Oh, so THAT’S where the game budget went.
Lol
Honestly i think even if the budget was fair for everything else, the gameplay mechanic plans are gonna be the same it’s just gonna look a lil more polished
I don’t think the CG budget was that high, the animation is really limited and like a motion comic in some scenes. The animators just knew how to work around the limitations and stylize it with great lighting.
@@TortoiseMaximus people make good with what they had and the cutscenes were well made indeed!
It's a real shame because there was clearly effort put into the cutscenes, just a shame the gameplay couldn't back it.
This feels like it was supposed to be a movie but turned into a game
Yea it definitely does seem a lot better as a movie or animated series

@@krystalkemp4445 SnapCube's playthrough of Balan Wonderworld
Ikr, that’s legit the best part of the game imo
Watching this makes me so sad. Just... SO SAD! The team behind this clearly had an idea. A story. A _beautiful_ art direction! And they just... Killed it. They killed it with boring, tedious, one button gameplay that even children would get bored of. The dance scenes are weird, sure, but they would have been acceptable if they'd just made the rest of the game _actually_ enjoyable! I can't believe it. It genuinely breaks my heart. And worst of all I'm pretty sure Square was only going to give them one shot. How could they possibly have thought this was ok?
I feel like even the art direction didn't work out - they clearly were inspired by games like Mario 64, and made everything super colorful - but with no coherency behind it. The giant people in each level are a weird choice as well. In general, it feels like they wanted to make a kids game without actually knowing what kids enjoy.
@@Sakisasvictorianmask Imo the art direction seems consistent with previous works (Im talking like Nights) but I do agree a lot of it is weird. Thing is, none of that would have mattered if the gameplay was good! Plenty games have weird or outdated graphics but the fact that they are _fun to interact with_ is what keeps them as classics, cult or otherwise! So sad that Balan decided not to make their game fun and instead focussed their teams efforts on things like making 80 freaking costumes that mostly do the same thing...
I agree, I love the art style, and some of the characters/costumes are actually very appealing and unique in my opinion. But the game falls flat on it's own head because it's so badly executed. The fact it's a one button game is EXTREMELY infuriating, like you can't jump in a *platformer* because of a *power-up*? Honestly I would be open to waiting so they can fix this game. I genuinely think they have some good ideas that I wish I could have the option to experience without having all of the tedious, boring, and god awful gameplay.
@@conspiracypanda1200 "So sad that Balan decided not to make their game fun and instead focussed their teams efforts on things like making 80 freaking costumes that mostly do the same thing..."
What they should have done, aside from making the general gameplay fun, is make a much shorter list of abilities from the costumes, and have most of them act as cosmetic items. Like 8 costume choices per ability.
Yeah it’s depressing. This was to be the spiritual successor to Nights and the concept itself could work. The presentation is nice. I like the music and visuals and I’d be lying if I said the dance scenes didn’t make me smile but it really should’ve been delayed and reworked. And I’m with Slyfan. It would’ve been so much better to have a small set of costumes each with a full set of abilities instead of so many costumes that you constantly need to switch between. And I wish you could do so much more in Balan’s sections than just qte events. I wanna like this game and give it a fair shot but the nice presentation is just not enough to save it.
You gotta love the scaling of some of these problems. A girl is scared of getting attached to someone because of both her parents dying, and a guy lost a game of chess
His wife died
In the book, it’s not in the game, and that is a problem, especially in a game that tries to tell a story without words.
I personally think it's quite clever to have such wildly different scaling as what can seem meaningless to one could mean the world to someone else. I just really like this difference in scaling as it's pretty accurate in a way. My friend losing a game doesn't mean anything to me but could mean so much more to them and I love this portrayal
@@pendragongameart i cant believe they didnt put that detail in the game! He just seems like a douche here! Like god wtf man, so many strange choices

@@akito1555 Don’t feel bad. I enjoyed my time with Cyberpunk on the PS5 after 270 hours and didn’t want to let the typical social media shit storm form my own opinions when it came to Balan Wonderworld. Gladly forked out the $79 AUD without any regrets.
The game isn’t great but it isn’t a 3/10 title. The gameplay and controls needs work, but it is far from unplayable as I am just a few hours away from a platinum.
Despite having quality music and overall visual presentation, this is still a video game, so at best I’ll say this game deserves a pass as a 5/10 game.
@@cbgg1585 I would give more credit to the game and I actually enjoy playing the demo. But the price of $60 is what kills the game. It would be more loved if it was a $20 or lower. The price IS what killed the game

@@isabeldiaz6467 Wait, I thought this game was Square Enix.
@@max-lee1203 it is. But the creators of some Sonic games were included into the project. And this is how it turned out.
The part where he teared up really says a lot about him. I mean Balan is an entity that exists to aid those in need, but who helps him when HE is the one feeling depressed? He is a being that has lived for god knows how long but was probably never hugged or loved by anyone. He saves people but I don't think he ever truly bonded with them. The cutscenes prove that he is always there but never truly a part of whatever is going on.
And worse, the tie-novel claims that if Balan starts to care too much for humans could become corrupted like Lance.
Are y'all niggas serious right now?
I genuinely really like Balans design. I just wish that he wasn’t put into a game where it’s gameplay is just bad. I really hope that they remake the game, similar to a No Mans Sky type of thing.
This game has some much potential! Too bad they really rushed it.
Apparently the novel answers this question, as Lance is the one who created Balan when he realized he was becoming corrupted. So if Balan ever becomes corrupted he would likely do the same and create a new entity to take over his place.
Note: this is just what i gathered from the wiki i havent actually read the book
i feel like this has a lot more movie vibes than actual game vibes, maybe people wouldn’t immediately hate it if it was in a different form
Ik should have just been like a animated movie. I think they would have made more money not gonna lie

My Little Pony:Friendship is Magic and T.O.T.S. Tiny ones transport service
I don't think it would've been much better as a movie. I've seen a lot of people complaining about the story, myself included.
And what’s nice is that the animation doesn’t look like a cheap copy of a corporate Disney Movie
I love how the conflics go from 'i lost a game of chess' to 'my parents died and now I'm in a deep depression'
The parts I like about this game is the cutscenes and the music
Those, the story and symbolism are almost perfect, but a quick telling of there names would be welcomed. The costumes are a great idea although if they did more then one thing they would be even better. Its the controls, and all buttons do the same thing mechanic that keeps this game from being anything higher then a 6/10 to me.

This game would be good if they would revamp the gameplay it self also dancing is unnesecary and big also people was complaining cut scenes was without Voices and i get it because they literally made a book in collectors edition that translate cut scenes and that's kinda fishy and weird lol
In my personal opinion, somebody else said it best: a delay wouldn’t even save this game because the very core of the game is flawed. The core of the game revolves around “one gimmick per costume,” which makes gameplay very boring and limits the game’s potential.
Saving this game would require a restart in development and, most notably, a massive overhaul in its gameplay, and that alone would take a year or so to redesign an engine.

However, there’s a persistent corruption in Wonderworld and at first everyone, Balan and the two kids, think it’s Lance, specifically Lance influencing the other humans into falling further into despair and thus corrupting the landscape.
However, the more the two kids heal the others and fight Lance, the worse things get and finally when there’s no one left to heal, it’s revealed that Balan is the source of the corruption. As Wonderworld’s Maestro, his mental state directly influences Wonderworld, and this he finally falls into despair when he realizes he’s the reason behind everyone’s pain and, worse yet, he trapped two innocent kids in this crumbling and dangerous world. He finally goes Full Boss Mode and holes himself away in a tower of his own creation in an effort to contain the corruption and then it’s Lance who leads the two kids into helping Balan because, as a denizen of WW, he has stakes in its safety too.

If they fleshed this out into a movie or even a series in this kind of style, I would totally watch it. Straight off the bat the "Find your heart" premise doesn't appear cheesy or cliche like it normally would. Every one of these kids or even people like the farmer is struggling with the weight of a difficult or even traumatizing event and Balan's Wonderland feels like a place where you can recoup from that trauma in order to face it in the real world. You could do so much with that, and already it feels wholesome and empowering in a way beyond how bland and empty the gameplay actually is.
With the passion in the cutscenes, and the effort went into fleshing out this world, (there is an entire novel about this game's story) I do believe that this could be reworked into something much more meaningful and inspiring.

i think the usual and normal question has been asked too many times. so i'll just go ahead and ask the other question. WHY is there a novel for this?
I’m looking for Balan in these cutscenes since he tends to appear in them.
I kind of teared up at the cat one, but only because I have cats and them running into the road and getting hit is one of my absolute biggest fears.
my cat got ran over... Infront of my own eyes I couldn't do anything about it
We need someone like balan in real life ngl
Your UA-cam channel profile fits all too well with what you just said! I love it lol!

i cant believe that grill forgave the dolphin for maiming and almost killing her
Not everything is on purpose.
@@snivygreen2216 the end of the cutscene was the dolphin with red eyes staring evily back at the girl
@@spooderman6312 I think that was her perception of the dolphin
THE CUTSCENES NOT EXPLAINING ANYTHING DOES STUFF LIKE THIS AND I LOVE IT
@@spooderman6312 That was mosk likely her perception of the dolphin
This really should’ve been an animated series instead of a game.
20:05 Oh man this is like Jibanyan all over again
@@krystalkemp4445 Yep
Oh yeah lol
Balan doesn’t look right without the hat. They used the entire budget just to make dance cutscenes and make Balan look simpable when he doesn’t have a hat
The female simps are coming... Quick! Get the anti-simp weapons!
@@StickDisfigured Ok, you go left. I go right!
Ikr it was all just unnecessary
@@StickDisfigured Ha but I am a guy! That won’t work on me would it
Right? I feel like it would've been better if he didn't have a face reveal, or if his head looked like it fit on his body, because an anime-style humanoid head on a really exaggerated toony body just looks... _weird._
Ok but does anyone understand this story other than making people not depressed
Nope. No idea who the bad guy is or why they're doing what they're doing, why the protag is so cold to others in the intro, why Balan and the bad guy hide their true appearances, what their relationship is to each other, why Balan and the kids cry when they depart despite hardly having interacted at all, why a dance number of all things gets them over their issues, or why they thank Balan for helping them when the kids did all the work. None of this is explained.
There's a novelization that adds more context. I recommend checking it out after checking out the cutscenes.
@@MadameSomnambule Good to know that exists, thanks.
@@MadameSomnambule That's cool and all but major story context should have been in the actual game. Despite Balan being the icon, we really don't learn much about him or lance for that matter. Like what is he and why hide his true form, why does he want to help the kids, why are we helping these other people and what do the kids take away from their experiences? Without all that, the game's story feels very lacking, borderline unfinished with how much stuff is left out.
Kinda dumb we have to read the novel to know some of this... This game had enough time to develop at least some of the answers but it never even explain anything. And not many folks KNEW about the novel so rip...
It's utterly heartbreaking how badly this game turned out. I absolutely love the characters, the visuals, the world, the themes, it simply oozes that wonderful NiGHTS energy. Balan deserved so much better... I really hope he gets another chance to shine, but I doubt it, sadly...
The dancing scenes were definitely not necessary for the game lmao
Especially if they used like 1-3 of the same songs every time
Yeah that just make it repetitive and annoying.
Their thought process was probably "the male protag likes dancing a lot, maybe we can implement that" cause if we're being brutally honest here, the male protag had more put into his story than female protag's.
If only the gameplay had been this good. Missed opportunities
I'm so sad this game was bad, cause I really love Balan as a character.
5:45 NEVERMIND
what have they done to my boy......
I think you meant 50:45
I didn't notice till I watched a reviewer mention that one of the few things they enjoyed was trying to find balan in the cut scenes that I realised he was in the intro cutscenes for each character. He's the scarecrow in the farmers, he's swimming in the background for the dolphin level, he's one black silhouettes in the bug one and is winding a toy box in the girl and the cat. They seem to have put a lot of thought into the cutscenes. When I saw the intro animation while playing the demo I thought it looked amazing, till I actually started playing the game. It's such a shame as the cutscenes and concept had potential
Is anyone else thinking about Elsa when seeing Iben, or is it just me?
Nope! I thought of that too! Before I knew her story, I drew her singing a bit of Let It Go.
You’re not the only one

This... this is the plot of a magical girl anime
Yuss
Finally someone says it!!
I don't remember names, but I think I know at least 3 different magical girl antagonists that operate exactly like this
Honestly I love it
*cough cough* Madoka Magica *cough cough*
It's kind of a shame this game failed, it really did have the potential to do good.
I'm still confused as to whether the lyrics are gibberish or an actual language my brain is too dumb to recognise.
That's exactly what I was thinking while watching this and I still can't figure it out
It reminds me of the language from Klonoa or Loco Roco
It’s a made up language, but if you collect every single statue in the level they turn into English
@@saltypen3139 That‘s really cool.
its such a shame bc the high quality cutscenes are INSANELY cute and full of charm. same with the character designs. the gameplay however.... and we dont talk abt the dances
Damn it, they had so much going for it
The first cutscene is definitly the best of them all.
It seems to me Balan is there to help people of those who seem to struggle with sadness, anger and fear in one way or another.
Time to list all the meanings behind them even though you can probably figure it out!
Farmer Ted: Sadness due to him losing his crops and thus making him less motivated to work again. Seeing some of his crops still alive despite the storm makes him stronger for it.
Swimmer: Fear of an accident with her dolphin friend again, seeing as how she almost died from it. Once she sees her dolphin friend sad and apologetic, she's ready to start anew.
Bug Girl: Fear that people won't like her own interest of bugs, thus making her feel as she's trapped within her own cocoon. She finally transforms into a new self with new confidence so she can make friends.
Fly Guy: Anger due to constant failure of his dream to fly. He then gets a new idea that actually works.
Nature Woman: Fear that construction destroys the bird's homes. She finally reaches a compromise with the construction workers that benefits both man and nature.
Rich Cat Girl: Fear that she might lose her kitty from getting run over, and nothing she could do about it. Thankfully, the cat is safe and she's happy.
Chess King: Anger due to losing his title and popularity as a great chess player. He never learned how to be a good loser. He then sees the error of his ways and teaches kids how to play chess with a helping hand.
Ice Fiancé: Sadness to losing her family and not getting past grief. Her fiancé tries to help her, but she's created a literal wall so he can't help her. Finally, she's ready to let go and be happy with her fiancé by her side and marries him.
Jester: Fear of rejection, making him think the princess either loves him for him, or it's just all for show. He finally shows who he truly is and gets his happily ever after.
Painter: Fear of losing popularity due to her art not being as good as she had before and stresses out making it worse than the last. She finally lets go of that fear, and makes wonderful art again.
Fireman: Fear of dying, not knowing of the full danger of what could be given in his new position as a new recruit. He faces his fear and becomes a new hero.
Old Man: Sadness to cleaning his town by himself and no one helping him and making his job more stressful, thus making him invisible to the world. He gets the help and recognition he finally deserves.
This could've been such a good game had the gameplay been not terrible.
F it up Farmer Ted
This game's ending could've been happy and pretty, if it wasn't for the fact that, 1. The antagonist seemed to be corrupted like the other characters in the game, and when he was defeated (and ''saved) he was pulled into the ''shadow realm'', the poor guy, give him a break; and 2. Balan, you don't need more explanation.
Here’s their predicaments that I can interpret from the cutscenes, this is all I can see form the cutscenes
Farmer who lost all his hard work
Girl who got very injured by a thing she loves
Girl who loves something strange that people don’t like, isolating her
An inventor who’s creations constantly fail
A nature lover gets the things she cares about be destroyed and can’t stop it
Girl who’s cat DIES IN FRONT OF HER
A chess master loses a match and is now not the best at chess, losing status I guess and now frustrated at the game
Girl who’s LOVED ONES DIED and is scared that she isn’t gonna marry her fiancé
A dude who’s scared his crush isn’t gonna love him back
A painter who never seems to be satisfied with her own work and people don’t seem to like the art anymore or at least that’s what she fears
A firefighter who wants to save a young boy in a burning building but the flames are extremely terrifying and dangerous
A garbage cleaner (I don’t know what they’re properly called) who constantly has to work to pick up trash, people ignore him or straight up keep littering, his work is constantly being undone and nobody recognises his work or helps him and its taking a toll on him

Tbh when I first saw him on the thumbnails, I thought he was the villain lol
Balan Wonderworld is the definition of style (over substance?). The gameplay may be horrible, but the graphics music story and presentation are 100% on point.
Its not meant to be a Mario or a Pokemon, its meant to be an inspiring story about gaining courage and overcoming weaknesses in your heart. I see Balan and the kids dancing and bouncing and flourishing all over the place, and I feel like a magician, a daredevil a ninja, who has his shit together.
All right, I'm ready to save 60 $. Thanks for the upload

" Yeah, I am an awesome dancer, better than all the rest, and everyone loves and adores me - but it doesn't bring me happiness... what is this void I feel inside..? "
The sheer difference in quality between 1:01 and 5:10 is what kills me the most about this
