From my understanding, hyper offense was just too good. Once those broken mons are banned, I don't see a fundamental difference between gen 9 and earlier gens. It has always been hazards, status, knock off, safely switch your breaker in, faint something, or do chip damage, set up sweeper, or win the sack game, or eliminate switch-in. The only difference between gen 8/9 and early gens is that they gave overall bad mons a gimmick/niche... like overall bad Dracovish fishous rend, overall bad mousehold population bomb and tiddy up, mediocre H-arcane rock head and recoil moves, overall bad falinks with omniboost, last respect mons, rage fist.... giving overall bad mons one gimmick is a good thing (better than early gen where bad mons are just overall bad without any interesting gimmick). They just need to not make the gimmick too overpowered (or we just ban them)

It'd be perfectly serviceable without its ability. If anything, Chi-Yu's biggest problem is how little it deviates from the formula. The only really "unique" thing about it is that it hits harder than its competition. It doesn't use any moves with an interesting effect and its ability just makes its moves hit harder. Raw power is never interesting on its own unless you add a serious caveat, drawback or condition to it.

Mega Mawile, Mega Kangaskhan, Aegislash, Landorus-T, Primal Groudon, Primal Kyogre, Mega Rayquaza, Mega Gengar, Xerneas, Tapu Koko, Incineroar... Also, lots of Gen 9 mons have insane base stats. Flutter Mane's special attack and speed are just 15 points short of Deoxys-Normal's, and its special defense is only 25 points short of Deoxys-Defense's. It's like Mega Manectric but without a team restriction, or any way to switch into it safely. Besides, who cares if Chi-Yu's damage comes from a powerful signature ability or raw stats when the outcome is exactly the same either way? The math in the background doesn't matter if the playstyle is the same "Click 1 button to OHKO everything" shtick.
Just a casual 3 and a half fucking thousand special attack equivalent. On a neutral hit. Into a quad weak Mon like Snowbama, even max Sp.Def doesn’t stop it getting 1 hit 8-9 times over. I also, just for fun, ran calcs on the lowest special bulk quad fire-weak pokemon, paras, and beefed up Chi-Yu as high as possible., and used Helping Hand boost to bring back Chi-Yu’s power from the nerfs. The highest damage amount I got was 62312, or 566472.7% of paras’s health. The thing got killed 5 thousand times over
Setting up Trick Room to counter Chi-Yu almost never works either since most TR setters are Ghost or Psychic types. Even with Tera + Follow Me, you basically have to sacrifice something to get TR set up.

I actually have started running Torkoal in trick room parties. Just so i can mode switch with fluttermain, and chi-yu. And has the side effect of turning off rain/snow. As well as countering Roaring Moon's acrobatics. Probably the most broken party ive ever run (without megas).

Ok, 135 special attack in itself might be messed up… in generation 1. Alakazam, Chandelure, Haxorous, Darmanitan, Latios, and most pseudo-legendaries all have one equal to or higher than 135 base attack (physical or special). That concludes my party pooping paragraph.
Latios is only 130, and then for pseudos only Salamence/Metagross/Baxcalibur tie/exceed on offenses. Dragonite/Tyranitar are just below at 134, while Goodra and Dragapult exceed 135 on Spdef and Speed. Hydreigon and Kommo'o's max stats are 125 in SpA and Def

Overheat is actually not a 2HKO because of the satk drop As someone else also mentioned, it's effectiv SAtk base is higher than 170 because of EVs and IVs being added and getting that *1.33 multiplier as well. The more EVs and IVs, the higher the effective base. Also I think it's decent 120 SDef base is not irrelevant at all, although its HP is kinda underwhelming though. Still, it's got better defenses overall than stuff like Rotom-W

I play with and study alot of game development. I also play and study alot of Yo-Kai Watch 3. Reason I do that is because I am learning game development and wanna make my own original monster collector. Yo-Kai Watch 3 tends to avoid alot of Pokemon's balance issues due to how the system works or how certain monsters are designed. For example, there is a Yo-Kai called Grubbles with a blanket effect passive skill that works even if the user is in the back that debuffs all monsters' Defense stat. However, it is 10% debuff. The user is also debuffed. The user itself, Grubbles, is a frail low Rank magic attacker so it cannot really make use of it without building a team of phys attackers around it. WAY better balance philosophy and design than Chi-Yu. That id just one of hundreds of examples how Yo-Kai Watch 3 is a better designed game.

As someone else also mentioned, it's effectiv SAtk base is higher than 170 because of EVs and IVs being added and getting that *1.33 multiplier as well. The more EVs and IVs, the higher the effective base.
Also I think it's decent 120 SDef base is not irrelevant at all, although its HP is kinda underwhelming though. Still, it's got better defenses overall than stuff like Rotom-W

yeah the calc is scuffed that way. imo the egregious part is that your quad resist switch-in with an assault vest can't actually switch in more than once.

I play with and study alot of game development. I also play and study alot of Yo-Kai Watch 3. Reason I do that is because I am learning game development and wanna make my own original monster collector.
Yo-Kai Watch 3 tends to avoid alot of Pokemon's balance issues due to how the system works or how certain monsters are designed.
For example, there is a Yo-Kai called Grubbles with a blanket effect passive skill that works even if the user is in the back that debuffs all monsters' Defense stat.
However, it is 10% debuff.
The user is also debuffed.
The user itself, Grubbles, is a frail low Rank magic attacker so it cannot really make use of it without building a team of phys attackers around it.
WAY better balance philosophy and design than Chi-Yu.
That id just one of hundreds of examples how Yo-Kai Watch 3 is a better designed game.
