Would suggest everyone check out Besiege Bots, it's probably the most technical of all the combat robot game communities but it's well worth learning. Especially if you like destruction, hits feel absolutely visceral in besiege, and it's to my knowledge the only combat robot simulation right now that simulates all aspects of damage based on forces overcoming the strength of structural connections not some variation of a health bar applied to components.

I agree, I would recommend it to anybody who wants to try a robot combat video game. Besiege works rather well for simulating robot combat.

Can confirm, as someone who has watched Summer Slammathon 2020 several times, Besiege Bots is great. The damage physics (while a bit weird due to game mechanics) is some of the most realistic stuff in a robot combat simulator. Not to mention that yes, when a spinner hits in Besiege Bots, it HITS.

An awesome video about the surprising amount of Robot Combat video games! Honestly the cancellation of the Gamecube Battlebots game is still sad as while Robot Arena 2 I still feel is better, this would have been an amazing console alternative! Happy to see some of my own footage in here and hopefully this video lets some people know about some of the video game options we presently have 😃
To add just a bit more: Robot Arena 2 is still the choice for most of us, with even notable (albeit unofficial) mods bringing Battlebots and Robot Wars robots into the fray, which Skorpios actually made it to the final 4 of my own personal tournament on UA-cam 😄The DSL mod still has a small but active scene of competitions also.
There are also a few modern day options that came after RA2, the first being its failed successor Robot Arena 3! Its unfortunately very buggy and struggles in ways that Robot Arena 2 didn't in terms of simulating that robot combat feel. The other two I feel are of note are Pitbots which aims to essentially create a modern Robot Arena 2 with an easy to grasp builder and the final game of note being Robot Rumble 2, with possibly the most in depth builder the game has beeen extremely impressive! Those final two are still in alpha/beta stages at the moment of development however.
Again awesome video and hopefully Battlebots one day gives us a video game! 💜

I used to play Robot Rage online back in the day. It was hosted on miniclip and was a pretty fun pvp game. It had the feature of limited battery with no time limit, so a lot of the strategy involved outlasting the other player and then shoving them off the side when they ran out of battery. The disk thrower weapon was also pretty cool.

What I'm visualizing is a game similar to Crossout with custom parts and more internal structures and systems. With structural parts that allow more damage to pass through the lower their durability while still providing support depending on the damage and weld points.
Off the top of my head I can see custom weapons applying damage type (puncture, slash, impact, fire, etc), mass, speed, hardness/toughness, durability, langth/radius, acceleration, torque, force distribution, self damage, direction path, power source, thickness, cost (Armored Core 6 scoring), vector angle, self damage, deflection, and modules (gear boxes, motors, sensors, limiters, couplers, springs, etc).

Favorite game? Probably one of the Monster Hunter games. Most of them are really fun and have a great (albeit extremely basic) plot, along with fun mechanics. If I had to pick one, I’d honestly say Rise, mostly due to the combat flow and fun wirebug shenanigans.
As for a BattleBots game, I’d love something like Robot Rumble 2 with some of the bending physics of Robot Arena 2, and maybe some individual part-breakage if possible. And while difficult to program, something like a “shock transfer” gimmick would be cool, like if plastic parts could absorb the shock of hits better, but requires more material to be an effective defense, while metals don’t need to be as thick to keep from weapons piercing through, at the cost of lower shock resistance and a higher chance of the part breaking, or the internals getting rattled. I’d also love to see if there could be a “sticking” mechanic for if a spinner pierces through another bot, like with SawBlaze getting its weapon stuck in everyone’s top plate.
I know this is asking for a lot, but this is just a list of things I’d like to see.

    • @janickjorgensen2964
      @janickjorgensen2964 5 місяців тому +3

Might want to check out Besiege Bots if you want actual break force based damage system, actual structures and more individual parts. Doesn't look exactly like real life robots but it's the only one right now with break force based damage not some variation of parts having health bars so it can just do everything you mentioned there.

@@johnnygoldman5495 I did not know that. I’ve seen footage of RR2, and parts made of plastic/rubber (unless stupidly dense) just seem to fall apart at the lightest touch. Thank you for the clarification.

Gmod - Most theatrical, very good presentation. I dislike the building, but i am also dumb
RR2 - Best building to make robots look real, lots of thought put into the game.
Scrap Mechanic - Easiest building. Physics can get a little silly, but the robots come out fun
Besiege - Most competitive, best destruction physics, hard to do good.
Never touched Roblox. RR2 pretty much blows RA2 away. I have never played the robot wars games, bout i doubt they are better than anything on my list

As far as arenas keep the Vegas them and have a battle in that new sphere shaped arena. The crazy visuals place. They could get the place to pay for it to be featured in the game. Also I think having a fight on a bomb dropping facility like in Fallon Nevada, where the military does top gun. The bombs hitting the ground would shake and rattle the arena, and have fun interference with the bots fighting..

Favorite game? I’m more into shoot em ups like DoDonPachi series, but if I have to choose a favorite, it was mentioned in this video, Robot Arena 2. I was blessed to receive the physical cd when I was a kid from my parents back then, and I spent so much hours as a kid playing with the bots, and making my own….less than stellar creations. Then in my teenage years I discovered the mods for the game for other bots, DSL 2.0, and custom arenas, and sank even more time messing around with all the resources. Even as an adult I would pop it on again every now and again when I get the time to relax and fight some robots. This game was a big influence for me.

I would like to see you guys do a video on Robot Rumble 2.0. It is a free to download game with a lot of great features, including pneumatics, customizable shapes and chassis', lots of motor options for all weight classes, and lots of maps to download off of discord. The learning curve for the game is a little steep and (to me) requires video tutorials to understand it, but overall it is a great game to make any robot you can think of. (Also on the discord is a LOT of bots from the real life show, including Skorpios.)

  • @ConstantlyDamaged
    @ConstantlyDamaged 5 місяців тому +3

    Features I'd like to see:
    - Why stop at 250lbs? I want to build ant-weight and beetle-weight bots, or why not a class with no weight limits? Size limits instead of weight limits? Go crazy!
    - Tournament mode (all the normal rules of the various weight classes apply)
    - Anything goes mode (you want to mount chains as weapons? what about a gun? unlimited weapon-tip speeds?)
    - Crazy arenas (low grav, higher grav, build your own)
    - Game modes with multiplayer (capture the flag, protect the VIP, push the cart, capture points)
    - Ranked play, where you have to build and maintain a bot, compete for sponsors, etc
There's literally so much opportunity in this that the ideas are matched only by the budget and creativity of whomever makes it.

It's a stretch to call it a "robot combat" game in the same vein as these, but Base Wars for the NES was pretty fun. It's robots playing baseball, but whenever you would be tagged out instead the runner got into a fight with the basebot which was the actual meat of the game. You could buy weapons for your team (and baseball-related upgrades like pitching guns and super bats), and it was fun and surprisingly smooth for a NES fighting game but horribly balanced. E.g. the unicycle bots were 100x better than the tank or hovercraft bots because its default special attack could move you across the screen and also stunlock. Anyway, this video brought the memory back so thought I'd mention it!

Robot Arena 2! Amazing game that has stood the test of time and can even be seen as a prototype BeamNG Drive. BTW, The BeamNG model is in my opinion the way to go. Realistic physics, infinite modability a la Robot arena 2 and a thriving multiplayer scene. While I think a licensed Battlebots game would be amazing, it would probably have some compromises out of the box to be affordable. Then again a game that responds well to mods but is affordable like Wreckfest (Which is literally Battlebots with cars) should be the sweet spot. EDIT Bone Dead Robotics also has its origins in RA2 as well

Think the GBA version of Extreme Destruction has been done a bit dirty here. Graphically, it's not great - but just cramming a full physics engine into a GBA game is frankly wizardry. It was light-years ahead of the other handheld robot combat games!

You'd think in the days of e-sports and sports games making bank even with watered down releases year after year that a game extensively covering the ABC/Discovery era of robot combat on popular consoles would print money. Looks like the GC game came closest in its day but that was killed in the cradle before a fully polished version could be released. One of the biggest missed opportunities in gaming, even for a relatively niche sport.

Plenty of fan made unlicensed games or communities within games out there too, though I can only really talk about the one I'm involved with. which is Garry's Wars, using Garry's Mod to run things. We run tournaments most weekends, and there's been a lot of work put in over the years to make things somewhat realistic whilst also being fun, to the point where the near two decade old game engine is creaking a bit from what we've done to it. It does have it's limitations though admittedly, given the engine and the FPS interface, but with time, experience, and a lot of patience you can pull off some pretty good and imaginative looking robots.

Dang, Robot Arena 2 was my jam back in 6th grade! Also, I appreciate that you didn't mention Robot Arena 3, that might as well not exist in my book.
But as to my favorite games:
    - Outer Wilds is #1 by a longshot. Space exploration environmental puzzle game where your goal is to uncover the secrets of an ancient alien civilization that predates your species. Very knowledge based instead of progression based, so you can only play it once. Therefore, highly advised you don't Google it and just play it if the concept seems interesting and you can handle lots of reading (there's no voice acting).
    - Then Frostpunk. Survival city building game that pits you against the elements in a desperate bid to remain standing as the last city on Earth as everywhere else gets consumed by snow the likes of which hasn't been seen since the Ice Age. Bleak, but beautiful game.
    - Rain World is #3 - survival platformer where you are a cute little slugcat in a world full of things that want to eat you, electrocute you, swarm you, stab you, drown you, and many more fun ways to die. And then, if you make it to the end of the cycle and haven't found shelter yet, you must contend with *the rain*. At first the screen starts to darken, then it begins to rumble. And rumble. Harder and harder. Until if you're outside, the rain begins. It begins as a light drizzle that then quickly picks up into a torrential downpour the likes of which will crush your fragile slugcat bones, and you will die a very rainy death. And if you're inside without having found a real shelter, you get drowned out. Very fun, but brutally difficult.

Currently you've got Robot Arena 2 which is also old but has great mod packs. And then there's Robot Rumble 2 which is still in development. All on pc, none on console
Dunno if you mention these in the video but they are fun games. Absolutely need a Battlebots game but you've got to pay to make the game and pay Battlebots for the licence for the bots and that gets pricey fast. Then you're talking about Battlebots fans that play video games, sadly not a massive audience.

The “Brother show” Robot wars has a bit more video game and a ton of fan content like robot arena (2 specifically) and robot rumble 2 which is still not finished a main release on steam. But If battleBots makes a game it would probably be 1 a simple game that just has famous bots from the show. 2 a how to learn robotics and not have any real fighting. 3 both like RR2. Or they don’t make a game and instead just make robot kits. In my opinion if any event wants to make a video game on combat robots it would probably be from NHRL. Btw TOTK best game and should have won GOTY
