    Recently I modded my DT880 with Brainwavz XL pads. Without EQ sounds very bass bloated, but when you EQ down the mid-upper bass and some treble peaks, DAMN...
    Soundstage is bigger, the headphone is turned in a bass monster but it's detailed at the same time... Wonderful.

    I'm using the DT880 600 Ohm with the Marantz HD-DAC1 and it's an amazing combo, unbelievable realistic sound with body and detail. Cannot rave it enough for the price.

      Disagree. K712 is a bloated headphone. They tried to add midbass to the phenomenal k702 and made it worse. And dt 880 600 runs cricles around k712 in a proper tube amp. Just my experience

    I really like this series. So few reviewers talk much about their gear and I find the insights about the equipment you know best helpful. I have a Focal Elex and an HD6XX that I pair with a Feliks Echo. Except for a bit of extra midrange timbre magic on the 6XX I find the Elex to be better in every other way. In your opinion, would the DT880 600 bring anything new to the party?

    • @soulfulfool
      @soulfulfool 3 місяці тому

      I did AB comparison between 6XX and DT880 600Ω, sound difference was so big that brain need a second to understand whats going on, when you switch from 880 to 6XX its feeling like sound gets dirty, highs stop flying & darkness has come. 6XX has sweeter tone but overall lacks in definition and resolution. 880 got energetic, fast and punchy sound, definitely brighter presentation that way it can create that crystal clear sound and interesting stage. I use Feliks Elise and got more power than I need for 600 ohm, I like them more than Focal Clear

    Good description of source matching. I think the shallowness of the earpads and the treble issue (first time I tried them I plugged them into a bad CD player output and immediately noped out haha) are the most problematic areas, when I rebought them I had to sell them again due to discomfort. What would be the next upgrade? T1? Or is it actually worth keeping even if you could get a T1?
    Any idea about 32/250 Ohm versions?
    Have you heard the Tygr 300R? I heard it and it's a less treble intense beyer with great imaging and iirc deeper ear pads but doesn't scale with higher end gear.

    • @ucbui2891
      @ucbui2891 11 місяців тому +2

      Not sure if this answer your questions, and my experience might differ from WaveTheory.
      To my ears, the T1 gen 2 is an upgrade version of the 880 (600ohm) in terms of technicalities (sound stage, imaging, etc.) with slightly tilted to warmer side, but it's still a Beyer. Someone might found it bright & harsh, to my ears it just sound smooth as butter, may be ears structure difference. You may or may not like it. I haven't heard the 1st & 3rd gen though.
      For the 880 (250ohm), I have owned one in the past, from my rusty memory, they sound thin compare to the 600ohm version. But it still sound like the 880, the difference won't be enough to make you change the opinion if you đon't like the 880 in the first place. I have asked someone I know about the 32ohm version, and he told me not to bother with it haha.
      As for the 600ohm, it worth keeping if you like neutral bright signature. I own the T1 gen 2, 880 (600ohm), and HD800s, everytime I take the 880 out, it always surprise me about it's capabilities compare to moderns cans.
      Oh, and I use Bifrost 2/64 + Valhalla 2 for all of these except the 880 (250ohm).

      990 is incredibly good for gaming even FPS such as Valorant. It's great for music and media too. One of the most balanced headphones I have and for the price is a no brainer. Add in incredibly high comfort scores and you have a winner. As long as you have an amp to drive them of course.

      I'll take the 600/650/6xx for rock, metal, hip-hop, EDM. The 880 for classical/soundtrack, jazz, and gaming/movies/tv. 990 is too sharp for me on an even wider range of sources than 880.

    If 600ohm ver. is so hard to drive why not get 250ohm version? Surely the difference can't be that big?

    • @wavetheorysound
      @wavetheorysound  11 місяців тому +7

      I haven't heard the 250. I can quickly explain the theory behind the 600. The diaphragm of a dynamic driver moves because it is attached to a coil of wire (voice coil) suspended inside a permanent magnetic field. When current flows through the voice coil one way, a magnetic field is produced that either agrees or disagrees with the permanent magnet's field. This (dis)agreement results in a force that moves the driver in or out. When the current direction changes, the magnetic field on the voice coil flips direction and the driver then moves the opposite direction. The strength of the magnetic field produced by the voice coil, and thus the amount of force that the two magnetic fields produce to move the driver, is directly proportional to the number of turns of wire in the voice coil. To get from 32 ohms to 250 ohms to 600 ohms, Beyerdynamic increases the number of turns of wire in the voice coil. Thus, the 600 ohm version has more magnetic force to accelerate the driver than either the 250 ohm or 32 ohm versions. The cost is the increased mass of extra wire material. But, Beyer has determined that the gain in force outweighs the cost of that gain in mass. Does this make sense?

Ya'll constantly go on about freedom but refuse to allow people to be themselves beyond your normative standards, choosing instead to parrot half formed ideas like "woke ideology" as if you could even define either word or understand what they actually mean.
