You are absolutely right! Luckily after I wrote You the next day I got my shift schedule, and I will be on off on different days than my room mate does, so it won't be an issue. I just ordered my and it is on it's way towards London, so I am very excited! Thy for your thoughts!
@RainK9 I would say yes they need an amp. If you don't have an external amp, I'd choose either the 32ohm or 250ohm versions. The 600ohm models are really designed for a good amp. They'll give you the best sound of the three, but they need a good amp.
@AllHDGaming Yes. STX has a amp inside that can output more than 100 mW into 600 Ohms and swing 20 Volts, which is MORE than enough even for 600 Ohm version of this.
Hey! Very nice detailed explanation... i have to ask though, which amps are those on your table? And do you know if the Fiio E9K with a Fiio E7K would be a nice budget set-up for these headphones? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the great review. I have a HT OMEGA CLARO Plus sound Card, which I consider to be a high end pc sound card (at least it makes sound much better compared to my on board audio). Would the Beyerdynamic DT880 600ohm be overkill for my soundcard? At normal vloumes is the leaked sound from open design very intrusive to others or minor? Note: I would use it for video games (these days they have incredible music), videos, mostly electronic music, etc... Thanks for your help.
@Photo314159 It's a high end sound card it says on the description that it powers up to 600 ohms because it has a built in headphone amp, I guess I answered my own question though.
Yes, slightly. The 600ohm has a lighter voice coil so it can respond faster and resolve more detail. The tradeoff is that they are the most demanding on power.
if i was going to power the 250 ohms from a small portable amp like the fiio e5, would they suffice? i heard they suck a lot of juice even in the 250 ohm version. i am not too overready to go buy a dedicated amp so would you suggest i risk getting the 250s with a small amp or go with the 32 ohms? i just hope the 32 ohms sound good enough if i go with them
Honestly I don't know. I'd think you wouldn't want the 600ohm Beyers on a portable amp, maybe get the 250ohm instead. But I could be wrong, there might be a strong portable that would do them justice.
I am listening a lots of guitar and vocal based music, and this article says that the 880 has better mids than the 770. After I have been able to save up some money, I will deffinetly by one 770 too.
Nice review. I wouldn't recommend the 32ohm version to anybody though. For portable use, I would get the 250ohm version and invest in a portable dac/amp to power them. FIIO amps do a really good job of powering the 250ohm version, so I would highly recommend one of them.
It will. I have Asus Xonar Essence ST and it powers my DT880 600 ohm and DT990 600 ohm adequately when you switch the card's amp to 600 ohm mode. But I recommend DT990 600 ohm for the Asus card, seems a better match. I use a valve amplifier for DT880 600 ohm instead.
Hi, Could You please share Your experiences with me, because I am bouncing between the DT770 pro 600 / DT880 pro 600 / DT 990 pro 600 review by review. I got kinda dizzy :--)) I have the Asus Xonar Essence STX too. I would use it for 80% music ( all sorts, exept the mainstream crap ) / 10 % gaming / 10 % movies. Cheers
I have the same soundcard as you do. I have the 250 ohm version of the Dt880s and they sound absolutely fine with the HT Omega Claro. Personally though, I'm only going to use the HT Omega Claro as a DAC and send it via RCA's to my new Schiit Asgard 2 I bought just recently
@TheZubaroo Thanks! I'd like to do a Senn 650 review as well. I've got a huge head and the Senn 650 clamping pressure worries me a bit since it can be strong. The AKG's are awesome though and a bit more open, with better midrange than the 880's. They have a bit less detail retrieval than the 880's I'd say, but are easy to listen too. I'd call them a bit laid back by comparison. It's a tough call. For a bigger change maybe try the Senns. It's all up to you.
@MusicTriggerHappy I don't have the 325i's to compare them to, but Grado has a signature sound, and it's definately different form Beyer. You'd have to hear a Grado to know what I mean.
I liked both, but they're really completely different. If it's just sound Q you're after, I like the DT880's, but if you travel and want something sleek that sounds great, then the T50's or actually now the newer DT1350's would be better.
DT880 are overally better than DT990 in most applications. I think you should rather treat semi-open hp like fully open in terms of isolation and sound leaking though I listen always in my quiet room alone so did not do comparisons on that. If you have a roommate I would recommend DT770, they are also much cheaper than DT880. I never had 600 ohm DT770, I had 80 ohm that have mainly bass, I found 250 ohm version much better. My guess is that 600 ohm would sound very good with a Xonar Essence card
@birekhu I wouldn't reccomend it. You really need a good headphone amp for these. If you don't want to get a headamp then maybe try the 250ohm versions instead.
If you like using dolby headphone go for DT990 600 ohm. Anyway It will be better for gaming and movies. DT990 and DT770 have more bass than DT880. DT880 600 don't seem like headphones for a PC, they are also more delicate than the other two. 600 ohm are only in premium version for dt990 and dt880. DT770 600 ohm are no longer produced I think. Also DT770 are closed, not good for long sessions like open DT990. I would go for DT990 600 ohm myself if for use with Xonar Essence.
That's a tough decision, both are great phones and both are very comfortable. That's a decision only you can make I'd say. I'm not familiar with that Fiio amp so I'm not sure I'm much help for you unfortunately. Good luck though!
@wlam215 Honestly that is a tough call. I like them both very much. I'd sell others before these two. 702's - better midrange and soundstage, 880's - better detail retrieval and bass impact, and no headband pressure. Both are awesome though...but if I had a gun to my head, and a great amp I guess I'd keep the 880's.
I have it and I just bought these headphones, it powers it, but it is not enough at all. On my brother comp who has the Forte sound cart, his is louder.. I'm going to buy the Little Dot III amp.
I must say I did not listen to DT770 600 ohm. They are no longer produced as PRO but are as premium. I have 250 om and 80 ohm pro models. They are crispier tightier sounding than their dt990 counterparts, they have very good soundstage, don't react as good to dolby headphone as open backed phones though. They isolate very well. For long sessions at home not that good. I use them on the go. At home you take them off after an hour and you feel deafened, stunned, like a fish taken out of water.
Hi, sssboa1, Thy. At the moment I cannot use a fully opened HP, because I live a room mate, and I don't realy want to hear thing when I wanna listen to music etc, and I am not into dolby HPs, if dolby, then a proper speaker sett. I would like to use it for looong sessions, so at the momnet it seems the 770 is out, so it leaves the 880, and I found a realy good review on head-fi dot org: guide-sonic-differences-between-dt770-dt990-models-more end of part1
dt 880 600 ohm is good for mixing track and mastering ? thank you
You are absolutely right! Luckily after I wrote You the next day I got my shift schedule, and I will be on off on different days than my room mate does, so it won't be an issue.
I just ordered my and it is on it's way towards London, so I am very excited!
Thy for your thoughts!
Oh I see, thus allowing better transfer of sound. Thanks Mate. BTW, do you recommend the DT880 or the T5p ?
Another great headphone review video, keep it up man!
Great job on the review Sir! Keep up the good work! Thanks!
@RainK9 I would say yes they need an amp. If you don't have an external amp, I'd choose either the 32ohm or 250ohm versions. The 600ohm models are really designed for a good amp. They'll give you the best sound of the three, but they need a good amp.
Hey, quick question! So if I get the 600 OHM version, would a Magni2+Modi2 (Schiit) amp and dac stack have enough power to drive them? Thanks!
-Matt
@AllHDGaming Yes. STX has a amp inside that can output more than 100 mW into 600 Ohms and swing 20 Volts, which is MORE than enough even for 600 Ohm version of this.
Hey! Very nice detailed explanation... i have to ask though, which amps are those on your table? And do you know if the Fiio E9K with a Fiio E7K would be a nice budget set-up for these headphones?
Thanks in advance.
Hi Clint! Do you think this DT880 600 ohm version is good for hard rock and fast metal music?
Thanks for the great review. I have a HT OMEGA CLARO Plus sound Card, which I consider to be a high end pc sound card (at least it makes sound much better compared to my on board audio). Would the Beyerdynamic DT880 600ohm be overkill for my soundcard? At normal vloumes is the leaked sound from open design very intrusive to others or minor? Note: I would use it for video games (these days they have incredible music), videos, mostly electronic music, etc... Thanks for your help.
I you are talking about the one's you can see in this video, they are the Paradigm Studio 20 bookshelves.
These vs. the DT990? What are the differences in sound?
Would an Asus Xonar Essence STX power these headphones up well? Or would you recommend a lower ohm version.
if i was going to power the 250 ohms from a small portable amp like the fiio e5, would they suffice? i heard they suck a lot of juice even in the 250 ohm version. i am not too overready to go buy a dedicated amp so would you suggest i risk getting the 250s with a small amp or go with the 32 ohms? i just hope the 32 ohms sound good enough if i go with them

If you could only keep one, the k702 or these dt 880/600's, which one would it be? thanks
It does not. I believe it's just the use of stronger magnets to increase the magnetic flux in the voice coil gap.
I'm not familiar with that card, but for 600ohm headphones I most always suggest a good standalone headphone amp. It may sound fine though.
Nice review.
I wouldn't recommend the 32ohm version to anybody though. For portable use, I would get the 250ohm version and invest in a portable dac/amp to power them. FIIO amps do a really good job of powering the 250ohm version, so I would highly recommend one of them.

Would it be ok to use this or other 600 ohm headphone with a stereo amp, a marantz pm-44se?
Does this headphone have the Tesla technology, and what does it do? Thanks.
What's a good headphone for rap and hip hop?
@TheZubaroo Thanks! I'd like to do a Senn 650 review as well. I've got a huge head and the Senn 650 clamping pressure worries me a bit since it can be strong. What >$300 tube headphone amp would you recommend for these?

@AllHDGaming I don't know what that is, but if it's a soundcard I'd reccomend a lower ohm version.

Not for the "Max" quality or even close, but they should sound good. A standalone headphone amplifier is usually in a whole other league.
Will the sound quality differ from 250Ohm and 600Ohm?
what would be a good portable amp for this?
Will a typical home 5.1 receiver power these properly? I have a Pioneer 500 watt 5.1.
I haven't heard the 990's in a long time so I really couldn't say. Someone else has a comparison video on here though with both I think.
Can you review the AIAIAI TMA-1?
I just wanna say that these headphone survived a deployment in Afghanistan, still sounding good and holding up nice. I give it a 9.0 out of 10
Do I need a headphone amp if i have usb audio interface?
why you pick the 880 instead of 990?
@birekhu I wouldn't reccomend it. You really need a good headphone amp for these. If you don't want to get a headamp then maybe try the 250ohm versions instead.
awsome well done review
@xpozd2radar A better question would be, what isn't better than beat studios?

Yes probably, but that's why they have other impedence options.
Also the DT990 has harsher highs
@Photo314159 Ok thank you. There is an unused akg k141 monitor for 70 usd, and its a tempting price for the value, thats why i asked.
@AlumarsX you really havent compared the two have you
are these better than beats studios?
DT 770? :)
@wlam215 Honestly that is a tough call. I like them both very much. .Great vid.
@LoliciousXD The Bellari HA-540 is great with these at $300, if you want to spend more I'd look into Woo Audio.
I must say I did not listen to DT770 600 ohm. They are no longer produced as PRO but are as premium. I have 250 om and 80 ohm pro models. @awellam Thanks! It's a labor of love, that's for sure.
Sonar essence will power these. I personally use dt770 300ohm and have dt1350 for portables.
Lol, nice! Yep, these or the SR-325is from Grado would do it. More, but not bloated.
Nevermind, didn't hear you the first time when you mentioned the name of the tube amp.
880's have an even sound so they are better for mixing. 990's have more bass and higher end
Hi, sssboa1,
Thy. At the moment I cannot use a fully opened HP, because I live a room mate, and I don't realy want to hear thing when I wanna listen to music etc, and I am not into dolby HPs, if dolby, then a proper speaker sett. @quinonezes86 Thanks, will do!
@TheiBurley Well thank you! Like minds...
@chadjrmy I haven't heard the pro so sorry but I can't comment on them.
@xpozd2radar most definately.
lol, sorry not the T5p, but the T50p.
More neutral bass.
@joeman10011001 Thank you!
"Clint The Audio Guy" *Has shit audio* apart from that good video and detailed
hair.... :)
600 ohms!!! Lol no thanks. The *amp will cost more than the headphone itself.
