This topic is so important and not discussed enough

Thanks for airing this topic out, Scott. So much of us deal with the same things and can get so wrapped up in our own minds. The necessary evils of it all.

7:40 it's 'curation', you're choosing what to present..

This might be one of the most useful videos I’ve watched in years! Everything mentioned from start to finish really landed with me. Thank you!

This video is the kick I think I needed

I think this applies to some departments more than others. Heads of departments I think it’s how they get a lot of work. For larger departments that are often forgotten like G&E it’s often just finding someone to fit the need or in a larger crew it’s like yes I worked on it but I was one of 4.

This video inspired me to pull a whole page off my website, so I only have my Music Video work visible now. I think specialising in a role within the industry or an area of expertise was one of the hardest things I've had to do so far. And even then, I've not gone all the way, (am I a DP that specialises in music videos, or a director) It's really a super tricky area for all creatives to figure out I feel, especially with the fear of missing out on a job because you're no longer advertising that you have experience in that area.

Completely emphasise with you there Adam! But the opportunities still seem to come here and there, I'm still doing plenty of editing work even though I haven't "advertised" that service for over 6 years now, it's a bill payer that at some point I just need to start to say no to in order to spend more time focusing on getting work as a director.

@@ScottPetersFilms Do you find those editing opportunities only come from existing clients & word of mouth through the network you've already built up? Cause I would presume that because you haven't "advertised" your skills as an editor, your client base for those edit jobs aren't coming from brand new people that stumble across your directing work and reach out to you only for your editing skills.

great honest conversation about the game of it all. I see it will never end lol.. which is good to know

Now I gotta decide where to focus because I love both directing and editing.

Wow, what a great and unique BTS topic! Crazy how much optics matter, even if you understand the game. Kind of like how you can be aware of the placebo effect, but it still works! I also love how judged even the pros are for using gear that doesn't LOOK professional enough.

Also, what a logic.. („you use a DSLM, so you don‘t feel comfortable using more professional gear“)
Arri Alexas f.e. are the most simple cameras to operate, and it’s much easier to make the image look „right“ as with a Sony or Lumix.
