- Yep! Another review of a common, long-lived headphone so you and I can establish common points of reference on sound descriptions. Enjoy!

As an Asgard 3 and DT 880 600 ohm owner I can confirm everything said here about amplification is true. I am using a Modi 3+ and that combo works very well for me (you don’t need an expensive dac although it helps). I think your amp has the biggest influence on whether you will enjoy these headphones. Also, these will take a little time to burn in so the treble may sound a little peaky at first but will smooth out after a few days of use.
this review was a good idea. established well known headphones are a great reference point before going all out top tier. stuff like this is key for channel growth as they bring in the people starting out in the hobby and those people are usually there for the ride to learn anything they can.
I've been running my circa 2010 DT-880 600 off an original Schitt Vahalla for years. Sounds pretty good to me, especially given the reality that my tinnitus makes investing in really high-end headphones a fools errand.
You have some bad noise in the background 😋
I recommend Dekoni Pads. More pronounced base and siblence is a bit less. The stock pads go flat pretty quickly and its a nightmare to replace them or wash them abd get them mounted again. It drove me crazy last time and I couldnt get it mounted.
Dekoni "Choice Suede" is great.
This particular model and ohm edition seems to have held its own for so many years now. Do you think the modern Beyers are in the same league in terms of sound quality? I have the DT 900 Pro X, for instance, which I like, but I haven't heard the 880s.
I'm so happy that I finally got my 600 ohm before they stop making them, they are the best value in audio if someone has amp for it
It seems impossible to get a direct comparison between the 880 & 990 edition 600 ohms.
I despare at listening to all the 'experts' who all use different equipement so there really is no comparison.
Thinking of running them on a Ta-26 when I can get my hands on one. 500 milliwatts into 600 ohms. Basically a darkvoice with a shitload of power and better components.
I plan on doing the same
How did you find them on the TA26? Still clipping like the Darkvoice at 2pm? Thanks
The Dt88 00 ohm is 100 mw max. Be careful
I am currently using Beyerdynamic DT990pro 250ohm (ear pad replacement). If I replace it with DT880 600ohm, will I be able to feel the difference in price? I'm really curious
Had to sort through a lot of physics to find you, lol. Subbed immediately. PS I LOVE my Asgard 3, as you know!
9/21/21 Been reading and thinking about this one for a Long time. Sale today and review of this video helped me decide. Thanks....PS sold out shortly after my order. Will plug into my e30/Asgard 3
and hear what happens!
You definitely need a significant amp to run these. I have a HiFiMan EF-400…high gain at about 2pm…still not really cranking. That’s a 4w amp too…great balls on review IMHO..👍
try some serious tube amp with them, those drivers are wild when fed well
when I compared those to 6XX it was really weird feeling, like a wet dirty cloth thrown at speakers that how was my first impression of 6XX after DT880 😂 after awhile my brain adjust to dirty sound of 6XX but first hit is a shock for real
I listen to DT880 and after a while I bought HD 6XX, and like you I tried to like it by but I just can’t, and now I’ve heard PC38X out of an Apple dongle and it’s surprisingly clear highs with a warm and tight controlled bass that I haven’t found in both my headphones, I wonder what else is out there to discover.
@@aeon7748 lot to discover, my dt880 is modded on balanced cable always amped to the max potential, amp is crucial for any headphones that are not cheap garbage
Great review, thank you. What do you think about dt880 vs HD600 soundwise?
Beyers have more extended bass and treble than the hd600. The beyer are brighter on top.
Loki is heaven for Beyers.
Bring the mic closer - you sound distant, as if speaking in the other room. Run them on the Burson Soloist 3x and you will be amazed again.
lo que comentas sobre el buen sonido despues de encadenar con un buen amplificador, aplica tambien para version de 250 ohms?
I'm planning on buying these but I can't find any amps/DACs that can power it.
Do you know if there is dac and amp below 150 dollars each?
Btw: Do you think an old Sony str de325 receiver be able to power the dt880 600 ohms headphones? Now if there is no option for an amp and dac under 150, then will an ifi hip dac be able to power the 250 ohm version of the 880's?
Do you think an old Sony str de325 receiver be able to power the dt880 600 ohms headphones? - Yes. It won't sound as good as a dedicated headphone amp will, but it will be decent and should have plenty of power.
Do you know if there is dac and amp below 150 dollars each? - I thought the iFi Zen DAC did great as a DAC for the DT880, and has a bass boost if/when you want a little more low end oomph. If you're US based, the amps I'd consider are the Monolith Liquid Spark, Schiit Magni 3+ (NOT the Heresy or IEMagni for DT880), or Geshelli Labs Archel 2 GMR. If you're in the EU I'd use your receiver and then save up until you can get a Lake People G-103s to match with the Zen DAC. Good luck!
@@wavetheorysound Thanks so much for the recommendations:) your the only one even helping me find an amp, all other say I need a tube amp to drive them. I did some research and I will go for the zen dac v2 and a lake people g103-S. And I will use my receiver till I have enough for the amp, do I need to use it with a dac though?
Btw: Have you tried the 880's with the lake people g103-S, if so then how do think this amp handles the treble? Also, do you know what the output impedence is on this amp? (I can't find any reviews about it.)
@@elliotandersson8302 please find me on head-fi.org under the name WaveTheory. Might be easiest to have a PM convo there. Best!
Planning on getting these. I've a ifi micro Ican se. Do you think it will pair well?
I have those on my mt 602 and they are really sweet and relaxing
Hi, have you tried them on g111mkII? What about trebles? Thank you.
I use them with a chord mojo and the treble is well controled
Lovely pipe in the background😅
Hi.. May I ask if I can use Topping L30 ii to drive this headphone? We don’t have those amps (JDS or Schitt) available in my country. Thank u 🙏
I can't say for sure. The L30i did not. The L30ii may be ok, I just don't know.
Thank you for your reply@@wavetheorysound
is it good with fiio k5 pro
or fx dac x6 mkii?
How is it with the schiit Magni 3+?
Hey, out of curiosity I bought a pair. I have a DIY tube amp which I assume is a push pull type. I didn't find them sibilant or sharp no, but what I experienced is, bass distorts very easily. Is this a common thing? Just to make sure I watched your review again but you didn't mention something about bass distortion. Of course I just got them and haven't given them enough time. I just wanted to know if there was a fault.
My guess would be amp distortion. My DT880 usually handles a 3-5dB boost in the bass region with now issues on a proper amp. Got any other amp(s) to try them on?
@@wavetheorysound that was my guess too. I tried with sp400 too, it was better but also less powerful and less loud. (Single ended) I could easily crank the volume to 99 in high gain and it was not very loud. I will try to experiment more and maybe try to get my hands on another amp. Thanks (also edited earlier comment)
@@fahryst that's very odd. Please find me on head-fi.org under the name @WaveTheory and send me a PM.
Did you try to EQ them?
Or maybe used some different ear pads?
They scale really well with more voltage, currently i would pair them with an a30 pro.
Hi, personally I'm not much of an EQ-er. I like iFi's bass boost because it's in the hardware domain and accessible with the touch of a button. That said, I have tried to EQ down the Beyer highs on a couple different Beyer models and find that it really pinches their soundstage. I haven't heard an A30 pro yet. My experience with Topping amps thus far has been that they do not match well to Beyer cans, being very sharp. Perhaps they've fixed that in the A30. Hopefully I'll get a chance to find out.
@@wavetheorysound If you get a a30 pro in your hands, i would be very interested in a review with the 880 compared to the asgard
@@wavetheorysound this headphone with topping L30 and E30? if not id welcome suggestions
@@hotdog9262 E30 is fine. I don't like L30. My recommendation for DT880 at entry level is Liquid Spark amp.
Is the dt880 more resolving than HD600 or hifiman sundara? how much does it depend on source gear?
oh yes it has resolution, it has much more but it is really demanding on source, especially 600 ohm
would a schiit magni 3 be able to power these i have found alot of defferent answers i found that at 600 ohms the schiit magni 3 can push 215 mW into 600ohms but eould that be enough i am noob at all this so i am not sure
It's probably decent, yes. It won't get the most out of DT880 but will likely be reasonable starting point.
Its beyer like myer. (Like michael myers) Its a german brand. Its a mixture of the name of the company owner and the english word dynamic.
Sorry but I find it unacceptable to review audio gear and to have such bad sound in the video... the voice is tilted to the left and there is a very high pitched (about 10KHz more or less) noise coming from the left! It is unwatchable... I do not wan to be mean and I hope you do not misunderstand me. I'm just saying my observation in order for you to fix your takes! My 2c ...
Cayin ca- is pronounced as the ca- in california and cactus
Yep, as it is a German company it is pronounced "Baier Dinamik" 🤣
Not a topping fan. Poor quality, lots of returns and non existant CS. The most overhyped crap on the DAC market.
"Emphasized treble" means the tonal balance is far from pretty good. I bought a pair 2 years ago. They are a disaster next to the Beyer DT811s they replaced. I finally had enough of them and bought a pair of Sennheiser HD650s. They are somewhat bass-heavy, and also inferior to the DT811, but the midrange is correct. The only way I was able to tolerate the 880s was by removing the pads. They finally fell on the ground and died. Good riddance,
