when you turn the water off. Still some fluid in the tube, but not full pressure
      Lots of reasons for a higher diastolic
      Might be diet (too much salt), smoking, alcohol, high fat diet - lots of opportunity to lower it

  • @morgannordahl4355

    What about blood sugar and potassium levels? Do they teach that in nursing school? Just curious. Seems like the pharmaceutical companies have some control over the education system. They don't want anyone to know how to prevent or even cure high blood pressure without pharmaceuticals. You can make your bp drop like a stone in a matter of days by cutting out carbs and upping your potassium levels without any meds at all

    • @NurseMinder
      @NurseMinder  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Morgan. Yes diet and exercise are tools we can use to control blood pressure. Potassium is tightly regulated in the body and the heart is sensitive to changes. Low or high potassium will cause heart arrhythmias. I can see cutting carbs in relation to changes in weight which will help with blood pressure- but it does not work for everyone. Sometimes we need the support of pharmaceuticals
