Malcolm I too retired this May after 54 years of nursing and I too am trying to do all the things I dreamed of doing on my property. I thank God that I have the gardens to keep me busy and entertained.
We are very fortunate Terry…..after 54 years in that profession you deserve an equal amount in your garden, I have been very fortunate to do for a living what many do as a hobby. I don’t think many would catheterise a patient, dress wounds or provide bed pans as part of their down time. You have both my respect and thanks. Best wishes….Malcolm
Thank you Robert…….there was a time years ago that if you didn’t have back ache or do things in a difficult traditional way, the old head gardeners would assume you weren’t working hard enough. They often equated discomfort or pain with hard work as opposed to efficiancy….I suspect this was similar in other trades also. Best wishes…Malcolm
What a pleasure to see you back and your new intro is fantastic! Thanks for the spade review, I knew us Americans were good for something- creating a good tool for ditch digging 😀
Thank you Melody. I’ll be looking at trenching spades in the very near future….doesn’t sound the stuff of award winning interest……but you’d be surprised. Best wishes…Malcolm.
So do I Sheila…..unfortunately getting from here to there is proving a bit more physically challenging than I’d expected. Thank you for the encouraging comment. Best wishes…Malcolm
Great to see you back Malcolm. Loving the progress of all your projects in your beautiful garden. Its been a difficult few weeks for family recently due to the loss of a loved one. Always enjoy watching your vlogs. Im so glad Amanda is still treating us to her photographs and poems.
Thank you Margaret….I’m sorry for your loss. It’s an annoying part of being human and far too common as we get older. I wish you well. I think Amanda will be contributing a fair bit, but she and her sisters have been looking after a poorly mum in recent weeks……which is probably surprising…..not that their elderly mother is unwell, but that there are several other like Amanda. Best wishes as ever….Malcolm
Welcome back ya old coot. Its great to see you in a more relaxed atmosphere and working in your own garden. I look forward to many more of these videos.
Always a treat when you post. Thank you for your continuing videos. Such a wealth of knowledge. Being from America I grew up with one of those shovels in my hand. I dug a lot of ditches and holes. The long handle works great when you put it across your leg, a few inches above the knee cap, it allows you to leverage the load using your leg as a pivot. Happy digging
They are great shovels Beaver……I’ve been using one for about 30 years now…….Alf my old head gardener called me unrepeatable word (even for me) when I told him what I’d bought myself, so I took it down to him to try on my next visit…….but the silly old goat refused to use it…..I remember his words as being along the lines of…..”I’ve been using a f***Ing spade since your arse was as big as a f***ing sixpence…..I don’t need some silly f***ing C**t telling me how to dig a f***ing hole after 70 f***ing years”……..personally I find it really good to use, and as you say the leverage you can get is brilliant….the only thing I found with my new one is the quality of metal is poor….I can feel it bend slightly on pressure…..but that is a quality issue, the tool itself is excellent. Thank you for your comments. Very best wishes….Malcolm
@@plantsmanscorner128 Malcolm, on your shovel quality bending issue I couldn’t agree more. I used to build swimming pools and I have tied a lot of rebar steel. On one of our builds the inspector checked the grade of steel. The number 3 bar (3/8”) was called out on the plan for 60 grade but the inspector found out we were sold 40 grade. Had to be changed. Same size bar but a denser higher quality steel. We see it a lot in other products like cereal for instance you go to buy a box of corn flakes at the market, same size box but when you open it there’s half a bag in there. So yeah all shovels might look the same but a lower grade of steel is being used. Happy digging Chuck

My nose works Ok and I LOVE Vegetarian Baked Beans! Can’t even keep them in the house cuz I will just eat them all! Re shovels, as we yanks call them, I really like the long handle since then you do much less bending. Also when you have hard soil you just hop onto the edge and it sinks down (unless I’ve been doing well with the diet). That’s why the top edges are flat. Once I bought a SMITH & Hawken spade on sale and it looks nice but I really can’t make myself use it. I am so pleased to see this new video. It is wonderful, the intro is hilarious, and I am going back to watch it again. Thanks!💜💚💜💚💜💚.
I love your shovels Lauren….much less bending as you say. We don’t have Smith & Hawken over here…..there are some good tool manufacturers but also a lot of total crap imported from China and given a rural English sounding name…..look good but about as much use as a chocolate teapot. I remember the name Hawken because my favourite film is (movie) is Jeremiah Johnson…..and Hawken rifles were referred to in that. Thank you for your kind comments…..best wishes….Malcolm

Brilliant, Love your irreverent ways, makes me laugh. Yeh and Gordon Ramsey makes me laugh too. Once again you taught me something new about gardening without me being aware that I was being taught. Thanks again.
It’s a funny thing Ean, if you take a youngster, or an older person, and work with them amongst plants for a while….it is not long before people that visit the nursery and gardens ask them questions they are able to answer…..the knowledge builds and builds and before long they know so much without realising they’ve been absorbing things…..of course there is a degree of receptiveness and interest needed to start with, but learning without knowing your learning seems peculiar to horticulture, or at my area of it at least. Perhaps it’s the vastness of the plant kingdom that allows for continual knowledge and understanding….after to years professionally I still feel I’ve only scratched the surface. But you observation is a very interesting one because I was forever encouraging staff to realise they will learn things without realising it….and after you simply kickstart their enthusiasm they then effectively teach themselves as their confidence grows. Thank you for your comment Ean. Best wishes….Malcolm
I’m not sure I didn’t create more confusion Sally….I might just go over it again as I’ve some Lilly bulbs arriving this week. Thank you for your lovely comment. Best wishes…Malcolm
The beginning is wonderful! And retirement seems to agree with you. You look very well indeed. How lovely it is to hear Amanda, too. I sometimes have a dreadful time trying to sleep with all the insanity and sadness in the world; so, I often put one of your films on and listen until I drop off. It really is kind of you to put this out there for all of us. I bought an English spade years ago just for the romance of it but I always found the handle too short. I took it as a personal failing. Well, I can love it as an artifact now. ❤️
An Englishman’s spade is like his arms, generally too short for his long pockets……I’m not saying we’re tight or anything, but I do live in Yorkshire where it’s said copper wire was invented by two Yorkshiremen fighting over a penny….although Billy Connelly reckons it was two Scotsmen I have to disagree……..Pam, there has always been sadness in the world…and insanity….I think with modern technology we hear about it so much more….we’re a click away from everyone’s misery and it’s depressing if you let it get on top of you…..there’s also a lot of good but it’s not as newsworthy (which is all the wrong way round if you think about it)…..there is just so much we can access in an instant……there nothing like “tits or trouble” for getting clicks. Please don’t let it get to you……take care of yourself….best wishes…Malcolm
Welcome Back! So lovely to see you. You've really done a lot of work in your garden and it's looking great. So much space and potential there now. I'll be watching with great interest to see how it develops. Thankyou so much for sharing your time and knowledge. ☺👍
@@plantsmanscorner128 I never realised either. When I was in the young ornithologists club as a kid, they reckoned there were Gold Crest at Wynyard hall, but we never saw any
Brilliant!!!! The Intro tells me you've embraced the new journey. Not sure how you are going to handle all that "peace and quiet" at home. 😳 So, is the bench under the sharp, mean, thorny old rose, for people who come to visit, and you don't really want them to stay long? Do you have a tripod for your camera Malcolm? Wouldn't be a lot easier in the wind, but on non-windy days, might make filming a little easier. Thank you to the camera person, great job, as always. Love how your kitchen window looks out into the garden. Stay well, and thank you for sharing your time, energy, and wealth of knowledge with us.
I do have a tripod Gigi….but I’m often too lazy to set it up and by the time I do I’ve forgotten what I was going to say…….I don’t script anything (as you can probably tell) or even write notes…..it’s one shot, say what comes into mind, then done……that’s why occasionally my turn of phrase or language is not quite to convent expectations……but I should now I’ve more time. You are absolutely right……also right on the bench being really for show….and it’s under the rose from hell so any visitors won’t come again once their ears have been shredded by that spiky bugger…..very best wishes…Malcolm
Lovely ! Welcome back to you all. Keep up the good work. My weekly dose of sanity. Talking about spades, I find good use on some jobs for half size apprentice fork and spade. Sussex Brian.
Oh Malcolm i thoroughly enjoyed the content of your new video! So nice to hear from Amanda too, her dulcet tones would be missed, along with her gentle sense of humour, gentle compared to yours I mean 🤣 and the directors and so forth. You are so clever and such a worker, I cannot wait to see how it all turns out, and I’m totally going enjoy the journey.
Yes, she pretty unique is our Mands…..It never feels like I’m being insulted but if anyone else said the same things about me I’d know for sure I was….These women all pick on me you know Lynne……I am totally hen pecked 👨🌾👎👎👎….Take care and very best wishes…Malcolm
I am amazed Laren after I looked it up. Very similar. I read it is actually part of the kinglet family. Amazing it only weighs about 5g…..next to nothing really. I had always assumed the wren was our smallest bird when in fact here in the UK it’s the goldcrest. Best wishes….Malcolm
Love this !!! So much fun to see you in creative mode ! I had to giggle over the shovel /spade bit... I am so excited to watch you transform your garden , you are so clever and such an inspiration !!!!
I’m not really that clever Gypsy…..I’ve just been around a lot of gardeners and plantsmen since a small child…….hopeless at most other things. Take care and best wishes…Malcolm
New subscriber here, really enjoyed this, wish you were near me I could provide a good home for that stone, looking forward to watching this progress lovely garden
Thank you…..I will be remaking the pond and a stream with a lot of the stone…..it’s funny that some places have little of it and others have gardens full of the stuff…..where I grew up we had ton upon ton of flint and chalk. Absolutely horrible, at least here we’ve 18 inches of good deep top soil……Best wishes….Malcolm
Oh Malcom lovely to see you again . You make my heart sing .love the introduction .The pier looks brilliant although I’m not a fan of pea gravel ,I roll all over on it ,my feet that is 😁 I’ve missed your profanity’s with all the woke P C brigade 🤮 keep it up ,see you next time . Randy Mandy ,now there’s a name to cherish 😂 nice to here your lovely voice again and your photos ,Till next time 😘
So glad to see your garden jobs Malcolm -worry and change become 'next year; to gardeners. Shove the Acers into bigger pots - they get root bound. (see Bunny Guiness' Bottomless Pots' on YT). That's a great surface of pea gravel - nice to walk on. Such hard work but - what a super playground you have!
I’ve learn over the years that acres love being root bound……when young over potting is the main cause of plants dying. I am enjoying my playground Wendy. But as I’ve said….never sure what day of the week it is…..Best wishes…Malcolm
@@plantsmanscorner128I've lost potted plants too, but this year my son helped to cut most of the base off 4 tall containers now holding healthy Buxus for a gravelled yard with no soil. I envy your digging areas! You have the playground many of us would love - so many surprises too, perhaps. No matter what day - so long as it's fine! Best wishes Wendy.
Love intro😅😅.... such a lot of work done already! Iike Diana Henry cook books.. not too poncey... oven to table..so easy. Looking forward to seeing it develop - do keep Randy Mandy..her photos are great. Q.. can you move a magnolia? Someone gave me a "dwarf"... it ain't now leader is 8'. Can give it to community garden nearby but have read it's difficult... think I'll try. Good luck with the rats.. JR's are so good at that. My fatsia is a windbreak but share your opinion ..with equal profanity.☺☺
I have some Diana Henry books….One pot cooking was a good one. I would move magnolia in the dormant season Claire……I’d be tempted also to reduce the size by a third to a half….primarily so that it’s not trying to maintain so much leaf in spring after it’s roots have been upended and damaged….at least reduce all the newest growth but try to keep some shape when you do it……best wishes…Malcolm
Oh thanks for advice Malcolm.. just musing out loud really...will do. Migjht as well give it a go. Just did chicken and balsamic with pomengranate. Extremely poncey!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Love all the information but sure wish I wouldn't have to worry about the language when my grandkids are watching with me. They love gardening but I don't like them to hear bad words. Also was wondering if your pups ever fight? Our Jack fights with almost any other dogs. He usually ends up the one hurt because he fights with much larger dogs. Have to keep him seperated from the other dogs most of the time. ☹
Hello Kristina….. I’m afraid my videos are not made with children in mind. This was a conscious decision on my part. Having grown up in working nurseries and gardens and lived in a similarly working rural environment, I am simply reflective of all the characters I learnt from and their influence on me. I would not be comfortable with censuring any of it no matter what modern day sensibilities might try to dictate. I think people have their own censorship with the on/off or change channel button. I talk on film as I would in the potting shed to a customer, apprentice, or employee alike. It is not done for effect, it is done to be true to myself and my upbringing….warts and all. I am also too lazy minded to be worrying or thinking about what to say or who might be offended. I do not consider children, it is for their parents to do that or we would have no discussion or debate on an ‘adult’ level, no comedy or satire etc……I do understand your point, in the end though I make these videos for you and other grown ups to enjoy or get information from or turn off……not for children, there’s plenty for them already….everywhere. Some might say too much. Perhaps I should make a children’s series “my secret garden” perhaps……I will look into the possibility of teaching a child how to grow things….but I’m sure there must be someone doing that……Now, as for Jack Russell’s…..my two girls (Finn & Pepper) are no trouble……The boy (Tucker) thinks he’s a Rottweiler….He is a bit of a pain with other dogs….and is getting worse as he gets older. He only barks, not bites, but other dogs don’t know that…..so he is not easy to take out publicly….fine with people but try’s to assert dominance with other dogs…it can be funny when a big dog swats him away, but it can lead to scraps……he has had so many stitches I think that’s all that is holding him together. Like you I need to keep him separated from dogs he is unfamiliar with much of the time.._it make walks a bit unrelaxing to say the least. Anyway Kristina….Thank you for your comment and I hope my reply has explained things. Very best wishes to you….and your grandchildren…..Malcolm
@@plantsmanscorner128 Thank you for your reply! Our Jack is also a male so maybe that is the problem. 🤣 There are very few knowledgeable gardening shows for children. My grands are very interested in all parts of gardening and so I think a youtube channel would be a great hit! Thanks for your honesty. I am not a fan of the language either but think you have a wealth of knowledge so I will continue watching. I really am enjoying the transformation of your yard. Keep up the good work and I will just turn off the sound in the final tour to show the grandkids. 😉😊
@@kristinastoltzfus6032 I was asked about 20 years ago to do a TV programme for channel 4, all about an elderly gardener showing his granddaughter how to grow plants and tend a garden…..I turned the opportunity down because I don’t really like children….despite apparently being very good with them. I think this might have been a mistake…….so despite my obvious reservations and style…..I will seriously look a toned down series of child friendly stuff and give it consideration. Best wishes….Malcolm
@@plantsmanscorner128 I think the childrens shows are to easy and they dumb things down for children which is unnecessary. Raise the bar and speak to them like they can understand and they do. This comes from a homeschool mom. I worked at a nursey to pay for horse riding lessons and the children went with me and sat at a table to do school work and then they would help. It was amazing the things they would enjoy doing. Wish my grands had the same opportunities but times change. Best wishes for continued success in these videos!
I can see what you mean MDA……though I think I’d recognise the habit as we had a big one at Eggleston…..however I will keep an eye on it over the next couple of years and see how it develops.. Best wishes…Malcolm
I am really enjoying seeing the progress you are making Malcolm. Poor Amanda, you are 'orrid! I know she can give as good as she get tho and always gets her revenge! I was wondering if you have plans with your allotment? I'm sure you already have plenty on your plate tho.
‘Orrid!?……You don’t see the way I’m dominated by all these women Carol….I am but a poor simple gardener, used and abused to the point of despair 😩……worn out and thrown away like a discarded toy that’s had it’s stuffing knocked out of it…..🧸😥😥😥…………I am but a shadow of my former self 👨🌾👎…….beer or cider are my only comforts😥…driven to drink. 🥃
There is a very good cook on youtube Malcolm. Proper food. Not poncy at all. Look up Sanctuary Kitchen or Kitchen Sanctuary. One of the two. I believe she has just had a cook book published as well.

Malcolm: You are the best
Welcome Back! So lovely to see you. You've really done a lot of work in your garden and it's looking great. So much space and potential there now. I'll be watching with great interest to see how it develops. Thankyou so much for sharing your time and knowledge. ☺👍
I hope it doesn’t disappoint as it’ll be a slow progress Alesgriff. Thank you for your kind comment….best wishes…Malcolm
Ooh Malcolm - the director 🤣🙈 So looking forward to this! Hope you’re all well 👍🏼
I’m very well Linda thank you….hope you are likewise. Best wishes…Malcolm
Good.man.enjoy
Amanda, wonderful pics of the Gold Crest, Real treat as I have never seen one.
I never knew it was the smallest uk bird Bad Books….always thought it was the wren. Always good to learn stuff. Best wishes…Malcolm
I do have some smaller border spade and fork Brian….I’m going to be reviewing a trenching spade and shovel in the next few week. Best wishes…Malcom
@@plantsmanscorner128 you can take it Malcolm, it keeps you on your toes 😄
In North America we have a similar looking little bird called the Golden Crowned Kinglet. I’ve only seen them a few times.
Thankyou
New subscriber here, really enjoyed this, wish you were near me I could provide a good home for that stone, looking forward to watching this progress lovely garden
Thank you…..I will be remaking the pond and a stream with a lot of the stone…..it’s funny that some places have little of it and others have gardens full of the stuff…..where I grew up we had ton upon ton of flint and chalk. Absolutely horrible, at least here we’ve 18 inches of good deep top soil……Best wishes….Malcolm
great spade advice
Oh Malcom lovely to see you again . You make my heart sing .love the introduction .The pier looks brilliant although I’m not a fan of pea gravel ,I roll all over on it ,my feet that is 😁 I’ve missed your profanity’s with all the woke P C brigade 🤮 keep it up ,see you next time . Randy Mandy ,now there’s a name to cherish 😂 nice to here your lovely voice again and your photos ,Till next time 😘
I will keep it up with help from Mandy on occasions. Take care of yourself Eileen…..Best wishes…Malcolm
Comment for the algorythm. Algorythm didnt tell me about these :0( Have to catch up now! :) Happy New year!
007 gardener.
Like your food. Very nice.
So great to see you again!
Beautiful video and music.
Thank you. I liked the spade
demo especially.
Great video, think I might stay at work a bit longer, that looks like real hard work
Thank you for your comment Colin……it is hard work but I figure I’ll be a long time dead so I’ll stick with it while I can……👍 very best wishes….Malcolm
Missed you!
Thank you for your kind comment Maria. Best wishes…Malcolm
Congrats on your retirement!
Fabulous..... :-)
Thank you
Love intro😅😅.... such a lot of work done already!
Extremely poncey!🤣🤣🤣🤣
opening graphics very 60s mod Excellent. Love the wrist joke. I wonder how many picked it? lol
I get into trouble for making jokes like that Alan…..still do it but I’m always nervous these days. Best wishes….Malcolm
There are very few knowledgeable gardening shows for children.
Could the non linear maple be omuryama??? The leaves look a bit like omuryama which weeps without being dissected,,,,just a guess...
I just can not believe what you have done with Sunniside. I gotta get my 72 year old ass out more in my midwest US garden.
👍👍👍
I dont know how I missed it, did you announce who took over your job since you retired?
Never thought you'd become a domestic goddess, How were the Huge Furry-Market-stall flapjacks? Enjoy your retirement & keep the videos coming.
Flapjacks we’re lovely….though most seemed to find their way over to Eggleston……feeding Thomas and John’s faces. I think I just got one. Take care Ant…Best wishes…Malcolm
Wow I thought you were Roger Taylor!
Sorry, I don’t know who that is…….probably another moaning old pensioner as well. Best wishes….Malcolm
