I was given this watch as a gift from my girlfriend in about 1969. She worked for Macy's (Bamberger's at the time later taken over by Macys). I think she got the watch for about $275.00 with a 20% discount as an employee. Since my watch was made before the moon landing, it did not have the "lunar stamp" on the back side". However, it did have the plastic crystal, rather than a glass crystal on it. Since then, I had the watch refurbished to include a better plastic crystal. At the time, NASA did not want glass on the face of the watch, in case the face became broken. They did not want tiny glass particles floating in the cabin at the time for obvious reasons. After about two to three years, the face of my watch was scratched and gouged because of the plastic face. As a student at FIT near Cape Canaveral, I wanted my watch to remain just like the astronauts were wearing. However, years later, when I returned it to Omega for repairs, they took it upon themselves to replace the watch with a more scratch resistent Hazilite face. They also gave me a new wristband as well as doing a major overhaul to the inside guts of the watch. It cost me $300 for Omega to do the major overhaul in the 1990's.. Today, if I wanted the same to be done, it would surely cost me megabucks. I love this watch and wear it with pride. . I think it will survive me, my son, and possibly my grandchildren. BTW, as of Sept. 16, I bought the Bulova replica moonwatch worn by David Scott on Apollo 15. It was the only other watch worn on the Moon. For $375, I had to buy it. It's about 10% larger than the Speedmaster, but it keeps extremely accurate time, and can be worn in water down to 150 ft. Can't do that with the Speedy. The Bulova is a bargin even if it's a quartz movement.
Outstanding review. I have been a subscriber for a while but this I believe is my first comment. Great video, looking forward to further watch reviews.
Best regards,
TGV
The Urban Gentry Hey! You know I just found your channel myself. Thanks for your comment man!
The Urban Gentry so this crystal will eventually scratch...
+BeautyofScent if you use polywatch it will polish out.
Most people dislike this watch, because it's not flashy enough. People that actually bought this watch are people that are willing to own a piece of history. Not many watch designs remained untouched for 50 years. That says a lot. And those that got the sapphire sandwich simply missed the point and landed on a Omega's marketing scheme. Good Review !
terry bigmango, I know you posted this 2 years ago, the Speedmaster wasn't meant to be flashy.
Dan Carlton yup that’s what he is saying. The only speedmaster is the 42mm manual wind. Anything else is not bad just not a real speedy.
I’m going to get this one for my 30th bday. Rich history behind this model. And it looks great
Hands down, this is the best review I've seen for any watch. While others are more focused on talking shit about why other brands suck, yours actually focuses on the review of the watch you're talking about while providing a great deal of history about it. Thumbs up, my friend. I originally had my eye on the Omega Plant Ocean 45.5 but this watch has really won me over and I will be adding this bad boy to my collection.
I just can't help myself, I have two Seamasters and purchased the Dark Side of The Moon Speedmaster the beginning of this month but now... My eye keeps getting caught by this original moon watch. Gah!
Well presented video with great focus on the watch :)
FV4030 is it really worth the investment??
awesome quality of the video despite the comparatively small amount of subscribers. (hope to see this change in a good way very soon). high-quality picture plus some history go hand in hand, haven't seen that before. i like it though
Informative and quietly enthusiastic mini-lecture on the Omega. Tip: Keep watch stationary; having it bob and move around on your hand makes for seasick viewing. Hey, it's your first time ..!
Excellent job dude. The Speedy looks great on your wrists too. Looking forward to seeing more of the family collection. Cheers, Andrew
Means a lot coming from you, I appreciate that.
I love the Moon to Mars Version 🚀
A staple in any comprehensive watch collection .... Beautiful watch.
Hello, great review. I have this watch and the crystal does scratch quite easily, I had put quite a deep scratch in mine and was gutted but I bought poly watch paste and it polished it out completely. unbelievable stuff so if anyone is getting this watch don't worry about scratching it
Bought mine in 2001 - loved it then, love it now. Elegant, accurate.
Beautiful timepiece. I can only hope that one day I will be making enough money to be able to purchase one myself.
You've made a great review. I'm not a big fan of chronograph watches, but 3570.50 is truly a remarkable watch even without its rich history and importance in watch industry, love the robust manual wind cal.1861 movement and solid, chunky case and bracelet. warmth and curvature of the hesalite glass makes 3570 more unique.
(sorry for 3573 fans, but sapphire glasses on moonwatch look so weird)
The only problem I found on the watch is that it involves expensive maintenance costs. A new 3570 was sold for around 4500 dollars in my region (South Korea) but a complete service would cost more than 650 dollars and take a damn long time. (by comparison, the retail price of Rolex Daytona here is about 12K but they only charge 500 dollars for a complete service).
True, but to be fair, nearly any watch maker can maintain a 1861 movement these days. I wouldn't be afraid to NOT send it to Omega.
Hi from England, thanks for the review! I have the 1861 movement, extremely pleased with it, fits my wrist really well too.
The 861 also went to the moon on the late Apollo missions. On top of that the 861-1861 have been to space more and on more missions then the 321 example. 1. Skylab 2. Mir 3.Soyuz 3. Space Shuttle 4. ISS
www.christies.com/lotfinder/watches/omega-an-exceptional-highly-attractive-and-historically-5945140-details.aspx
the 861 only went to the moon once but never to the surface. Ron Evans brought his personal 145.022 with 861 movement on Apollo 17 but he never set foot on the moon.
Great review. One little thing. The newest version has not only a very large gift box. It also has a bracelet with screwed links in stead of pins. Fantastic watch and a real icon. Love it.
Great video, and some really good history, you've done your homework! I think the only bit where you slipped up was confusing "chronometer" with "chronograph". One thing I will add is - don't be afraid to adjust an Omega bracelet yourself, especially the old push pin ones. It is so easy to push the link pins out and back in (I've done it dozens of times on my collection just with a $10 Chinese watch tool kit). The old Omega pin and collar bracelets were very easy to adjust, and extremely robust, unlike the new bracelets with their tiny fiddly little screws that you can strip the heads on and lose so easily.
Actually the 311 (newer ref no.) beside from new packaging and whatnot, the bracelet also is a screw type(not sure if i explain correctly) just want to added here
also nice info you present here nice work
absolutely stunning watch hopefully own this some day.
Great watch! Congratulations on your purchase. Very cool history of that watch, it looks just the right size on your wrist. Enjoy!
Great review! Some dedicated watch channels don't give half the information about the watches they are reviewing. I tip my hat to you sir.
Awesome! It took some research but there's a lot of info out there about the Moonwatch in particular. Glad you enjoyed it.
Practically Everyday If you have more watches I would enjoy more reviews.
I've now been schooled... Omega is a classic brand!!!
Haha thanks dude. Whole evening's worth of research in this vidja. ;-)
Congratulations on a fine purchase. It's a classic, and nice they are able to continue it due to success of the model and the conglomerate that supports them I presume. It looks very mid-century (apropos) in design.
Thanks for sharing.
This is the best review of the Speedy.
I myself am on the fence, I am looking at the Speedy, SMP 300 and the Breitling Superocean 44. I know Speedy is not in same category as the other two (dive watches), but the Speedy grew on me as I was doing research on it and the Superocean. Each time I watch your review of the Speedy the more I like it.
Awesome. Congrats on all the views. I think the rebranding makes your channel even better...well versatile. 👍
That's a really really really smart watch I'd love one
Excellent review and gorgeous watch, love the look of it and history. Added to wishlist!
great review, looking to get a pre-owned myself! This watch on a black Nato strap might be the best looking sport watch ever
Just bought a high end replica version of this and I absolutely love it. Can only imagine how beautiful the genuine is.
Nice video
Gorgeous watch, great review, I really would like to get one of these, one day. Regarding the serial number, though, I think you may have shown it right at the end of the clip! Thanks again for a great review!!
awesome review - thank you. glad you got the real moonwatch - the one with the Hesalite crystal and non-see-thru back.
Awesome job for a first watch review and so informative. I have had my eye on this watch since I watched them land on the moon in 1969 as a kid. If I can ever find a good deal on a used one I going to snatch it up. I just missed one local because I did not know how good of a deal it was.. Hope I can find another,CHEERS
Great video, GREAT watch! I have one of these. Thanks for explaining the "Poor Man's Hack" to the masses. :)
Good review, supplied more than sufficient detail, the watch looks great under good natural lighting conditions, perhaps the clearest pictures of the watch Ive seen on YT. Other reviewers just flip the watch in their fingers too much and have poor control of their camera lens and focus. I am not sure if I want the 9300 cal or this cheaper but legendary 3570.50 now, all because of this review. So Co-axial or 1861 cal? Choices, choices ....
The cal. that was used during Apollo 13 was the 861.
Thanks for the great video. Just curious, at 8:56, you mention the difficulties adjusting the 44.25mm Speedmaster. Can't the wrist size be adjusted more precisely from the clasp on these watches?
markowitz1959 No. These do not have micro-adjustments for some dubious reason.
I just got the same one. I got the newer one with the huge packaging and accessories. you missed out mate
Correct me if Im wrong, but Breitling was not a contender for NASAs space/Moon qualification tests. There were Rolex, Longines and, of course, Omega.
You said that the Speedmaster was the only watch that passed all the qualification tests. Well, Speedmaster passed with the accuracy of 5 seconds per day rate which was the best result, therefore it was chosen. Neither Rolex nor Longines were shock resistant at that time.
Nothing agains Omega. I think that 1967 Speedy is one of the best watches of all time and Im currently looking for one
This sounded like a PowerPoint Presentation. I didnt even need to physically look at the screen. Just listened
Really surprised that this doesn't have true hacking ability - first review that's called that out, thanks. A bit surprising at this price point.
Super Dude Easy tiger, you sound personally offended by my innocuous comment. I'm sorry to have riled you up.
Super Dude So my personal surprise that a watch of this price doesn’t have true hacking is erroneous and misleading? Mate, I was expressing an opinion. I wasn’t trying to inform the masses. On the other hand, you are providing information so if you’re info was false then that would be erroneous and misleading. Anyways thanks for the education - good to know about more expensive models without hacking.
Everybody forgets, because this is such an amazing watch, that it also has the coolest name on the planet.
Speedmaster.
Beat that, Datejust!
Nice review, thanks! I can't wait to get my Sapphire Sandwich Omega, I should get it in a month if all goes well.
Got mine in 2007….cost £1600 new.
Used models for sale now at twice the price.
Excellent review, good info and history.
What is the point really in "hiding" the SN?
i wish this watch had a water resistance of 100 meters!
wish you enjoy it thanks
Nice vid. Love the Speedmaster. Watches have become insanely expensive. The auto Speedy is now up around $7k! Crazy.
that is cheap for a watcg
Its not 7k$ i have this watch its 3$k
atalla esen the automatic coaxial version is ~$7000
+Rakan Aldusari Get a Casio G-Shock then, you peasant.
Dang it! Now I want a Speedmaster!
WeaverJ576 l you have to have an account to get the number
Great job going out of your way covering your serial number then giving us an HD shot of it on the 7 o'clock lug at 14:05
Omega Spedmaster “Men on the Fucking Moon!”
maan on the moon fukcas :D great review and video! Iconic timepiece! kudos to you Sir !
Ugh that guy... Migraine inducing.
Practically Everyday
lol
Practically Everyday lol
"Get an Omega Speedmaster MANNN ON THE MOOOOOOOONNNNN!!"
NASA never tested a Breitling. But Scott carpenter wore one on Mercury 7
Bonus trivia: What company made the clock that failed in the LM, requiring Armstrong to leave his Speedmaster behind?
Great video man. Unlike 99% of the other watch reviews; you really know your stuff! And I had the same watch, the bracelet is a bitch to change. The new model uses screws instead of pins. However, the pins have a cool vintage vibe.
i did own it but i did not like it after two years because i needed the date on the watch so i believe it s over priced but still a good design watch
Thank you for your video. Informative, clear and professional. Nice style. Very helpful. Looking forward to following your channel. Best regards, Raj.
he keep showing this watch n telling story and I fell like buying......but broken as hell
Great review! Which camera did you use ? The focus is fast and accurate
Did they ever find out what had made the Lem's main chronometer to quit?
That big red box is such a wasted effort.
Great review mate!
Nice video. I have the 1972 model
If you look carefuly , the second ( stopwatch ) hand is not aligned to zero but out slightly . Take it back !
Nah it's square. That's just perspective.
Very precise and detailed review I enjoyed it very much
Thanks!
my brother has this watch. he was showing it to me the other day and my timex had the same time. go figure.
Heh, you put paper over serious number on card but forgot to cover it on the back of the watch at the end. Serial clear as day there.
Ah well. Don't use my serial number on your chinese fakes please.
Practically Everyday Too late, I already had my horde of Chinese slave labor children assign that number to my fake Speedmaster production.
Great review Aaron!
How can you sit down to do this review all nice and professionally.. and not have the name of the astronaut who was wearing the watch memorized lol?
speed master got 1 problem. the chrono cannot reset to zero. even quartz chrono have this problem but for quartz there is a procedure to reset to zero unlike automatic you have to send to shop to reset. good watch?
Got the same watch and love it but it stops after just 18hrs or so is cause mabe I don't give enough turns?? Awesome take!
Wind it till it stops.
You say that the Apollo/Soyuz mission was the first time 2 manned spacecraft docked ‘mid-orbit’. That’s wrong. The Apollo 9 crew separated and docked a manned command module with a manned lunar module in Earth orbit in 1969, as did Apollo’s 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16 &17 in lunar orbit. Also, the Apollo 13 astronaut Fred Haise’s name is pronounced like ‘haze’, not ‘hazee’.
Not to be overly pedantic, but unless I'm mistaken the Apollo/Soyuz missions were the first time two independent spacecraft docked in orbit, whereas the LEM and command modules were two parts of the same spacecraft. You're not wrong, but it's really splitting hairs at this point.
Great watch !
I've owned one since 1969, and I still wear it, although it was refurbished. One negative is that it is not submergible. I've heard you shouldn't even wear it in the shower. Can anybody confirm or correct this info? Thanks in advance.
You don't want to wear any watch in the shower including a dive watch. The gaskets don't like the temperature changes.
Good information. Thank you.
I recently purchased my first Speedmaster Professional and couldn't be
happier. I'm having a hard time trying to figure out the production date
though. Watch is a 145.0022/345.0022 with bracelet 1171/633 and serial
beginning with 3558. According to charts I've found online the watch was
produced either 1972 or 1977. Do you know how I can verity the actual
production date?
My 1969 Speedmaster has the date (year) inscribed onto the inner surface of the back plate. It looks like it was stamped on. There is also writing etched onto the back inner surface from a fine vibrating drill type instrument with the serial number and other information. I had my jeweler take of the back plate to identify the exact movement. It's one of the early .861 movements which was changed over about October or November 1968 from the .321 to the .861. BTW, did you know that the original "Lamonia" movement was used in the early Speedmasters which was designed by the Patek people? So if you own an Omega speedmaster, there is Patek "blood" in your watch.
thanks
have been thinking to get one of these. should i get a brand new or a pre owned and how much different are they?
nice pls make more watch videos
I'm gonna! Thanks.
Will they ever make a sapphire with solid back? I love the look of this, not a fan of the hesalite crystal.
speedmaster numbered edition has sapphire and solid back. i know it's not quite the same but still
Curtis, I own one (sapphire crystal with solid back), purchased it in Europe in the early 70s,.
I've never see the ones with the see-through backs. And I'm with you, I don't like the look of the hesalite...
I've recently gotten into watches too, but you going str8 for the omega huh jeez. Not breaking in with seikos or orients? I wish i could afford your taste.
No I started with those, this is just the first video i've done. I've also owned IWC, Panerai, TAG, and Breightling too.
Great review! I'm currently considering between this and the one this was replaced by (311.30.42.30.01.005).
Any suggestions as to which one I should choose? Also, what would be the price difference?
+Raj Khosla It's my understanding that the only difference between the two is packaging and accessories. I'd buy the 3570.50 used.
Can somebody please help me. What exact reference Speedmaster did Jack Swigert use to time the 14 sec burn? Can’t find it anywhere. Thanks.
How would the hesalite fare over time compared to the sapphire?
Nice. Keep it up!
If price was not an issue, would you have still gone for the Hesalite version over the Sapphire sandwich and why?
htennekoh Yes, just my preference.
Wats ur all can share value now under 4k or over 5k us dollar
Because this watch was chosen by NASA the producers of the James Bond franchise changed Bonds watch of choice from Rolex to the Omega.
No it was because Rolex didn't want to pay to have it in the movie.
Adnan Shariff Nope, James Bond, Sean Connery, wore a Rolex in the first Bond movie [Dr No].
The Omega Speedmaster was heat, cold, pressure, water, and vacuum tested by NASA in 1962, along with Rolex, Bulova, Breitling and several other watches. The only watch to pass every test was the Omega Speedmaster. And ever since the NASA tests James Bond has worn an Omega Speedmaster or Planet Ocean, which is basically a Speedmaster.
Ron P James bond wore a Rolex in Dr. No in 1963 and after the Gemini space program they went to Omega. But they went back to Rolex because Rolex paid more money. But the producers went back and forth with four different watchmakers (Tag-Heuer, Rolex, Hamilton, and Omega) during the franchise until Pierce Brosnan, when Omega signed an exclusive contract with the Broccolis.
Ron P By the way Gemini was before Apollo. Gemini was from 1961-1966. That's when they tested Omega watches and made Omega the only watch certified for the Space Program.
Are you from SC?
Anybody buy one from Jomashop? Sounds too good to be true for $3300.
mike barela buy it
What’s your wrist size
how tightly should the watch fit?
Anthony Gjolaj As tightly as you want it to?
Is it really worth the investment or doest it depreciate like everything else??
How much price of this hour please answer and how we can buy this hour I am from Iraq, my greetings to you
Am jealous....
Own one for 8 month now, what is your experience winding it cause I know the instructions call for it to be wound till you actually cannot go no more but I'm kind of scared to reach that point without causing damage to the piece.
I wind it till it stops daily, that's what it says to do.
I bet you payed 3 or 4 grand for it.
I bought this watch and returned it. It's too dull and boring looking. I'm not a fan of the matt dial and printed logo.
price?
That information can be easily found via a google search. I believe MSRP on the 3570.50 was $4500, the new ref. is gonna be more. You can find watches considerably under MSRP at authorized dealers.
I know how to google search Aaron. I recently got a great deal on a maratac pilot watch because of a channel I subscribe to. I recently lost an eBay auction were a speed master went used in mint condition for 1780. I was just curious how you got it. I should've been more clear. Have a good day. Thanks for the great vidz.
Manuel Sanchez I bought it brand new from an AD.
very 5
