Just went through this on my Porsche. If the pump was ever pulled you have to prime the shit out of it, even if it wasn’t pulled it may have dried out. I’m talking a quart down the filter hole. What I did was slowly pour oil down the hole while someone else cranked until oil came up. You’re not seeing oil at the filter, it’s not pumping.
Spot on. Got the tshirt on my own 997tt rebuild(s) full power DIY. I would also say that 1bar on an up to temp mezger is ok according to porsche manual, especially with thin oil. Prime it but dont overfill as thats all bad
I feel for you. When I had the motor on my 911 rebuilt, my builder said he would only do it if I was happy to split the bottom end. I did (at extra cost) and we found all sorts of crap which necessitated a new oil pump plus the removal of some metal fragments which we can only assume we’re in the engine when new, because we couldn’t find anywhere else they could have come from. Any way, got the car back, ran it in for 500 miles, keeping it below 4K and finally after another service was able to give it the full beans. Rev’ed to 7k and was epic. The following day it refused to start. Called my engineer who immediately diagnosed a faulty crank sensor. Hopefully your issue will be minor, or the engine builder steps up (because he should have tested the engine before giving it back).
Gutted for you …hope it’s a minor glitch and no damage done.😔You definitely didn’t deserve this outcome after so much effort! Great content keep it coming 👏
Don't worry you will figure it out. The car looks beautiful. I'm so excited to see it as well as you are. I've been waiting a long time to see progress on this car. I'm a big Porsche enthusiast myself. I owe a 2001 Porsche Cabriolet and absolutely love it. It is by far the most fun you will have driving in any car you could own in my opinion. Keep at it. You got this. Happy motoring!
Really feel for you guys. I am sure your figure it out soon and hopefully something simple. I will say the car looks sick. Cant wait for the next video and please don't kill Fernando.
You guys are the best !! Amazing content, you guys explain everything very well, and the bloopers at the end super funny!! Small things have big beginnings !!
Oil pump chain tensioner failure... chain is likely popped off the cog and bound up in the engine drive side... new tensioner new chain new cogs on the oil pump and crankshaft, replace all rod and crank bearings as the low friction nitride coating is likely no longer their. Just like the 1981 xj650 I fixed up... no one sells new bearings and then bozo sneaks over and sprays so much ether into cylinder 3 that the rod fly's out the block. "fixing luxury toys is a tax collection gag, the primary owners bag the f out of them senselessly... -60% msrp value if it has more then 300 miles on it"
With a 996, you have to start it briefly to build oil pressure. Not sure if the 997 is the same. The starter alone isn't enough to build pressure. You can crank til the cows come home and see nothing. Prefilling the filter actually makes it harder to prime.
I feel so bad for you!!!! This is not the outcome that we all expected after so much went into the rebuild. I had the same problem with my rebuild after having the engine rebuilt it failed within 1 month and had to send it back for another build and another $15K cost but this time we went to a 3.8L. I wish the best that you can get it figured out.
I had a low oil pressure issue in my 996 Turbo and I had one shop lie to me and say that there was an internal issue and needed a full rebuild. After speaking to 2 other Porsche shops, they called BS on the diagnosis as the internals were so strong and over engineered for racing. Apparently the dry sump oil pump is extremely robust and takes a lot of punishment. I'm hoping this is a very simple fix for you and its on the road shortly!
I'm curious what your issue ended up being? I have an 07 997 turbo and an indy shop that works mostly on Ferraris told me a mechanical sound I was hearing from the engine was an oil pump and it would cost $15K to rebuild. I said no thanks and poured some liquimily lifter additive and it got much better. I'm gonna do an engine flush with the liquimolly product as well before my next oil change but just curious what your issue was. These engines have like 9 oil pumps and like you I'm pretty sure they're well engineered.
@@mak23997 I just had a faulty Oil Pressure sensor and the shop was adamant that the engine had serious internal issues and needed a full rebuild at $30K +. I didn't have a lazy 30 grand lying around so I got a 2nd and 3rd opinion. The other shops said it was almost impossible for a Mezger engine to have low oil pressure without a major issue like a piston squirter falling out from a cracked case etc. The oil pumps in Mezger engines are over engineered. Both shops said to replace the oil pressure sensor and see if the problem remained. I replaced the sensor myself for $80 and the problem was instantly fixed. The shop was lying just to try and drum up some extra work.
@@peterrule8107 Wow. Unbelievable what some of these guys will do! Well glad you got it resolved for so cheap! I'll keep that in mind if I ever have the same issue on mine.
Dude. I had this exactly problem on a new build recently. The oil pump is not primed. You need to find a way to back feed oil into the oil pump (wrong way). I did it through the oil filer using a hand pump. Get a spare oil filter housing and drill and tap a hole, put a barb in on the outer side and puml heaps of oil back to the pump. Basically overfilling everything. Once you get the oil pump primed it will stay good. Drop oil because its too full then refill. You should be good to go.
I build Porsche engines by trade and hard to believe that a 997tt oil pump isn’t making any pressure especially since it did in the old engine, I can see low pressure but no pressure at all seems strange.
I have an 07 997 turbo and my engine was making a metallic sound (more than the typical mezger metallic marble sound) had an indy shop (one that mostly works on Ferraris) tell me it was a bad oil pump and would be $15K to repair. To his credit he didn't really want to do the work haha. I'm just curious as someone who builds Porsche engines what can you say about the oil pumps in the 997 turbos? Do they fail under "normal use"? If they do it sounds like a b--tch to fix. I don't have any engine or ECU mods just an 100 cell cat exhaust. Thanks!
@@mak23997 the oils pumps them selfs don’t fail, the noise you are probably hearing is the scavenge pumps on the heads can be pretty loud or a chain tensioner failure most likely on the bank 2 side
1bar to 1,5 bar is normal on hot engine. They build pressure over 5bar on cold engine. Takes aboute 5 seks of cranking before pressure i rising on rebuildt engine
Congratulations Fernando on your Porsche build! It's always impressive to see the dedication and hard work that goes into building a car like this. It's definitely shocking to hear about the oil pressure issue at the end, but don't lose hope. A standalone ECU from Syvecs could be a great solution and help you get the most out of your build. Best of luck!
I would go ahead and upgrade to a factory Porsche or upgraded Porsche racing pump. And make sure the oil pump gears are greased this time to aid in building that oil pressure.
Want to see the outtakes from your AG1 segment... or if you recorded it in one take, then give us the name of the "medication" you were taking. 🤣. And at least there was no mention of a Datsun Jok#.
This may be a noob comment but would the guys who worked on your engine know what might be the problem? I like some of the comments with potential solutions. I hope your try them and it works! This build and car makes me so jealous. My dream car for sure!
You buy complete cars to piece other cars together like I do! For years I thought I was the only one!Tattoo should be all the other cars in mist with a transition to the 997
Akrapovic. Makes them it’s in there slip on kits section. Most people only think they make motorcycle parts. But that’s wrong. There have everything you need titanium 😊.
Assumptions are the mothers of all fuckups! If you build an engine, race engine in your case you ALWAYS open the engine block. Good luck with the car, it will be awesome once finished
Looks like the oil pump was not primed, try taking the oil out, take out the oil pan and stuff engine builders grease in the oil pickup so when you put the oil pan again and add oil the oil pump can suck the grease and the oil and you should have oil pressure.

This should be pinned and he should give it a try so hopefully he doesn't have to pull the motor
I was typing this exact comment! Though, I was very surprised AND hesitant that it took an entire quart. Fixed my problem as well.
Everyone push this comment to the top.

Dang! So much awesomeness the first 23 minutes but a big bummer at the end. At least it looks incredible!
Honestly, I’m actually happy to see you getting a big name ad from AG1. It goes to show you guys are making a big hit in your genre of videos.
Pretty sure this is my favorite build on youtube right now. Love these porsche videos keep them coming

Awesome channel! Nice guy, no drama, minimal music, gets right down to business. Chooses cool cars.
I can’t get passed how great your videos are!!! Keep up the great work!!!
I support all these Porsche purchases! Car looks great. I'm sure you guys will get it figured out soon.

That sucks Lee; sorry to see this. I’m hoping it’s an easy fix or some simple oversight to get this beauty on the road. Wishing you luck bro!
I hope you figure it out without dropping the motor. My 997.2 NA 3.8L has oil pressure almost immediately and has 2 to 3 bar consistently on idle
Turbo's are different. 1.2-1.5 bar is standard after warm idle
Car look awesome man. I’m jealous.

That huge garage and all the lifts!!
Beautiful car! Hope you get it running
Hope you can get it figured out without too much headache. Very cool build. No doubt it will be worth it in the end. Mezger 911s are king!
Love it !!! Going to be around next week can I stop by and see the builds ?? Would be pretty cool ….

Purble tint the clear lacquer on the hood/frunk so its not so ‘in your face’ but still shows off the weave… same for the roof for a classy look.
I really like the way you get the parts you need.
epic channel! probably the best on youtube! definitely a set back, but applaud your positivity!
From @mike bartlett :
check the oil tank feed into engine to see if oil is there, some times the tank has rags blocking oil to engine
Also check the oil pressure relief valve could be missing or gum up .
the shop in New York wanted to fuck you over.

Bummer Bro! On the bright side, teardown video will make a break asmr vid! Thanks for sharing! Hope it all works out! Take care! Eddie
