How to Brew Beer - Citra Double IPA Homebrew Recipe

  • In this homebrewing video we're making a Double IPA (Imperial IPA) with Citra hops. We're also using a new 240 volt brewing controller from Clawhammer Supply that uses a new ultra low watt density element. This is a big beer recipe with a big 18 pound grain bill and a bunch of Citra hops. In order to mash in all the grains, we sparge after the mash in order to have the right amount of water for the boil. Watch this video to learn how to easily brew big beers at home along with important techniques like sparging. This recipe and brew system is perfect for expert and beginner homebrewers. You should brew this beer with some friends and then take it to a cookout, game day party, wedding, or wherever there's thirsty people. We recommend pairing a big beer like this with foods like steak, hamburgers, french fries, and hot dogs. Let us know in the comments how this recipe worked for you if you try it out. Check out the resources below for a full recipe, brewing equipment, and an educational article about Citra hops.

    Marbles work really nice to make sure your hop bag sinks and all hops touch the beer during dry hoping.

    What should I change in the brewing process if I’m planning on bottling and not kegging this beer? How long should it be in the fermentation bucket? When should i add the dry hops and for how long? Should i bottle immediately after taking out the dry hops? How long should it sit in the bottles at room temp? Nice video!

      My first IPA is now on tap and I'm extremely happy with the outcome. One of my best beers yet. Just prepare yourself for the long heat up times. I'm now going to start using my propane burner and backup kettle to get the water to temp and then transfer to this system. Everything runs super smooth and easy once up and running but the heat up times add about 1-2 hours (depending on mash schedule) to a brew day and that doesn't always work for me.

    • @linuxbozo
      @linuxbozo 5 років тому

      There is a huge difference between 120v and 220v setups. I have the original system, and did a 220v conversion myself. Typical brew day went from about 6.5 to 7 hours on 120v to about 4.5 to 5. While I didn't provide a huge amount of detail, I outlined what I did so others could try to do the same: instagram.com/p/BjvlhtaFM61/?

      Ours is generally 73% for low to medium ABV beers. It drops with bigger beers if we don't sparge, but we generally have to sparge when the grain bill approaches 20lbs. Yep, we splurged and bought a canner! We really like it. Oktober Designs is the brand.

      @phrerix 5 років тому +3

      No harm in asking but! Conversion quick cheat guide: pounds to kilograms-divide by 2 (close enough, 1kg=2.2lbs), ounces to grams - multiply by 30 (close enough, 1oz=28.34g), now Fahrenheit to Celsius is a little tricky but for brewing mashing always happens around 66C which is 151F and every delta 1C is roughly delta 2F (close enough, delta 5C = delta 9F). This is what I do for a rough idea when listening to things.

    Why do you want to clarify the IPA? It should stay a bit cloudy, especially double IPA.

    • @ClawhammerSupply
      @ClawhammerSupply  5 років тому +6

      I only like my NEIPA style IPA's cloudy-- I like a nice clear IPA otherwise. That is the beauty of homebrewing-- no need to clear it up if that is not your thing.

    • @garethpritchard7012
      @garethpritchard7012 4 роки тому +1

      IPAs should be clear unless you're specifically making a New England IPA. Even if you're making a neipa you'd still use whirfloc in the boil to help the trub drop to the bottom. It'll still be hazy with all the protein rich adjuncts in the grist.
