    We booked this excursion after seeing this video and it was an incredible experience! We went a week ago and were treated to seeing many whales breaching on our way to and from Molokini. If you go during whale season (November through April) you will see a lot of whales as well! Highly recommend doing this!

    I have enjoyed Molokini and the Turtle Town trip years ago. Go to the Big Island and snorkel at the Captain Cook monument and Two Step Beach, these were the best snorkeling in Hawaii for me.

    is the water still warm in the end of january?

    • @KaimanaConservation
      @KaimanaConservation  Місяць тому

      The water temperature varies seasonally, but not so dramatically that most folks visiting from non-tropical areas can tell. Winter waters are mid-to-upper 70s, and summer ranges from high 70s to low 80s. :)

    So sad that Molokini has degraded so.
    There used to be CHOKE uni, urchin, lace coral and fan coral :( :(
    We'd take a loaf of bread into the water and you'd be surrounded by fish. Our guests loved it.

    • @KaimanaConservation
      @KaimanaConservation  3 роки тому +1

      Yes definitely! The combined affects of climate change, overfishing, and large tourism operators has drastically changed the ecosystem at the crater.
      Every summer the bleaching corals are enough to make you cry 😢
      That being said, I think the area is still a fantastic place to experience Maui's incredible coral reefs. Especially if they haven't snorkeled on hawaii before (or ever been in the ocean before!).
      And I love advocating for local, family-owned, and small sustainably-conscious tourism operators. Which is why I traveled Maui Snorkel Charters 😁

    Can I snorkel here if I can’t swim ? I have done it in the past but it was close to shore

    • @KaimanaConservation
      @KaimanaConservation  2 роки тому

      Because Molokini Crater is a marine reserve, you would not be permitted to put your feet down on the reef or rocks. That being said, most boat tours that go to this area can provide flotation devices (pool noodles, float belts, boogie boards, etc.) for you so you can enjoy the view from the surface.

  • @VannidaVlogs
    @VannidaVlogs 3 роки тому

    Typically, how deep are the waters chosen to snorkel at?

    • @KaimanaConservation
      @KaimanaConservation  3 роки тому +3

      Another great question! The depths shown in this snorkel trip (to Molokini Crater specifically) vary drastically depending on the site. The first and second stops were only a few feet deep at its shallower point, and then gradually dropped to about 30-40 ft. The famous "Back Wall" spot is very different and pretty atypical, because it's a vertical snorkel along a sea-cliff. So this depth is roughly 300ft deep. Most snorkel sites along the island shoreline are typically between 10-30 feet (similar to Turtle Town - spot 4 & 5 in the video).
      The most important thing to remember is that on a snorkel charters like this one, you control your limits. If you only want to snorkel in the shallow sites, then you can! It's your trip after all :) But your captain and crew are there to support you if you choose to explore outside of your comfort zone.
      It's also important to remember that even if the water is shallow enough to touch the bottom, it is EXTREMELY important that you never put your feet down on the reef because it is alive. In protected places like Molokini, it's even illegal :O If you think you'll be tempted to, make sure you grab a flotation device like a pool noodle or a flotation belt. :) This provides extra comfort and can make the whole experience better if you are nervous.
      I hope this helps!

    I will be in Hawaii in 2 months and will be snorkeling! Im scared... Do you recommend any tips for a beginner?

    • @KaimanaConservation
      @KaimanaConservation  3 роки тому +2

      Aloha Vannida Vlogs! That's awesome, I hope you are excited! Snorkeling is super fun and a great way to see our coral reefs. It can be intimidating at first, but it's super easy :)
      Make sure that you ask a professional (boat crew or rental shop) to show you how to properly fit your mask and snorkel before you hop in the water. They will show you how to prevent leaks and clear your snorkel if you get any water inside. (Maui Snorkel Charters does a little Snorkel 101 class for folks who haven't snorkeled before). And with fins, make sure they fit snug but not pinching. And when kicking, keep your knees straight while you scissor kick for the best and easiest time :)
      Lastly, if you are really nervous, I definitely recommend renting some snorkel gear ahead of time and practicing in shallow water just off the beach. In water where you can touch the bottom, just put the mask on and practicing breathing at the surface while looking through the water at your feet. When you feel comfortable, then lift your feet up and start to kick around :)
      I hope this helps!
