ProMist factor set to 1990s levels! I've been seeing a lot of bloomed highlights lately, it's a fascinating trend. Style sure is a cyclical beast. Snarky filtration jokes aside, this is yet another great video Nur. Here's to 5k likes. NAY! 50,000 likes!
Question: I have some experience in videos and documentaries and I want to change into commercials. What could be the first steps? How can I get assigned to make a treatment?
You can’t really get assigned to write a treatment unless you have some form of a commercial portfolio and network within production companies. You can either make some spec commercials and send them to production companies OR write your best ideas as a treatment and try and pitch them to the smaller local brands, but then again - because there’s no evidence of your commercial directing abilities, chances are slim. Hence the first option is the surest way.
Awesome content & tone, the way you explain things in a cool manner. Could you possibly make a video on how to improve your live pitching skills? I find that this one is sometimes difficult, especially if you're working directly with the client, only brainstorming on ideas with them and trying to understand their expectations. Or perhaps you'd advice to never brainstorm with a client in a live call?
Yep. This something I try to avoid. I know that I need some quiet time and focus before I come up with something worthy. And usually my first idea isn’t my best. But that’s me. And then once I have a basis we can start discussing with the client and usually it gets better from there. Sometimes they’ll bring something up that makes it better.
Beautiful video Nur, it is a blessing the value you are providing for free. But this video made me curious about one thing...Where do we find agencies looking for freelancers for their commercials?
Thank you! Focus on finding production companies. They have access to all the agencies. And they’ll bring you commercial briefs. Make sure to sustain the relationship with the local producers.
Do you manage to get them looking exactly like you want or just use what it gives to you? I often want images to look like 16mm film, grainy and lit by hard light. Last time I dabbled into midjourney I couldn’t get anything close to it :(
one more trick: getting the midjourney image 75% there, and then using photoshop generative fill to change those small things it decided to do like putting champagne bottles in the middle of their forehead , lol. @@nurniazfilms
was that MJ 5 yet ? its pretty good for cinematic images. prompting for 16mm grain and hard light should be do-able. you can upload a image and have MJ suggest prompts to revise engineer, good way to find tokens that might help. @@nurniazfilms
Do you ever participate in the creative process of what the commercial will be? or you always start from the agency brief? whats the process when there is no agency and you are dealing directly with the client
I actually do, although not as often nowadays as before. Direct-to-client work is mostly with smaller brands and smaller budgets. This can be either good or bad, depending on the people managing those brands. Some may have a cool product and fully trust your team's vision, while others may have little experience, unrealistic expectations, and a desire to micromanage, all while having limited budgets. Therefore, working directly with clients requires a case-by-case approach. Working with ad agencies helps to address these issues, although it might mean less input at the beginning of the script, because like you said - we hop on board when we get the brief.
what a helpful video, thanks for sharing. I have a very important question, is that a mate at the left of the frame (the green cup with the bombilla in it)?
Thanks so much for creating this! I’m applying for a job as a Directors Assistant at a top production company in my city. A large part of the job is image research and creating treatments (or helping to). I’m thinking of submitting a mock treatment along with the application/portfolio and wondering if I should use a mock ad brief or make it for a short film idea/script I’ve been sitting on for a while. Any advice would be appreciated!
Try to make it into a sellable ad as much as you can. That way it’s much easier to penetrate the market, when the idea you’re pitching will drive more sales/brand awareness/loyalty. It’s always best when your ideas are applicable in a commercial sense. If they’re too avangard, you can still try, but research the market first. Otherwise it’s just a passion project for yourself. Which is okay too as long as you understand the outcome.
HI Nur, I do have a question, if there is something similar, but do we have to worry about protecting ideas? Like what if you send your Idea in this case to the final client (not the agency) and they won't take you as director but take the idea? I am curious about that. Any experience or ideas? Maybe that never happens?
It happens often and you can’t do much about it unfortunately. And if it makes you feel better - even if they take your idea it’s never gonna be done the way YOU envisioned it. I talk about it more in one of my previous QnA videos.
Please will you make the treatment you just created available for download? I pray you get more likes so you can shoot the commercial for real. Great tutorials by the way.
Yep. I actually do use quite a few. So I use this platform called katalist for my storyboards. I use notion’s ai writer to help me tidy up my writing and organize my notes. And I use canva’s ai features to basically replace all my photoshop needs

Hello Nur! Excellent and very useful video! Where could I find opportunities to pitch? Thanks for the value you provide!👍
what a helpful video, thanks for sharing. I have a very important question, is that a mate at the left of the frame (the green cup with the bombilla in it)?
Yes, it is!
would like to see this filmed as a spec advert for sure
Me too! Let’s get this to 5k. I mean even if it gets less Imma probably make it anyways so that you guys can gain some insight into it 🙏
Great post! Question: when you add the reference options; audio/video... you get that done using also keyNote? thanks!
Yes you can! Either as a link in pdf, or as an interactive slide if you’re sending it as a keynote file.
Thank you so much!
Glad it helped!

Because MATE is the best drink the humanity has ever invented 🤷♂️😂
@@nurniazfilms love it ! haha
sooo helpful thank you!💖
Bit of an amateur question, but would it be wise to make a treatment like this for a short film??
Yeah of course! You can use this for a short, a tv show, a music video or a commercial. The logic is exactly the same.
Will there be a store sale soon for the holidays? 🎉 please 😅
yes there will be :D
yesssssss thanks
Let’s get this to 5k likes guys 🔥
