The cutscenes were so much better than the game that my first reaction to the gameplay was "just make a movie instead, guys."

Absolutely.
I think you're better off watching someone play it than actually playing it.

The plot seems more thought out and the characters have more to them then the gameplay honestly

But what about the A pose?
The game does not need a delay. It needs a complete rework.
Agreed.
Yeah, I can agree with this.
While I can respect your opinion on that decision you stated, the reason why I think the game needs more development time is so that way Square Enix, Yuji Naka, and Naoto Ohshima can fix the issues the game has in order for it to receive critical acclaim. Just stating this in a mature way.

I wonder how much did he really contribute
The game's 80+ costume mechanic killed any hope for it. The powerups are all basic and the character in base form can only jump. They made a 3D platformer but didn't give the player any movement options besides jumping.
The biggest thing to get right in a 3D platformer imo is making the character unique but fun to control. Sadly, they messed up the fundamentals.
This is the kind of thing were the developers should have looked at western devs when making a 3D platfomer.
eh, i dont mind it. It's very much . . . a gamecube game lol
Exactly this. 80 options that aren't even options half of the time. Make 20 costumes and make them more versatile. Pig already flutter jumps and ground slams why have the kangaroo?
the whole idea is to combine the costumes to create your movesets for the character

Oh I love Human Sonic and Nights.
It really is
I like the creature designs and Balan. But the humans look sooo incredibly meh, like something from a mobile game. Subway surfers or Farmville lol. The cringy mocap dance animations only make it worse.
The design reminds me of billy hatcher otc
If they do delay it, and I hope they do. They have to increase the run speed of the characters, because the way the running animation is, it looks like he's running fast, but his pace is so slow that it's jarring. Otherwise, I feel this game has great potential and I want it to succeed.
Funny how it’s the opposite with modern sonic games, he goes fast but his running animation is too slow
Delaying the game won't do anything because the core mechanics aren't very good. The game is heavily flawed. It doesn't feel like a Sega gwme because this game isn't creative, what separated this from a masterpiece such as Billy Hatcher is that Billy Hatcher rewarded the player with it's smooth control and reliance on the egg. The game didn't make the egg feel like a gimmick but the central gameplay. Balan Wonderworld feels like a generic platformer with it's ideas taken from other games. The gameplay is garbage and unfocused, it feels stiff and the worst part is some power upa don't even let you jump. On top of all this, the game doesn't look very good, doesn't feel good, cutscenes can't save your game, Sonic 06 is a better game than this, I would rather play Sonic Boom than this because atleast Sonic Boom had better graphics
I want a universal dedicated jump button
they* since both genders do that

The problem is the design of the game itself, like making all the button do one action

I’m betting this is a Bingo
It’s kind of like, they focused on the visual story telling and character designs but not the actual game mechanics. A bit like having an idea in your head but it’s not translated well in reality 🤷🏻♀️ there is no need for 80 power ups, a lot will do the same thing as others, maybe cut them down and just have them as themed costumes depending on the level theme, I don’t know I’m not a game creator lol, definitely needs to move faster, and add some other functions, like with those Tim’s 🤷🏻♀️ they follow you around all the time in the levels, let’s do something with them lol I just want mr Naka to succeed with this xx
Some attack enemies and some bring items but it's not really obvious
The main characters need to be more fun to play. the most important thing about 3D platformers is having the character feel fun. (mario, SA1 and SA2 sonic, hat kid from a hat in time.)
In some game genres gameplay is more important than storyline if the devs have a basic storyline. It can definitely use some tweaks and I know for sure it’ll be a cool game
Also the intro cutscenes look great...but that’s really all there is to them, narratively speaking, they do a rather poor job telling you what’s going on, and once you’re in the actual game, they throw you even more stuff that makes the story all the less understandable.
That intro cutscene better have been shortened for the sake of the demo or something (which in on itself sounds weird as heck), because the way it is right now, it’s just all flash and not much else, so you can very much completely skip it and not really lose anything regarding the story, as it doesn’t really answer much at all
Some of the Tims help you by distracting/stunning enemies and also building that tower when you feed them but beyond that yeah they could do a bit more I agree.
If for instance with that Dragon Suit that makes you unable to jump they made it so the Tims had a way to help get you around that weakness a la Bionic Commando, that could have been a plus.
I was excited for this game before I realised it was another sonic forces where the CGI trailers hype you up and then you’re filled with disappointment when you see and play it. I do think the story has a lot of potential

The only Sonic games that came out in 2010-2020 that the trailer build up hype and didn't turn out to be what the actual product is is really Forces and maybe Generations. The CGI trailers for Generations, although the game is good, mislead a lot of people thinking there will be more of a story than what we had and it wasn't even in the actual game, and all trailers for Forces makes it seem like it will be very serious and epic adventure and it didn't deliver.

@I'm Self Aware nice you two guys hating a game because it they have a story, a good gameplay, a good artstyle, huge openworld with many places to explore and very polished. No one cares that you hate popular games just keep your opinion to yourself
One of the main issues is that you have only one single action at anyone time and those actions are locked behind costumes, actions as simple as jumping... Whatever ability your costume has that’s all you can do, if you want to jump you need a jumping costume... This is not fun, the appeal of power up costumes is that you power UP, you get EXTRA functionality, not a complete replacement that limits you to one single action, and the entire game is based around that so to change that would mean they would have to rebuild the entire game! This is just one of the issues though, I’m not even going to get into how the game looks like a first time devs project on Steam green light using pre made assets he bought and a dance animation that he pasted onto all the NPCs and the fact that keys respawn and are right next to the thing they unlock.... The game is incredibly poorly designed and a delay won’t help it needs a complete redo, though they won’t but I wish they would because the CGI and theme and core idea on paper sounds great. It’s a proper shame. I mean imagine MARIO 64 but all 3 of his jump types are locked behind costumes you have to equip, and his punch, and his butt bash, and his back flip.... Would that be fun? No, that’s why they didn’t do it, so why did team Balan do it? You can say it’s a “puzzle platformer” but that doesn’t make it any better, it’s still set up like a platformer.
There's a power up that lets you double jump
@@cornellbannister4012 a power up or a costume?

I'll say it now, why and how they screw it up? With Square Enix as a publisher i thought they could make the game they wanted, without the limitations Yuji Naka had to suffer on his time on Sega, how did this happened? The game looks like a cheap indie game from a rookie development team, was that the problem? I don't want this game to fail in any sense because the ideas presented here are so intriging, especialy Balan's design which feels like Nights in a good way but it feels that, without a proper delay, the game will be doomed to fail.
I pray this game gets delayed for a year.
They gave him too much freedom with nothing to keep him grounded, just like what happened with the other 3 failed solo flying auteurs (Keiji Inafune, Hideo Kojima, Yu Suzuki). He has flown too close to the sun with his newfound freedom and his wax wings are softening in the heat, the real question is if he has time left before he too falls victim to the Icarus Flight.
@@KiraSlith I feel like hideo kojima doesnt really fit there, sure he made something different but the result was still technically competant and people could play and enjoy the gameplay. and subjectivley speaking there were quite alot of people who did like death stranding. thats just far less true for shenmue 3 or might no.9

You know how Sakamoto forced the Other M team to design the game with a sideways Wiimote controller because he wanted it to control like a SNES game despite being 3D? The way the main character of Balan plays exactly like the children in NiGHTS Into Dreams makes me wonder if something similar might've happened here, with Naka holding back the team because he wanted it to adhere to the design sensibilities of something designed decades ago.
If so,then that's not good. I mean,I don't mind a game that takes more inspiration form NiGHTs,rather than Sonic, but it needs to be updated for modern times.
I’ll be honest when you said the game was $60 I didn’t believe you I checkedThe E shop and you were right there’s no way I’m paying that much for this game
The fact their necks/heads don't ever move in any of the animations basically, terrify me.
Tweaking? That too minor a verb for what this game needs. It's like all the Mooney went to the cuteness and nothing was left for anything else. The worst jumping mechanics I've encountered in modern times. A nonsensical powerup system. Bare bones hit detection, animation and lightning that makes the world worried come off lifeless. I've played indie 3D platformers with more polish like A Hat in Time which, for all is technical faults, when it works as intended, looks better than this.
As soon as I heard this game had eighty powerups, I got nervous, how on earth wrote all these be fleshed out and balanced? Even in a more open plan level design?
And Square thought they should put a demo of this out? We knew it before but this confirms it, Square-Enix knows jack about platformers.
square enix really just slapped a jump button into the controls and said "ah yes, platformir"
I feel like they put all their effort into the Cutscenes. It’s the best part
That demo is like cyberpunk 2077. edit: hopefully they can fix it and make this game good as possible
I was about to say the same thing lol
Yeah, but at least this time people are honest about how the game plays. Back then, people who played the Boom demo at events made up some ridiculous lies to make that game sound better than it was till it was too late.
This game still may have a chance.
You’re really reaching with this one
This is just plain false.
Sonic 06 is so bad it’s good. Cyberpunk is just bad. This is just... REALLY bad.
Atleast it has a great artstyle.
Well, I like the designs of the costume, creatures, and Balan, but the human designs aren’t my cup of tea.
Speaking as someone who's dumb enough to like the demo, I honestly agree with you.
But what I appreciate the most from your video is that despite the issues you have with the demo, it's coming from a place of concern and wanting the game to be good as opposed to most people who insist on tearing into it just for the sake of tearing into it. That's the big issue I have with most people's reception of Balan so far, they tend to go way more heartless about their hate than is really warranted and in the case of some people (*coughNintendoLifecough*) just refusing to acknowledge any good it has or complain about elements that don't really matter.
Yuji Naka accomplished making a 90s Sonic Team Game, but he failed to realize there was a reason nobody's made games like his in 20 years.
He needs to get with the times and make with the Quality of Life Upgrades.
Multi Button Play, condense the Powerups, make it happen!
Problem with a delay is that it doesn't address the core issue. The problems that plague the game are simple to understand, but very crucial to deliver a satisfying experience.
The game is so lacking in the fundamentals of fun game design and direction, and is padded by fluff that just isn't fun, and I just think whoever are in charge of this game don't have what it takes to make it good. Glitches are one thing, just not having a basic grasp on what a fun game is can't be fixed with time.
T-posing... is the devil. I’m glad players like you speak out about the game and it’s flaws. To give a sign of improvement.
It's a little too late for that. Yep. This game is going to get slaughtered hard.
Haven’t played the demo and saw bits of you playing it Sam.
Honestly, for the positive I love the character designs. So bright and colorful and full of personality. The design reminds me a lot of Nights which is obvious who made this,
Speaking of characters this is kinda what I expect the humans would look like in a Sonic game like Unleashed did. That Saturday morning cartoon vibe, funny as they’re design by Japanese artists.
Heck! Even the Protagonist Leo looks like what Sonic would look like if he was human. Especially with the hair. Much better than the “Sonic the Kid” reject design from the latest Sonic YT video.
And the level design is spot on too. How imaginative it is and how much I want to explore.
That said I agree with what most people say. The running speed is too slow and awkward to look at.
The Costumes are neat power ups, but I don’t think having all of the same ability is a good idea. Which is a darn shame as they look interesting. Also, the characters need more basic abilities aside from jump.
Heck even Mario does more than jump and has better costume power ups despite the small amount.
This has great potential, but currently executed poorly by the demo.
I know he can do better and I hope they do delay to fix the game up more. I want to get it and it will be a shame if it turns out poorly due to not fixing the core issues of the game.
Nah, this game needs more than just a delay. It needs to be redone from the ground up. It's just so... ugh

-Abilities are shallow and only do 1 thing
-boss follows Mario 3 hit battles, BORING
-your run speed is slow
-changing outfits is slow

Balan Wonderland is shaping up to be a better cartoon than a video game
Personally, I'm wondering how much of a delay would be enough to fix this game. Yeah, they could definitely fix issues like the boss t-posing or crashes or animations in a matter of months, but a lot of issues that people bring up would require a heavy overhaul of the game's design. I don't think that the overall sluggish pacing, the shallow one-button mechanics, the powerups being situational, the amount of backtracking needed in some instances, the overly simplistic level design, and the QTE minigames could all be fixed in less than a year.
Maybe I'm in the wrong with all this; I don't have an especially deep understanding of how game development works.
Another issue is we don’t know how big and competent Balan Company’s dev team really is, and what was the budget of this game, and for how long were they making this game, no sure if Square will be fond of delaying the game for more than a year, but as of now my overall impression on the demo is that it almost looks like the reason it turned out this way, is because the only ones who were testing the game were the devs themselves, and the devs look like they have not really played video games in years and assumed everything was still the same as many years ago, this game needs a massive delay and rework
To fix everything would take starting over from nearly the beginning. They can fix the speed of the characters an potentially he camera. Everything else are issues with fundamental gameplay design which would require a serious overhaul from nearly the beginning since that would effect level design, controls and boss fights.
@@dustymcwari4468 yea you get a 90s game aesthetic but you also get 90s game mechanics.

The game is i feel is fundamentaly flawed, and not sure if a delay is enough, they based the game too much on the costume power ups, and the actual character is useless and not fun to play.
Not to mention the power ups tend to be lacusters...take the rabbit and dragon for expample.
The rabbit lets you float a bit in the air, a very small upgrade to something a normal character can do, jumping
And while the dragon spits out fire balls, it actually stops you from jumping, not to mention the range of the fire balls is very short, making it more of a downgrade then a power up.
Personaly i think they need to rework the core game design itself.

When I saw the freezing, I thought it was my own console. I really really want this game to succeed.
I can agree with this and the hub world wasn't what I was expecting (Or maybe that's just the demo hub world)
My idea of hub world was actually that stage area Balan preforms in, curtains cover the doors and with each complete level a new curtain rises to a new door. But completed levels also opens up more of the theater for the player to access. Levels counted for parts of the day, after two to three levels you reach the end of the day and leave the theater to go home. This allows the player to explore the character's hometown/City (As far as they can go for any child by themselves) before going home and getting to face whatever is upsetting them at home.
But each time the character becomes more and more reluctant to go home until eventually a cutscene plays showing Balan finding the character asleep in one of the chairs. After finding them, Balan has a look of confusion that turns to sympathy. He pulls out a blanket from nowhere and drapes it over the player character before cutting the lights, silently exiting the room. From then on the cutscenes after those levels show either the player doing activities with Balan....or on the rare occasion, a police officer putting up "Missing" posters on the walls outside the theater with the player's face.
That's just me tho.
I'm fine waiting like 2 years for this game to be the best that it can be
“A delayed game is eventually good, a rushed game is bad forever.”

A lot of game Company should learn form this quote.
Edit: Nope this game is just bad don’t waste your money on it. It needs a complete rework.
Tell that to Duke Nukem Forever, he's often misquoted he said a delayed game CAN eventually be good a rushed game is bad forever. Sometimes the base premise is so flawed or the tech can't hold the idea enough that you just have to let it go. I hope that's not the case for this game but I think it needs more than a one year delay, it needs an overhaul.
@@Richforce1 I'm with u on this one.
They need to change the character animations, optimizations for each platform (both for each console and also pc), go over the graphics again so that they can look good even if they are at a lower resolution, fix timings such as when the camera goes to black so that the boss t-pose and any others don't appear, etc.
If they change the character speed, they also have to rework the stages as well to suit that. With the added time, they could also modify the character speed/animations per costume. Oh and not to mention the button bindings. Every button for a single action? I am with Sam on this one. Is this game for years 1-5 or something? Even at Kindergarden kids nowadays probably play with tablets and phones due to the increasing use of tech. They'll learn to use the buttons for what they are needed. Didn't we all for the games we played when we were young?
So, yeah, this game needs to be delayed and the feedback received from the people playing the demo needs to be seen.

The demo was good, the only problem i had was the speed of the characters and a few animations, but the level design is prety good, does need some polish though.
I agree with you but this game needs more than just a LITTLE polish
@@argo9721 Looking back on it, you’re right, it needs way more than just a little polish.
This feels like a horror game.
the NPCs just standing there dancing feels really creepy..
I didn't get any crashes on the Switch version, but I did get a few instances where everything went a singular hue for a few seconds.
This game has SO much potential. I love the message about balance (You have Balan and Lance as the two Nightmaren-esque creatures). But it definitely needs more time to be worked on. It doesn't help that Naka got saddled with a terrible dev team.

It did not get delayed .....
@@Merchantic unfortunately so.
well, I think that this can be dumbed down to "we'll see if Naka & Co. will listen to feedbacks and address the various concerns".
aside from that, fans can wait. managers can't. because money. so much for the wonderworld/dream/fantasy thing.
Man, Sonic creators probably have some kind of curse. When was the last time they made a good game? A decade ago?
this game honestly feels like shovelware
This game had a lot of potential. It hurts so much how the gameplay felt in the demo...
I'm here after watching Dunkey's video; what a shame i remember being very interested when watching the trailers.
4:00 Lol my joke got the spotlight when the game froze. On a serious note though, I completely agree with everything you said, this game has a ton of potential and I really hope they don't just throw it out the window.
I'm probably the only person who actually liked playing the demo. I agree with the slow movement speed and the single button controls, but despite that, I actually had a blast with the demo, and I played the Switch version.
I will say that I won't mind if they delay the game because I truly want this game to shine as bright as it can.
Yeah me too the demo is cool
“Every button does the same thing!”
Classic Sonic games be like
Nah classic sonic games had you do other actions with button combinations or double presses spin attack, twin spin attack(insta shield), shield abilities, drop dash, flight, glide etc this game is just one button presses
But you use still one button in 2D classic Sonic even if you press it twice or just with a combination. But it doesn't work in 3D.
"Press the action button to ___________"
@@cin2110 nope, they were all on jump
No it’s that you can only do one thing
Honestly I'm glad people are calling for a delay, and that Sam made a video about it.
As the demo currently is, it feels like a rough draft right now for a game that could be good.
But it seriously needs a hard delay.
Not a soft "let's move the release date a few weeks", I mean it needs at least a good few months to rework and figure out certain aspects.
It's a new IP, so something like this should be expected.
I just hope Square Enix does the one thing they're really good at, delaying games. And gets rid of the release date until the game is a lot better.
If they want the game to be a success of course, or they can just sell the game at a loss as it's currently going.
Perhaps they could get the game out by October, but I don't think they should be setting any release dates right now.
They might also need to hire some more experienced staff as well, since I'm not sure if the current devs are experienced enough admittedly.
Well even though the internet has turned on this game to some degree, there's still those of us that want to see it succeed despite feeling disappointed with the demo.
It's up to Naka, Oshima, and the folks at Square to see this one through.
Yeah, it sucks to see people hate on this game as if they were scammed by a Kickstarter... no idea why everyone loathes it for being painfully mediocre with kinda bad controls (gameplay wise), it's not like expectations were high or there is s faith to be restored, like with Mighty N. 9.
*But the future refused to change*
How disappointing. It seemed so promising.
Edit: the lackluster animations were especially disappointing. The cutscenes were so high quality. To see the actual game like this is insane.
Also that fucking Balan "Gameplay" is just so, so disappointing. A quick time event, really? It's so half-assed and could've just been a NiGHTS gameplay insert if possible, but no, we get a visual representation of a fucking stroke.
Is this just a thing with games developed by or with Sonic Team leaders? Unpolished games?
Wha-why this always happen with this man
I think naka was heavily involved in Nights in to dreams and it turned out great. But yeah another misstep could kill this man's reputation.
@maltese 0217 Talking about glitches I get, but using a debug mode to see any games assets is of course going to break the illusion of it being a full environment. They are out of bounds for a reason, the background has to end somewhere.
@maltese 0217 The classic games had only a few glitches and of course the game is going to have that if you use debug Mode. As we talk about Sonic Adventure yes the collision can be sometimes really weird but it's at least better in the dreamcast version than in DX and Sonic Adventure 2 improved actually that. So the glitches in SA2 are less noticeable. Also Mario 64 has glitches but nobody calls that game unpolished or bad and Super mario sunshine has also a few problems and also more than 64 if you ask me.
So yeah that was more the time where developers had to figure out how 3D works.
You have to really go out of your way for super Mario 64 glitches.
@@magicjohnson3121 so do you have in SA1 and 2 unless it's the DX version of adventure 1.
Balan Wonderworld definitely needs to be delayed. Maybe for another year, and also maybe take the price down to $30-40, that may seem like a reasonable price.
This game seems to not be focused at all, the 80+ is a good example, it NEEDS to be delayed, what happened during development
Share this video around, get the news around, make sure the devs know people, we need to pull a Sonic Movie
This game needs at least a 2 year delay to go back and just redo everything from scratch
1 year
Yuji Naka is one more victim of the super producers' curse!
the game just has a heavy aura of the devs and Yuji Naka feeling out of their element in terms of game development and the expectations of players nowadays. it wouldn't be so bad if this isn't LITERALLY yuji naka's final shot at this sorta thing.
I have to wonder why they needed to make 80 powerups to begin with. Feels like putting too much effort into areas that don't need it.
@@manuelalbertoromero9528 Because Yuji Naka wants to flex his creativity skills as much as he can
@@heroicgangster9981 that’s unprofessional tho, you gotta know when somethings too much, it’s like he created this game wanting kids to understand there’s a balance in life, but ironically the development of the game itself seems to lack a lot of balance
@@heroicgangster9981 That's an extremely misguided sentiment at best. Restraint is vital to the creation process. Quality over quantity is what you should strive for. One great idea will always be better than a thousand mediocre ones.
@@manuelalbertoromero9528 The idea is that you can combine costumes into a set and make different playstyles based off your costume.
Cool idea, but it seems square didn't give Yuji Naka the resources to flesh out the rest of the game
Spoiler: They didnt
That character movement speed is inexcusable, especially with Naka involved

The t-pose isn't a bug, he's just asserting his dominance
the cutscenes make this look like it should be a movie rather than a game
I don't want this game to fail. The designs look amazing and fun! I want this game to succeed so bad, I hope it gets fixed
Trust me delaying it isn't going to make it better. Yuji Naka's design philosophy is just ancient lol basically looked at nights gameplay and decided not to change much or evolve it like he should have. when you're looking at a 3d game from 1996 and not changing much from it it's going to look bad in 2021
This game plays nothing like NiGHTS though... 🤨 dafuq are you on, this is a 3d platformer, NiGHTS is a 2.5D flying game.
The trailers made me think this was a survival horror game....I was suprised to find out it was a 3d platformer
It's nice to see you be critical about stuff.
Person who played the switch version here. My time was... "fun."
My main complaint was the slow speed mixed with the large worlds and the 1 hit kills. Not a winning combination. Traveling and exploring for collectables is so draining, especially with the fact that I could only JUMP with certain suits. And if you happen to let a single (respawning) enemy touch you, it's an eight mile hike back and a lot stop for a replacement suit to get back to where you're going.
This is why you don't set a high bar and make promises you can't keep. The end results, no matter how polished, might still remain unfinished.
0:11 He's asserting dominance.
