There is one large problem with inexpensive LED bulbs which is the color quality, specifically the R9 red in the RA(R9 plays a huge role in accurate skin tones), these bulbs should be metered on a full range meter such as the Sekonic C-700, what I have found with this meter is that even a bulb with a 90+ CRI it may have a 50-60 R9, and also a low R12 (deep blue).

I've been using square umbrella style soft boxes with screw in LEDs for a few years now. It helps keep the client from sweating all their makeup off for one thing.
I was not aware of these type of bulbs though. Thank you for this

Dammit, Caleb, you're responsible for how much I've spent on lighting xD
I may wait on these until I have a bigger space or can ceiling mount stuff. I absolutely can't stand the big soft boxes with wall plugs, a nightmare in my small setup. I got a $100 2 LED panel kit with soft boxes that have been serving me decently well.

    Great Video, thanks!!!
I ´ve brought the Bonlux 40W 5 Months Ago to test it.
I also use flourescent bulbs (135W) with softboxes and i have to say, that i prefer the flourescent bulbs at the moment.
They are a little bit brighter than the Bonlux and i guess the colortemperature of the Bonlux isnt exactly the same.
I could imagine that the Savage would bring better results in combination with other lights, because of the CRI 90.
(sorry for my bad english :D)

I have been doing this for some time now. I bought a 4 bulb screw in adapter and used the highest watt led bulbs I could find in the big box store. My main bulbs are daylight 60W equivalent. They are slightly green but easy to adjust in post. I have used them commercialy for corporate shoots and they are pretty affordable.

There are fittings that take four ES mount bulbs switched in pairs and they take a brolly softbox shaft through the centre. Put 4 corn cob bulbs in and get very good output. Quick and compact to fold down and very cheap.

  • @makatron

Some cheap corn cob style ones are dangerous as they don't really step the voltage down, just split it and distribute it to the independent PCB, so you have mains voltage with no protection between the parts you actually touch and the socket output. Open that one up and verify, maybe those are good.

Thanks for this Caleb - I'd love to put 4 of those 50watts in my softbox. The only concern would be overheating, but it'd be the equivalent of 1400watts incandescent! Perhaps 4 of them with a shoot-through umbrella but no reflector would allow air to circulate?

I've got a cheap 4-bulb ebay softbox running walmart 100w giving me about 4800 lumens output. I was looking at corncobs to upgrade (got a Brinks security bulb as a test), and after seeing this video, I'm definitely taking the plunge, budget willing. At a little over $18 each, I'm looking at $220 for my complete setup.

It is the size of the surface area of the diffusion that creates the wrap around light source. That is why it is of benefit to use a soft box on any light source whether it be incandescent fresnel or led light panel. If a soft box is not available, hang a piece of diffusion material some distance from the light source. The advantage of led is the no heat factor. So material too close to source will not burn. If you need to take down the level of a led source, you can use netting in front of source.

    Nice!
I never thoroughly tested my ghetto setup, so I can't really recommend... but it might be an alternative for some to try.
I build myself sometime ago a ghetto lighting box of sort using a huge rectangular transparent tupperware like box with 5 light sockets in it... and just use 5 regular led lightbulbs in them. Spray painted the box white, held on top of a refurbished cheap-o tripod that was broken. Originally made with CFL bulbs in mind.
Not sure how LED bulbs sell in the US and other countries, but at least here in Brazil small regular light bulbs are the only ones I can usually find selling for cheap in promos... big ones are not only hard to find, they usually go for a premium.
Honestly, CRI is probably crap in those. No brand name bulbs sold for cheap for standard home illumination, they'll most likely throw a green tint or something similar.
But it ends up being cheaper than getting a huge lightbulb with high wattage.
I got myself one of those led mats from the other video, been eyeing them for over a year now... unfortunately none of the links provided shipped to Brazil, so I had to go with another source (sorry). But I'll use it as key, probably with foamcore for fill, and the ghetto thing for back light, or some other combination.
Another thanks for Caleb for doing these awesome videos!

  • @Samtagri
    @Samtagri 7 років тому

    Nice video (as always)
Just one thing. As far as I understand the physics, the distance between the light source and the diffusion material won't effect the softness of the light.
In other words, a diffused led panel will be just as soft as a softbox of the SAME SIZE.

Very interesting. I think though that smaller LED's are a tiny bit more versatile for outdoor and Guerilla filmmaking, because very often the filmmaker doesn't have access to standard sockets and doesn't the bulkiness of a softbox. Not saying saying softboxes don't have their place, but they are not for everyone.

I found that the 4-in-1 bulb fixture with the softbox is more economical.
    4 x 17W LED CRI95 bulbs = 4 x $5 = $20 for total equivalent of 400W incandescent light per softbox.

I guess my biggest issue is softboxes and umbrellas are they are just so big for small spaces like apartments and leds seems cheaper, lighter, less power consumption, and more portable. I'm probably missing few things, but I know for me I want to try to use window light with perhaps 1 or 2 leds to save money and reduce the footprint needed. I'm still shopping around for the right lights for me.

    • @DaimyoD0
      @DaimyoD0 3 роки тому +1

I am far from an authority on the topic, but in my experience, the most important thing is that you can make your color temperatures match when you want them to. So long as the color isn't unreasonably shifted (low CRI) you can fix imperfect white balance in post pretty easily so long as all your lights are the same color. If you can start with all your lights in roughly the same place, you can make artistic decisions to change the color temperature, say between your key and your fill, either using a bi-color variable LED panel, gels, diffusions or even bounces/reflectors (just not those ugly gold ones they're just too much for me lol). Obviously you can use some of these same tricks to try to make lights of different colors match, but I'm sure you understand how quickly this can add complexity to your set up and why it's easiest to have high CRI lights with a predictable color temperature.
I like to aim for daylight (5600K). I feel like there are so many warmer options even for modern LED bubs is to try to match old incandescent standards. There's no hard standard on how bright bulb should be; it sort of depends on the lamp/softbox you're putting it in, how close you can get it to your subject, how many lights you plan to use, what camera you're shooting with. Basically, I think the answer is as bright as you can reasonably afford without compromising too much on color quality. If it's bright enough that you can maintain 180 degree shutter (granted that this is for video) and an ISO setting that isn't introducing noise in your image, you're stellar. Without a light meter, I would say the best way to get there is to try what you can and see what works.
YMMV, on all of that. I'm just an amateur that watches a lot of YT videos lol

You really helped me a lot with this video. Now I can reuse my Limostudio softboxes instead of getting only led panels. But I got a question. I can fit 4 bulbs of 45 watts on each socket. Can I replace every bulb with a led bulb of any wattage or is necessarily to get a 45 watt bulb?

I put 3 95w phillips daylight leds in my neweer ones with 5 sockets each, and I havent had any issues. The form factor of these lights wont allow for every socket to be filled, though.
Without diffusion it's bright enough to be a spot.

Great review. Any lights like those with dimming capabilities that you know of?

These would be great for lighting a green screen. Especially in a small space style light configuration. Do you know any cheap space light set ups that have a standard bulb socket that might work for these?

Also another question, can I mount an external flash on my softboxes? the problem with them is that they are mounted to the bulbs socket. But there's another way to reuse my existing softboxes with flashes?

Hey Caleb, I have the 5 bulb soft boxes that are individually switched. I would like to go with LED’s. What bulbs do you recommend for this set-up? Thanks, Fred

Would these bulbs work in a 4 head soft box or would you just use them in a single head soft box? I was thinking of getting rid of my soft boxes because 4 bulbs are so expensive to replace then one bulb. The only down side is less light. Thanks.

Hi, it's good to see your videos ! it helps a lot! May I ask that how do you mount the light box to the stand? Thank you!
