  • Transferring Oncidium types (intergenerics) and Dendrobiums to water culture.
    This is step one of their transfer.
    1. Soak plant well so roots will relax and media will come off easier.
    2. I find they transfer easier if they have something to provide humidity, I use decorative glass pebbles.
    3. I let them dry out after I unpot to allow and breaks in the roots to heal.
    4. Introduce the water slowly

      Patricia Thibeault oh yes I do remember this but not just on Dendrobiums, I also would get it on other plants. So the way I got rid of it was making sure the base of the plant says dry. I lowered my water level and this stopped happening. When the base of the plant stayed to wet I would get this white powdery looking mold.

    I am loving your videos. They are an incredible resource. Thank you for taking the time and effort for documenting. You may have already addressed this, and if so I apologize for asking - but, does being in water culture effect the minimum room temperature they can handle?

    Another great video, Danielle! Question: I heard you say you clean out the glass pots once a month with your orchids. Do the orchids mind being “unpotted “ each time? Or do you flush the pot with the glass beads and plant still intact?

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591  4 роки тому +5

      Very good question if the orchid is just resting on the beads I take it out and clean the container and beads. If it’s potted in the beads I flush the vase with unfertilized water.

    I am transferring my oncidium that smells like chocolate, although mine has never bloomed. I am always worried about the water level. I am hoping to be able to transfer some to water. I have a lot of orchids in lava rock because of Rick and they have all done extremely well, but my oncidums do not like it. I do not like bark or moss.

    Hi Danielle, thank you for the very useful video. Coincidentally I was transferring an oncidium today. So this video has been very useful. When you add water, is it fertilised from the beginning, I. e. Do fertilers help or hider the transition? Many thanks in advance xxx

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591  4 роки тому +1

      I do fertilize them right from the beginning. Some others who grow hydroponically don’t do I think it’s a matter of personal preference but I’m my own circumstance I’ve never noticed an adverse effect from fertilizing right away. I do however fertilize my plants at lower levels then most manufacturers recommend, usually half strength and in the cooler months quarter strength.

    Hi Danielle, my orchids are in the rocks but in semi water culture. Every time I water them I clean the vase & the rocks. Is it preferable to do that coz some people said that growing algae in the vase is good for the orchid to give them company. For me I think algae invite bacteria. Pls. Let me know if it’s better to do that.

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591  4 роки тому +1

      So I fall somewhere in between, as long as the algae is alive and not taking over I don’t worry. However I feel when the algae cling to the roots they can suffocate them if large quantities attach. In addition when algae die it turns black and I’ve noticed some of my orchids really don’t like it . I think as you say the bacteria from the dead algae is what they object to.
      I do rinse/flush my plants at least once a month to wash away as much algae as possible and I am now using barley extract in my water to help keep the algae populations under control.

    Nice video! Question: The new roots at the top wont get any water until they grow quite a bit longer. Does this cause problems with new roots staying viable? Do they dry up and die?

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591  4 роки тому +1

      Orchid Garden I thoroughly rinse the roots at least once a week in addition to providing the humidity in the glass. Also I find the roots that reach the water even if not fully viable do wick water and the shorter roots that don’t reach the water often are damp because of this.

      Christa Bathgate I actually just added this type of plant to my collection and it is part of my recent orchid experiment series. An experienced grower helped me come up with my set up. He said they don’t like their roots disturbed, they need lots of humidity and they like to have minimal air pockets in the media.
      I would say repot when spike is done unless you think the media she in is bad.
      Unfortunately I am not an authority on these so I can’t give you much advice. You can check out my most recent update to see how I’m growing mine, it’s just a seedling;

    Hi Danielle, just noticed the wrinkled pseudobulb. I also have a pseudobulb in my blooming zygopetalum. I have soaked it in water for 24 hours every week and watered them every other day but they have not plumped up. What would you suggest to fix this problem? Thanks!

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591  4 роки тому

      Kittenpink sometimes when a pseudobulb wrinkles it will never plump back up. Some plants as the bulbs get old they wrinkle naturally and others it can be a sign of dehydration. As long it has a good root system and you are hydrating your plant sufficiently you are doing all you can for it.

    How do you keep the white mold that grows on the dendrobiums while in water culture

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591  4 роки тому +1

      Patricia Thibeault I have to say your not the first one to ask me about mold, I don’t really have this experience.
      I find if you are sure to remove the dead velamen from the roots and get all the organic media out mold is not an issue. It may also be because I use lower levels of water as well so the base of the plant stays dry.
      If I did have a mold develop I would use my tweezers to make sure all dead organic materials are removed and spray well with peroxide.

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591  4 роки тому

      Hanafi Irvan I do not have a Psychopsis so I can’t say from experience however knowing that they are an epiphytic plant that grows in wet rain forests I would think they would be well suited to water culture.

    • @hanafiirvan3408
      @hanafiirvan3408 4 роки тому

      Oh thank you for the answer. I am a little bit nervous because psychopsis don't like their roots disturbed, they said. And the roots are not attached to anything in water culture

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591  4 роки тому

      Hanafi Irvan you could try growing it in semi hydro. I have a video series about growing Cattleya's this way. They are in my version of semi hydro which is water culture. Then they will have something to grab onto and their roots won't be disturbed. I do believe several people grow psychopsis in semi hydro with Leca or seramis and they do well.

    "I recently got some very sick plants from a supplier"
    Apparently they are getting worse and worse. The number of videos I've seen lately complaining about them, well, not good for business (and rightfully so). They sold me an orchid last year that was supposed to be a blooming size Dendrobium victoria-reginae and I complained (sent them a picture of the plant) when it came that it wasn't blooming size and didn't look like a VR. They wrote back that is definitely is a blooming size VR. Now, I'll admit now that I was wrong, it is blooming size, it has buds. However, it definitely is not a VR based on those buds. Not sure what it is, won't know until they open, and I'm going to complain again. (not that it will do any good a year later)
    And while I'm on the subject, a victoria-reginae might actually be a good Dendrobium for you to try and grow. Doesn't need to be terribly warm (prefers 65-80 days), doesn't need high light (hates direct sun) and doesn't like to dry out. Also, the blooms are spectacular, as close to blue as you're going to get.

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591  4 роки тому +1

      Michael McCarthy and on top of sending me sick plants they sent me the wrong ones too. None are dead yet but I’m not holding onto much hope for a few.
      It’s super frustrating that they don’t stand behind their plants. And yet I see “unboxing “ videos from them all the time. I’m sorry about your victoria reginae. It seems this plant is hard to obtain so although I would LOVE one (blue is my favorite color) I don’t know how I would get my hands on one.
      Btw I contacted that eBay seller you recommended......turns out they have a few plants I want, lol
      I’m kinda disappointed your UA-cam has no content! I would love to see some of your plants and blooms. Maybe you could upload some photos????? Lol

      @@daniellesorchidranch1591 Springwater Orchids has victoria-reginae right now. I've been seeing them all over the place recently. I think there was a bumper crop of flasks a year or so ago, because the price has been quite reasonable compared to the past. I actually bought a second one from a different supplier that I'm confident is the correct plant.
